and have a good snooze, so don't disturb me. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:04

Oh, lovely. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08

You're starting to sound like Grandpa Pops. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
I'll call you back in a minute. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
-Over. -And out. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27
'Ha-ha!' | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
Huh! He says I sound like Grandpa Pops, Salty. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
Ha-ha! Dear me. Do you remember him? | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
Oh, he was the oldest sailor in the world. Remember the day he ran away? | 0:03:37 | 0:03:42
Hoo! Here, let me tell you the story. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
Once upon a twinkly time, the Rainbow set off from Staithes, | 0:03:45 | 0:03:50
waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:55
And as we sailed along the coast, we sang. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
# Just Salty Dog and me Upon the silvery sea | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
# We're never too old for a sail in the sun | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
# It's never a bother We always have fun | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
# We'll sail on for years With the wind in our ears | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
# Just Salty Dog and me. # | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
Ha-ha-ha-ha! | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
Well, we had just finished singing when a voice cried out, | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
"Hello, young man!" "Young man?" I thought. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
"It's been a while since anybody called me that. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
"There's only one person it can be." | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
I looked at the shore through my trusty old telescope. Ha-ha! | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34
And there he was, Grandpa Pops. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:38
Now, Grandpa Pops had a beaming, sunny face. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
He was an old man when I was a boy. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
Some people in the village said he must be 114 years old. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:49
The oldest sailor in the world. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:52
And now he was sitting outside the old folks' home in his wheelchair. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:56
He called out, "Jack, young fellow my lad, can I ask you a favour? | 0:04:56 | 0:05:02
"Can you take me for a ride on the Rainbow one last time?" | 0:05:02 | 0:05:07
Well, I called back, "I'd love to, but you've got really kind doctors | 0:05:07 | 0:05:11
"and really nice nurses inside that old folks' home. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
"Won't they mind if I take you out to sea?" | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18
"No, they won't mind a bit," said Grandpa Pops. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:23
And he wheeled himself down to the jetty at top speed, | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
saying, "Whee-ee-ee!" all the way down. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
I was just helping him on board the Rainbow | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
when I heard voices calling out. "Grandpa!" they shouted. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
"Grandpa Pops, where are you?" | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
I could see all the kind doctors and all the nice nurses | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
from the old folks' home looking for Grandpa Pops. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
I said, "Grandpa Pops, I'd better take you back." | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
But he said, "No, lad, it's just a game of hide and seek. Let's go." | 0:05:50 | 0:05:54
So we set out to sea, but behind us all the kind doctors | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
and all the nice nurses came running down to the jetty. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:03
They shouted out, "Grandpa Pops! Grandpa Pops! Come back!" | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
But Grandpa Pops said to me, | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
"Don't worry about them, they're only having fun. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
"Keep going!" | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
So we sailed along the coast, but all the kind doctors | 0:06:14 | 0:06:18
and all the nice nurses kept chasing over the cliff tops. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
They shouted, "Come back, Grandpa Pops! | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
"It's time you had your tea, it's time you went to bed! Come back!" | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
And now, I was a tiny little bit suspicious. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
I said, "Grandpa Pops, are you being naughty?" | 0:06:33 | 0:06:38
And Grandpa Pops gave a cheeky smile and he said, "Naughty? | 0:06:39 | 0:06:44
"Why, Jack, I don't know the meaning of the word." | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
Then he took hold of the ship's wheel | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
and steered the Rainbow out to sea. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
All the kind doctors and nice nurses stood on the cliffs | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
and watched us go until they became tiny little dots in the distance. | 0:06:56 | 0:07:01
-And then... -POP! | 0:07:01 | 0:07:02
..they were gone. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
Now, I'm not daft. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
I knew that Grandpa Pops was being a little bit naughty. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:12
But then I thought, "Maybe that is allowed, | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
"just once when you have had your 114th birthday." | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
Hoo-hoo! | 0:07:19 | 0:07:21
So I said, "I don't mind a bit of fun and games | 0:07:21 | 0:07:25
"but as soon as we return, | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
"I'm taking you straight back to the old folks' home." | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
But Grandpa Pops just smiled. Like he had a little secret. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:36
And he whistled a sea shanty as we sailed far out to sea. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
WHISTLING | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
After a while, Salty started barking. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
She woofed, "I know where we are." | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
I looked around and said, "This is where Pearl lives." | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
Huh, and there she was, | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
Pearl, the mermaid - swimming, waving, | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
splashing the water with her long, silvery, mermaid's tail. | 0:07:56 | 0:08:01
