Time to get my ninja on. Got my clothes. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
BIRDS TWEETING | 0:00:19 | 0:00:20
Atchoo! | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
The thing about being an art ninja is you're always moving. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
They're doing drum practice next door. It's really annoying. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
Oh. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35 | |
But it's making me move. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
Oh, I can't control it. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
It's triggered something inside of me. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
Yeah! Oh, now I'm dad dancing! | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
That's not dad dancing. This is dad dancing. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
Oh, he's so embarrassing! | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
-Hey. -Hi. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
Wahey. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
Cool dance moves. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
What's that? | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
I've heard of dancing on the ceiling but that's ridiculous. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
To make this laid-back animation, you'll need... | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
a tablet or smartphone with animation app... | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
some interesting terrain... | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
and a friend! I'm cheating a little here. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
This is my friend Claire and she's a contemporary dancer. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
And you can put it together in just three ninja moves. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
Ninja move number one. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
It's time to look at our world a little differently | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
cos we aren't going to be animating on our usual plane. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
Look for interesting areas on the ground. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
Things that don't seem exciting from this perspective | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
might be great to animate on. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
And remember, you don't need to worry about gravity, cos | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
your character can jump really high, or even fly, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
cos they're not really in the air. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
Ninja move number two. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:06
Now you've got interesting places to animate, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
it's time to start thinking about your choreography. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
Work with your animation model to work out what you can do. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
This is where my model really comes into her own. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
Ninja move number three... | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
It's time to start shooting. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:28
So what I've done is I've attached my smartphone with animation app | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
to this fun little rig here. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
Now, if you don't have fancy rigs like me, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
you can simply use a selfie stick. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
-OK. We've danced around the park... -Mm-hmm. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
..we've shot all our frames | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
and I've added some cool sound effects. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
So, I think it's time to take a look at our mini masterpiece. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
I think you've got some ninja dance moves. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
Here's a quick art tip of how to drop a character jumping. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
Got a diving board in place already. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
He's going to be springing off of that. I'll start with his head. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
Needs to be lent back a little bit cos he's jumping through the air. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
Eyes looking forward. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
Needs to be pretty pleased with himself. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
That's not important for jumping, but I like him to be happy. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
His hair's going to be blown back. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
Cos he's jumping through the wind. Now his body. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
I'm going to put his arms up diagonally, | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
coming out from his shoulders. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:05
He's throwing his weight up in the air. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
And some shorts. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
And I want his front foot facing up, and his back foot facing down. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:21
He's just sprung away from it. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
Put a couple of wobble lines around him, to show the action, | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
and then some speed lines coming away from his back, showing | 0:04:27 | 0:04:31
the direction that he's jumping in. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:32
There we go. Quick art tip. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
Come on. Jump to it, and have a go yourself. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
The art ninja zoetrope. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
Every film or TV show you've ever watched | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
is made up of individual pictures speeding by in quick succession. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
A zoetrope is just an early version of that. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
So, take your paper plate. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
Now, I've painted mine black. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:09
And, with a bit of modelling clay to protect the table, | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
poke a hole through the centre with a pencil. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
With a pair of scissors, just cut a simple little X. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
Now, that's going to work as a cradle for a marble. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
It's going to help the zoetrope spin. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:24
And I'm going to hold that in place with some sticky tape. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
Cool. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:31 | |
Now, take a long sheet of black card, | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
long enough to fit around the outside of your plate. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
Now, I'm going to cut 12 slot into it, equal distances apart. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
And I'm going to mark out where I'm going to make the cuts. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
I think they're going to be eight centimetres deep, | 0:05:41 | 0:05:44
and they're going to be about five millimetres in width. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:47
With some scissors, carefully cut those slots out. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
Now go back along and just cut-off all the waste bits you left behind. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
Now these slots are going to be what I watch the animation through. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:21
They're little viewfinders. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:22
Now I just stick that round the outside of the paper plate | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
with a little bit of double sided sticky tape. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:27
You can use glue or normal sticky tape. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
Just run that among the bottom. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
And I'm going to put a little bit on the edge here as well, | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
to stick it together where it overlaps. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
Just going to prepare my plate by rolling over the sides, | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
so I've got a nice surface to stick the double-sided sticky tape to. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
Right, peel off the backing of my double-sided sticky tape. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:50
Just going to roll the plate along and anywhere where it needs a | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
little more stick, I'm going to use some sticky tape to hold it down. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
Just where it overlaps. There you go. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
So, the zoetrope is a bit like a drum, | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
and when you place a sequence of photographs or images on the inside | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
and spin it, they animate in smooth motion. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
So I need to draw my sequence of images. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
I'm going to grab a long piece of white card with a little bit | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
of overlap so it fits nicely on the inside of the drum. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
Right. So now I need to draw my 12 pictures. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
Equal distances apart, | 0:07:25 | 0:07:26
so they line-up with the slots on the zoetrope. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
I'm going to drop someone dancing! | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
As you can see, I draw my figure in a different position each time | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
so it animates nicely. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
But so it flows, I need to return it to the starting position. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
The word "zoetrope" derives from the Greek word meaning | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
"life turning". | 0:07:48 | 0:07:49
There we are. My last frame is nearly at my starting position. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
That should animate well. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
So I've got my 12 pictures, and my 12 slots on the zoetrope. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:59
And I'm going to pop them in and make them dance. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
Now, give it a spin | 0:08:05 | 0:08:06
and watch that tiny dancer spin across the dance floor. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
MUSIC: Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer) by Ironik ft Chipmunk and Elton John | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
It's better than my dancing. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
But not nearly as good as Dad's! | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
You don't have to do a dancer. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
You can make your figure do whatever you like. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
This one's jumping! | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
Or a dog going for walkies. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
Now go to the website | 0:08:38 | 0:08:39
and get your ninja on. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
Art ninja! | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46 |
