BIRDSONG | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Ah, well, Salty, I wonder what the weather's going to do today? | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
I think we'd better go and ask Emily. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
She always knows, doesn't she? Come on, girl. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
Go on, down here. That's it. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:51
-Hello, Em! What's the weather going to be like? -Ssh! | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
What's up? | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
-I'm nesting! -Oh, right. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
So I can't tell you what the weather's going to be like. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
-Right, right, right. -I'm not having a very good morning, actually. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
-What is it, the seagulls? -Seagulls. -Yeah. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
-Seem to be plenty of them around. -Yes, but they're nesting. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
And when they're nesting, they can't hang around with me | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
-and predict the weather. -No. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
So I've built meself a nest to attract them over. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
-Right. Any luck? -Nothing. -No. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
Don't ask me what the weather's going to do because I've no idea! | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
I'll, I'll, I'll leave you to your nesting. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
-Thank you, Jack. -Yes. Come along, Salty. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
You look busy, Sam. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
Hello, you two! Nice to see you. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
You've got your work cut out with this lot, haven't you? | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
We're overrun with seaweed. I'm trying to clear some of it away. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
I don't know what I'm going to do with it! | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
You've got some in your... | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
-Toolbox? -No. -Coffee. -No, no, no. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
-In your hair. Look. -Ooo! Seaweed hair! | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
-Why didn't you say? -Well, I tried. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
I wish I had some idea what to do with this. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
Why don't you talk to Emily? | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
She could make ice cream out of anything. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
Hm! Good idea, Jack. I'll take it to Emily. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
She's up there. She's nesting. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
Yes. We'd better get going, then. Oh, by the way, you missed a bit. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
-Goodbye, Jack. -Goodbye. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
-You missed a bit! That was a good one, wasn't it, Salty? -Oh, dear! | 0:03:20 | 0:03:25
There she is! The Rainbow! | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
What have you got for us today, me dear? | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
WHISTLE TOOTS | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
Hey-hey! Come on, Salty. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
JACK HUMS A TUNE | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
Here we are. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:47
Go on, then, in your bed. Good girl! Go on. Huh! | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
Sam was getting in a tangle with that seaweed, wasn't she, Salty? | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
I seem to remember that our favourite mermaid, Pearl, | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
she had the same problem once. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
Do you remember? Yeah. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:11
Let me get comfortable and I'll tell you the story. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:15
Oh, yes, Salty! | 0:04:15 | 0:04:16
This will make your fur go curly, this one will. Ha-ha! Right. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:21
Once upon a twinkly time, the Rainbow set off from Staithes, | 0:04:21 | 0:04:26
waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:31
"I'm in the mood for a singsong," said Salty. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
"And so am I," I said. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
# Just Salty Dog and me | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
# Upon the briny sea | 0:04:40 | 0:04:41
# You never did see such a smiley pair | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
# We're sailing off to who-knows-where | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
# With the wind to assist us and whiffle our whiskers... # | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
Whiffle-whiffle-whiffle! | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
# Just Salty Dog and me. # | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
Suddenly, out of nowhere, there was a huge bump | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
which sent us skittering across the deck | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
and made the Rainbow rock wildly. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
"Scuttling spider crabs, what was that?" I cried. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
We looked overboard to see what had caused the problem, | 0:05:09 | 0:05:13
but all we saw was a carpet of seaweed floating on the waves. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:17
"Not to worry, Salty, whatever it was has gone now," I said. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:22
"Let's get on with giving you a good brush." | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
Salty sat very nicely at first, cos she likes being brushed, you see. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:32
Says it feels like a lot of tiny tickles. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
And then, who should appear from out of the waves | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
but our favourite mermaid, Pearl. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
"All right, Pearl?" I said. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
"Lovely to see you, but what has happened to your hair? | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
"I've never seen it in such a mess." | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
"I haven't had time to comb it," she said. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
"But seeing as Salty is having her fur brushed, I'll pamper myself." | 0:05:53 | 0:05:59
So she got out her shell comb and she began to comb her hair. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:05
Salty suddenly let out a yowl. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