She called out, | 0:08:01 | 0:08:02
"Hello, Jack! Hello, Salty! Hello, Grandpa Pops!" | 0:08:02 | 0:08:07
I was a bit surprised. I said, "How do you know Grandpa Pops?" | 0:08:07 | 0:08:11
Pearl said, "All the mer-people know Grandpa Pops." | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
"That's me!" said Grandpa Pops. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
And he wheeled his wheelchair up to the edge of the boat | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
and then he jumped overboard into the water, splash. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:28
"Goodness me," I said. "Be careful, Grandpa Pops!" But he could swim. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:36
Grandpa Pops could swim like a bird flies through the sky. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:41
All of a sudden, he didn't look old. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
He looked as young as can be as he darted through the water, | 0:08:44 | 0:08:48
laughing with Pearl swimming around him. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
Salty and I were laughing, too, | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
cos we had never seen anyone look so happy. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
Then Grandpa Pops said to Pearl, "I've come to collect my gift." | 0:08:57 | 0:09:03
I said, "What gift is that, then?" And Pearl explained. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:08
Once upon a time, Grandpa Pops did a wonderful thing. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:12
The King of the Sea had a child, his only son, | 0:09:12 | 0:09:16
but the boy had fallen into a deep, deep sleep | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
and no-one could wake him. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:20
"Oh, dear," I said, "that is sad." "No, it's not," said Pearl, | 0:09:20 | 0:09:24
"because the Sea King called out for help, and Grandpa Pops arrived. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:30
"He looked at the boy in his deep, deep sleep." | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
"And what did he do?" I said. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:35
Pearl replied, "He held a bottle of pop under the boy's nose, | 0:09:35 | 0:09:40
"and the fizzy bubbles woke him up. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
"That's why everyone calls him Grandpa Pops, because of the pop." | 0:09:44 | 0:09:48
Then Grandpa Pops said, "The Sea King promised me a gift to thank me | 0:09:48 | 0:09:53
"for saving his son all those years ago | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
"and now I've come to collect it." | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
Pearl said, "I will summon the King," | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
and she blew upon a conch shell. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:05
It made a loud, magnificent sound. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:09
CONCH BLOWS LIKE A HORN | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
Then, the water rose up, and the sea spray curled back | 0:10:12 | 0:10:17
like a huge fountain, and the mighty Sea King rose out of the water. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:23
He sat on a big, tall throne made of coral. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
I've never seen the Sea King looking so splendid, | 0:10:26 | 0:10:31
all wrapped in seaweed, | 0:10:31 | 0:10:32
carrying a trident, with shoals of mermaids | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
and mermen swimming all around him. I was amazed. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:39
And Grandpa Pops called out, | 0:10:39 | 0:10:42
"I'm here, oh, mighty King, can I have my gift now?" | 0:10:42 | 0:10:46
The Sea King looked down upon us. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
I have never seen eyes so ancient and powerful. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:56
He didn't say a single word | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
but he lifted up his trident and pointed it at Grandpa Pops, | 0:10:59 | 0:11:04
and magic came out of his trident, a swirl of stars and water | 0:11:04 | 0:11:10
and glitter and magic swirled around Grandpa Pops. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:14
He laughed and laughed like a tickle. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:18
And I said, "Look at that, Salty." | 0:11:18 | 0:11:20
The magic swirled around Grandpa Pops' legs, | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
and his legs began to change. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:27
His knobbly knees faded away, and all of a sudden, | 0:11:27 | 0:11:31
Grandpa Pops had a fishtail, all silvery and shiny, | 0:11:31 | 0:11:37
just like the mermaids and the mermen. Now he could really swim. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:42
With a whoop, he dived up into the air | 0:11:42 | 0:11:45
then plunged down into the depths. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
Then back up again, laughing and laughing as he went. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
It looked like so much fun. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:56
Then he called out, "Goodbye, Jack! | 0:11:56 | 0:12:00
"Goodbye, Salty! | 0:12:00 | 0:12:01
"I'm going to join the mer-people and swim with them for ever." | 0:12:01 | 0:12:06
I said, "But what about the old folks' home?" | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
He said, "I'm not old any more! | 0:12:09 | 0:12:11
"They won't have room for me. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
"I am as ageless as the water now. I'm as young as a mountain spring." | 0:12:14 | 0:12:19
And then the mighty Sea King sank beneath the waves, | 0:12:19 | 0:12:23
and all the others plunged down alongside him. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:27
I caught one last glimpse of Grandpa Pops, laughing with Pearl | 0:12:27 | 0:12:32
and her sisters as they swam away into the underwater kingdom | 0:12:32 | 0:12:37
to begin his new life. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
And to this day, I still hear him sometimes. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:44
When the wind is in the right direction, | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
I catch a drift of Grandpa Pops, far out at sea, | 0:12:47 | 0:12:53
laughing and laughing with the mermaids and the mermen. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:58
"Keep swimming!" I call to the waves. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
"You keep swimming, Grandpa Pops! Swim for ever!" | 0:13:01 | 0:13:07
'Calling Jack!' | 0:13:16 | 0:13:17
Calling Jack! | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
And now for that snooze, Salty. All I need is a duster. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:25
'Calling Jack. Calling Jack...' | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
There you are. Little trick I learnt from Grandpa Pops. There. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:32
MUFFLED: 'Calling Jack!' | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
-Calling Jack! Jack, can you hear me? -It should be working. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:43
-I fixed it myself. -You don't think he's avoiding us, do you? -Jack?! No! | 0:13:43 | 0:13:48
He'd never do that. Would he? | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
