TOOT! | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12 | |
Oh, hello. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
I was just going to give Salty one of her biscuit bones. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:20
Ready? Hey, come on. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
Here. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25 | |
There you are. Look at that. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
Yes, Salty, you're the best biscuit-biter on this boat. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:32
You know, I was Jack, the Cloud-Catcher once. Yeah. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:37
Would you like to know how I got that name? | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
Right, I'll tell you the story. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
It all happened when I was a boy in a twinkly time long, long ago. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:50
I used to run down to the beach as often as I could | 0:01:52 | 0:01:57
meeting up with my best friends, Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:02
One special day a circus came to Staithes | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
and we got candyfloss as a treat. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
When the show was over we ran to the beach talking about all the | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
magical things we'd seen. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
I really liked the juggling. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
Sue was wearing a fluffy headband | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
and she played balancing on the rocks. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
I'm Soaring Sue, the tightrope walker. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
"And you are Twirly Ernie, the best cup-spinner in Staithes!" | 0:02:35 | 0:02:40
But I couldn't think of a circus name for myself, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
so I made my way over to our favourite rock pool. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:51
Sue and Ernie came, too and, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
as we settled down and gazed deep into the glittery waters, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:57
a magical world appeared before our eyes. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:02
The rock pool looked more magical than usual on this particular day | 0:03:07 | 0:03:12
because every year the rock pool creatures put on a show... | 0:03:12 | 0:03:17
SALTY WOOFS | 0:03:17 | 0:03:18
Yes, Salty, I know you like a show. So do I. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
And every year they had the same audience - | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
a very enthusiastic family of visiting pipefish. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:32
"Hello, folks, here we are again" | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
said the longest pipefish excitedly. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
The pipefish curled their tails around the seaweed | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
so they wouldn't float off and they piped with excitement, | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
"Ooh, aah, ee, we can't wait to see the show!" | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
Bertram, the butterfish, whizzed up to greet them. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
Now he was dressed up as Bertram Butteroli, the showman, | 0:03:54 | 0:04:00
in a sparkly top hat and a matching bow tie. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
"Is the show going to start soon?" asked the smallest pipefish. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:08
They piped with excitement - | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
"Pi-pi-pi! Pa-pa-pa! Pi-pi-pi! Pi-pi-po! Pi-pi-pi-pi!" | 0:04:10 | 0:04:15
"I hope it's even better than last year" said a very stripy pipefish, | 0:04:15 | 0:04:20
bobbing up and down eagerly. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
And suddenly, Bertram announced, | 0:04:22 | 0:04:26
"Lady pipefish and gentlemen pipefish, | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
"little pipefish and stripy pipefish, | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
"please give your loudest cheer | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
"for Sally, the ju-u-uggling starfish!" | 0:04:35 | 0:04:40
Sally cartwheeled into the centre of the sandy floor | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
juggling some of her favourite shells and, as the music got faster, | 0:04:45 | 0:04:50
so did Sally's juggling. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
"Wiggly-jiggly, I wish I could do that!" said the littlest pipefish. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:58
"We like your juggling, Sally. It's brilliant" | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
said the longest pipefish. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
"And it was brilliant the last time you did it, too." | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
"But can you do anything new?" the stripy pipefish piped up. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:10
Well, it just so happened that Sally did have a new juggling trick | 0:05:10 | 0:05:17
which she'd been practising. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
The musical rock played a drum roll | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
as Sally started juggling her shells again. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
Then, one by one, she tossed each shell aside so that they made | 0:05:26 | 0:05:32
a magnificent wibbly-wobbly shell tower. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:37
The pipefish cheered, Sally bowed | 0:05:37 | 0:05:41
and then cartwheeled off. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
"Next it is Sheena, The Fearless. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
"This little shrimp can trapeze with ease" cried Bertram, | 0:05:47 | 0:05:53
as Sheena swung out doing a somersault | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
and catching the trapeze again just in time. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
The pipefish cheered. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
