Time to get my ninja on. And my clothes.

0:00:050:00:08

I'm going to make some bookends made of rubber gloves

0:00:240:00:27

and decorated in the style of famous artist Jackson Pollock.

0:00:270:00:30

Here's a Jackson Pollock picture now.

0:00:300:00:32

He fixed his canvas to the floor or wall

0:00:320:00:34

and, using a paintbrush, he threw lines of paint on it.

0:00:340:00:37

This became known as action painting.

0:00:370:00:40

So first, I'm going to make my canvas,

0:00:400:00:42

and in this case that is a cast of a rubber glove,

0:00:420:00:45

so I'm going to start by drawing round a bowl on this

0:00:450:00:47

piece of cardboard. You can use a mug, that's about the same size.

0:00:470:00:51

Now I'm going to cut that out.

0:00:520:00:54

To get my scissors in there, I'm going to make a hole first.

0:00:540:00:57

I'm using sticky tack underneath the card

0:00:570:00:59

to help push the pencil through.

0:00:590:01:01

It makes it easier to cut out.

0:01:010:01:02

Nice big bucket.

0:01:090:01:10

Put the cardboard on top and now here's the tricky bit.

0:01:100:01:13

I'm going to hang an old rubber glove through the hole.

0:01:130:01:16

And I'm going to attach it to the edge of this circle

0:01:160:01:19

with some sticky tape.

0:01:190:01:20

When I say "some," I mean "a lot",

0:01:200:01:22

because this is going to have to hold some weight.

0:01:220:01:24

As this is quite fiddly, you might need some help

0:01:250:01:28

and I recommend working around one bit at a time.

0:01:280:01:30

Rubber gloves tend to be powdery on the inside,

0:01:330:01:35

so wash them out first and it will help the tape stick.

0:01:350:01:39

Right, that's looking good. Now I need to mix up some plaster of Paris.

0:01:390:01:42

You'll need to follow the instructions on your

0:01:420:01:45

plaster of Paris packet

0:01:450:01:46

but, as a guide, it's twice as much plaster to water

0:01:460:01:50

and you always add the powder to the water.

0:01:500:01:52

Might be good to stick on an apron

0:01:520:01:54

because it does tend to go everywhere.

0:01:540:01:57

Make sure you've stirred in all of the lumps.

0:01:570:02:00

It's starting to thicken now.

0:02:000:02:01

Keep stirring until it is smooth and pourable.

0:02:010:02:04

And when it's at that stage,

0:02:040:02:05

you need to act pretty fast, cos it starts to harden.

0:02:050:02:08

Make sure all of it's in, and I've left a little bit of room

0:02:140:02:17

at the top as it expands. And flick the fingers to make sure

0:02:170:02:21

all the bubbles are released,

0:02:210:02:22

and this means you have a nice, solid, strong cast.

0:02:220:02:25

If you're doing this at home, you'll need to wait for it to harden,

0:02:250:02:28

but not me. I'm the Art Ninja.

0:02:280:02:30

Nice and hard.

0:02:330:02:35

Remove the sticky tape to release the cast from the cardboard.

0:02:350:02:38

There we go.

0:02:380:02:39

Now I need to carefully cut down the back of the glove to get my cast out.

0:02:390:02:43

If you're just pulling, it's likely to break it.

0:02:430:02:46

Hey!

0:02:500:02:52

Now I need to decorate it, so I need to get some action painting in.

0:02:520:02:55

Now I'm going to flick it just like Jackson Pollock.

0:03:000:03:03

Let's start with some yellow.

0:03:030:03:04

If you're doing this at home, you'd better put lots of paper down.

0:03:220:03:26

I'll try a few ninja moves.

0:03:290:03:30

Hai, ii-ya!

0:03:300:03:32

Look at that.

0:03:320:03:33

Now let me give you a hand at drawing hands.

0:03:370:03:40

So I'm going to start by drawing the wrist.

0:03:410:03:43

And then I'm going to draw a half circle to give me

0:03:430:03:46

a guide for the palm.

0:03:460:03:47

I'm going to use a pencil as a guide which I can rub out later.

0:03:470:03:51

And then also I'm going to do a couple of lines here to give me

0:03:510:03:55

a guide for the size of the fingers.

0:03:550:03:56

The largest finger is the middle finger

0:03:560:03:59

and they need to be smaller either side, so index and little finger.

0:03:590:04:02

So I'm going to start drawing the fingers in

0:04:040:04:07

and the middle finger is the longest.

0:04:070:04:09

Get smaller towards the little finger and towards the index finger.

0:04:100:04:15

Now to draw the thumb, extend out slightly from the palm

0:04:150:04:18

and then up to the base of the four fingers

0:04:180:04:20

and then curve it back down into the palm.

0:04:200:04:22

OK, I'm just going to draw up the other side of the hand here

0:04:220:04:25

and then at the base of the fingers just below,

0:04:250:04:27

I'm going to draw a line across like a crease in the hand.

