0:00:510:00:55

Hello. I found these springy things in my drawer.

0:00:570:01:01

And if you push it down...

0:01:010:01:03

Ha ha! And let go... Oh!

0:01:050:01:08

Oh, ha ha!

0:01:080:01:10

It springs back up. Great fun.

BEEPING

0:01:130:01:15

I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.

0:01:150:01:19

Hi, Nina!

0:01:250:01:27

Hello there.

0:01:270:01:29

I have a question for you.

0:01:290:01:31

What makes my bed so bouncy?

0:01:310:01:34

Oh, that's a great question.

0:01:340:01:36

What makes my bed so bouncy?

0:01:360:01:38

A bouncy bed is a really useful invention.

0:01:380:01:41

But what makes a bed bouncy?

0:01:410:01:43

Why don't you come to my workshop and we'll check it out?

0:01:430:01:47

Bye, Nina! See you soon!

0:01:470:01:51

Bye.

0:01:510:01:52

I'll need some help to answer this one, and I know just who to ask.

0:01:520:01:57

OK, Neurons, time to get to work.

0:01:570:02:00

Neurons at the ready, Nina!

0:02:160:02:18

OK. Today's question is what makes my bed so bouncy?

0:02:190:02:24

Which Neuron would be most useful to find the answer?

0:02:240:02:27

ALL: Me! Me! Me! Me! Me!

0:02:270:02:30

Will it be fabulous Felix?

0:02:300:02:33

I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.

0:02:330:02:37

Will it be...beautiful Belle?

0:02:370:02:40

I send messages to brain from ear.

0:02:400:02:42

-If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.

-Will it be lovely Luke?

0:02:420:02:46

For looking or seeing, day or night,

0:02:460:02:48

-I'll help you with your sense of sight.

-Will it be awesome Ollie?

0:02:480:02:52

If it's pongy or whiffy, but you can't tell,

0:02:520:02:55

-my messages help your sense of smell.

-Will it be baby Bud?

0:02:550:02:59

Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.

0:02:590:03:04

ELECTRONIC BEEPING

0:03:040:03:06

It's Felix!

0:03:080:03:09

-Oh!

-Go, Felix!

0:03:090:03:11

Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:03:110:03:14

Go, Felix! Go, Felix! Go, Felix!

0:03:140:03:16

-Go, Felix!

-Marvellous. A little touch can mean so much, Nina.

0:03:160:03:22

Thanks, Felix.

0:03:220:03:23

Today's question is what makes my bed so bouncy?

0:03:230:03:26

Felix will be helping, because he can FEEL how bouncy something is.

0:03:260:03:31

But stand by, I may need help from all of you.

0:03:310:03:33

I need to get the workshop ready before the Inventors arrive.

0:03:330:03:37

Elouise, Bethany and Zoe want to find out about bouncy beds,

0:03:400:03:44

beds that are comfy, or springy, cosy and sinky-inny.

0:03:440:03:48

So, today, for one day only,

0:03:480:03:49

Elouise, Bethany and Zoe become the Inventors.

0:03:490:03:53

-Hi, guys!

-Hi, Nina.

0:03:570:03:59

Come on in. Welcome to my workshop. It's lovely to see you.

0:03:590:04:04

Your question is, "What makes my bed so bouncy?"

0:04:040:04:07

-So, why do you want to know that?

-I love my bouncy, comfy bed

0:04:070:04:12

and I just want to know what makes it so bouncy.

0:04:120:04:15

Oh, well, on our beds we have mattresses.

0:04:150:04:19

So, let's find out if it's the mattress that's bouncy

0:04:190:04:22

and there's a mattress over here. Let's gently kneel down

0:04:220:04:27

onto the mattress...Oh!

0:04:270:04:30

And let's see if the mattress is bouncy.

0:04:300:04:32

THEY GIGGLE

0:04:320:04:35

-The mattress is definitely bouncy.

-Bouncing is a fabulous feeling

0:04:350:04:40

because it makes you feel as light as air.

0:04:400:04:43

Whoo! Ah! Whoo-hoo!

0:04:430:04:45

If mattresses weren't bouncy, they wouldn't be very comfortable.

