Hi, team, Martin here

with your afternoon Newsround.

0:00:120:00:14

First up, it's been another day

of seriously wintery

0:00:140:00:17

weather in the UK -

for some places the coldest day

0:00:170:00:20

of the year - and hundreds

of schools are still closed.

0:00:200:00:25

That meant a day off

school for some of you-

0:00:250:00:27

and you've been telling us

what you've been up to.

0:00:270:00:31

Brrr, it's cold out there.

0:00:310:00:33

The wintry weather gripping the UK

is showing no signs of stopping.

0:00:330:00:36

Snow and ice are still covering many

areas and overnight we had some

0:00:360:00:39

record low temperatures.

0:00:390:00:42

A freezing -13 degrees

was recorded in

0:00:420:00:46

Shropshire which meant

it was the coldest night

0:00:460:00:50

of the year so far.

0:00:500:00:55

Temperatures across the UK all saw

peaks well below zero degrees.

0:00:550:00:57

The Met office has said its yellow

weather warning for frost and ice

0:00:570:01:01

will remain in place

until tomorrow at least.

0:01:010:01:02

And the chilly weather meant

hundreds of schools remained

0:01:020:01:05

closed for a second day.

0:01:050:01:06

So what have you guys been up to?

0:01:060:01:13

Freya is seven and

lives in Shropshire

0:01:130:01:14

where that record low

temperature happened.

0:01:140:01:16

Here she is showing her baby sister

snow for the very first

0:01:160:01:19

time.

0:01:190:01:20

Get a load of these guys.

0:01:200:01:21

Evie, Jake and Molly

the dog loving the

0:01:210:01:23

snow at their home in South Wales.

0:01:230:01:25

Do you want to build a snowman?

0:01:250:01:27

Gabriella and Anya did and they made

this amazing one in Herefordshire.

0:01:270:01:30

And how about this for

an incredible igloo?

0:01:300:01:33

I'll let the boys explain this one.

0:01:330:01:35

My name is Ernie.

0:01:350:01:36

My name is Stanley.

0:01:360:01:37

My name is Oscar.

0:01:370:01:38

My name is Alfie.

0:01:380:01:44

The best bit about it is it is

quite warm inside the

0:01:440:01:47

igloo.

0:01:470:01:48

And it's really tall.

0:01:480:01:49

And there's a chance of more snow

to come in areas of Scotland

0:01:490:01:52

and the north.

0:01:520:01:54

So keep the pictures coming in.

0:01:540:02:01

Next to America where

emergency services

0:02:010:02:03

are fighting six huge fires

across California and

0:02:030:02:06

helping people to safety.

0:02:060:02:09

The flames are getting closer

to the big city of Santa Barbara.

0:02:090:02:12

Wild fires in the area have been

burning for nearly a week scorching

0:02:120:02:15

an area bigger than the whole

of New York City!

0:02:150:02:18

The governor says he's worried this

could become normal and happen every

0:02:180:02:21

year and even NASA have been

tracking the fires

0:02:210:02:24

from high flying jets.

0:02:240:02:28

Talking of NASA, US

President Donald Trump has

0:02:280:02:30

ordered the US space team to work

on sending American

0:02:300:02:33

astronauts back to the moon.

0:02:330:02:36

And maybe even beyond!

0:02:360:02:39

NASA haven't been on the

moon since the 1970s

0:02:390:02:42

and the President wants them

to start work on a base there that

0:02:420:02:45

could serve as a pit-stop

for future missions to Mars.

0:02:450:02:51

It marks an important step

in returning American astronauts

0:02:510:03:01

to the Moon for the firt

time since 1972.

0:03:020:03:04

We will establish a foundation

for an eventual mission to Mars

0:03:040:03:07

and perhaps too many worlds beyond.

0:03:070:03:10

Next up, mobile phones in school -

should they be allowed?

0:03:100:03:12

In France a new law is aiming

to ban phones in primary

0:03:120:03:15

and secondary schools.

0:03:150:03:16

Kids wouldn't be able

to look at or touch them

0:03:160:03:19

until after school has finished.

0:03:190:03:20

Should that be the law here ?

0:03:200:03:22

We want to know what you think -

0:03:220:03:24

head to our vote at Newsround online

- do you think phones should

0:03:240:03:27

be banned completely?

0:03:270:03:28

Should you be allowed

them at breaktime?

0:03:280:03:30

Or would you like to be able to use

them in class all the time!

0:03:300:03:35

Now, I imagine loads

of you will have

0:03:350:03:37

decorated your houses for Christmas

with trees and lights

0:03:370:03:40

and all sorts of sparkly bits!

0:03:400:03:42

Like us!

0:03:420:03:45

But did you ever wonder

how tinsel is made?

0:03:450:03:47

We went to a tinsel

factory to find out.

0:03:470:03:55

Let's see how tinsel is made.

0:03:550:03:56

First off, let's choose the colours.

0:03:560:03:58

Let's make some

Newsround-coloured tinsel.

0:03:580:04:01

Next, we load the machines

with the reels, and switch it on.

0:04:010:04:07

The machine cuts the foil up

to make it nice and frilly.

0:04:120:04:18

Then, we add some wire

to make it stronger.

0:04:230:04:26

That happens down in there.

0:04:260:04:29

Finally it goes down to the tub

where it is all spun together

0:04:300:04:33

like a candy floss machine.

0:04:330:04:36

The machine stops,

and your tinsel is ready.

0:04:360:04:42

Here it is - Newsround tinsel.

0:04:420:04:47

That's it from me, Newsround's

back tomorrow at 7.40.

0:04:470:04:51
