ALARM SOUNDS

0:01:060:01:09

I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask?

0:01:090:01:11

-Hi, Nina.

-Hi, guys.

0:01:150:01:17

We've got a question for you.

0:01:170:01:19

-How do cable cars work?

-That's a great questions.

0:01:190:01:22

How do cable cars work? A cable car is a very unusual sort of car.

0:01:220:01:27

It doesn't have any wheels and it moves high above our heads.

0:01:270:01:30

But how does it work?

0:01:300:01:32

Why don't you come to my workshop and we'll investigate.

0:01:320:01:34

-ALL: See you soon, Nina. Bye!

-Bye!

0:01:340:01:38

Well, I'm going to need some help to answer this one

0:01:380:01:40

and I know just who to ask.

0:01:400:01:42

OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:01:420:01:44

ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:02:000:02:02

OK, today's question is how do cable cars work?

0:02:020:02:06

Now, which Neuron do you think will be most useful in helping us

0:02:060:02:09

find the answer?

0:02:090:02:10

-Me!

-Me!

-Me!

-Me!

-Me!

0:02:100:02:13

Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:130:02:16

I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:160:02:20

Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:200:02:22

I send messages to brain from ear.

0:02:220:02:24

If there's a sound I'll help you hear.

0:02:240:02:26

Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:260:02:28

For looking and seeing day or night,

0:02:280:02:30

I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:300:02:33

Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:330:02:35

If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:02:350:02:37

my messages help your sense of smell.

0:02:370:02:40

Or will it be baby Bud.

0:02:400:02:42

Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.

0:02:420:02:46

It's Luke!

0:02:500:02:53

-Go Luke!

-Go Luke!

-Go Luke!

-Go Luke!

0:02:530:02:56

-Go Luke!

-Go Luke!

-Go Luke!

0:02:560:03:00

Cool, Nina. I'll be looking out to help you.

0:03:000:03:04

Today's question is how do cable cars work,

0:03:040:03:06

and because cable cars are something that we can see

0:03:060:03:09

as they move above us, Luke is going to be helping us.

0:03:090:03:12

But stand by, Neurons,

0:03:120:03:14

I have a feeling I may be needing help from all of you.

0:03:140:03:16

Right, I need to get the workshop ready before the engineers arrive.

0:03:160:03:20

Liam likes fishing.

0:03:220:03:24

Kieran likes playing football.

0:03:240:03:27

-Lewis loves drawing.

-I drew a cable car on holiday.

0:03:270:03:31

They go really high up.

0:03:310:03:34

They've got people inside.

0:03:340:03:36

So, today, for one day only,

0:03:360:03:38

Liam, Kieran and Lewis become the Engineers!

0:03:380:03:41

-Hi, guys.

-ALL: Hi, Nina.

0:03:450:03:48

Welcome to my workshop and thanks for your great question,

0:03:480:03:51

how do cable cars work?

0:03:510:03:53

To find out the answer, let's start by using our senses.

0:03:530:03:57

-ALL:

-Woo-woo, a senses experiment! We're ready, Nina.

0:03:570:04:01

Let's have a look at a cable car in action.

0:04:010:04:05

Cable cars move through the sky and they're joined on to something

0:04:050:04:09

called a cable, which is a very strong rope made out of metal.

0:04:090:04:14

This is what a cable looks like.

0:04:140:04:16

Now, have a feel of it, boys. Do you think you could bend or break it?

0:04:180:04:22

-No.

-That's right. The cable has to be very, very strong

0:04:220:04:26

so it can hold all the cars and all those people up in the air.

0:04:260:04:31

And what else did you notice about the cable car?

0:04:310:04:34

-Where were they going?

-Uphill.

-That's right.

0:04:340:04:37

They can take people uphill.

0:04:370:04:38

Sometimes hills are too steep or too rocky for cars to drive up,

0:04:380:04:43

so engineers invented cable cars to take people up and down.

0:04:430:04:47

Come with me and I'll show you how they work.

0:04:470:04:50

This is a model of a cable car and the cars are attached to the cable,

0:04:500:04:56

and when the cable moves, the cars move with it.

