Now, then. Now, what's that, eh? | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
Eh? What is it? It's a feather. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
It's my feather and it must have fallen down from the shelf. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:22
It's an unusual colour, that, isn't it? | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
Don't you think? | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
Now, if I remember rightly, this feather came from a parrot | 0:01:27 | 0:01:32
and parrots normally live in the jungle, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
but this one lived right here in Staithes. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
Yeah, that reminds me of a story. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
Are you going to listen, as well? Good girl. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
It all happened when I was a boy | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
in a twinkly time, long, long ago. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
Ha-ha! I used to run down to the beach | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
as often as I could, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
meeting up with my best friends, Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:03
We were all digging in the sand one day, making sand castles, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
when out of the sky, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
something landed on my shoulder. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
What's this? | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
It's a pretty feather. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
Little Sailor Sue had a look at it | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
and it didn't look like a seagull feather. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
Just then, we heard a squawk above our heads | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
and when we looked up, what did we see? | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
Yes, that's right, it was a parrot | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
and it was flying above us. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
I think it's a feather from a pirate's parrot! | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
Quick, follow it! | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
We followed the parrot as it flew towards the rockpool, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
and, with a squawk, it disappeared over the clifftop. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
Sue said, "It'll come back soon." | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
So we waited by the rockpool, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
and as we gazed deep down into the glittery waters, | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
a magical world appeared before our eyes. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
One morning, Sally the Starfish and Andrew the Anemone | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
were playing together. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
They were looking for surprises | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
washed into the rockpool by the tide. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
"What's that?" asked Sally, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
and up ahead, they saw something big and dark. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
"I think it's some sort of a box," said Andrew. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
And it was indeed a great wooden box with brass handles | 0:03:29 | 0:03:34
and written on the side were the words, | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
"Property of Captain Kitty, the pirate." | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
"Isn't Captain Kitty | 0:03:41 | 0:03:42
"the naughtiest pirate on the seven seas?" Sally whispered. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:48
"Oh, a pirate's chest," said Andrew, | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
"there'll be treasure inside." | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
"Well, it's here now, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:56
"we might as well open it," said Andrew. | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
Sally wasn't sure. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
"You can't go around opening other people's property, can you?" | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
Just then, they heard a squeak. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:10
They looked at each other in surprise. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
And then another squeeaak. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:15
It was coming from the treasure chest. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
Now, dogs are very interested in squeaks, | 0:04:18 | 0:04:22
and Salty's golden rule is | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
if you hear a squeak, you should investigate it | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
because you never know who or what is doing the squeaking. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
Isn't that right, girl? WOOF! | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
Yes, so Sally and Andrew agreed they should investigate. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:41
With a huge push, | 0:04:41 | 0:04:42
the lid of the treasure chest slowly started to open | 0:04:42 | 0:04:47
and the squeaks got squeakier... | 0:04:47 | 0:04:50
SQUEAK! | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
..until a large yellow shape pushed its way out of the treasure chest. | 0:04:53 | 0:05:00
It was round, floaty, | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
and had a long string attached to it. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
"Ha! It's a balloon!" laughs Sally. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
"This treasure chest must be full of balloons. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
"That's what all the squeaking is." | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
"Well, close it quickly or they'll escape," said Andrew. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
The two little friends looked at each other. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
Uh-oh, they didn't want to be blamed | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
for opening Captain Kitty's treasure chest | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
and losing all her balloons. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:29
Oh, no. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:30
Sally sat down hard on the lid, | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
and the chest closed with a squeaky, bubbly thlump. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:37
"There," she said, proudly, | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
"the balloons are all safe." | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
"All except one. The yellow balloon is getting away!" Andrew shouted. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
"You hold the lid down, I'll rescue the balloon," | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
and he raced off. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:51
Well, by now, the yellow balloon had floated up into the sky, | 0:05:51 | 0:05:55
