Time to get my ninja on.

0:00:050:00:07

And my clothes.

0:00:070:00:08

Hiiyaa!

0:00:080:00:10

KA-CHING!

0:00:130:00:15

WOOSH!

0:00:150:00:17

WOOSH!

0:00:170:00:18

BOING!

0:00:190:00:21

An art ninja is particularly effective at night.

0:00:240:00:28

OWL HOOTS

0:00:280:00:29

It's still dark outside.

0:00:290:00:32

Only the light of the moon.

0:00:320:00:34

WOLF HOWLS

0:00:340:00:35

Which gives me an idea!

0:00:350:00:37

While I'm awake, I'm going to make a moon catcher,

0:00:370:00:39

inspired by artist Andy Goldsworthy.

0:00:390:00:42

First, I need to forage.

0:00:420:00:44

Got some lovely leaves there that I've got from outside.

0:00:460:00:48

Some beautiful greens, some yellows and even some reds and oranges.

0:00:480:00:52

I'm going to need a tray.

0:00:520:00:54

And some water.

0:00:540:00:55

And a mug.

0:00:570:00:58

-Hi, Ricky.

-Who are you?

0:01:000:01:03

I'm Andy Goldsworthy, I weave natural materials into sculpture.

0:01:030:01:08

My art has included flowers, leaves, mud, pine cones, snow and icicles.

0:01:080:01:14

You do know you're meant to avoid yellow snow, right?

0:01:140:01:17

I do.

0:01:170:01:19

But my work often changes colour as the natural materials I use decay

0:01:190:01:23

so I use photography to capture it.

0:01:230:01:27

Well, bye then!

0:01:270:01:28

Andy was on a leaf, but now he's left.

0:01:280:01:31

I'm going to start by putting my cup on my tray,

0:01:310:01:34

and then pouring in some water.

0:01:340:01:36

I want it to be about a centimetre deep.

0:01:360:01:39

Now, my moon catcher is going to be frozen.

0:01:390:01:41

There we go. So the mug

0:01:410:01:43

is making a hole so that when it's frozen, I can hang it up.

0:01:430:01:48

I don't want to put it too close to the edge,

0:01:480:01:50

otherwise the ice will be too weak and it will just break.

0:01:500:01:53

Now, I'm going to freeze these leaves inside my moon catcher.

0:01:530:01:56

So I'm going to start arranging them.

0:01:560:01:58

I'm going to start with the nice dark greens, right at the beginning,

0:01:580:02:02

and have them blend into lighter greens.

0:02:020:02:04

It's easier to put the water in first

0:02:040:02:05

and then push the leaves down into it

0:02:050:02:07

because if you put all your leaves down

0:02:070:02:09

and then pour the water in, they kind of just float everywhere

0:02:090:02:12

and it might ruin your design.

0:02:120:02:14

I'm fading through into the yellow leaves now.

0:02:140:02:17

I've picked fallen leaves for my moon catcher,

0:02:170:02:19

because it means I get a nice cross-section

0:02:190:02:21

of different colours and shapes and sizes.

0:02:210:02:23

But you can use whatever you want.

0:02:230:02:24

You can use grass, sticks, even acorns.

0:02:240:02:27

I'm going to start fading it through now into the orange.

0:02:270:02:30

That's a nice one.

0:02:320:02:33

And finally, the red.

0:02:350:02:37

And check the back of some of the leaves because they might have

0:02:370:02:40

more of a vivid colour on the back than they do on the front.

0:02:400:02:42

There you go. I think that already looks beautiful,

0:02:460:02:48

but it will look even better once it's frozen.

0:02:480:02:51

So I'm going to pop it in the freezer.

0:02:510:02:53

Hang on. I don't wait for water to freeze.

0:02:570:03:00

I wait for no-one! I'm the art ninja.

0:03:000:03:02

Hiiyaa!

0:03:020:03:03

GONG!

0:03:030:03:05

Check that out. Beautiful.

0:03:050:03:07

Now I need to get this cup out,

0:03:070:03:09

and that will loosen with a little bit of warm water.

0:03:090:03:12

There we go.

0:03:160:03:17

And now carefully, need to get it out.

0:03:170:03:20

Wow! Look at that!

0:03:240:03:27

That is beautiful.

0:03:270:03:28

I'm going to tie a bit of ribbon around it so I can hang it up.

0:03:300:03:35

Now, the art doesn't stop there.

0:03:350:03:36

Just like Andy Goldsworthy, it involves photography.

0:03:360:03:40

I'm going to hang it up in the moonlight,

0:03:460:03:48

film it melting on my phone,

0:03:480:03:50

and play it in reverse as video art.

0:03:500:03:52

ELECTRONIC MUSIC PLAYS

0:03:560:03:59

Awesome! That's amazing!

0:04:110:04:13

Maybe I can make my own version of a photogram picture.

0:04:160:04:20

Don't worry, all will become clear.

