Hi, Ricky here with your top stories this Wednesday afternoon. | :00:13. | :00:14.
First up - there's going to be a big change to the type of car | :00:15. | :00:18.
Air pollution has become a big problem in the UK. It is what | :00:19. | :00:32.
happens when we burn certain types of fuel, which give off harmful | :00:33. | :00:36.
gases, and it is something we have spoken about Newsround before. | :00:37. | :00:43.
It feels a bit like smoke. Always coughing, my I start | :00:44. | :00:48.
watering. It is not safe for people with as | :00:49. | :00:53.
much. Driving is one of the biggest causes | :00:54. | :00:57.
of air pollution. The government have said enough is enough. We do | :00:58. | :01:01.
not need to stop driving in order to stop the problem. Instead, the | :01:02. | :01:04.
government say we need to replace ordinary cars with these. OK, so | :01:05. | :01:10.
they look like any other ordinary car from the outside, but take a | :01:11. | :01:13.
closer look because he was the difference. These cars run on | :01:14. | :01:20.
electricity instead of fuel, so rather than filling up to petrol | :01:21. | :01:25.
station, you plug it in to recharge, meaning that they don't give off the | :01:26. | :01:30.
same harmful gases. Some people already choose to buy electric cars, | :01:31. | :01:34.
now the government says that from 2040 they will not have a choice. | :01:35. | :01:37.
All new cars will have to be electric. It will be another 23 | :01:38. | :01:42.
years before the rules coming, and some people say that is not soon | :01:43. | :01:46.
enough. More needs to be done to improve the air we breathe. | :01:47. | :01:48.
Lots of people all over the UK live in tower blocks like these. | :01:49. | :01:51.
But since the massive fire at Grenfell Tower in London | :01:52. | :01:53.
five weeks ago there have been concerns about how safe | :01:54. | :01:56.
I went to meet Shania, who lives in a tower block in London. | :01:57. | :02:15.
Hello, Ricky. Her reading? How long have you lived | :02:16. | :02:22.
here for? Just a year. | :02:23. | :02:28.
What a view! This is incredible. What is it like living here and | :02:29. | :02:33.
having this view? I love it. | :02:34. | :02:40.
After a long day at school, Shania is home and showing me around her | :02:41. | :02:45.
flat in South London. Who lives here? My mum. I have lived | :02:46. | :02:53.
here for a year, and I enjoy it. I like the view, I like my bedroom, | :02:54. | :03:03.
and it has got a roof garden. Since last month's fire at Grenfell | :03:04. | :03:07.
Tower, people who look after other tower blocks around the country have | :03:08. | :03:10.
been working to make sure buildings are safe in the future. And to make | :03:11. | :03:14.
sure a tragedy like that never happens again. What was it like when | :03:15. | :03:19.
the fire happened at Grenfell Tower? Did you see anything? | :03:20. | :03:25.
I could see the smoke. It was shocking. | :03:26. | :03:37.
One of the big things that we talked about the Grenfell Tower fire, is | :03:38. | :03:42.
this stuff, cladding. It is wrapped around buildings to protect them | :03:43. | :03:46.
from the weather and also to change at our's appearance. Some experts | :03:47. | :03:50.
have said the type of cladding used could have had a part of making the | :03:51. | :03:59.
fire at Grenfell Tower much worse. The building that Shania lives in | :04:00. | :04:04.
has the same type of cladding, the company that owns it has told | :04:05. | :04:09.
Newsround it is going to be taken off and replaced. They say the fire | :04:10. | :04:12.
brigade have checked the building and say it is safe to live in right | :04:13. | :04:16.
now because of all the other safety features including sprinklers and | :04:17. | :04:21.
smoke alarms in every room. They test the fire alarms often. We | :04:22. | :04:28.
have been given a lot of advice. We have got sprinklers everywhere. We | :04:29. | :04:34.
have been told that we are safer. There is nothing for us to worry | :04:35. | :04:38.
about. Shania And her mum have seen and | :04:39. | :04:43.
heard a lot about tyre blocks -- tower blocks since the fire at | :04:44. | :04:46.
Grenfell Tower. Many people who live in tower blocks with cladding won't | :04:47. | :04:50.
cancel to do a lot to keep them safe. But Shania and her mum say | :04:51. | :04:56.
they are perfectly happy living here. | :04:57. | :04:56.
Newsround's back tomorrow morning at 7.40am. | :04:57. | :05:01.
