-Hello, Ernie. -Hello, Jack. And you too, Salty. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
-Do you mind if we join you? -No! Not at all. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
-I was just having a break. -Yeah? | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
-Jam sandwiches! -Oh, you know, you cannot beat a jam sandwich. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
You can have one if you like. I've made plenty. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
Do you want one too, Salty? | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
No, no, no. Jam sandwiches are people food. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
It just so happens that I have a dog biscuit that you might enjoy. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
Ready? Ready, ready? | 0:02:05 | 0:02:06
Whoa! (LAUGHS) | 0:02:06 | 0:02:07
Very good! What a clever girl! | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
I have no idea where she learnt that from. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
I didn't teach her. It's a mystery. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
-A true mystery. -Yeah. -BOTH LAUGH | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
Now, sandwiches. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
(CLEARS THROAT) Ernie, you've sat on them. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
Ohhh! Ruined! And I was really, really hungry too! | 0:02:24 | 0:02:30
Yeah, I tell you what, I'll treat us to a cake at the Mermaid. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
Oh, thanks, Jack! JACK LAUGHS | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
Now we're talking! | 0:02:36 | 0:02:37
Look at the state of those! | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
JACK LAUGHS | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
-Hello, Shelly. -And hello to you too. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
-We've come for cake. -Oh, dear. There are no cakes today. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:55
Eh? You're always baking cakes. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
Nobody bakes a cake like you do, Shelly. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
And I'm hungry! I sat on me sandwiches! | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
-LAUGHS -I'm sorry, Ernie, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
but I'm afraid it's true. No cakes. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
We've had a power cut, so there's no electricity. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
-No! -Without electricity I can't do any baking. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
I've got to shut up shop until the power comes back on. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
Yeah, well, wouldn't a little bit of Shelly magic help? | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
I don't know what you're talking about, Jack. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
JACK CHUCKLES First no sandwiches and now no cake! | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
-It's not my day! -Never mind. Let's pop over to Emily's, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
she'll give you an ice cream. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28
An ice cream! Now you're talking! | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
-Yeah. -You're a marvel, you are, Jack. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
Well, look, there's Emily's stall, but where's Emily? | 0:03:33 | 0:03:38
-There's ice cream in the freezer! -Oi-oi! | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
You'll have to ask Emily first, Ernie. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
I will! But where is she?! | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
-Oh, what's going on today?! -I have to get back to The Rainbow. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
I've got jobs to do. We could find you something to eat on board. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:53
No, you're all right, Jack, I'll wait here for Emily. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
-All right. Good luck. -Catch you later, Jack. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
There she is! The Rainbow! | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
What have you got for us today, my dear? | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
FOGHORN | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
HE LAUGHS | 0:04:14 | 0:04:15
Come on, Salty. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
HE HUMS | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
There we are. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
WOOD CREAKS | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
FOGHORN | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
I'll have a look in here. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
Oh. No food for Ernie here either, old girl. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:36
-HE SIGHS -Nothing to drink either. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
And you can't drink seawater. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
It's too salty, isn't it, Salty? | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
Here, do you know how the sea came to be salty? | 0:04:45 | 0:04:50
Well, Salty and I do. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
I'll just make myself... comfortable. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:54
Ah! | 0:04:54 | 0:04:55 | |
Once upon a twinkly time, | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
The Rainbow set off from Staithes, waved goodbye to Whitby | 0:04:58 | 0:05:03
and disappeared over the horizon. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
We were fishing that day, and as we fished, we sang. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
# Just Salty Dog and me | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
# On the salty, shiny sea | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
# There's all sorts of food we're wanting to eat | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
# We need a quick break and a good tasty treat... # Don't we? | 0:05:18 | 0:05:22
# ..But before it gets wet We'll haul in the net | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
-# Just Salty Dog and me. # -FOGHORN | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
Salty was hungry, so before we turned for home | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
I hauled in the net | 0:05:32 | 0:05:34
and there, tangled in the seaweed, was a trident. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:38
Now, as I'm sure you know, the great sea king Neptune carries a trident | 0:05:38 | 0:05:43
to control the waves. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
It's a kind of magical fork. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:49
And Salty thought this trident belonged to King Neptune, | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
and we should return it to his underwater palace straight away. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
So off we set. | 0:05:57 | 0:05:59
We waded through the watery world until we got to an underwater gate | 0:05:59 | 0:06:05
guarded by two gruff-looking soldier fish. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
"What is your business with King Neptune?" said one. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:13
But then both soldier fish caught sight of the trident | 0:06:13 | 0:06:18
and their eyes grew round and they bowed a fishy bow. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
"Make way!" shouted one. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
"For the bearer of the trident!" shouted the other. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:28
Well, the gates swished apart and soon we found ourselves | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
in the presence of the great sea king Neptune. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:38
"My trident!" he bellowed. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
And Salty and I wondered if we were in trouble. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
But we needn't have worried. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
King Neptune was so overjoyed to have his trident back, | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
he gave us a gift. "Take this magic shell," he said. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
"Whatever you wish to eat, just ask the shell and it will be yours!" | 0:06:52 | 0:06:58
Then King Neptune told us the magic words to make it work. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:03
"Neptune's shell. All is well." | 0:07:03 | 0:07:07
"But don't forget," warned the sea king, | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
"you must always thank the shell for what you receive | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
"or the magic will turn against you." | 0:07:13 | 0:07:18
