Oh, thank you! Ha-ha-ha! | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
Ah! Lovely! What's this all about, then, Salty? | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
Eh? | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27 | |
Oh! Well, I never! | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
It's an invitation. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
It's my friend Sam's birthday party this afternoon. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:37
And that's perfect, because it means I've got time to tell you a story. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:44
And it's a story about a party invitation. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
One that went missing. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
Yes. Oh! It all happened when I was a boy. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:55
In a twinkly time long, long ago. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
Hello, Sue! | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
I used to run down to play on the beach as often as I could. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
Meeting up with my best friends, Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:12
One afternoon, Little Sailor Sue and I were looking | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
for shells on the beach and we were wondering where Little Ernie was. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:26
I spotted a familiar shape over by the rocks. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
That's Ernie. What's he doing? | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
He was flapping his arms in the air and jumping from rock to rock, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:41
as if he was chasing something. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
Well, Sue and I decided that Ernie probably needed some help, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
so off we dashed. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:49
When we got there, Ernie was looking muddled. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:54
It must be here somewhere! | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
"What are you looking for?" I asked. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
A party invitation. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
"A party invitation," Ernie replied. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
The wind had blown it out of his hand. Whoosh! | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
And he'd chased it and chased it, but it got away. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
Now I can't find it anywhere! | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
So Ernie hopped off to find the lost party invitation, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:19
looking in every rockpool as he went. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
Sue and I looked in the rockpool near to us, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
and as we gazed deep down into the glittery waters, | 0:03:26 | 0:03:30
a magical world appeared before our eyes. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
One bright morning, Andrew the anemone | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
was bouncing across the sandy bed of the rockpool | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
when he heard a "plop" sound from up above. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
Something had landed in the rockpool. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:56
He looked up and he saw a strange object | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
floating on the surface above him. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
"That needs investigating," he said to himself. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
So he swished his way through the water and plopped out | 0:04:06 | 0:04:11
next to the strange object, | 0:04:11 | 0:04:12
and right next to Reginald, the great wise limpet. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
"Wow!" said Andrew. "What's that?" | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
"I have no idea," said Reginald, in his grand voice. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:25
"But it came from the sky, so I imagine it's a kite with no tail." | 0:04:25 | 0:04:32
"Isn't it a bit small to be a kite?" he said. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
"A proper kite would fill this whole rockpool." | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
"Then it must be a very tiny kite | 0:04:39 | 0:04:43
"flown by a very tiny person," | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
said Reginald, wisely. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
"I imagine they weren't big enough to hold onto it and it flew off." | 0:04:48 | 0:04:54
You like flying kites, don't you, Salty? | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
Oh-ho, she does, honestly! Ha! | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
Anyway, Andrew swam carefully over to the tiny kite | 0:05:00 | 0:05:05
floating in the water and he inspected it. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
He saw there was an opening on one end, and carefully, | 0:05:09 | 0:05:13
he wriggled under the opening to see what was inside. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:17
And inside was another piece of paper. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
It was decorated with balloons and said, | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
"You are invited to a party." | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
Well, it wasn't a kite, was it? WOOF! | 0:05:27 | 0:05:29
Yeah, that's right, Salty. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:31
Yes, Andrew had clambered inside an envelope | 0:05:31 | 0:05:36
and found a party invitation. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
Ha! | 0:05:39 | 0:05:40 | |
Just then, Andrew felt the envelope move | 0:05:40 | 0:05:44
and he felt himself start to rise up in the air. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:48
He wriggled back to the opening of the envelope and peeped out, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
and there he saw the rockpool below him, | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
with Reginald looking up at him with a surprised look on his face. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:59
"I told you it was a kite," called Reginald. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
"It must be. You are flying away, up in the sky." | 0:06:03 | 0:06:08
And it was true. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