"And now for my latest trick. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
"You won't have seen this one before!" | 0:06:04 | 0:06:06
Sheena told the pipefish. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09
Then Sheena twisted herself upwards | 0:06:09 | 0:06:13
in a long frond of trailing seaweed. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
Higher and higher she went. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
Then suddenly she dropped swiftly like a stone. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:24
The pipefish gasped. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
Then, boi-oi-oing! | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
The seaweed stopped just short of the rock pool floor. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:33
Blump! | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
The pipefish were ecstatic! | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
"And last, but not least, it is Andrew, | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
"the amazingly aerodynamic acrobat!" cried Bertram. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
Andrew the anemone appeared and leapt onto his seaweed trampoline. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:55
He started showing off his somersaults and his twists | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
and he jumped so high that he jumped right out of the rock pool, | 0:06:59 | 0:07:05
did a special spaghetti twist and then splashed right back down again. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:10
"Ah, jiggly-wiggly!" cried the littlest pipefish. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
"Your spaghetti twist is just as good as the last time you did it. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:18
"But can you do any new tricks?" asked the stripy pipefish. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:23
SALTY WHIMPERS | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
Yes, I know, Salty, there is no pleasing some people, is there? | 0:07:25 | 0:07:29
And there's no pleasing some pipefish either. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
Andrew hadn't practised any new tricks, but he didn't seem to mind. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:38
"I can do anything," he boasted to the pipefish. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:43
"Can you bounce all the way to the clouds?" | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
asked the longest pipefish. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
"Course I can," said Andrew, "I'll show you." | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
Yes, I know, Salt, I know. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
Being boasty isn't good at all. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:59
Sally was worried about her friend. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
"The clouds are a very long way, Andrew. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
"I'm not sure anyone can bounce as far as that." | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
But Andrew was determined. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
Boing, boing, boing he bounced | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
and he bounced, but he couldn't reach the clouds. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
He tried again - bo-oi-oi-oi-oi-oing! | 0:08:19 | 0:08:23
And again - boing! But it was no use. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
"Oh, I wish I hadn't been so boasty," he thought, | 0:08:26 | 0:08:31
but he decided to try one last time. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
Boing! Boing! | 0:08:34 | 0:08:38
Boing! | 0:08:38 | 0:08:39
Up he went and then on the way down, guess what happened. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:44
He brushed past Sue's fluffy headband, | 0:08:44 | 0:08:49
taking some with him. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
He landed and the pipefish cheered. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
"Look!" cried the pipefish, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
"He's been to the clouds and he's brought | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
"a little slip of cloud back with him." | 0:08:58 | 0:09:02
"Er, yeah, well, um..." | 0:09:02 | 0:09:04
Andrew tried to explain, but the pipefish were too busy cheering. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:09
"Yeah, thank you for the show" said the stripy pipefish. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:13
"Even better than last year!" | 0:09:13 | 0:09:15
I looked down at my candyfloss | 0:09:17 | 0:09:21
and that looked very fluffy, too | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
and then I thought of a circus name for myself. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:29
I'm Jack, the Cloud-Catcher! | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
"I'm Jack, the Cloud-Catcher" | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
I said, holding my candyfloss up as if it were a cloud on a stick. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:39
And off we went back down the beach. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
Twirly Ernie spinning his cup. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:48
Soaring Sue balancing on the rocks | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
and Jack, the Cloud-Catcher, with the cloud on a stick. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:56
And we played for the rest of the day until the tide came in | 0:09:57 | 0:10:03
and covered the rock pool like a great seaweedy blanket. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:08
Ah, Salty, they were magical days back then, they were. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:20
Salty, come here. Come on. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
Come on. I've found something behind your ear. Look at that. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:27
You were hiding that, weren't you? | 0:10:27 | 0:10:29
HE LAUGHS | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
Good girl. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:33
Yes, you can always find a bit of magic if you look, can't you, girl? | 0:10:33 | 0:10:38
You come back soon for some more Rockpool Tales, all right? | 0:10:38 | 0:10:43
Goodbye. It's empty. Sorry. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:48 |