0:04:560:05:00

These wheels are very important, and I'll show you what they do.

0:05:020:05:06

Can I ask you to hold this piece of string? You hold a bit.

0:05:060:05:10

You hold a bit for me, my dear, and you as well. That's lovely.

0:05:100:05:14

Thank you, Lewis.

0:05:140:05:16

OK, now we need to keep it nice and tight so it's not floppy.

0:05:160:05:19

Let's see what happens if we move the cable.

0:05:190:05:22

SHE LAUGHS

0:05:240:05:27

The cable car is swinging around.

0:05:270:05:29

Let's put it down.

0:05:310:05:33

So when we move the cables without these wheels,

0:05:330:05:36

it's really quite bumpy,

0:05:360:05:38

and that wouldn't be very nice for the people in the cable cars.

0:05:380:05:41

See how smooth the wheels make it? These wheels are called pulleys.

0:05:410:05:46

A pull me? I like the sound of that!

0:05:460:05:50

Almost, Bud. It's a pulley.

0:05:500:05:52

It's a special wheel that helps move a cable or rope.

0:05:520:05:57

A real cable car has a pulley at both ends just like our model does,

0:05:570:06:01

and the pulleys keep turning, which keeps the cable moving.

0:06:010:06:07

Now, I'm turning the handle which is moving the pulleys at the moment,

0:06:070:06:11

but in a real cable car, a big motor turns the pulleys.

0:06:110:06:15

Those pulleys look way cool. I can see them spinning.

0:06:150:06:19

That's right, Luke. Pulleys are used for all sorts of things.

0:06:190:06:23

They move washing on a washing line. Boats use them to lift their sails.

0:06:230:06:27

Cranes use them to lift heavy things. They are very, very useful.

0:06:270:06:31

But how does the cable car stay up in the air?

0:06:310:06:34

I know a fun place where we can take a ride and see for ourselves.

0:06:340:06:37

Oh, goody. I love this bit. I wonder where Nina is taking us?

0:06:390:06:44

Maybe it's a play park? She said we could go on a ride.

0:06:440:06:48

-I love rides!

-Maybe it's a horse ride.

0:06:480:06:51

Looks like we've arrived, Neurons.

0:06:510:06:54

You wanted to know how does a cable car work, and so far we've found out

0:06:560:07:00

that cable cars move through the air

0:07:000:07:02

because they're joined to strong metal ropes called cables.

0:07:020:07:06

At each end of the cable, there's something called a pulley,

0:07:060:07:09

which helps to keep the cable moving smoothly.

0:07:090:07:12

But how do cable cars stay up in the air?

0:07:120:07:15

This is a cable car crossing the River Thames.

0:07:150:07:18

Look at those cars in the sky. I can't believe my eyes!

0:07:180:07:23

This cable car is a bit different. It doesn't go up mountains.

0:07:230:07:26

Engineers built it to make it easy for people to cross the Thames.

0:07:260:07:30

These big towers hold the cables up high, and keep them nice and tight,

0:07:310:07:36

just like we kept the string nice and tight for our little cable car

0:07:360:07:39

in the workshop.

0:07:390:07:41

The cables have to be very, very high

0:07:410:07:44

to make sure that the cars don't bump into anything.

0:07:440:07:47

They look seriously high, Nina.

0:07:470:07:49

-Can you see the big wheel?

-Yes.

0:07:510:07:54

That's the pulley that helps to move the cable,

0:07:540:07:57

and it's just like the ones we saw in the workshop,

0:07:570:07:59

but it's much bigger

0:07:590:08:00

and it has to be that big so it can hold up the really strong cable.

0:08:000:08:05

This pulley is turned by a big motor

0:08:060:08:08

that keeps the cable moving and moves the cable cars along.

0:08:080:08:12

-It's clever, isn't it?

-Yes, really clever.

0:08:120:08:15

-Shall we have a ride in a cable car?

-ALL: Yes!

-Let's go!

0:08:150:08:19

Yippee! I can't wait!