0:04:270:04:29

Now you have the basics, practise drawing hands in different poses.

0:04:290:04:34

I'm going to draw a hand in profile.

0:04:340:04:36

Now I'm going to draw a hand pointing.

0:04:360:04:38

There you go. Quick art tip.

0:04:430:04:46

So, you can draw hands, how about making some gloves to put on them?

0:04:530:04:57

The Art Ninja knit-free fingerless gloves.

0:04:590:05:03

So I've got myself an old sticky tape loop. It's all finished.

0:05:030:05:07

And

0:05:070:05:10

ten lolly sticks,

0:05:100:05:11

and I'm going to lay them down just over a finger's width apart.

0:05:110:05:15

Great. Now I'm going to get out some sticky tape,

0:05:170:05:21

and take a good length,

0:05:210:05:22

and I'm going to lay it about a third of the way down the lolly sticks,

0:05:220:05:27

and just make sure all of them are stuck without sticking to the table.

0:05:270:05:32

There we go.

0:05:320:05:33

Turn it over so the sticky side is facing up,

0:05:330:05:35

and I'm going to roll my sticky tape loop across them.

0:05:350:05:38

OK, it's picked it up.

0:05:390:05:41

There we go.

0:05:430:05:44

Perfect.

0:05:440:05:45

So all of these now are equal distance around the

0:05:450:05:48

sticky tape loop, and this will become my loom.

0:05:480:05:52

Cool.

0:05:520:05:54

And I'm going to take my wool,

0:05:540:05:56

and just put a little bit of the length through the loop, and then

0:05:560:06:00

I'm going to start wrapping it round each of the lolly sticks, like this.

0:06:000:06:04

Wrap and loop, wrap and loop.

0:06:040:06:07

Now, I'm wrapping these loops around quite loose,

0:06:070:06:10

as I need the tension to be loose for the next step.

0:06:100:06:13

OK. Now the fun bit. I've got a loop round every single lolly stick,

0:06:180:06:23

and I'm going to do a loop round the first one I did.

0:06:230:06:25

And then

0:06:250:06:27

pull the bottom loop over the top loop

0:06:270:06:29

and down the other side of the lolly stick.

0:06:290:06:32

And this is where all the stitches and loops start to interlock.

0:06:320:06:36

Every time I make a new loop,

0:06:360:06:37

the bottom loop goes over the top of it,

0:06:370:06:40

tying the whole thing together.

0:06:400:06:41

And eventually,

0:06:410:06:43

it will start flowing through the middle of our tube like that.

0:06:430:06:47

Now, this can take a little while, so I'm going to do it at ninja speed.

0:06:480:06:52

Using thicker wool gets you quicker results,

0:06:560:06:58

as it starts to build up faster.

0:06:580:07:00

Nearly there now.

0:07:040:07:06

Right, that's looking pretty good.

0:07:090:07:11

You can see how it's all come together through the loom.

0:07:110:07:15

Even though the technique isn't traditional knitting,

0:07:150:07:17

the end result looks pretty convincing.

0:07:170:07:20

Now I need to get it off of my makeshift loom.

0:07:200:07:23

I can't just pull it off, because it'll drop all these stitches

0:07:230:07:25

and the whole thing would unravel, so I need to cast it off properly.

0:07:250:07:29

So I'm going to get a good length of wool...

0:07:300:07:32

..and cut it.

0:07:340:07:36

Now I'm going to post the thread

0:07:380:07:41

through each of my loops, so pull the loop up,

0:07:410:07:45

post the loose thread through it...

0:07:450:07:46

..pull it through like that.

0:07:490:07:50

And then I can just slide that entire loop off of the loom. There we go.

0:07:500:07:54

Now move on to the next one. Lift up the loop

0:07:540:07:57

and push it through.

0:07:570:07:59

And you can see it gradually coming off the loom

0:07:590:08:03

as we cast it off.

0:08:030:08:04

Last one.

0:08:060:08:07

Look at that.

0:08:120:08:14

Looks great!

0:08:140:08:16

Tie a knot in the loose ends of the wool, so they don't unravel.

0:08:160:08:19

There we go.

0:08:210:08:22

Get rid of that bit.

0:08:220:08:24

So now I've got one,

0:08:240:08:26

but I need to ninja myself another one.

0:08:260:08:28

There we go. Right. Might as well try them on.

0:08:300:08:34

When you get to the end, about there,

0:08:340:08:37

find a little hole in the stitch, pop your thumb through.

0:08:370:08:41

There we are!

0:08:410:08:42

Now, you don't just have to make green ones.

0:08:420:08:44

You can change colours to create a stripy pattern,

0:08:440:08:47

and you can experiment with different sized looms,

0:08:470:08:50

like this cake tin I've used to make this rad hat.

0:08:500:08:52