0:04:450:04:50

But we really shouldn't bounce on our beds. Sorry, guys.

0:04:500:04:53

I think we should stand up now.

0:04:530:04:55

Oh!

0:04:550:04:57

So, we know that mattresses are bouncy, but why?

0:04:570:05:01

Let's get inside and have a closer look. Follow me.

0:05:010:05:04

Now, taking things apart is my job.

0:05:060:05:08

-It can be dangerous, so don't do this yourself.

-That's right.

0:05:080:05:13

Nina's been specially trained.

0:05:130:05:15

There are lots of sharp bits inside that could harm you.

0:05:150:05:18

This is what the inside of a mattress looks like.

0:05:180:05:21

-There are loads of springs.

-Yeah, big springs.

0:05:210:05:27

Now, let me have a look with my Nina-Cam.

0:05:270:05:29

Whoo! Whoo!

0:05:290:05:32

Would you like a closer look at that, guys?

0:05:320:05:36

Just be careful, it's got a little jaggy end.

0:05:360:05:39

-It's very springy.

-That's right.

0:05:390:05:41

-You can make it smaller, but it'll just spring back again.

-Exactly.

0:05:420:05:47

It's this springiness that makes beds so comfortable to lie in.

0:05:470:05:51

The springs let us land softly on a mattress when we lie down.

0:05:510:05:55

Imagine lying down on a hard stony floor at bedtime

0:05:550:06:00

instead of a lovely, bouncy bed. Oh!

0:06:000:06:04

But it's not just us that need to land softly.

0:06:040:06:07

Something very big and very exciting needs to land softly too.

0:06:070:06:10

-Shall we go and see another invention?

-Yeah!

0:06:100:06:13

OK. Let's go.

0:06:130:06:15

Oh! I wonder where we're going today.

0:06:210:06:24

I love seeing the big inventions.

0:06:240:06:27

BELLE: Um... Something big that needs to land softly.

0:06:270:06:32

I just haven't got a clue what that could be.

0:06:320:06:36

-OLLIE:

-Well, I think we're about to find out.

0:06:360:06:38

Looks like we've arrived.

0:06:380:06:40

ENGINE WHIRRS

0:06:420:06:44

Oh!

0:06:460:06:47

This truck is called a monster truck and you can see why.

0:06:510:06:55

It's not like any other truck.

0:06:550:06:57

Look at those wheels, they're enormous.

0:06:580:07:01

Is it going to drive over those cars?

0:07:040:07:06

I think it is!

0:07:070:07:08

There it goes.

0:07:080:07:11

THEY GIGGLE

0:07:160:07:18

Wow!

0:07:200:07:21

The cars are getting all squashed.

0:07:230:07:26

Oh, oh!

0:07:260:07:27

Look at the way the monster truck

0:07:270:07:29

bounces when it drops back down the other side.

0:07:290:07:32

Wow!

0:07:320:07:34

So something as huge and monstrous as a monster truck

0:07:340:07:38

can be bouncy too. Let's go and look.

0:07:380:07:40

-I can see springs.

-They're bigger than the springs on my mattress.

0:07:440:07:48

They certainly are. These springs help the truck to bounce.

0:07:480:07:52

But what makes springs so bouncy?

0:07:520:07:54

Come on, Inventors, let's go back to the workshop and get inventing!

0:07:540:07:59

It's good that mattresses are so bouncy,

0:08:010:08:04

but who invented the springy mattress?

0:08:040:08:08

Oh, oh! I know that.

0:08:080:08:11

Mattresses have been around for a long, long time.

0:08:110:08:15

But unfortunately, they were not very comfortable.

0:08:150:08:19

Look at him - tossing and turning.

0:08:200:08:22

His mattress is made from straw.

0:08:220:08:24

That man trying to get to sleep is Heinrich Westfal.

0:08:260:08:30

One night, many years ago, he had an idea.

0:08:300:08:34

If he put bouncy springs into his mattress instead of straw

0:08:350:08:39

it may make it super comfy and very bouncy.

0:08:390:08:42

Next thing he knew, he was fast asleep

0:08:420:08:46

and never had an uncomfy sleep ever again. Lovely.

0:08:460:08:50

So, your question was, "What makes my bed so bouncy?"

