TOOT! | 0:01:10 | 0:01:11 | |
Ha-ha-ha. Oh, it's a twinkly, sunshiny sort of day today, Salty. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:20
Oh, I've been using this old telescope to look at the sea. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:26
You can see all sorts of twinkles out there today, Salty. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:31
Oh, beautiful. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
Ha-ha! Lovely. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
Ah, you like the waves on the sea | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
when they twinkle, don't you, Salty? | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
Oh, I remember a story about the twinkles on the sea. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:50
It all happened when I was a boy | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
in a twinkly time...long, long ago. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
Ha-ha! I used to run down to the beach as often as I could, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:05
meeting up with my best friends, Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:10
One day, we were all standing at the water's edge with my old telescope. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:23
Of course, it was new back then. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
And we were taking it in turns to look at the waves on the sea. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
-What do you think makes the waves twinkle? -That's easy. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
It's the sunlight on the waves that makes them twinkle. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
But Ernie thought about this and then he said, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
"Ah, but what makes them twinkle at night?" | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
That's easy. At night it's the light from the moon. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
Then Sue took the telescope | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
and had a look through it at the rockpools. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
Look, even the rockpools are twinkling in the sunlight. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
And with that, we raced across the beach to look at the light | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
on the rockpools. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:01
And as we gazed deep down into the glittery waters, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
a magical world appeared before our eyes. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
Swimming in the rockpool, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
Belinda the Blenny saw a little flash of light. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
It flitted around and disappeared - shwoop - behind a shell. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:23
She went to investigate and, as she did so, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
it popped out again and flitted off. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
Belinda thought the little flash of light wanted to play, | 0:03:30 | 0:03:35
so she dashed after it. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
She chased it through the slippery seaweed, | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
past the coloured pebbles and up to the surface of the sunny rockpool. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:46
And there, it settled on a rock. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
Belinda swam over to have a closer look. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
She wanted to know what this little flash of light was. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:58
"That is a twinkle," said a low voice. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
It was Reginald the Great Wise Limpet. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
"Hello, little twinkle," said Belinda quietly. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:11
As she spoke, the little twinkle's light started to fade, | 0:04:11 | 0:04:17
then got brighter, and then faded again, as if it was tired. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
There was a cloud passing over the sun, and when the sun disappears, | 0:04:21 | 0:04:27
twinkles start to disappear, too. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
Luckily, the cloud moved on | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
and the sun shone and the twinkle twinkled brightly again. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:37
Belinda smiled. "I think it likes me," she said. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:43
"Oh, I'm sure it does," said Reginald. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
"Twinkles are very friendly." | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
"Where do twinkles come from?" asked Belinda. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:54
Reginald came up with an answer. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
Now, I'm not sure, Salty, that he actually knew, | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
but, nevertheless, Reginald answered Belinda's question. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:05
"A twinkle factory. That's where they come from," | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
Reginald said with confidence. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
"The twinkles are made in a twinkle factory far, far out at sea. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:19
"They pop up into the air, out of the factory's chimneys. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:24
"When they fall back down again, they are scattered all over the sea. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:29
"In fact, twinkles seem to get everywhere." | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
Well, Belinda thought that the twinkle factory sounded magical. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:39
She looked over at the twinkle. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
"I wonder if it wants to play chase again," she thought. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
So, she wriggled over to the rock where the twinkle sat, | 0:05:47 | 0:05:51
but, as she got close up to it - shwoop - it was off again. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:56
It flickered across the watery surface of the rockpool, | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
then it dived down and disappeared | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
under the water. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
"Hey-hey, little twinkle," laughed Belinda. "Come back!" | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
And she dashed after it, down into the rockpool. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:13
