# Oh, yeah! #

0:00:530:00:55

Oh, ah! Oh, hello there!

0:00:560:00:59

I've just been weaving this basket

0:00:590:01:01

because it looks a bit like a bird's nest.

0:01:010:01:03

OK, Mrs Bird, now your eggs will be nice and cosy and safe.

0:01:030:01:10

-BEEPING

-Oh!

0:01:100:01:12

I hear a beep, I see a flash, I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:120:01:17

-BOTH: Hi, Nina!

-Hi!

0:01:200:01:23

We've got a question for you.

0:01:230:01:26

How do birds build nests?

0:01:260:01:28

Oh, that's a great question!

0:01:280:01:31

How do birds build nests?

0:01:310:01:33

Birds' nests are amazing structures but how do they build them?

0:01:330:01:37

Why don't you come down to my workshop and we'll investigate?

0:01:370:01:41

BOTH: See you soon, Nina! Bye!

0:01:410:01:43

Bye!

0:01:430:01:45

Well, I'm going to need some help to answer this one

0:01:450:01:48

and I know just who to ask.

0:01:480:01:50

OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:01:500:01:52

ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina!

0:02:080:02:10

OK, today's question is, how do birds build nests?

0:02:100:02:14

Which Neuron do you think will be most useful

0:02:140:02:16

in helping us find the answer?

0:02:160:02:18

It's Luke!

0:02:200:02:21

CHEERING

0:02:210:02:22

ALL: Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke!

0:02:220:02:26

Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke! Go, Luke!

0:02:260:02:30

Cool, Nina! I'll be looking out to help you!

0:02:300:02:33

Today's question is, how do birds build nests?

0:02:330:02:37

Because birds have to look for different materials

0:02:370:02:40

to build their nests, Luke will be helping us today.

0:02:400:02:43

Stand by, Neurons. I've a feeling I may need help from all of you.

0:02:430:02:47

I need to get the workshop ready before the experimenters arrive.

0:02:470:02:53

Ebrima likes break dancing.

0:02:530:02:55

Maheen loves chapattis.

0:02:550:02:58

But they both want to know, how do birds build nests?

0:02:580:03:02

So today, for one day only, Ebrima and Maheen become the experimenters!

0:03:030:03:09

-Hi, guys!

-BOTH: Hi, Nina!

0:03:150:03:17

Welcome to my workshop and thank you for your great question,

0:03:170:03:21

how do birds build nests?

0:03:210:03:23

I just happen to have some birds' nests here. Let's have a look.

0:03:230:03:27

We're safe to touch these nests because the birds

0:03:270:03:30

have finished with them and they're clean

0:03:300:03:32

but normally you must never touch nests.

0:03:320:03:35

So what do you notice about them?

0:03:350:03:37

-They are all different.

-That's right!

0:03:370:03:40

Different birds build their nests in different ways.

0:03:400:03:43

And, do you know, birds don't live in their nests, they only

0:03:430:03:47

build them so that they've got somewhere safe to lay their eggs?

0:03:470:03:51

Most birds build a new nest each year. So let's have a look here.

0:03:510:03:55

Now, this is a blackbird's nest. Can you see what it's made of?

0:03:550:03:59

Twigs.

0:03:590:04:00

Yes! And the twigs are all pushed in-between each other

0:04:000:04:04

so they cross over and under like weaving a basket

0:04:040:04:07

and that helps them to stick together.

0:04:070:04:09

This is a reed warbler's nest.

0:04:090:04:12

Now, it's built by weaving together

0:04:120:04:15

bits of fresh bendy grass.

0:04:150:04:17

And over here we have a long-tailed tit's nest

0:04:170:04:20

and it's made from soft moss

0:04:200:04:22

and fluffy spiders' webs and it's even got feathers inside it.

0:04:220:04:27

So it's like a cosy sleeping bag for the eggs.

0:04:270:04:30

-How do birds build their nest?

-That's a great question!

0:04:300:04:34

Let's do an experiment to find out!

0:04:340:04:36

ALL: Whoop, whoop! An experiment!

0:04:360:04:39

We're ready, Nina!

