0:00:530:00:54

Ooh, oh, hello there!

0:00:550:00:58

I'm just building this jigsaw.

0:00:580:01:01

There's so many different shapes and sizes to fit together.

0:01:010:01:05

Oh, I'm nearly there now.

0:01:050:01:09

Ohh...

0:01:090:01:11

Ooh, hooray, it's finished!

0:01:110:01:14

My very own ship, ha-ha! Oh...

0:01:140:01:17

BEEPING

0:01:180:01:20

I hear a beep, I see a flash, I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:200:01:23

BEEPING

0:01:230:01:24

-Hi Nina!

-Hi, guys!

-We've got a question for you.

0:01:270:01:32

How do we build big ships?

0:01:320:01:35

That's a great question - how do we build big ships?

0:01:350:01:38

Shipbuilding take a lot of very clever engineering.

0:01:380:01:42

Come down and we'll investigate.

0:01:420:01:44

-See you soon, Nina! Bye!

-Bye!

0:01:440:01:48

I'll need help to answer this, and I know just who to ask.

0:01:480:01:53

OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:01:530:01:56

ALL: Neurons at the ready, Nina.

0:02:110:02:14

OK. Today's question is, how do we build big ships?

0:02:140:02:18

Which Neuron will be most useful to help find the answer?

0:02:180:02:22

ALL: Me! Me! Me! Oh, me!

0:02:220:02:25

Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:250:02:28

I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:280:02:31

Will it be beautiful Belle?

0:02:310:02:33

I send messages to brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

0:02:330:02:38

Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:380:02:40

For looking and seeing, day or night,

0:02:400:02:42

I'll help you with your sense of sight.

0:02:420:02:45

Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:450:02:47

If it's pongy or whiffy but you can't tell,

0:02:470:02:50

-my messages help your sense of smell.

-Or will it be baby Bud?

0:02:500:02:54

Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat!

0:02:540:02:58

It's Felix!

0:03:010:03:03

CHEERING

0:03:030:03:05

ALL: Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:03:050:03:09

Marvellous! A little touch can mean so much, Nina.

0:03:120:03:16

Today's question is, how do we build big ships?

0:03:160:03:19

Shipbuilding requires hands-on making and shaping things,

0:03:190:03:23

so Felix, our touch Neuron, will be helping us.

0:03:230:03:26

But, Neurons, I have a feeling I may need help from all of you.

0:03:260:03:31

I need to get the workshop ready before the engineers arrive.

0:03:310:03:36

Rachel loves eating jelly snakes.

0:03:360:03:38

Emmie likes splashing in puddles. Lawa likes dancing.

0:03:380:03:42

-I really like big ships.

-I've been on a ship.

0:03:420:03:47

How are big ships made?

0:03:470:03:50

Today, for one day only, they become the engineers!

0:03:500:03:53

-Hi, guys!

-Hi, Nina!

0:03:580:04:01

Welcome to my workshop and thanks for your question.

0:04:010:04:05

How do we build big ships?

0:04:050:04:07

To find out, let's start by using our senses.

0:04:070:04:10

ALL: Whoop! Woo! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina.

0:04:100:04:15

Why do you think really big ships are useful?

0:04:150:04:18

We can put lots of things on them.

0:04:180:04:20

That's right! Big ships can carry lots of things,

0:04:200:04:24

and also, lots of people. But how do we build them?

0:04:240:04:28

Engineers that build ships are called shipbuilders.

0:04:280:04:32

They had to work out what to make ships out of.

0:04:320:04:35

Let's try some of these.

0:04:350:04:37

This is paper. There's some metal. And some rubber.

0:04:370:04:42

The materials don't look very ship-shape, Nina.

0:04:420:04:45

Well spotted, Luke! Let's try shaping them into ships.

0:04:450:04:48

OK, Rachel, up you come first. We'll do the paper.

0:04:480:04:52

I'll just pop it in there.

0:04:520:04:54

And push it down! That should do it. Open it up.

0:04:550:05:00

Ooh!

0:05:000:05:01

We have a paper ship!

0:05:010:05:04

OK, now, let's try the next one. We have some metal.

0:05:040:05:08

We'll pop it in there.

0:05:080:05:11

And push it down! That should do it!

0:05:120:05:15

Now, open it up! Oh! Lovely!

0:05:150:05:18

We now have paper and metal ships.

0:05:180:05:21

Now, what about the rubber?

0:05:210:05:24

And squash it down, and open it up!

0:05:250:05:29

Oh...

0:05:290:05:31

Oh, dear! The rubber stayed flat!

0:05:310:05:35

We can't change the shape of rubber very easily.

0:05:350:05:38

It springs back, so it would be hard to make a big ship out of rubber.

0:05:380:05:42

Ships also need to be very strong, so let's see which of these -

0:05:420:05:47

the paper or the metal ship - would be best.

0:05:470:05:50

I've got some Mini-Ninas to help us. Let's play sailing!

0:05:500:05:55

OK, guys, stop there.

0:06:080:06:10

Oh, dear. The paper wasn't strong enough. It's lost its shape.

0:06:100:06:16

So paper wouldn't be a good thing to make ships out of.

0:06:160:06:20

But metal is stronger than paper, and it's kept its shape.

0:06:200:06:24

That's why engineers use metal to make lots of things,

0:06:240:06:28

like cars, trains and big ships!

