Episode 16 Nine Minute Ninja

Time to get my ninja on.

And my clothes.

An art ninja has a mastery of time.

The art ninja cake clock.

So, I'm going to start with a big sheet of card.

I'm going to draw a circle on it using two pencils and some string.

Poke a hole, like that, and then just draw around, like that.

This is a great trick for drawing a circle.

I'm just going to cut that out.

There we go.

I'm going to need two of those,

-so I'll just ninja another one.

-Hi-yah!

I've cut the centre out of this one

so I can put the clock mechanism in later.

I've got a long strip of card here.

I've made it about 5cm wide and that's just going to decide

the height of my cake.

Another trick here to help you stick the strip

around the circle is to pre-stick some masking tape

on the underside of it, with a bit of it overlapping.

This means you can roll round the card and, as you go around,

just fold over the masking tape, stick it in place.

Now, to put the top bit on,

you can do a similar thing, but round the top.

Last little bit there.

That is the main structure of the cake done,

but it needs to look like a cake, so I'm going to add some sponge.

So I'm going to cut my sponge into strips with some ninja skills.

Hi-yah!

There we go. Now I'm going to stick these sponges

around the side in two layers with some double-sided sticky tape.

Just start placing them on.

I'm going to use a bit of extra double-sided sticky tape

between the ends of the sponge

to make sure they stick together nicely.

Then turn your cake over and repeat this process for the second layer.

Now, I don't know about you, but I like my cake

with a little bit of jam filling and, for that, I'm using some wool.

So I've chopped up some bits of wool, and to make sure it stays

on the inside, I'm just going to do a line of PVA

between the two pieces of sponge for the wool to stick to.

There we go. Start stuffing that jam in.

Now, I don't know about you, but I'd like some icing,

so I've got some pink and some white paint here,

and I'm going to mix in with it some PVA glue to make it nice and sticky,

and the PVA also means it dries kind of shiny, just like icing.

I'm painting right up to the edges

and I'm letting little bits dribble over so it looks like icing.

Now I'm going to add some nice white swirls.

So I've got some slightly thinner paint that I've mixed with PVA.

I'm going to dribble that on the top in a swirly pattern.

All right, that's enough.

Now I'm going to add some sprinkles

and I'm using some coloured elastic bands.

I'm going to chop these up with scissors,

just to get them nice and small.

There we go. Now I'm going to add some cream.

And I'm going to do that by soaking some cotton wool in PVA glue

and shaping them into dollops.

Now, these lumps of cotton wool

are going to be the markers for my hours.

This first one here is going to be 12 o'clock.

This one's going to be six o'clock.

Nine o'clock. Three o'clock.

And I'm going to fill in the other hours in between,

equal distances apart.

So I've done my main hour markers,

but now I need the minutes and for that

I've used a similar technique as making the dollops of cream,

but this time I've mixed the cotton wool and PVA glue with some paint

to make these lovely coloured balls of icing.

Just counting down the final minutes.

It's looking great, but I need to wait for it to dry

before I put the mechanism in. No, I won't, cos I'm a ninja!

Hi-yah!

Here we go.

Now I need to add the mechanism.

You can buy these from all good craft shops

or you can buy them online pretty cheap.

So, I'm going to attach this to the back of my clock.

I'm going to poke it through the hole

that I made right at the beginning.

I've cut out a spoon and a fork to be my hour and my minute hand,

just out of some silver card.

I've got double-sided sticky tape on the back

and I'm going to push them onto the mechanism.

That's the hour hand.

Minute hand.

And then the last little bit to hold them in place.

There we go. It looks amazing.

My clock is finished, and it was a piece of cake.

Time to hang it on the wall.

Now, I've made mine to Mum's special recipe,

but you can try some other ideas.

How about one with some nice patterned icing?

Or...a lovely chocolate gateau?

No, it's just an animation,

so let's shed some light on.

If you don't want to be left in the dark,

you will need a light or some big torches,

a sheet and somewhere to hang it,

some friends and a tablet with an animation app included.

And you can put it together in just three ninja moves.

Ninja move number one.

So, you need to hang your sheet up and back-light it,

then set up your tablet app, ready to shoot.

Now, this animation works better when the lights are off,

even better at night-time. Ninja move number two.

The next thing you need to do is work with your group of mates

to come up with some awesome animation ideas.

Think about how you can work as a team,

maybe do something that's completely inhuman,

and look around and find some cool props.

Ninja move number three.

It's time to start shooting.

Now, we're going to do a really cool trick here

that makes it look like Andre is duplicating.

Because we're shooting onto a sheet, and there's no depth,

we can hide people behind him and have them step out

at the right time. It's like he's copying himself.

Right, let's get on with it.

For each move, take a shot using the animation app on your tablet

and then move the scene along by one small step, and take another shot.

OK. I've sliced and diced the animation.

Hey, guys, I think it's time to take a look at our new masterpiece.

Here we go.

Now you can make a disguise with a straw mouth.

HE SLURPS

Ahh! Tasty!

And here's how you make it.

You'll need a piece of card...and a pen.

Draw yourself a funny mouth.

Colour in the inside of your mouth.

Not that one!

Now add some more colour.

Red.

I'm good at colouring inside the lines.

DIS GUY's annoying.

The DISGUISE is cool, though.

Now cut it out with scissors.

With a pencil and modelling clay,

pierce a hole big enough for a straw.

Now take a straw and poke it through the hole,

with the mouth facing away from you.

You could try many different disguises.

Vampire disguise.

Grr!
