Robotic Ninja Skills Nine Minute Ninja

Time to get my Ninja on.

And my clothes.

KNOCK ON DOOR

Been clearing out the attic at home.

There's loads of your rubbish up there.

One of your old robots in there

and you used to love this, your old pogo stick.

-I must give that a go.

Hey, cotton buds. I wonder what these are for?

I know, I could use them

to make a painting of this robot made up of tiny dots.

Just grab some paper

and I'm going to draw myself a couple of guidelines before I start.

I'm drawing my robot, but you can do anything.

That's my outline done.

Now I'm going to use the cotton buds to make the points on my picture.

I'm going to start putting silver around the robot's head.

This technique is called Pointillism

and is often associated with the artist Georges Seurat.

You find that the more you use the cotton buds, the bigger the end gets

and it is hard to get a nice, defined dot,

but the great thing about cotton buds is that you can turn it around

and you've got another end you can use.

I think that is enough with the silver, let's move on to some red.

He has got red outline through his eyes so we'll do those first.

I can't believe Dad brought more stuff round, when I've just finished

cleaning up the flat. Still, I think it is going to make a tidy picture.

Right, let's add some nice yellow in there.

I wonder what Robot would say about this picture?

Or something like that.

It's time to come together now.

I'm going to add a little bit more silver on the top.

Now I'm going to mix a little bit of black and silver together,

to get a dark silver, to do some shadows and some worn areas.

Adds a little bit of texture and depth.

There we are.

I'd say that is finished.

And it looks awesome.

Just going to put a frame on it.

I really do love a good walk around Bristol.

The beautiful colours, there is lots of variation in the landscape

and there is always something going on. Just look at that over there.

HEN CLUCKS

Good grief, that got out of hand pretty quickly.

This kind of animation is called cutter animation

and it is really easy to do.

If you do it using photographs, it gives off this really surreal sense

and is always really funny.

I will show you how to do it.

All you need to make a little rad cut-out animation is -

some postcards or photographs, here are some I have taken,

a pair of scissors and a tablet or Smartphone.

There is lots of free animation software you can find online

and you can make this animation in just three Ninja Moves.

Ninja Move No 1.

Get yourselves some photographs. You might go and take some

or if you've got any old postcards, they're pretty good too.

I've got some here from when I visited my friend's chicken farm,

when I went to the beach,

there is one of my friend Gemma in there and of course,

what I am going to use as the main scene is this picture of Bristol

that I took cos it's got the river in it and a bit of depth,

so maybe got some places where things can pop out.

Ninja Move No 2.

Decide what's going to happen in your animation

and then get all the bits ready.

So I'm going to be cutting out these separate parts here

and what I am actually going to do on this one is cut out the sky.

I've got a spare bit of blue paper here which is going to replace it.

It will be a lot easier to have things popping out underneath

as a different layer.

I have got another tower. I'm going to cut that one out.

If I pop this in where the other one used to be,

because it is like a separate layer, I can animate this, going...

-HE MAKES ROCKET NOISES

-..out from behind the trees.

It is quite fun to mess around with scale

when you are doing these things, makes it a lot weirder.

You put something out of place but also it is giant or really small.

HE CLUCKS LIKE A HEN

-That's a good-looking chicken.

I might keep this bit here because I could use all these nice stony,

sort of orangey colours as the fire for the rocket.

I could use that black and white as the smoke for the rocket.

This bit is perfect.

And I could use the back as a bit of white for her flash.

Ninja Move No 3.

Get animating.

Time to open up my animation app.

It has begun.

The first thing I'm going to have is a person popping out here

and taking a picture.

So I am cutting this line along where the buildings are

so it looks like she is coming up between the trees and the buildings.

Now what I am doing here is I am making the character wiggle

a little bit and that is to give the illusion

that they're like maybe talking. "Hello."

Don't worry about making mouths move, I think in this style,

the cruder, the better.

Every time you move a bit of paper, take a photo.

You are building your animation.

OK, that's all the frames. I'm going to add some sound effects.

Here is a real quick art tip, how to make a rocket blast off into space.

To discover maybe some extraterrestrial business.

So I'm going to start with the rocket.

The shape there like that with a nice point on the end.

And then some wings at the back.

An exhaust.

Nice line there on the tip.

And we need to draw the passenger in the middle.

Now to make my rocket blast off,

I am going to put fire using these zigzag lines

and some smoke, trailing behind.

Now I am going to add a couple of action lines around it

and show its energy.

And then of course, he is in space, so I'm going to add some

space surroundings and that is a nice planet here and stars.

There you go.

Here is how you make it.

You need a bowl of cornflour.

A jug of water.

Add a small amount to the bowl.

Grab some poster paint.

Green is very now for aliens.

Squeeze some paint into the bowl, other colours are available.

Stir vigorously.

Keep stirring and adding water gradually to get the right

gloopy consistency.

It has a strange intergalactic feel.

It can snap and dribble through your fingers.

Freaky!
