versus Chelsea's Willian. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:00
See you. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:01
See you. | 0:00:01 | 0:00:02
Happy Monday morning,
I'm Ayshah with the first | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
Newsround of the week. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
First up, how clean
is the air we're breathing? | 0:00:17 | 0:00:21
Research by the World Health
Organisation last year said | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
the quality of the air in more
than 44 UK cities | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
wasn't good enough. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
And one girl is worried enough
to do something about it. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
Whitney's been to meet her. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
Air pollution isn't
always easy to see. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:37
It's caused by burning fossil fuels,
things like coal and oil | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
that we use to make heat,
electricity, and to | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
fuel cars and lorries. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
Hadil goes to a school in a part
of London with one of the highest | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
levels of air pollution
in the country. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
This road is really busy
with trucks, vans, cars, buses. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:57
You name it. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
Using this special camera,
we can see some of the harmful | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
gases in the air. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
Look as it drives off,
look at the cars next to it as well. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
And when you put it
in normal mode... | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
Nothing. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
You can't see anything. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
But what are we actually looking at? | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
This lab measures quality of air
from all over the UK. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
Hi, David. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
We've been taking a look
at the exhausts of cars. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
Can you tell us what this means,
and is it really harmful? | 0:01:22 | 0:01:27
Well, I can see here that you've got
pollution coming out | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
of the exhausts of vehicles. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
That's mainly going to be nitrogen
dioxide and very small particles, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
both of which can be damaging
for your health. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:40
It's not a worry for most
of us who are healthy, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
but if you have an existing problem
with your breathing, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
like many old people do,
or if you have asthma, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
then both of those things can be
affected by air pollution. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan,
says the problem is unacceptable, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
and has promised to help get
pollution levels down | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
to World Health Organization
standards by 2030. | 0:01:55 | 0:02:00
But Hadil wants more
done more quickly. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
I'm writing this letter
to the London mayor Sadiq Khan | 0:02:03 | 0:02:09
to tell him how unhappy I am
about air pollution in London. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
I wrote two proposals. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:13
The first one is to see more
electric cars on the road, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
and the second one is to get
factories to stop using | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
harmful chemicals. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
She's sending it to City Hall,
where the Mayor of London works. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
Newsround contacted Sadiq Khan
about her concerns. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
His office told us that the Mayor
was doing everything in his power | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
to tackle London's toxic air. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:36
Creating 12 low emission bus zones,
phasing out diesel taxis, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
checking the quality of air around
schools, and alerting people | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
when air quality falls
below a certain standard. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:48
They say the Mayor now wants
the Government to introduce | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
a special fund to help people
replace high emission vehicles. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
The Government has promised to give
£3.5 billion to help | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
improve air quality. | 0:02:55 | 0:03:00
It plans to end the sale of diesel
and petrol cars and vans by 2040, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:06
and is publishing a clean air
strategy, setting out further steps | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
to tackle air pollution. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:13
OK, time for some sports news,
and you've heard the goals | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
with Kickabout, but let's take
a look at this shocker! | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
with Kickabout, but let's take
a look at this shocker! | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
FA Cup holders Arsenal are out
of this season's competition. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25

helped Championship side | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
Nottingham Forest beat them 4-2. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29
It's the first time since 1996 that

Manchester City Women
continued their 100% record | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
in the Women's Super League
with a 5-2 victory at Reading. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
This whopping header
from Nadia Nadim got City off | 0:03:43 | 0:03:48
to an amazing start,
and means they've now won six | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
matches out of six. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:51
And England's cricketers
have been beaten again. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:58
They lost their final test match
against Australia in Sydney. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
England were bowled out for 180 runs
meaning the Aussies win the famous | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
Ashes competition 4-0. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
This weekend saw the East Coast
of North America shivering | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
in a record-breaking freeze. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:13
Thousands of snow ploughs are now
trying to clear the roads | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
after a massive snow storm. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
Temperatures fell below
minus 29 degrees Celsius. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:23
These girls in Boston sent us this. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
Hi Newsround, this is Boston,
USA, and it's so cold! | 0:04:25 | 0:04:30
We've had 12.5 inches of snow! | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
It was awesome! | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
We got the day off school! | 0:04:36 | 0:04:38
We read books, baked banana
bread, and watched TV. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:43
After the snowstorm,
the snowploughs cleared the roads, | 0:04:43 | 0:04:49
and my mum and dad cleared the snow
in front of our house. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:52
Bye from Boston! | 0:04:52 | 0:04:58
Enjoy your breakfast. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
I'm back in half-an-hour. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03 |
