Good morning, Ayshah
here with your top Newsround | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
stories this Monday. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:20
Loads of you will be staying
at home today as hundreds | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
of schools are closed
because of the wintery weather. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
Watch this. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
There was plenty of fun to be had
yesterday as snowy weather | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
swept across the UK. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
Up to 30cm of snow coated
parts of the country. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
I like it because where we live
we never get any snow! | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
I like snow because you can
make snow angels and | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
snowmen! | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
I find it really fun to do. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:51
And the freezing conditions have
continued this morning, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
meaning hundreds of schools
across England and Wales | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
will be closed because
of the wintry weather. | 0:00:55 | 0:01:01
Temperatures have been between -1
and one degrees in built-up | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
areas, but as low as -10C
in some countryside areas. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
Yesterday the snow saw trains
and flights cancelled, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
and provided a snowy
backdrop for some big rugby | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
and footy matches. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:11
The Met Office has issued yellow
weather warnings of ice for Wales, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
the Midlands and the South East. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:23
It also warned of more wintry
showers and icy conditions | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
across Scotland and Northern
Ireland. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:30
There could be up to 5cm of more
snow in some parts of the South. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
So keep those gloves on, there may
be time to build another snowman! | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
And we want to hear from you today -
are you stuck at home | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
because of the snow
or are you in school but having fun? | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
Get in touch over at Newsround
online and send us a picture | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
of what you are up to! | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
Let's take a look at
the big footie stories - | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
and it was a record breaking day
in the Premier League... | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
Nicolas Otamendi hit the winner
for Manchester City as they became | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
the first English team to win 14
top-flight matches in one season - | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
as they beat Manchester United
2-1 at Old Trafford. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
It means the league
leaders go 11 points ahead | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
at the top of the table. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:12
And a Wayne Rooney penalty meant
that the Merseyside derby | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
between Liverpool and Everton ended
in a 1-1 draw. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
Mo Salah gave Liverpool the lead
but Everton captain Rooney | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
scored his first ever derby goal. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:29
There are thousands of kids
in the UK caring for relatives | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
who are ill or can't
look after themselves. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
And for many young carers,
Christmas can bring extra pressures. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
We went to meet Abi to find
out how her and her mum | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
will be spending the holidays. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
If I could have a wish,
like one wish, it would be | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
to make my mum's illness go. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
For Abi and her mum, Christmas
is their favourite time of year. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
But unlike most 11-year-olds,
Abi cannot just chill | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
out over the holidays. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
Her mum has a disease called MS. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
That sometimes stops her from doing
the stuff that she wants, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
like running, walking,
and doing simple activities | 0:03:06 | 0:03:07
like bending as well. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:17
That means that Abi has
to help her mum do certain things, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
even on Christmas Day. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:24
When I wake up, I help her put
some socks on and shoes. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
I come down but I
don't open presents. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
I make breakfast instead. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:30
It's not how you normally
spend Christmas. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
You feel like you want to do more,
especially when there | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
is more special times,
you want to help and | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
you want to be there. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:38
So being a carer for your mum,
does that mean that sometimes | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
you miss out on doing things that
people your age would | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
normally be doing? | 0:03:43 | 0:03:53
Well, most young kids
could go to the park | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
or play with their friends,
but if my mum is ill, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
or I need to stay in,
I kind of don't have | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
that opportunity often. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
Abi will go off and do
all of those brilliant things | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
but in her head she is always
thinking, where's Mum? | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
Who is with mum? | 0:04:08 | 0:04:18
It can be really tough caring
for a relative but luckily Abi gets | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
lots of support from her school
and at a special group | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
run by a charity. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:32
The help that I get says just
because you are a young carer | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
doesn't mean you are different
to everyone else. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
Every bit of being a young carer
is amazing, because you can | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
go out with Barnardos,
or Barnardos could help | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
you and it's a sign that
you are not alone with this. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
You have people that will help you. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:54
What does it mean to you to be
a carer for your mum? | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
It's like cheese and crackers
or strawberries and cream, | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
we stick together for everything. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:05
Britain has a new tallest mountain. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
Mount Hope, which is in the part
of the Antarctic claimed by the UK, | 0:05:08 | 0:05:14
was recently re-measured and found
to tower above the previous title | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
holder, Mount Jackson. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:18
It is over 3,239 metres high! | 0:05:18 | 0:05:24
OK - we've got the latest Strictly
news now, so if you don't | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
want to know, close your eyes
and hum the theme tune | 0:05:27 | 0:05:29
for about 30 seconds... | 0:05:29 | 0:05:30
It's going to be an epic final. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:38
Joe and Katya! | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
Joe McFadden from Holby TV was first
through along with Debbie McGhee | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
and Alexandra Burke. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
That meant Gemma and Molly
in the dance off, and unfortunately | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
Molly lost out and will not be
in next week's grand final. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:52
That's it from me. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
Newsround's back at 4.20 -
have a great day guys - | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
whetever you're doing. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:57 |
