Hi, team, Martin here
with your afternoon Newsround. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
First up, it's been another day
of seriously wintery | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
weather in the UK -
for some places the coldest day | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
of the year - and hundreds
of schools are still closed. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:25
That meant a day off
school for some of you- | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
and you've been telling us
what you've been up to. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
Brrr, it's cold out there. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
The wintry weather gripping the UK
is showing no signs of stopping. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
Snow and ice are still covering many
areas and overnight we had some | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
record low temperatures. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
A freezing -13 degrees
was recorded in | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
Shropshire which meant
it was the coldest night | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
of the year so far. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:55
Temperatures across the UK all saw
peaks well below zero degrees. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
The Met office has said its yellow
weather warning for frost and ice | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
will remain in place
until tomorrow at least. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:02
And the chilly weather meant
hundreds of schools remained | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
closed for a second day. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
So what have you guys been up to? | 0:01:06 | 0:01:13
Freya is seven and
lives in Shropshire | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
where that record low
temperature happened. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
Here she is showing her baby sister
snow for the very first | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
time. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:20 | |
Get a load of these guys. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:21
Evie, Jake and Molly
the dog loving the | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
snow at their home in South Wales. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
Do you want to build a snowman? | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
Gabriella and Anya did and they made
this amazing one in Herefordshire. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
And how about this for
an incredible igloo? | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
I'll let the boys explain this one. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
My name is Ernie. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:36
My name is Stanley. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:37
My name is Oscar. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:38
My name is Alfie. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:44
The best bit about it is it is
quite warm inside the | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
igloo. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
And it's really tall. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
And there's a chance of more snow
to come in areas of Scotland | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
and the north. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
So keep the pictures coming in. | 0:01:54 | 0:02:01
Next to America where
emergency services | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
are fighting six huge fires
across California and | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
helping people to safety. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
The flames are getting closer
to the big city of Santa Barbara. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
Wild fires in the area have been
burning for nearly a week scorching | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
an area bigger than the whole
of New York City! | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
The governor says he's worried this
could become normal and happen every | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
year and even NASA have been
tracking the fires | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
from high flying jets. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
Talking of NASA, US
President Donald Trump has | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
ordered the US space team to work
on sending American | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
astronauts back to the moon. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
And maybe even beyond! | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
NASA haven't been on the
moon since the 1970s | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
and the President wants them
to start work on a base there that | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
could serve as a pit-stop
for future missions to Mars. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:51
It marks an important step
in returning American astronauts | 0:02:51 | 0:03:01
to the Moon for the firt
time since 1972. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
We will establish a foundation
for an eventual mission to Mars | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
and perhaps too many worlds beyond. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
Next up, mobile phones in school -
should they be allowed? | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
In France a new law is aiming
to ban phones in primary | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
and secondary schools. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:16
Kids wouldn't be able
to look at or touch them | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
until after school has finished. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
Should that be the law here ? | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
We want to know what you think - | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
head to our vote at Newsround online
- do you think phones should | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
be banned completely? | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28
Should you be allowed
them at breaktime? | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
Or would you like to be able to use
them in class all the time! | 0:03:30 | 0:03:35
Now, I imagine loads
of you will have | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
decorated your houses for Christmas
with trees and lights | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
and all sorts of sparkly bits! | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
Like us! | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
But did you ever wonder
how tinsel is made? | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
We went to a tinsel
factory to find out. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:55
Let's see how tinsel is made. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:56
First off, let's choose the colours. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
Let's make some
Newsround-coloured tinsel. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
Next, we load the machines
with the reels, and switch it on. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:07
The machine cuts the foil up
to make it nice and frilly. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:18
Then, we add some wire
to make it stronger. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
That happens down in there. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
Finally it goes down to the tub
where it is all spun together | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
like a candy floss machine. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
The machine stops,
and your tinsel is ready. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:42
Here it is - Newsround tinsel. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:47
That's it from me, Newsround's
back tomorrow at 7.40. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
Don't forget to head online
for the rest of the day's stories | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
and while you're there,