0:04:390:04:41

So these sticks are going to be our twigs

0:04:410:04:44

and these balls are going to be our pretend eggs.

0:04:440:04:47

Now, we are going to try

0:04:470:04:48

and build the base of a nest that will hold the eggs using this

0:04:480:04:52

wire frame and we need to make sure there are no holes

0:04:520:04:55

that the eggs can fall through. So, let's go!

0:04:550:04:59

Go for it!

0:05:000:05:02

Good!

0:05:020:05:04

That looks great!

0:05:140:05:15

So you weaved all the twigs together and that helps them

0:05:150:05:19

to stay in place and makes sure that the base stays together.

0:05:190:05:23

I think we need to test it out.

0:05:230:05:25

OK, so do you want to take two of our eggs, OK?

0:05:250:05:28

On you go. Oh! It held it!

0:05:280:05:31

-So did it work?

-Yes.

0:05:350:05:37

It did work, yes.

0:05:370:05:39

Lots of birds build their nests just like this.

0:05:390:05:42

So birds build nests to keep their eggs safe.

0:05:420:05:46

Some birds build nests by pushing twigs together to make sure

0:05:460:05:50

-they stay in place.

-Well-remembered, Neurons.

0:05:500:05:53

Where do birds build their nests?

0:05:530:05:55

That's a great question

0:05:550:05:57

and to find out I think we need to visit a special type of building.

0:05:570:06:01

Hmmm, where do you think we're going today?

0:06:070:06:11

-Nina said it's a special type of building.

-Maybe it's a big palace.

0:06:110:06:16

Maybe it's a big wheel!

0:06:160:06:18

We're here, Neurons, but it doesn't look much like a big wheel.

0:06:180:06:23

So I have brought you to this special building to find out

0:06:230:06:27

where birds build their nests. So what type of building is this?

0:06:270:06:32

-A treehouse.

-That's right, a house that's built up a tree.

0:06:320:06:36

-Now, do you know what's holding the treehouse up?

-Branches.

0:06:360:06:40

Yeah, the treehouse is resting in the branches of the tree

0:06:400:06:44

and lots of birds build their nests in trees or in other places

0:06:440:06:48

like bushes, so that predators like foxes and cats can't find them.

0:06:480:06:52

The nest might fall out of the tree!

0:06:520:06:54

Don't worry, Felix, birds try to make sure their nests

0:06:540:06:57

are secure by building them in a particular part of the tree.

0:06:570:07:01

Let's do an experiment to find out how it works.

0:07:010:07:05

We are going to pretend that you guys are birds.

0:07:050:07:09

-So let me hear you say hello.

-BOTH: Hello!

0:07:090:07:12

Hee-hee-hee-hee! We're also going to pretend that this is our tree.

0:07:120:07:16

Let's have a look at it.

0:07:160:07:17

-Where do you think would be the best bit to build your nest?

-Here.

0:07:170:07:21

Ah, so not here?

0:07:210:07:24

-No.

-And why not?

-Because it will fall out.

0:07:240:07:28

That's right, birds build their nests where the branches meet

0:07:280:07:32

because the branches help to hold up the nest.

0:07:320:07:35

But, Nina, birds don't have hands to build with.

0:07:350:07:38

That's right, Luke, birds build their nests using

0:07:380:07:41

their beaks and feet.

0:07:410:07:43

So, experimenters, do you think you can build a secure nest

0:07:430:07:47

in this tree here with all the things that are lying around

0:07:470:07:50

-using just your beaks?

-BOTH: Yeah.

0:07:500:07:53

Let's get building!

0:07:530:07:55

OK, maybe some big twigs to start with the base, that's it.

0:07:550:08:00

Now, get some smaller sticks and let's push them

0:08:000:08:03

in-between each other, that helps to hold them together.

0:08:030:08:08

-That's it.

-Waaa!

0:08:080:08:10

-Well done! How was that?

-BOTH: Fun!

-Ha-ha, good!

0:08:120:08:16

Isn't it amazing that birds just use their beaks and their feet

0:08:160:08:20

to make such complicated nests?

