Time to get my ninja on. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
And my clothes. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:08
Hiiyaa! | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
KA-CHING! | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
WOOSH! | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
WOOSH! | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
BOING! | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
An art ninja is particularly effective at night. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:28
OWL HOOTS | 0:00:28 | 0:00:29
It's still dark outside. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
Only the light of the moon. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
WOLF HOWLS | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
Which gives me an idea! | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
While I'm awake, I'm going to make a moon catcher, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
inspired by artist Andy Goldsworthy. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
First, I need to forage. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
Got some lovely leaves there that I've got from outside. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
Some beautiful greens, some yellows and even some reds and oranges. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
I'm going to need a tray. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
And some water. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
And a mug. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:58
-Hi, Ricky. -Who are you? | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
I'm Andy Goldsworthy, I weave natural materials into sculpture. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:08
My art has included flowers, leaves, mud, pine cones, snow and icicles. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:14
You do know you're meant to avoid yellow snow, right? | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
I do. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19 | |
But my work often changes colour as the natural materials I use decay | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
so I use photography to capture it. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
Well, bye then! | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
Andy was on a leaf, but now he's left. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
I'm going to start by putting my cup on my tray, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
and then pouring in some water. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
I want it to be about a centimetre deep. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
Now, my moon catcher is going to be frozen. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
There we go. So the mug | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
is making a hole so that when it's frozen, I can hang it up. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:48
I don't want to put it too close to the edge, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
otherwise the ice will be too weak and it will just break. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
Now, I'm going to freeze these leaves inside my moon catcher. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
So I'm going to start arranging them. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
I'm going to start with the nice dark greens, right at the beginning, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
and have them blend into lighter greens. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
It's easier to put the water in first | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
and then push the leaves down into it | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
because if you put all your leaves down | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
and then pour the water in, they kind of just float everywhere | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
and it might ruin your design. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
I'm fading through into the yellow leaves now. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
I've picked fallen leaves for my moon catcher, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
because it means I get a nice cross-section | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
of different colours and shapes and sizes. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
But you can use whatever you want. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
You can use grass, sticks, even acorns. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
I'm going to start fading it through now into the orange. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
That's a nice one. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
And finally, the red. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
And check the back of some of the leaves because they might have | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
more of a vivid colour on the back than they do on the front. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
There you go. I think that already looks beautiful, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
but it will look even better once it's frozen. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
So I'm going to pop it in the freezer. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
Hang on. I don't wait for water to freeze. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
I wait for no-one! I'm the art ninja. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
Hiiyaa! | 0:03:02 | 0:03:03
GONG! | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05 | |
Check that out. Beautiful. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
Now I need to get this cup out, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
and that will loosen with a little bit of warm water. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
There we go. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:17
And now carefully, need to get it out. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
Wow! Look at that! | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
That is beautiful. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28
I'm going to tie a bit of ribbon around it so I can hang it up. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:35
Now, the art doesn't stop there. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:36
Just like Andy Goldsworthy, it involves photography. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:40
I'm going to hang it up in the moonlight, | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
film it melting on my phone, | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
and play it in reverse as video art. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:52
ELECTRONIC MUSIC PLAYS | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
Awesome! That's amazing! | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
Maybe I can make my own version of a photogram picture. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
Don't worry, all will become clear. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:21
Let me just grab some interesting objects. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
Right. So I've got myself a watch, | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
some headphones, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
a pen, some keys, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
an old phone charger, | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
a banana and some cool shades. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
I'm going to get some nice coloured paper | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
and I'm going to draw around these items. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
Start with yellow. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
And I'm going to start by drawing around the banana, | 0:04:45 | 0:04:47
seeing as I've got the yellow out. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:48
Now, a photogram is a form of art made popular by | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
American artist Man Ray. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
Did somebody call my name? | 0:04:55 | 0:04:56
-Hey, Man! -Man Ray, to be precise. | 0:04:56 | 0:05:00
I beg your pardon, Ray. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
I'm actually appearing as a photogram, one of my favourite forms | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
of art. It's a photo made without a camera. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
I put objects onto photographic paper, | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
and then expose them to light. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:13
It makes a negative shadow. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
Now, would you mind disappearing into the shadows so I can have a go | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
at making my own version? | 0:05:18 | 0:05:19
It's becoming very transparent that I'm not needed here! | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
See you later, Man...Ray. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
So, Man Ray liked to call his photograms Rayographs | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
but I'm going to have a go at my very own Rickograph. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
I'm not going to be using photographic paper, though, | 0:05:35 | 0:05:37
so I'm going full colour. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
Cool, banana's done. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
I think I'm going to use this cable next. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
Now, remember, you can draw around whatever you like. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
That's cool. Move on to the green. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:49
The reason I'm using a mechanical pencil is because you can click the | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
lead out so that it's a long, thin piece and then use it to get in all | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
the nooks and crannies on smaller items like keys. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
Once I've drawn all around these objects, | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
I'm going to cut them out and make a picture | 0:06:09 | 0:06:10
that would cheer up even Man Ray. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
I'm going to start by cutting out the banana. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
There you go, nice banana cut-out. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:21
Now, you'll need to cut the rest out. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
But not me, because I'm a ninja. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:24
Hiiyaa! | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
There we are, good stuff. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:27
Let me grab myself a piece of black card, | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
because it will give the colours great contrast | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
and they'll really pop out. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:34
And now I'm going to arrange them into a | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
composition that I'm happy with. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:38
I want this pen pointing back into the centre. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
Now I'm going to stick them down. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
ELECTRONIC MUSIC PLAYS | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
This is looking good, but to finish it off, | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
I'm going to give it a nice frame. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
Awesome! My very own Rickograph! | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
Remember, when you do your photogram, | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
you can use any colour and draw around any objects you like! | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
Here's a quick art tip of how to add a shadow to your drawing. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:29
So I've got a drawing here, | 0:07:29 | 0:07:30
with a little wolf man wandering the streets. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:32
And the first thing you need to do is decide where the light's | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
coming from. So I think mine will come from the lower right here | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
so I can project the shadow onto the wall behind him. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
So, I can start doing a rough outline of the character again, | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
just back here. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:46
And I'm going to exaggerate his features a bit, | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
making them longer and thinner. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
It's also good if the shadow overlaps a little bit with your | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
character, going behind it. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:57
And the shadow does tend to get bigger | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
when it's projected away from your character. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:04
Now, I'm going to connect my shadow to my character. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
And now I can start filling it in. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
Just with a rough scribble. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:15
And the last little finishing touch is a little bit of shading on the | 0:08:20 | 0:08:24
back of the character, away from where the light's coming from. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:28
There you go! A quick art tip. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:31
-GROWL! GROWL! -Arrgh! | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
