Scary Ninja Skills Nine Minute Ninja

Time to get my ninja on.

And my clothes.

TING!

The Art Ninja goblin puppet - a companion that's furry good!

So, I've got myself some sponges,

and I'm going to cut this big one here,

just along where the curve meets the straight line.

This is for his head and jaw.

And these other ones, just normal washing-up sponges,

where these two grooves are, cut along there.

And I'm going to cut along this strip here.

And then cut them in half.

And these are going to make the eyebrows of the goblin.

I'm going to start cutting some triangles into that bit that's left.

Take care with sharp scissors.

These two with the line across the tip, they're going to be the ears,

and this one here with the overhang, that's going to be the nose.

These pieces will be the goblin's horns.

I want the horns to have a bit of texture, a bit of twist,

so I'm going to use a bit of string to tie a knot round the top,

and then I'm just going to wrap it around.

Snip off the excess,

then I'm going to stick it in place with some strong glue.

I'm going to do the same with the other one

to create that twisted horn texture.

Now I'm going to glue on all the little bits I've just cut out,

starting with the nose.

You can cut out any shapes you like to customise your goblin.

Put the ears on.

Horns on.

If they don't stick right away,

hold them in place for a few seconds.

Now, onto the eyebrows.

Now you need to decide is he going to be a happy goblin,

by maybe having them up like this,

or maybe a more mean and nasty goblin,

by having them down like that?

I'm trying to make a friend,

so I'm going to make mine nice and happy.

Looking good so far. Now I'm going to paint him a nice goblin green.

When painting sponges you'll need loads of paint

cos they're really absorbent.

And dabbing seems to work better than a long brushstroke.

Don't forget to put some paper down if you're doing this at home.

I'm going to do the horns yellow.

Right, just going to put that to one side to dry

while I draw the inside of a goblin mouth.

To paint the mouth, add white to the colours

to make them a little bit lighter.

I think the tongue should have some nice yellow spots on it.

Now a nice green goblin tongue.

There you go. I'm going to paint all around the outside

and this little space here black.

Right, if you're doing this at home you'll need to wait for that to dry,

but I wait for nothing cos I'm the Art Ninja.

-WHIP CRACKS

-There we go, nice and dry.

Using black pen, add an outline to your mouth

to make the colours pop out.

This card is your puppet's mouth

and you'll operate this to make him speak.

I'm going to glue this on the inside of the sponges here,

making sure the tongue's at the bottom.

Fold it like that. I'm going to put glue on this side, as well.

You see how the mouth is going to open and close now?

To give you more control, it's good to put a cardboard strip over the

back so that when you open your hand the top of the mouth comes with it.

Attach it securely with sticky tape.

But right now, he can't see,

so I'm going to add some eyes using a ping-pong ball.

Now, you need to cut it in half.

That can be quite tricky so get an adult to help you.

I don't need any help,

I'm a ninja.

Now I'm just going to draw some nice black pupils.

Stick the eyes to the goblin's face, again using some strong glue.

Ra-ra-ra!

Some teeth. With some cardboard I've cut this already.

I'm going to give him an under bite.

Nice bit of character.

But, he's a puppet and you can see my hand.

So I'm going to give him a lovely furry hide.

I've got some fun fur here. I've cut out these shapes.

This nice long strip's for the body,

and this bit's going to go around the head.

It's easier to put glue onto the sponge than it is to the fur.

I'm going to push the fur on like that.

Glue these edges along the edge of the cardboard.

Holding the fur in place will help it stick.

For the second piece of fur, glue around the back

of the goblin's head before gently sticking the fur head piece to it.

And then glue together the body material at the back.

And then I'm going to stick the edges here

to the body material, too.

I've got some arms here that I've made

from tubes of the same material, and some hands.

Simply glue them in place.

And, as a final touch to his chin, paint on some warts -

he is a goblin, after all!

Let's make it so that you can control his arms.

For that I'm going to use two kebabs skewers.

I'm going to stick one in this arm, one in the other.

Just push it into the sponge.

GOBLINS CHATTERING

You can make your goblin puppets any shape or size you like.

Look at these mischievous critters.

They're more cute than scary, I'd say.

Here's a quick art tip on how to draw someone truly scary.

The best way to draw a scary character is to use pointy shapes,

so I'm going to start by drawing

a face that's an upside-down triangle shape,

then I'm going to add slanty eyes that lean in to the centre.

This makes him look a lot more mean and angry.

You can accentuate that with some eyebrows doing the same thing.

Then have a pointy nose...

and ears.

And I think my scary character's going to be a vampire,

so I'm going to draw the mouth with some fangs.

Just pop some hair in there.

Then, with the body, I'm going to keep it quite thin and lean.

He's going to be doing a scary pose, putting his arms in the air.

Maybe in this pose he's doing a nasty laugh, going, "Wa-ha-ha!"

Going to add some big scary claws on the end.

To finish, I'm going to add a pointy collar,

bat wings under the arms...

..and a nice big moon to make his surroundings scary.

Vampires never come out in the daytime.

There you go.

A quick art tip.

Now try and draw your own scary character.

It could be shockingly good.

LOUNGE JAZZ PLAYS

Here's how you make it. You'll need two pieces of card,

one white and one black,

and a pair of scissors.

With care, cut some shapes from the card -

two arms from the white,

eyes and nose from the black.

Next, you need a white plastic bag...

..and some double-sided sticky tape.

Use the tape to stick the eyes and mouth to the bag.

Peely-peely, sticky-sticky.

Stick the arms on, too.

Now you need a white balloon.

Inflate said balloon, but do not tie it.

Careful now, don't let go of that balloon.

Put the balloon inside the bag while holding the end.

It now looks like a scary ghost.

It's very convincing(!)

The gassy ghost!

Why don't you make one and let one go?