Whoosh! | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
Belinda whooshed past, leaving a trail of bubbles behind her, | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
and then - whoosh - Belinda whooshed past | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
in the opposite direction, | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
leaving another trail of bubbles behind her. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
"What was that?" laughed Andrew the Anemone. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
"That was Belinda," said Sally the Starfish. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
"Let's go and find out what she's doing." | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
Oh, so they both went off to find out. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
And they found Belinda hiding behind a rock. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
"Hi, Belinda," they said. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
"Shush!" said Belinda. "I don't want to scare it away." | 0:06:46 | 0:06:51
"Scare what away?" asked Andrew. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
"That twinkle," said Belinda quietly. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:58
Well, Sally and Andrew looked, and, sure enough, | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
there was a little twinkle sitting on an upturned seashell. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:07
"We've been playing chase," said Belinda, | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
"but I haven't managed to catch it yet." | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
Sally saw the twinkle darting up the side of the rockpool. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:17
"There it goes!" she said. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
And the three friends chased the twinkle. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
It whizzed here and there and up and down and round and about | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
but they couldn't catch that twinkle, | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
no matter how hard they tried. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
"This is a brilliant game!" laughed Andrew, as they spun around. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
And then - bop, bop, bop - | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
they all popped their heads out of the surface of the rockpool. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:44
The little twinkle was sat on Reginald's head. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:49
"Don't move!" called Belinda. "It's on your head!" | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
As Reginald looked up at the twinkle, | 0:07:52 | 0:07:56
a cloud rolled over the sun | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
and the little twinkle faded, faded... | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
..and then disappeared. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
Andrew, Sally and Belinda swam over. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
"The twinkle's gone," said Belinda | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
in a little voice. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:15
And she was right. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
It had. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:18
Andrew and Sally looked sad. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
They'd enjoyed their game with the little twinkle. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:25
Reginald looked at the three friends and smiled. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:29
"I expect the twinkle factory will make another twinkle | 0:08:29 | 0:08:34
"for you to chase," he said. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
And at that moment, do you know what happened? | 0:08:36 | 0:08:40
The cloud moved away, | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
leaving the sun in a clear blue sky shining down on the rockpool. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:49
"There," said Reginald. "Now look behind you." | 0:08:50 | 0:08:56
The three friends turned. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:00
And dancing on the surface of the rockpool | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
were hundreds and hundreds of twinkles | 0:09:03 | 0:09:07
all wanting to be chased. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:10
Sally and Andrew whooped with delight | 0:09:10 | 0:09:13
and they rushed off to continue their game. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
Belinda stayed beside Reginald for a moment. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
"Thank you, Reginald," she said. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
"This has been the best day ever. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
"Will you say thank you to the twinkle factory?" | 0:09:26 | 0:09:29
"Of course I will," smiled Reginald. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
And then Belinda dashed off to join the others. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
We looked up from the rockpool. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
Sue put her fingers in the water | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
and twinkles skipped across the surface. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:46
You know what? | 0:09:46 | 0:09:47
Sue loved the idea of the twinkle factory. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
I lent her my telescope and she gazed out at the distant sea. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:56
I think one of those twinkles out there is our rockpool's twinkle. | 0:09:56 | 0:10:01
Ernie and I smiled. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:02
She was probably right. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:05
"You know what else that telescope is good for?" I said. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
-Playing pirates! -"Playing pirates!" said Ernie. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
You can't catch me! | 0:10:13 | 0:10:15
-Arr, me hearties! -Land ahoy! | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
And we played pirates on the beach... | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
Arr, I'll be lookout! | 0:10:20 | 0:10:22
..until the tide started to come in and cover the rockpool | 0:10:22 | 0:10:26
like a great seaweedy blanket. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29
Well, what do YOU think? | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
Do the twinkles on the sea come from a twinkle factory? | 0:10:38 | 0:10:43
Maybe. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:45
Who knows? | 0:10:45 | 0:10:46
SALTY BARKS | 0:10:48 | 0:10:50
So, why don't you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time? | 0:10:51 | 0:10:58
Goodbye. | 0:10:58 | 0:10:59 |