Andrew and the party invitation were flying. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:15
Andrew was being carried by none other than our old friend | 0:06:16 | 0:06:21
Brenda the stork. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
Brenda had scooped Andrew and the envelope up from the rockpool. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:29
"Dear me," said Brenda, muttering to herself. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
"Did I drop an envelope? | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
"Now it's all wet and I shall have to dry it in my nest." | 0:06:34 | 0:06:39
With a flap of her great wings, she skimmed off through the sky. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:44
Inside the envelope, Andrew was rolling | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
and tumbling all over the place. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:49
Which was actually quite fun! | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
Well, eventually, Brenda arrived at her big nest, | 0:06:52 | 0:06:56
which she'd built on one of the chimneypots in Staithes | 0:06:56 | 0:07:00
with twigs and grass. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
She hung the soggy envelope up to dry. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
"Brenda? Brenda?" called Andrew. "I'm in here!" | 0:07:06 | 0:07:10
But Brenda hadn't heard him | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
and had already set off and was now a little flappy dot in the sky. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:20
Oh, dear. Not good, is it, Salty, eh? | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
SALTY WHIMPERS | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
Andrew looked out of his soggy envelope hanging on the line. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
He wanted to be down in his rockpool, | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
but his rockpool was a very, very long way down. Oh! | 0:07:33 | 0:07:38
And then, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
Andrew had a brilliant idea. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
Brenda would be delivering more letters later, | 0:07:42 | 0:07:46
and he was going to get himself delivered | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
right back to his lovely rockpool and all his friends. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
He nuzzled himself down in the envelope, | 0:07:54 | 0:07:58
which was drying in the sun. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
Eventually, Brenda flapped back over and inspected the envelope. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:06
"Well, that looks dry enough to deliver," she said. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:11
And she plucked the envelope off the washing line, | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
popped it into her bag and flew away with it. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:18
Andrew peeked out of the envelope as the wind whooshed past him. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:23
He looked down and he saw his rockpool far below. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
And this was really the clever bit of Andrew's plan. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:31
He wriggled to the end of the envelope | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
and then he bounced out of the bag | 0:08:35 | 0:08:38
and, like the pilot of an airplane, | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
he started to fly the envelope this way and that way. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:46
And it swooped and dived on the sea breezes | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
until, with a gentle plop, | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
Andrew landed right back in the rockpool. Oh! | 0:08:53 | 0:09:00
"Welcome home," said Reginald. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:05
Well, Andrew smiled and smiled and smiled. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:11
He was home. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
He dived down under the water and went to tell his friends | 0:09:14 | 0:09:19
all about the incredible adventure he'd had that bright, sunny day. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:25
Sue and I looked up from the rockpool as we heard Ernie shout... | 0:09:25 | 0:09:29
There it is! | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
He had spotted the envelope floating in the far corner of the rockpool. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:37
It was his party invitation. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
We fished it out and handed it to him proudly. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
But Ernie, he looked upset. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
Thank you, but it's all wet now. It's ruined. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:50
"Who was it for?" asked Sue. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:52
"It was for you two," Ernie said. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
I was inviting you to my party on the beach. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
We looked at each other and we smiled. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:01
Ernie, we don't need an invitation now, you've just invited us. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:05
Ernie thought about it and he smiled, too. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:07
Oh. I suppose I did. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
THEY CHUCKLE | 0:10:09 | 0:10:11
And with that, we took the soggy invitation back to the beach | 0:10:11 | 0:10:16
to start the party. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:17
And we stayed on the beach for the rest of the day, | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
until it was time to go home. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:26
And the tide came in and covered the rockpool | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29
like a great seaweedy blanket. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:31
Anyway, we are off to Sam's party now. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
All right, do you want to come? | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
Come on. Come on, girl. That's it. Good girl. Come on. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:48
Oh! Why don't you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time? | 0:10:52 | 0:10:57
Goodbye. Come on, girl. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:00
WOOF! | 0:11:00 | 0:11:02 |