0:06:280:06:32

Big special ships require big special places,

0:06:320:06:35

and that's where we're off to now. Let's go!

0:06:350:06:38

-I wonder where Nina is taking us.

-Nina said it's a big, special place.

0:06:430:06:47

The cinema! That's special, cos you get popcorn!

0:06:470:06:51

No cinema, but it does look big and special.

0:06:510:06:56

This is where they make really big ships. Let's get investigating!

0:06:560:07:01

Everything is so big here.

0:07:070:07:10

This shipyard makes huge ships, and all made out of metal.

0:07:110:07:16

This machine is shaping the flat metal sheets.

0:07:160:07:19

That was a flat piece of metal before.

0:07:230:07:26

Why is that man looking at a picture?

0:07:280:07:31

Shipbuilders need a picture of what the ship's going to look like

0:07:310:07:36

as they're building it. It shows them the sizes and tells them

0:07:360:07:39

where each part of the ship goes. It's a bit like a big jigsaw puzzle.

0:07:390:07:45

But that metal doesn't look like a ship, Nina.

0:07:450:07:48

You're right, Luke! Come on! We need to find something that's ship-shape!

0:07:490:07:53

Wow, that is massive!

0:07:530:07:56

Absolutely magnificent!

0:07:560:07:58

They're building the part of the ship that people live in.

0:07:580:08:02

It's huge, isn't it? But it's only a small part of the whole ship.

0:08:020:08:09

The part we're looking at will fit here on the ship.

0:08:090:08:13

Why are they just making that bit of the ship?

0:08:130:08:17

Good question! Let's investigate!

0:08:170:08:20

Big ships are made in parts,

0:08:210:08:24

and I've got a fun experiment that will explain why!

0:08:240:08:28

These are knitting needles, and you can knit with them like this.

0:08:280:08:32

And you can also make a big woolly jumper.

0:08:320:08:35

Ha-ha!

0:08:350:08:38

These are giant knitting needles!

0:08:380:08:41

Do you think it will be easy to knit a big quilt for your bed with these?

0:08:410:08:46

I'm not sure. They're very big.

0:08:460:08:48

Let's have a go and see if we can make a huge quilt.

0:08:480:08:52

They're getting in a bit of a tangle! Ha-ha!

0:08:560:09:00

Stop there! Oh!

0:09:030:09:07

Do you think it might be easier to knit smaller pieces

0:09:070:09:10

-and then join them all together into one big quilt, like this?

-ALL: Yes!

0:09:100:09:16

Ho-ho! Ho-ho-ho! And it's the same for shipbuilding.

0:09:160:09:22

Ships are so huge that it's much easier to make them in parts

0:09:220:09:26

-and then join them together.

-How are the ship parts joined together?

0:09:260:09:31

Brilliant question! Come with me and we'll find out.

0:09:310:09:34

Wow! What's he doing?

0:09:390:09:41

Let's go back to my workshop and I'll show you.

0:09:420:09:45

Your question was, how do we build big ships?

0:09:470:09:51

We've discovered it's easier to build them in parts

0:09:510:09:54

and then join them together later, like we just saw.

0:09:540:09:58

But how are the ship parts joined together? Let's investigate!

0:09:580:10:02

We're going to copy this picture

0:10:020:10:05

and make our very own special ship, out of chocolate!

0:10:050:10:09

A chocolate ship! Ye-e-e-e-s!

0:10:090:10:12

When the metal parts of the ship are joined together,

0:10:120:10:16

it's called welding. That's what we saw earlier.

0:10:160:10:20

To weld things together, we need to heat up the edges

0:10:200:10:23

so they start to melt and become a sticky liquid.

0:10:230:10:26

-What do we need to weld our chocolate ship?

-Heat.

0:10:260:10:31

And we're going to use this bottle. It has hot water in it.

0:10:310:10:35

Remember, it's important not to touch hot water, or it could burn you.

0:10:350:10:40

OK, Rachel, you can get us started.

0:10:400:10:44

OK, ohhh! Ohh!

0:10:440:10:49

The edges are getting nice and sticky now.

0:10:490:10:52

So if you press them together, Rachel,

0:10:520:10:55

and pop them into your stand to cool down...

0:10:550:10:59

Excellent!

0:10:590:11:01

Maybe Nina will nibble the ship's deck!

0:11:290:11:32

ALL LAUGH

0:11:320:11:34

Welding is really clever engineering.

0:11:340:11:37

Heating the edges makes them melt and go sticky

0:11:370:11:40

and when you hold the sticky edges together and let them cool,

0:11:400:11:44

they'll join up and stay together.

0:11:440:11:47

Metal for ships is joined up in exactly the same way,

0:11:470:11:50

but with a lot more heat.

0:11:500:11:52

# Nina and the Neurons! #

0:11:520:11:57

Your question was, how do we build big ships?

0:11:570:12:00

I think we've answered it.

0:12:000:12:02

We discovered that engineers use metal to make ships

0:12:020:12:06

because they can change its shape and it's very strong.

0:12:060:12:10

The easiest and quickest way to build a big ship

0:12:100:12:13

is to make the parts on their own and then join them by welding,

0:12:130:12:17

just like we did with our chocolate ship.

0:12:170:12:21

I hope that's answered your question.

0:12:210:12:24

Thanks, Nina, bye!