0:04:200:04:21

Let me just grab some interesting objects.

0:04:210:04:25

Right. So I've got myself a watch,

0:04:250:04:28

some headphones,

0:04:280:04:30

a pen, some keys,

0:04:300:04:32

an old phone charger,

0:04:320:04:34

a banana and some cool shades.

0:04:340:04:37

I'm going to get some nice coloured paper

0:04:390:04:41

and I'm going to draw around these items.

0:04:410:04:43

Start with yellow.

0:04:430:04:45

And I'm going to start by drawing around the banana,

0:04:450:04:47

seeing as I've got the yellow out.

0:04:470:04:48

Now, a photogram is a form of art made popular by

0:04:480:04:51

American artist Man Ray.

0:04:510:04:53

Did somebody call my name?

0:04:550:04:56

-Hey, Man!

-Man Ray, to be precise.

0:04:560:05:00

I beg your pardon, Ray.

0:05:000:05:02

I'm actually appearing as a photogram, one of my favourite forms

0:05:020:05:05

of art. It's a photo made without a camera.

0:05:050:05:09

I put objects onto photographic paper,

0:05:090:05:11

and then expose them to light.

0:05:110:05:13

It makes a negative shadow.

0:05:130:05:15

Now, would you mind disappearing into the shadows so I can have a go

0:05:150:05:18

at making my own version?

0:05:180:05:19

It's becoming very transparent that I'm not needed here!

0:05:190:05:23

See you later, Man...Ray.

0:05:230:05:26

So, Man Ray liked to call his photograms Rayographs

0:05:280:05:32

but I'm going to have a go at my very own Rickograph.

0:05:320:05:35

I'm not going to be using photographic paper, though,

0:05:350:05:37

so I'm going full colour.

0:05:370:05:39

Cool, banana's done.

0:05:390:05:41

I think I'm going to use this cable next.

0:05:410:05:43

Now, remember, you can draw around whatever you like.

0:05:450:05:48

That's cool. Move on to the green.

0:05:480:05:49

The reason I'm using a mechanical pencil is because you can click the

0:05:520:05:55

lead out so that it's a long, thin piece and then use it to get in all

0:05:550:05:58

the nooks and crannies on smaller items like keys.

0:05:580:06:01

Once I've drawn all around these objects,

0:06:070:06:09

I'm going to cut them out and make a picture

0:06:090:06:10

that would cheer up even Man Ray.

0:06:100:06:12

I'm going to start by cutting out the banana.

0:06:150:06:18

There you go, nice banana cut-out.

0:06:200:06:21

Now, you'll need to cut the rest out.

0:06:210:06:23

But not me, because I'm a ninja.

0:06:230:06:24

Hiiyaa!

0:06:240:06:26

There we are, good stuff.

0:06:260:06:27

Let me grab myself a piece of black card,

0:06:270:06:30

because it will give the colours great contrast

0:06:300:06:33

and they'll really pop out.

0:06:330:06:34

And now I'm going to arrange them into a

0:06:340:06:36

composition that I'm happy with.

0:06:360:06:38

I want this pen pointing back into the centre.

0:06:400:06:43

Now I'm going to stick them down.

0:06:430:06:45

ELECTRONIC MUSIC PLAYS

0:06:450:06:48

This is looking good, but to finish it off,

0:06:540:06:56

I'm going to give it a nice frame.

0:06:560:06:58

Awesome! My very own Rickograph!

0:06:590:07:02

Remember, when you do your photogram,

0:07:100:07:12

you can use any colour and draw around any objects you like!

0:07:120:07:15

Here's a quick art tip of how to add a shadow to your drawing.

0:07:250:07:29

So I've got a drawing here,

0:07:290:07:30

with a little wolf man wandering the streets.

0:07:300:07:32

And the first thing you need to do is decide where the light's

0:07:320:07:35

coming from. So I think mine will come from the lower right here

0:07:350:07:38

so I can project the shadow onto the wall behind him.

0:07:380:07:41

So, I can start doing a rough outline of the character again,

0:07:410:07:45

just back here.

0:07:450:07:46

And I'm going to exaggerate his features a bit,

0:07:460:07:49

making them longer and thinner.

0:07:490:07:51

It's also good if the shadow overlaps a little bit with your

0:07:530:07:56

character, going behind it.

0:07:560:07:57

And the shadow does tend to get bigger

0:07:590:08:02

when it's projected away from your character.

0:08:020:08:04

Now, I'm going to connect my shadow to my character.

0:08:040:08:07

And now I can start filling it in.

0:08:100:08:12

Just with a rough scribble.

0:08:130:08:15

And the last little finishing touch is a little bit of shading on the

0:08:200:08:24

back of the character, away from where the light's coming from.

0:08:240:08:28

There you go! A quick art tip.

0:08:290:08:31

-GROWL! GROWL!

-Arrgh!

0:08:390:08:41

-SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK!

-He-he-he!
