Good morning, Ayshah here bringing you Thursday's

0:00:040:00:06

stories with Newsround.

0:00:060:00:08

Coming up...

0:00:080:00:09

Meet the new arrival at Dallas Zoo and we take a look at these

0:00:090:00:13

stunning florescent fish.

0:00:130:00:18

First this morning, Prime Minister David Cameron wants

0:00:260:00:30

people to decide whether the UK should stay in, or leave

0:00:300:00:31

an important club of countries in Europe called the European Union.

0:00:320:00:36

Let's take a really quick look at what it's all about.

0:00:360:00:40

The European Union in 60 seconds.

0:00:400:00:42

In 1973, people dressed like this.

0:00:420:00:45

They ruled the charts and Newsround was only one year old.

0:00:450:00:48

And that's when the UK joined what is now known

0:00:480:00:51

as the European Union or EU.

0:00:510:00:53

It's a club of 28 countries from around Europe will work together.

0:00:530:00:57

This is its symbol.

0:00:570:00:59

It's got its own parliament, its own anthem and its own money

0:00:590:01:05

the euro, used by most of its members but not the UK.

0:01:050:01:08

Countries join the EU because they think it will help

0:01:080:01:10

bring Europe closer together but now British Prime Minister David Cameron

0:01:100:01:13

has promised to hold a vote on whether or not UK should stay

0:01:130:01:17

in or leave the EU.

0:01:170:01:19

Supporters of the EU think the UK is stronger as part of it.

0:01:190:01:23

That's because we buy and sell a lot of things with European countries.

0:01:230:01:27

People who want to leave the EU say it forces too many rules on Britain.

0:01:270:01:31

They say leaving will give British people more control over

0:01:310:01:33

issues like immigration.

0:01:330:01:36

It will be up to adults around the UK to decide what's best

0:01:360:01:39

when they vote this summer.

0:01:390:01:42

So, that's what the EU or European Union is.

0:01:420:01:45

But do you have any questions about the vote or the union itself?

0:01:450:01:48

If so, then we want you to get in touch.

0:01:480:01:51

BBC Europe expert Katya Adler will be here this afternoon

0:01:510:01:54

to answer as many of your questions as she can, so go online now.

0:01:540:02:00

Next, thousands of children have been affected by the ongoing war

0:02:000:02:04

in Syria in the Middle East.

0:02:040:02:06

Many have been forced to leave the country -

0:02:060:02:08

and some have even become separated from their families

0:02:080:02:12

Omar is one of them.

0:02:120:02:14

He made the dangerous journey on boat, train, bus and foot -

0:02:140:02:17

all the way from Syria to Calais in France.

0:02:170:02:22

This is Omar's story through pictures.

0:02:220:02:24

You could see the sunshine rising up the hills.

0:02:290:02:33

I was coming home from my uncle's house.

0:02:330:02:36

All of a sudden, there was a jet.

0:02:360:02:39

We'd seen many of them.

0:02:390:02:45

Even kids as young as two could tell if there was a particular kind

0:02:450:02:48

of plane or helicopter.

0:02:480:02:51

I could hear explosions all around me and jets

0:02:510:02:56

whistling as they flew by.

0:02:560:03:03

When they dropped a barrel bomb, nobody would dare

0:03:030:03:05

to watch where they fell.

0:03:050:03:08

If it were not for the war, I would not have left Syria.

0:03:080:03:11

I got on a boat for the first time.

0:03:110:03:18

We reached the middle of the sea and the engine

0:03:180:03:20

made this strange noise.

0:03:200:03:23

And it broke down.

0:03:230:03:27

Everybody was scared.

0:03:270:03:31

But then we saw two dolphins, and for a moment, we forgot

0:03:310:03:33

about the dinghy.

0:03:330:03:39

It took an hour to fix the engine before we could

0:03:390:03:42

continue with our journey.

0:03:420:03:48

I left Syria and took a boat from Turkey to Greece.

0:03:480:03:54

From there, I travelled by boat and train and I walked

0:03:540:03:57

until I reached Calais.

0:03:570:04:01

I've been stuck here in the Calais jungle for three and a half months.

0:04:010:04:09

There's no way out unless somebody helps you.

0:04:090:04:17

I left Syria to go and live with my family over in Britain.

0:04:170:04:21

It's been so long since I saw them.

0:04:210:04:25

I want to live just like everyone else.

0:04:250:04:28

And to bring you up to date, Omar is still in France,

0:04:310:04:34

living in the Calais jungle.

0:04:340:04:35

He's receiving support to try and legally reunite him

0:04:350:04:37

with his family here in the UK.

0:04:370:04:39

Omar hopes he'll be here in time to start school in September.

0:04:390:04:42

You can find out more about the jungle camp

0:04:420:04:44

in Calais online.

0:04:440:04:45

It wouldn't be Newsround without a quick round-up of some top

0:04:450:04:47

animal stories today.

0:04:470:04:49

To Dallas zoo in Texas in America, where they're celebrating the birth

0:04:490:04:53

of a new African elephant weighing a whopping 79 kilograms.

0:04:530:04:56

Keepers say the calf, who's still not been named,

0:04:560:04:58

will now spend time bonding with his mother and the rest

0:04:580:05:01

of the other elephants before he goes on show to the public.

0:05:010:05:04

And staying in the U.S, three one-month-old wolf puppies

0:05:040:05:06

have also made their debut at a Zoo near Chicago.

0:05:060:05:09

The Mexican grey wolf puppies were born last month but have just

0:05:090:05:12

emerged from their den.

0:05:120:05:13

Two other pups born in the same litter have been placed with a wild

0:05:130:05:16

wolf pack in the state of Arizona as part of a conservation effort

0:05:160:05:19

to save the species in the wild.

0:05:190:05:25

And get a load of these stunning GloFish.

0:05:250:05:26

These bio-flourescent fish have been specially bred to glow

0:05:260:05:29

different colours.

0:05:290:05:30

They were originally created about 10 years ago by scientists

0:05:300:05:32

who wanted to detect pollutants in the water where the fish's

0:05:320:05:35

scales would glimmer if the water contained toxins.

0:05:350:05:37

Now having bred and inherited the bright colours, they're proving

0:05:370:05:39

hugely popular at pet stores in California in America.

0:05:390:05:48

That's all from me this morning, Newsround's back with Jenny this

0:05:480:05:50

afternoon at 4.20pm.