So we said thank you to King Neptune and went on our way, | 0:07:18 | 0:07:23
eager to try out our magic shell. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
Back on board The Rainbow, I let Salty have the first wish. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
"Neptune's shell. All is well." | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
And Salty woofed her wish. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
She wanted some of her favourite dog biscuits - | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
peanut butter flavour. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
To our amazement, the magic shell | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
poured out a load of beautiful biscuits. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
And, of course, both Salty and I were very careful to say thank you. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:55
And now it was my turn. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
As I was considering what my wish would be, | 0:07:57 | 0:08:01
a ship drew up close to The Rainbow. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
It was The Hurlyburly, with Kitty Cutlass at the helm. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
Her pirate nose was a-twitching at the smell of peanut butter. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:15
But of course, I didn't notice her creeping up on us - | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
I was still working on my wish. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
"Neptune's shell. All is well." I said. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
"I'd like some fat golden chips, please." | 0:08:25 | 0:08:30
In a twinkle, the shell poured out a pile of beautiful golden chips! | 0:08:30 | 0:08:36
And, of course, I remembered to say thank you. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:40
If I'm honest, as good as they looked, | 0:08:40 | 0:08:44
the chips needed a bit of salt. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
So we nipped down to the galley for the salt pot. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
I had no idea that Kitty was watching, | 0:08:49 | 0:08:53
and she had a dastardly plan. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
While we were gone, that rascally pirate took the opportunity | 0:08:55 | 0:09:00
to nip in and steal my chips, and the magic shell as well. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:06
Well, when I returned with the salt pot, | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
I found my chips had disappeared. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
And where was the magic shell? | 0:09:11 | 0:09:13
Salty pointed to a distant ship sailing away as fast as it could. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:19
The Hurlyburly, of course! | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
Kitty Cutlass was sailing away with the magic shell and my lunch! | 0:09:21 | 0:09:27
What a rascally pirate she is! | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
On board The Hurlyburly, | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
Kitty settled down to eat her ill-gotten gains. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
But as she tasted the chips, she made a sort of scrunched-up face. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:41
"Urgh! Jack was right," she said, "they do need a bit of salt." | 0:09:41 | 0:09:47
"Well, since I have a magic shell, I think I shall magic some salt." | 0:09:47 | 0:09:53
"Now, what were the magic words?" | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
"Ah, yes. 'Neptune's shell. All is well.' " | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
"I want some salt now!" | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
Well, no sooner had Kitty wished | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
than the first little sprinkle of salt came out of the shell. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:11
"Oh, more than that," said Kitty crossly. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
The shell sprinkled a little bit more than the first time. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:19
"Oh, come on!" barked Kitty. "More!" | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
So the salt started to sprinkle out of the shell even faster. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:29
"Right, stop there," said Kitty. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
But the shell didn't stop. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
Soon the chips were completely covered with salt | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
and couldn't be eaten. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
And still the shell didn't stop pouring out salt. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:44
It's well known that pirates have very bad manners, | 0:10:44 | 0:10:49
and, of course, Kitty hadn't thanked the shell. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
So the salt just kept on flowing and flowing, | 0:10:52 | 0:10:56
over the table, on to the floor, still it kept coming. | 0:10:56 | 0:11:00
More and more salt poured out of the shell | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
until the ship was almost completely full. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:07
Any more salt, and The Hurlyburly would sink! | 0:11:07 | 0:11:11
There was nothing for it. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
Kitty picked up the magic shell and hurled it into the sea! | 0:11:13 | 0:11:18
Where it disappeared with an enormous splash. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:22
She then had to spend the rest of the day | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
shovelling salt out of her boat to stop it sinking, | 0:11:25 | 0:11:29
which served her right. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:32
I was still hungry, but I wasn't sure about magical chips after that, | 0:11:34 | 0:11:40
so I peeled some spuds and cooked myself chips | 0:11:40 | 0:11:44
the usual way - on the stove. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
And gorgeous they were, too. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:48
Especially with a little sprinkle of salt on them. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:52
And the magic shell? | 0:11:52 | 0:11:54
Well, it came to rest far below the waves on the seabed. | 0:11:54 | 0:12:00
And because Kitty didn't say thank you, | 0:12:00 | 0:12:04
it continues to pour out salt to this very day. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:09
And that's why the sea is salty. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:12
-Isn't that right, Salty? -SALTY BARKS | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
Mmm. See, she knows. Oh, yes. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
FOGHORN | 0:12:18 | 0:12:21
You like that story, Salty? Yeah? | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
All true, of course. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
-Mind you, my stories always are. -HE LAUGHS | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
Come on, girl. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
You know, Salty, it's still a bit of a mystery to me | 0:12:42 | 0:12:45
how you learnt to catch dog biscuits. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:47
Oh! Hiya, Jack! | 0:12:47 | 0:12:48
I see you've found some ice cream after all. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
It's my lucky day. Remember we had that power cut? | 0:12:51 | 0:12:54
Yeah. There was no electricity. Shelly couldn't finish her baking. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
That's right. It also meant | 0:12:57 | 0:12:59
that Emily's ice cream freezer wasn't working. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:03
-And? -That meant it would melt if it didn't get eaten! | 0:13:03 | 0:13:07
I can't have all this ice cream going to waste, | 0:13:07 | 0:13:11
so I wonder if you'd help us eat it? | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
Well, I think I could manage a little. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16
-Oh, marvellous! -Thank you. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:18
-Oh, I haven't forgotten you, Salty. -Eh? | 0:13:18 | 0:13:22
Good girl! Well learnt! | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
So you're the one who taught her that! | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
Of course! Salty often pops by for a little dog biscuit, don't you? | 0:13:27 | 0:13:32
You never told me that, did you? Did you? | 0:13:32 | 0:13:36
Biscuit-catching mystery solved! Ice cream, anyone? | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
-Yes, please. -LAUGHS | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
-Look at that! That's a good bit! -I've got a bit with toffee on! | 0:13:42 | 0:13:46
Mmm! Lovely! | 0:13:46 | 0:13:48