0:08:190:08:22

There's the pulley.

0:08:220:08:24

A speedboat and a tram!

0:08:300:08:34

-We're getting higher and higher.

-It feels like we're flying!

0:08:390:08:44

Wa-hoo! I love going on rides. This is fabby!

0:08:440:08:49

And we've crossed the river too.

0:08:490:08:51

That is way cool.

0:09:000:09:02

It was, wasn't it?

0:09:020:09:04

There's something else unusual about cable cars.

0:09:070:09:10

Did you notice, when we wanted to get off, our cable car slowed down,

0:09:100:09:14

-but the others further along the cable didn't?

-Yes, Nina.

0:09:140:09:18

All the cars are joined to the same cable,

0:09:180:09:22

but if cars slowed down or stopped when someone wanted to get off,

0:09:220:09:25

it would be a very slow journey,

0:09:250:09:28

so engineers had to find a way to make sure only a few cars

0:09:280:09:31

slowed down to let people off and the rest could keep moving.

0:09:310:09:35

So look at how the cars are joined on to the cable.

0:09:350:09:39

We can see it here too.

0:09:400:09:43

Look, it opens and closes.

0:09:430:09:46

It's a large grip that joins the car on to its cable

0:09:460:09:50

and it's this grip that makes sure only one car slows down at a time.

0:09:500:09:54

Let's go back to the workshop and I'll show you how.

0:09:540:09:57

A real cable car has big grips

0:09:590:10:01

just like the one we saw on our cable car journey.

0:10:010:10:04

This grip holds the cable car on to the cable.

0:10:040:10:07

Lots of things have grips in them, like clothes pegs.

0:10:070:10:13

We use pegs to hold washing on to our washing lines.

0:10:130:10:17

Here's our model cable car from earlier.

0:10:170:10:20

We're using these as grips.

0:10:200:10:24

Watch this.

0:10:240:10:26

As the cable car reaches the end, it has to slow down

0:10:260:10:30

to let the people off, so I'm going to open the grip.

0:10:300:10:33

Now watch what happens.

0:10:330:10:35

-What's happening?

-It stopped.

-That's right.

0:10:380:10:41

The cable is still moving, but the car stopped,

0:10:410:10:44

because it's not gripping on to the cable any more.

0:10:440:10:47

But what happens if I close the grip again?

0:10:470:10:50

-What's happening?

-It's moving.

0:10:520:10:54

Engineering is really clever.

0:10:540:10:57

That's right.

0:10:570:10:58

When the grips are closed, the cars are holding on to the cable

0:10:580:11:02

so they get pulled along by it, but when the grips are open,

0:11:020:11:08

the cars stop, because they're not being pulled by the cable any more,

0:11:080:11:12

and that's when people can get on and off.

0:11:120:11:15

Ooh, all the other cars are still joined to the cable,

0:11:150:11:20

so they're still pulled along and don't stop.

0:11:200:11:22

So your question was, how do cable cars work?

0:11:280:11:31

And I think we've answered it.

0:11:310:11:33

We discovered that engineers invented cable cars to help people

0:11:330:11:36

get up big hills and mountains or across rivers.

0:11:360:11:40

Cable cars move through the air,

0:11:400:11:42

because they're joined to a strong metal rope called a cable.

0:11:420:11:46

At each end of the cable, there's a big pulley that's turned by a motor

0:11:460:11:50

which keeps the cable moving.

0:11:500:11:52

Cable cars are joined to the cable using grips that open and close.

0:11:520:11:58

They grab on to move or they open their grips to slow down,

0:11:580:12:02

and that's when people can get on or off.

0:12:020:12:04

So I hope that's answered your question.

0:12:040:12:06

ALL: Thanks, Nina. Bye.

0:12:060:12:08

I really enjoyed myself today,

0:13:200:13:23

seeing how cable cars move using pulleys.

0:13:230:13:26

It's been a marvellous day. Crossing the river by going up in the sky

0:13:260:13:31

was so clever, and there was no chance of getting wet feet.

0:13:310:13:35

Ah, it's been such a great day, man,
