Sweet Ninja Skills Nine Minute Ninja

Time to get my ninja on.

And my clothes.

Breakfast time.

Eurgh! Brown flakes?

Hopefully, there's something more interesting up here.

Aw, yeah!

Flying saucer sweets. I forgot I had these.

I'm going to make a Venus flytrap to stash my sweets in.

The Art Ninja Venus Flytrap. It's totally sweet.

I'm going to do that by blowing up a balloon.

Perfect. Tie a knot on the end.

I've got a bowl here to hold the balloon still

while I cover it in a layer of paper-mache

That's two parts PVA glue, one part water and some old newspapers.

You want to get a good coverage all the way round,

all the way down to the bottom.

Just leaving the little knot sticking out.

You don't have to be too neat, because all these creases

and crumply bits will add to the final texture.

Now, if you're doing one of these,

you'll probably have to do a few more layers.

And wait for it to dry. But me? I'm just going to use my ninja skills.

Nice.

Now the paper-mache mix has dried nice and hard,

and we no longer need the balloon to hold its shape,

so we can pop that now.

OK.

Now I'm going to draw a line around the balloon,

just below the halfway mark.

Then I'm going to draw some wavy lines for the teeth.

And the same along the bottom.

I'm going to poke a hole through the paper-mache with a pencil

so that I can get my scissors in.

These are going to make the jaws of my Venus flytrap.

Nice. Now I'm going to chop the teeth out.

So, we have the top and bottom all finished.

But this Venus flytrap is going to need a stalk,

and we're going to make that using a cardboard tube.

I'm cutting slits down the side

so that it's easier to secure to the paper-mache.

This is a very sticky piece of art.

Great. Look at that. It's on - nice and solid.

Now is probably a good time to paint the inside.

Yeah!

Now I've done the inside of the mouth,

it's time to do the outside of the plant.

Ye-e-ah! There it is. It's all those greens.

You can see now how all that rough newspaper

comes through as really nice texture.

Right, I think that's all done.

Now, if you're doing this, you'll need to wait for these to dry now.

But I wait for nothing. I'm the Art Ninja.

Also, here, added a little bit of detail with some lighter paint.

Bringing out the texture.

A little touch around the edge of the jaw,

and some spots and dots on the underside of the jaw.

I've punched through some holes in the top and bottom of the jaw,

on each side, so I can slide in some split pins and give it a hinged jaw.

This guy's looking pretty good now,

but he could do with some foliage, so let's add some leaves.

Right, all his foliage is on.

It's time to pot him, and I've got here a little pot of rice.

And now you get your Venus flytrap...

..and get him in the pot.

Now, he's looking good, but I'd take sweets straight out of that mouth,

so he needs something to work as a deterrent

and I reckon some nice big teeth.

Oh, yeah. Nice sharp gnashers.

I've made these out of white paper.

And how about this?

Little tongue and added fly.

Looks good. Bet he's definitely worked up a hunger.

Put your sweets in.

You don't have to make a Venus fly trap to store your sweets.

How about some lovely colourful flowers?

-So, what have you got for me today?

-A pizza base.

I don't think I can do anything with an actual pizza base,

but maybe the bit of polystyrene that comes underneath it in the box.

I can do some art with that. I've got loads of those lying around.

Here we go. I've got my polystyrene pizza base.

Wow!

And I'm going to use it to make a print of a goldfish bowl.

So, I'm using a pencil to push the lines into the pizza base.

And these impressions won't be printed when I roll paint over it.

They'll come out as white lines.

I've drawn my fish, but now I'm drawing a couple of little reeds.

-OK, guys, do you want to see it so far?

-Yeah.

-Yes!

OK, here it is.

-Ooh!

-Fish.

-Fish!

In a fishbowl.

The nice circular thing makes it into a fishbowl.

-But now is the cool bit, yeah?

-The cool bit.

I've got with me some paint and a roller.

Put some blue paint into it.

You need quite a lot.

You'll have fun when you do this.

Right, here we go.

I'm just getting the roller all full of the paint.

Here we go.

I'll start rolling it on. I'm just rolling it round now, over the fish.

Just being a little bit careful here not to go over the edges too much.

Get it all over the top.

I'm doing it in the kitchen, as well,

so the surfaces are pretty easy to wipe clean.

Make sure you put something down on your surface

when you have a go, though. OK, guys, I've got it all nice

-and covered.

-We want to see.

-I want to see!

I'm not going to show you yet. I'm going to print it then show you.

Aww!

-Right.

-Printing, printing, printing!

Push it down. Make sure the paint comes off. Turn it over, as well.

I'm going to rub it on the back.

Just to make sure I've got all the shape and the whole picture.

-OK, guys, we're going to peel it off now.

-Drumroll, please!

Have to be quite quick, otherwise the paint dries to the paper.

Ah, yeah!
