Time to get my ninja on. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:06
And my clothes! | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
I'm going to make something inspired by Catalan architect and artist | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
Antoni Gaudi. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
Seeing as I've got loads of shoeboxes lying around, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
I'm going to decorate one in the style of Gaudi and use it to keep | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
all my bits and bobs in. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
I'm going to need a bowl, cos I'm going to make some salt dough. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
And I'm still not baking a cake. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
And some mix. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
Now, the mix is half a cup of salt, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
a whole cup of plain flour | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
and half a cup of water. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
Now, you're probably wondering why I'm making this dough. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
Well, I'm going to decorate my box with a lizard | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
and create some mosaic tiles. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
SQUELCH | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
There you go. That's mixed in pretty well. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
Now I need to start shaping it. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
I'll just move these out of the way | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
cos I'm going to bring in a baking tray. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
I've popped some greaseproof paper on there. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
I'm going to take a third of my mix off. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
Now I'm going to roll this bit into a sausage shape. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
I want it fatter at one end, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
getting thinner towards the other. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
I'm just going to curl it to make a tail. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
All right, he's looking good. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
Now I'm going to make the tiles for my mosaic. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
I'm going to cut lines. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
Cut them in different sizes, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
just so you've got a variety in your mosaic. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
Right, they're all cut. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
I am going to lay them out on my baking tray. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
Now, I could leave these to dry for three days. But not me. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
I'm going to use my oven! | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
And I'm going to sound like a Bake Off judge when I say, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
"Ovens are hot, so be careful." | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
Put them in the oven at the lowest temperature for three hours | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
then leave to cool. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
Now I'm ready to paint. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
I'm going to paint the lizard bright and colourful. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
You could say a bit gaudy. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
-My name is Gaudi, not gaudy. -Hey, Gaudi. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
I didn't expect to see you time-travelling here. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
I put the "art" into architecture, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
adding in materials like ceramics, stained-glass and wrought iron work. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:42
Here's some of my work now. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
-I see you're recreating something similar now. -I am. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
But if you don't mind, could you shoo? Time is tight. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
I'm going to add some blue now and create a nice tribal pattern | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
along the back. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
Time to add some extra detail. First with orange... | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
..and then with green... | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
And finally, some eyes. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
Now I'm going to stick him to the top of my box. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
I'm just doing that with PVA glue. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
Now I'm going to take it up another notch with a mosaic. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
I could paint all these tiles, but not me. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
I'm going to use my ninja skills. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
Check it out. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
I'm using more PVA glue to stick the tiles to my box. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
The great thing is about PVA is that it disappears when it dries. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:44
First I'm doing red... | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
then dark orange... | 0:03:46 | 0:03:47
and finally, yellow. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
You need to leave a little gap between your tiles to make it look | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
like an authentic mosaic. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
Well, I'm going to continue that yellow around the sides. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
And the final tile. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:04
Wow. Look at that. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
Well, I might as well put some bits and bobs inside my box. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
I'm going to keep art supplies inside. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
There we go. Check that out. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
I think it will make a cool time capsule. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
-Hi, Ricky! -Oh, it's Lauren and Mark from The Dengineers. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
How about making something with... | 0:04:49 | 0:04:52
-..a broken broom! -Sorry, guys. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:54
Not this time. I've DEN something with that already. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:58
-Ricky, Ricky, Ricky! -Hey, what have these guys got? | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
-Ricky, can you make art with tinfoil? -OK. I choose you. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
Yay! | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08 | |
-What are your names? -Hi, I'm Niamh. -Hi, I'm Jack. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
-Nice to meet you, Niamh and Jack. And where are you from? -Belfast. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
All right. I'll just go and grab my things. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
OK, here we are. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
I've got my trusty tinfoil. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
What are you going to make, Ricky? | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
-I think I'm going to make an owl. And I'll show you how. -Cool. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
I'm going to start by covering my piece of cardboard in glue. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:30
-Do you guys like owls? -I like the way they can turn their head around. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:34
Hopefully this will help you make some head-turning art. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
Now I'm going to take the foil and I'm going to stick it over my piece | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
of cardboard, and I'm going to keep the shiny side up. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
There you go. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:48
Put a little bit of glue on the back, just to stick down the edges. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
OK, so I've got my reflective surface now. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
I'm going to use that to sketch the drawing of my owl onto. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
What I'm doing now is I'm pressing into the foil and the card | 0:06:01 | 0:06:03
with a pencil, kind of creating a relief picture. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:06
Just finishing the outline here. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
Now I'm going to glue string along the lines to add extra detail, | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
make it look really 3-D. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
I'm going to use a brush here, just because you get a finer line. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
So it's a little bit fiddly. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
I'm just going along and gluing string along the lines | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
I've drawn with a pencil. What would you call an owl if you had one? | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
I would probably call mine Sir Hoot-a-lot. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
Sir Hoots-a-lot? | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
Yeah, makes sense. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:36
The tootsies done. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
Finally, I'm going to put in Sir Hoots-a-lot's beak. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:43
I'd like to point out that | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
Sir Hoots-a-lot's first name is Sandra. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
So we need to cover this picture again in another layer of foil. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
Now, I can wait for it to dry, or I could use some ninja skills. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
-What do you reckon? -Use the ninja skills. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
Ninja skills it is. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
Ninja skills. Now it's ready for another layer of foil. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
So I'm just going to start pasting on the PVA glue again. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
Now I can put over my second layer of foil. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
Using my fingers, I'm just going to push the foil into all of the gaps. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:17
As I'm pushing down on the string, | 0:07:17 | 0:07:18
the picture's starting to appear through the foil. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
Now, to get into the tighter nooks and crannies, | 0:07:21 | 0:07:23
I'm going to use a cotton bud. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
The reason I've done two layers is so that if I accidentally tear | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
this layer of foil, it still looks good underneath. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
Right, I've pushed in all the gaps that I can now. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
I'm going to add little bit more detail with a pencil. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:37
I think I'm going to give him some nice feathers on his belly. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
Now I've got two layers of foil on here, | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
this pencil's leaving really nice lines. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
I'm going to put a little bit of detail on the face now. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
There we are. I think it's ready for a final finishing touch. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
I've got some black boot polish here. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
With a piece of tissue I'm going to rub it all into the gaps | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
in the grooves that I've made. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
So the boot polish is accentuating all of the detail that I've made, | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
and in some of the areas where the foil is ripped and you can | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
get through to the string, it's really thick and black | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
and it gives it a nice bit of contrast across the picture. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
Right, I think that's it. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
-Are you guys ready to see it? -Yep. -Yes. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
-What you think of this? -It's amazing, Ricky. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:24
-What would you give it out of 10? BOTH: -It's a 10! | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
I'll accept that score. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
I think it's so good, it deserves the frame. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:33
There we are. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:35
Thanks for your suggestion, guys. You've been brilliant. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
-Bye! -Bye! | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