0:08:200:08:22

You guys were working together to build the nest,

0:08:220:08:25

that's just like birds, they often work together in pairs.

0:08:250:08:28

OK, we've a nice safe and secure nest but there's something else that

0:08:280:08:33

birds do to make their nests extra safe from predators like Mr Fox.

0:08:330:08:37

-What do you think that might be?

-Hide them.

-Yes!

0:08:370:08:40

So let's make our nest look green by using this moss.

0:08:400:08:45

Here you go, take some moss.

0:08:450:08:47

Well done, experimenters.

0:08:510:08:53

You've built a great nest. It's nice and secure

0:08:530:08:56

and it's hidden with moss, so Mr Fox can't see it.

0:08:560:09:00

So our eggs will be safe!

0:09:000:09:04

Ho-ho!

0:09:040:09:05

There you go.

0:09:050:09:08

Lots of birds build their nests in trees,

0:09:080:09:10

they wedge them between the branches.

0:09:100:09:13

They sometimes cover them with moss, so they can't be seen.

0:09:130:09:17

-Thanks, Neurons.

-Why do some birds put feathers in their nest?

0:09:170:09:21

That's a great question.

0:09:210:09:23

Some birds put feathers in their nest to keep warm

0:09:230:09:26

but there's another important reason too.

0:09:260:09:29

To find out, let's do another experiment.

0:09:290:09:32

We have some orange balloons in here.

0:09:320:09:35

We're going to pretend they are our eggs.

0:09:350:09:37

We also have the basket, which is our pretend nest.

0:09:370:09:41

-Now, what do birds do to keep their eggs warm?

-Sit on them.

0:09:410:09:44

You're absolutely right.

0:09:440:09:46

Let's see what happens if we press down gently onto the eggs,

0:09:460:09:50

just like we are birds sitting on top.

0:09:500:09:52

Let's see what happens.

0:09:520:09:54

-POPPING

-Oh! Ho-ho!

0:09:540:09:56

POPPING

0:09:560:09:57

-Ha-ha!

-Keep pressing.

0:09:570:10:00

-Ah-ha! What happened?

-They popped!

-Yeah!

0:10:000:10:03

So the weight of the bird is pushing the eggs against the spiky twigs

0:10:030:10:07

and it's damaging them.

0:10:070:10:09

What could we do to make the inside of the nest softer

0:10:090:10:12

to protect our eggs?

0:10:120:10:13

-Feathers.

-Great idea! Let's put some feathers in! Ho-ho!

0:10:130:10:17

-Hee-hee-hee!

-Hee-hee!

0:10:220:10:24

Excellent work. The inside of our nest looks much softer now.

0:10:240:10:28

I think we need to get some more eggs.

0:10:280:10:30

OK, let's see what happens when we push down this time.

0:10:330:10:37

Yay! It worked! Our eggs are safe.

0:10:460:10:49

Even though we were pushing down,

0:10:490:10:52

the soft feathers has stopped the twigs from damaging them.

0:10:520:10:56

Birds also use other soft materials like moss and mud and leaves.

0:10:560:11:01

Because baby chicks don't have any feathers when they're born,

0:11:010:11:05

these soft materials protect them from being scratched by twigs.

0:11:050:11:09

So some birds line their nests with soft materials like feathers

0:11:090:11:14

to protect their eggs from damage.

0:11:140:11:17

And to help keep their baby chicks warm and safe.

0:11:170:11:20

That's right, Neurons.

0:11:200:11:23

# Nina and the Neurons. #

0:11:230:11:25

So your question was, how do birds build nests?

0:11:270:11:31

I think we've answered it.

0:11:310:11:33

Birds build nests to keep their eggs safe.

0:11:330:11:36

They often build them high up in the trees

0:11:360:11:39

to keep them away from predators.

0:11:390:11:41

They push the twigs together to make sure they stay in place.

0:11:410:11:46

Sometimes they cover their nest in moss to hide it.

0:11:460:11:49

And they often line their nests with feathers

0:11:490:11:52

to protect the eggs and chicks.

0:11:520:11:55

So I hope that's answered your question.

0:11:550:11:57

BOTH: Thanks, Nina. Bye!