0:08:520:08:56

We've found out that beds are bouncy because they have springs in.

0:08:560:09:00

But what makes a spring so springy?

0:09:000:09:03

Well, I think we need to get inventing to find out.

0:09:030:09:06

So, the first thing we need to do is cut out our special shapes.

0:09:060:09:11

Next, we're going to stick down one of our shapes.

0:09:160:09:20

Put glue on the back and stick it on the cardboard.

0:09:200:09:23

Glue it on.

0:09:240:09:25

Good, smoothing it down.

0:09:250:09:27

Now, let's cut it out.

0:09:300:09:32

Be very careful when you're using scissors, they can be sharp.

0:09:330:09:38

There we go. Next, we're making our springs.

0:09:380:09:41

Take a strip of each colour

0:09:410:09:43

and hold it like that.

0:09:430:09:46

I'm going to take a piece of sticky tape to hold it together.

0:09:460:09:50

There we go.

0:09:520:09:54

Then, take the strip that's underneath

0:09:540:09:57

and fold it over.

0:09:570:09:59

Then, take the other strip and fold it that way

0:10:010:10:05

and keep doing that,

0:10:050:10:06

and you're still keeping that nice, straight edge.

0:10:060:10:10

That's great.

0:10:120:10:13

Let's have a closer look at this springy thing.

0:10:200:10:23

If I press it down...

0:10:230:10:26

it goes down like that...

0:10:260:10:27

and if I let it go... Whoo!

0:10:270:10:30

..it goes back up again. The reason it's springy

0:10:300:10:33

is because it wants to get back to the shape it was in.

0:10:330:10:37

To do that, it has to... push back upwards.

0:10:370:10:41

So, let's use our springy springs in our mattress. Let's get sticking!

0:10:410:10:46

Give it a good squash down.

0:10:510:10:53

It's sticky! But it's great fun.

0:10:530:10:58

So, now we need to take the top of our mattress, the yellow bit,

0:11:000:11:05

and let's cover it in glue because then we can stick in on top

0:11:050:11:09

and hold it down.

0:11:090:11:10

Oh! So, well done, Inventors.

0:11:130:11:15

We've made our very own mattresses but they look a bit bare.

0:11:150:11:19

Why doesn't everyone take a duvet cover?

0:11:190:11:23

That's brilliant.

0:11:230:11:25

It's going to have to be somebody's bed now.

0:11:250:11:28

So, is there anyone lying around here that might need a bed?

0:11:280:11:32

Little Ted. Aw!

0:11:320:11:35

Let's pop him in bed. There you go.

0:11:350:11:37

You can put your favourite doll or action figure in.

0:11:370:11:41

They'd have a lovely night's sleep in a beautiful bouncy bed.

0:11:410:11:45

Your question was, "What makes my bed so bouncy?"

0:11:480:11:51

We've answered it. We've found out most mattresses

0:11:510:11:55

are bouncy because they have springs in them, which are bouncy

0:11:550:11:59

because when you stretch them and squash them together

0:11:590:12:03

they always want to go back to their shape.

0:12:030:12:06

When you roll around in your mattress, you push the springs down

0:12:060:12:10

and the springs push back up again. That's why mattresses are so bouncy.

0:12:100:12:15

-Thanks for your brilliant question.

-Thanks, Nina! Bye.

0:12:150:12:20

Bye.

0:12:200:12:21

If you want to make today's invention,

0:12:260:12:29

just go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website.

0:12:290:12:32

That gives you instructions you need to make your own,

I've had a fabby day.

0:13:210:13:23

I liked all the boinging bouncing on the beds best,

0:13:230:13:28

-although Nina said you shouldn't do that.

-I really enjoyed myself,

0:13:280:13:33

especially when we saw what the inside of a mattress looks like.

0:13:330:13:37

-It's really springy.

-It's been such a great day, man.

0:13:370:13:42

We saw some mean-looking monsters.

0:13:420:13:45

Well, monster trucks. Ha ha!

0:13:450:13:48

It's been a marvellous day.

0:13:490:13:51

I enjoyed watching the Inventors make those paper springs.

0:13:510:13:56

They made the mattress so comfortable.