and down below, Andrew grabbed the balloon's floaty string | 0:05:55 | 0:06:00
and tried to pull it back. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
Oh! But a gust of seaside wind caught the yellow balloon | 0:06:02 | 0:06:08
and wafted it up, up and away. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
Clinging tightly to the string, | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
Andrew was pulled out of the rockpool with a splash. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:20
"Whee-hee!" | 0:06:20 | 0:06:21
Andrew was flying higher and higher into the sky | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
on the end of the yellow balloon. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
"Ha-ha, ha-ha, ha-ha. Ooh, not again!" he laughed. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
Andrew loves flying adventures, doesn't he, Salty? Oh, yeah. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:37
Anyway, he looked down at the rockpool | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
getting smaller and smaller and further and further away. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:45
And then he saw a ship. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
It was the Hurly Burly, | 0:06:48 | 0:06:49
Captain Kitty's pirate ship, | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
and there she was, pacing up and down on the deck | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
and she looked pretty cross. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
"Hello, Andrew. What are you doing up here?" | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
said a voice. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
Flapping along beside him was Brenda the Stork. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:08
"Hello, Brenda," said Andrew, | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
"I was trying to rescue one of Captain Kitty's balloons | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
"that floated away." | 0:07:14 | 0:07:15
"Captain Kitty will want it back," said Brenda. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:19
"It's her birthday today and she's having a party. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
"She's blown up all her party balloons | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
"and put them in her treasure chest." | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
Well, that solved the mystery, didn't it, Salty? | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
WOOF! | 0:07:30 | 0:07:31 | |
The treasure chest full of balloons | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
must have fallen off Captain Kitty's pirate ship | 0:07:33 | 0:07:37
and washed up in the rockpool. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
"Brenda," said Andrew, "you're great at delivering things. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:45
"Could you drop me off at the rockpool | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
"and then deliver this balloon to Captain Kitty?" | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
So Brenda took the balloon string in her beak | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
and guided it back to the rockpool | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
until she was low enough for Andrew to jump off. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:01
"Wee-hee!" | 0:08:01 | 0:08:03
And then she flapped away to deliver the balloon to Captain Kitty. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:09
Andrew floated down to Sally, | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
who was still sitting on the treasure chest, | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
keeping it closed. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
"Open the treasure chest," called Andrew. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
"What? What?" Sally looked a little confused, | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
but Andrew seemed to know what he was doing, | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
so she jumped off, | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
and the lid of the treasure chest yawned open. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:31
The balloons inside all squeaked and jostled to get out. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:37
"Way-ah-woo-hee-woo-ha!" | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
Then they floated up and up and up through the water, | 0:08:41 | 0:08:46
out of the rockpool, into the sky. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
Then Brenda caught them one by one in her beak | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
and carried the whole bunch over to Captain Kitty. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:56
Now she could have her birthday party, | 0:08:56 | 0:09:00
and later, the sea would wash into the rockpool again | 0:09:00 | 0:09:05
and carry the treasure chest back to its owner. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
Sally and Andrew giggled, | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
watching the balloons bobbing and squeaking | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
from the tall masts of the pirate ship. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
Captain Kitty and her parrot cheered and squawked happily | 0:09:19 | 0:09:24
and just then, we all heard a squawk above us. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
The parrot's back. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
Come on, follow it! | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
It soared over the beach and landed far away outside the sweet shop. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:38
Oh, dear! It was Polly, the sweet shop lady's pet parrot! | 0:09:38 | 0:09:44
They said that she used to feed Polly | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
Yorkshire pudding and gravy on Sundays. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
So, if ever we had a bit of money to spend, as a special treat, | 0:09:51 | 0:09:56
we would visit the sweet shop... | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
-Hello, Polly. -Hello, Polly. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
All right, Polly. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
Come on, let's go! | 0:10:02 | 0:10:04
..and then we'd dash back on to the beach... | 0:10:06 | 0:10:09
I love Sherbet Lemons. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:11
..and share our sweets until the tide came in | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
and covered the rockpool, | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
like a great seaweedy blanket. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
Polly's not here in Staithes any more, | 0:10:25 | 0:10:29
but there is a sweet shop, and I still have my feather. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:35
Lovely, isn't it? Ha-ha! | 0:10:35 | 0:10:37
Maybe one day, another parrot will come to stay here. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:42
SQUAWK! | 0:10:42 | 0:10:43
Oh, listen. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:44
SQUAWK! | 0:10:46 | 0:10:47
I was right. It's a parrot. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
So why don't you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time? | 0:10:49 | 0:10:56
Goodbye. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:57
SQUAWKS: Goodbye! Goodbye! | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
Ha-ha-ha-ha! | 0:11:00 | 0:11:01 |
