I took a suitcase on holiday.

I don't take the suitcase on the plane.

To find out the answer, let's start by using our senses.

Whoo-whoo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina!

Oh, and there's my suitcase that I had on holiday.

I should move it out of the way.

I need to find a better way to move this heavy suitcase.

Can you see anything that might help me?

What about the wheels on the suitcase, Nina?

Oh, yes, I could roll it, instead of pushing it. Let me try that.

Oh. Oh, that's much easier.

And it's just given me an idea

to show you how bags are moved at an airport.

Can I ask you to lie down, please?

There you go.

And can I ask you to hold this?

-OLLIE:

-I hope that isn't heavy.

-Don't worry.

The block is made of light foam.

But it's true, you should never lie under heavy things.

OK, guys, I want you to roll this way

and we'll see what happens to the block of foam.

Ready, steady, roll!

Go, go!

NINA LAUGHS

Well done, guys! You can stop there. Up you get.

That was great, and the block of foam moved with you.

That's because you were moving like a conveyor.

A conveyor makes it easier to move heavy things.

And I've got one over here, which I'll show you. Follow me.

It's like lots of wheels all next to each other.

So can I ask you to push my suitcase along the conveyor?

Keep an eye on the rollers.

-FELIX:

-They hardly need to push it, Nina.

-I know.

So what did you notice about the rollers?

-They all go the same way, Nina.

-That's right.

The rollers all move the same way, just like you all moved the same way

when you were rolling under the block of foam.

So can I ask you to push this suitcase along the conveyor again,

but this time just push it halfway and then let go?

-It's stopped, Nina.

-That's right, it did stop.

It only moves when you pull or push it.

So we've discovered that wheels make it easier to move heavy things

like my suitcase and so does a machine called a conveyor.

Engineers needed to work out how to move heavy suitcases

without having to push every one along the conveyor.

So let's roll along to a place where we can see lots of bags

to find out more.

Hmm. Where do you think we're going today?

-BUD:

-Nina said it was somewhere with lots of bags.

Maybe we're going shopping. I love sniffing out a bargain.

-FELIX:

-We'll soon find out. We've arrived!

-So, Engineers, where do you think we are?

-The airport, Nina.

Right. People come here to get on aeroplanes

so they can fly away on holiday.

LUKE: I can see lots of people with heavy suitcases, Nina.

-I wouldn't like to lift all these bags.

-No, that would be hard work.

With so many bags here,

the airport needs machines like conveyors to keep them moving.

-Can I check this bag in, please?

-Yes.

Oh, thank you.

We've got permission to follow my suitcase through the airport.

So let's go.

Here's my suitcase!

-Now, did you notice anything about it?

-It's moving on its own.

That's right. Nobody is pushing it.

This conveyor can move lots of heavy bags and suitcases all at once.

Let me show you how it works.

So, a conveyor has rollers inside it

with a belt that goes around the rollers.

Motors turn the rollers around, which moves the belt.

Oh, this actually reminds me of another experiment, so let's go.

This is a pretend conveyor.

Now, Maisie and Joe, you are going to turn the rollers towards me,

and, Lewis, you're going to put the boxes onto the belt.

So, three, two, one, go!

Oh, very good.

BELLE: It's working, Nina! Just like the real conveyor.

OK, guys, stop, everyone. OK, let's do it one more time.

Joe, have your hands by your side and don't touch the handle.

Maisie, can you turn the handle on the roller towards me? Go.

Keep going.

LUKE: It's still working, Nina.

Right. Instead of turning all the rollers in a conveyor,

only one needs to turn to make the belt move.

So we've learnt that a conveyor moves heavy things

without anyone pushing them, even if only one roller is turning.

Now we know how our suitcases move around the airport,

but we don't know how they get onto the right plane. Let's find out.

This is where the airport sorts all the suitcases

and the slides take the suitcases to the right planes.

LUKE: Those red lights point at the conveyor.

Maybe they're party lights!

Uh-uh! Uh! Uh-uh! Uh! Uh-uh-uh!

Sorry, Bud, they're not party lights.

-There's your suitcase, Nina.

-So it is.

I'd best get it before it goes on a plane.

-OLLIE:

-Nina, your suitcase has a label on it.

Yes, Ollie. That's how the conveyor knows where to send the suitcases.

Every single suitcase gets one of those labels put on it.

Now, you might have seen labels like these on other things, like...

Oh, cereal bars.

There are red lights in supermarkets that read this

and tell how much it costs.

The red lights here at the airport do the same,

but they tell the conveyor which way to send the suitcase.

The red light is like the conveyor's eyes?

Yes. Watching the conveyor has given me an idea for a final experiment.

So let's go, Engineers.

We are going to play a sorting game.

These boxes are the suitcases and they have labels on

to tell us which plane they need to go on.

Some have sunshine labels and they need it go on that plane -

they're off on a beach holiday. Lovely.

Some have snowflake labels and they need to go on that plane -

they're off on a snowy holiday, to somewhere cold.

You guys are like the red lights that read the labels.

You need to send the suitcases down the right slides

to the right planes. So are you ready?

-ALL: Yes!
