Morning, guys - Martin here with your Monday Newsround. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Red pandas check out their first snow. | :00:00. | :00:11.
And... We are talking about homework. This is Newsround! | :00:12. | :00:24.
You're back at school, which means lessons, assembly, | :00:25. | :00:27.
hanging out with your friends at break-time, and, | :00:28. | :00:29.
But some people don't think students in primary school | :00:30. | :00:33.
Jenny has been looking into the homework debate. | :00:34. | :00:54.
Homework, it's given out in most of the primary schools in the UK, | :00:55. | :00:57.
but for more than 100 years experts have been trying to decide | :00:58. | :01:00.
whether or not it's a good thing for you to do. | :01:01. | :01:03.
Some people think homework puts too much pressure on kids. | :01:04. | :01:06.
They say research suggests homework in primary school isn't | :01:07. | :01:10.
helpful for students, and because of this some heads | :01:11. | :01:12.
and teachers want homework to be banned completely. | :01:13. | :01:16.
But others say homework is an important part of you learning | :01:17. | :01:19.
how to work on your own, and gives you the chance | :01:20. | :01:21.
to practice what you've learnt in the classroom, | :01:22. | :01:23.
like reading, writing, spelling and times tables. | :01:24. | :01:28.
At this school, the students are given written and number | :01:29. | :01:30.
Homework is a good thing because it might help children | :01:31. | :01:35.
who are struggling or just need a bit more information to help them, | :01:36. | :01:38.
and I think all children should be doing it. | :01:39. | :01:42.
I don't like homework because I feel after school I should relax. | :01:43. | :01:45.
I think it's beneficial because you're recapping | :01:46. | :01:47.
Sometimes I get really stressed when I don't have it all done. | :01:48. | :01:54.
It's really like, it puts you under pressure. | :01:55. | :01:58.
The Government says headteachers can make their own decision | :01:59. | :02:00.
about whether or not to set homework, so why does this | :02:01. | :02:03.
school, like many others, think it's important? | :02:04. | :02:06.
Basically we give them homework because we want them to reaffirm | :02:07. | :02:11.
what they've learned that week and enjoy what they're learning, | :02:12. | :02:14.
and we also want them to be ready for when they go to secondary | :02:15. | :02:18.
school, that they will be getting homework on a regular basis | :02:19. | :02:22.
I would like homework to be a bit more varied, | :02:23. | :02:26.
and I'd like there to be history projects and science things, | :02:27. | :02:30.
If homework was taken away, I'd feel glad but also sad | :02:31. | :02:36.
because the homework helps me know what I'm doing and makes me more | :02:37. | :02:39.
confident, but I'd be happy as well because I've got more time to spend | :02:40. | :02:43.
Should you get more, less or none at all? | :02:44. | :02:53.
This week we'll be speaking to children who do all sorts | :02:54. | :02:55.
of homework, and we'll put the arguments to a panel | :02:56. | :02:59.
But we want to know what you think - head online to have your say. | :03:00. | :03:11.
Now, it's pretty chilly outside, and icy too, and it's pretty easy | :03:12. | :03:14.
to slip about and fall on your bum quite a lot! | :03:15. | :03:16.
But, fear not, we might have found a solution to help you move around | :03:17. | :03:19.
without slipping over, and it comes from a familiar | :03:20. | :03:22.
It is freezing outside, but it's OK, I've got my gloves, | :03:23. | :03:25.
I've got my coat, I am ready to go, so... | :03:26. | :03:28.
Oh, there has got to be a better way. | :03:29. | :03:31.
Doctors in Germany are advising people to try walking like penguins | :03:32. | :03:38.
Some penguins live in cold places like Antarctica, | :03:39. | :03:45.
and are well known for their unusual walk, which helps them | :03:46. | :03:53.
By taking small steps or shuffling, and leaning forward to change | :03:54. | :03:56.
their centre of gravity, penguins reduce their | :03:57. | :03:58.
So, Jenny, try channelling your inner penguin. | :03:59. | :04:04.
Point your feet outwards, raise your arms for balance, | :04:05. | :04:08.
Well, she might not be slipping over, but she does | :04:09. | :04:18.
You never know, though, it might just catch on. | :04:19. | :04:32.
And sticking with the snow - check out these cute red panda cubs | :04:33. | :04:35.
seeing snow for the first time at their Cincinnati Zoo in America. | :04:36. | :04:38.
Harriet and Hazel can be seen here playing around, | :04:39. | :04:40.
They obviously don't get bothered by the cold! | :04:41. | :04:43.
That's all from me, Newsround's back right here in about half an hour. | :04:44. | :04:46.
Don't forget to head online for the rest of the day's stories | :04:47. | :04:49.
and to have your say on the great homework debate. | :04:50. | :04:55. |