"Y-e-e-e-eow! | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
"There's a huge seaweed beasty in the sea!" | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
But when Pearl and I looked, | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
all we could see was a carpet of seaweed floating on the waves. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:21
But before I could reply, another huge bump rocked the boat. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
"Galloping seahorses," I said. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
"Something's giving us the bumps! Ooo!" | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
"Well, whatever it is has made me drop my comb," said Pearl crossly. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:37
Well, we looked overboard and saw the carpet of seaweed. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
Then something sparkled. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:43
"My comb!" cried Pearl. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
"It's caught in the seaweed!" | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
And she jumped into the waves to rescue it. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
Then, before you could say jiggly jellyfish, | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
the seaweed carpet rose out of the waves | 0:06:54 | 0:06:59
with Pearl tangled in it. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
"That's no seaweed carpet," I said. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:05
"It's the seaweed hair on the humungous head | 0:07:05 | 0:07:09
"of a huge seaweed beasty!" | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
"Help!" cried Pearl. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
"Uh-oh," I said. "There is a huge seaweed beasty after all." | 0:07:14 | 0:07:20
"I told you so," barked Salty. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
The seaweed beasty jolted the boat again | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
and then swam off at speed with Pearl clinging to it. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:32
"Jump off, Pearl!" we cried. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
"I can't! I'm tangled!" she called. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
"Come on, Salty", I said, taking the wheel. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
"We'd better make chase." | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
Well, the beasty swam north with us close behind. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:49
Lighthouse Rock was up ahead and the beasty swam straight for it. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:54
"Watch out for the rock," we cried. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
But it was too late. The beasty hit it. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
Ooo! Huge bump! | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
Making the lighthouse wibble-wobble. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:04
"Oi!" cried the lighthouse keeper, shaking her fist. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:08
"Sorry," cried Pearl, "but the beasty won't stop!" | 0:08:08 | 0:08:12
"Hold on tight, Pearl, we're not far behind you," I called. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
The beasty kept swimming north. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
The waves were choppy now and a keen wind was blowing. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
It started to feel very chilly. Brrr! | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
I mean, there were icicles hanging from our whiskers. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
On and on swam the beasty until it reached the Sea of Icebergs, | 0:08:28 | 0:08:33
where blue, white icy mountains rose out of the waves. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:38
And then suddenly, guess what? | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
The beasty stopped. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
"At last," I said. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
And I brought the Rainbow up alongside it. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
"Are you all right, Pearl?" I called. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
"I'm fine, but my hair's more tangly than ever," she answered. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:56
"I just want to get my comb back." | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
Well, Pearl turned to the beasty and asked, | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
"Please, could you keep still a moment | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
"while I untangle my tail and my lovely shell comb?" | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
"Oh, all right, then," groaned the beasty. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:13
"I'm Pearl, by the way. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:15
"I've been clinging to the top of your head for quite some time. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
"You really are a very bumpy beasty, aren't you?" | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
"Please could you speak a little more quietly?" groaned the beasty. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:27
"I have a terrible headache." | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
"I'm not surprised you have a headache," Pearl whispered, | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
as she untangled her tail. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:35
"You've been bumping into things all day." | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
"You even bumped my boat," I added. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:40
"More than once," yapped Salty. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
"I'm sorry," grizzled the beasty, | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
"but I can't see where I'm going. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:48
"My long, seaweedy hair keeps getting in the way." | 0:09:48 | 0:09:54
"Salty has that problem sometimes," I said. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:58
"And I have to give her fur a good combing, | 0:09:58 | 0:10:01
"but we'd never get a comb through your seaweed coils." | 0:10:01 | 0:10:05
Phwoar! Look at it! | 0:10:05 | 0:10:06
We wanted to help, but didn't know how. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
And then suddenly, Salty's whiskers whiffled. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:15
She was having one of her bright ideas. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
And off she scampered. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
Then she came back with a bit of spare netting in her mouth. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:25
She wanted us to make the beasty a hair net. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:29
"Oh, that's a brilliant idea, Salty, my girl," I said. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:34
"Let me get my comb out first, though," said Pearl. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
And she gently freed it from the beasty's curls. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:41
Then we twined its hair into a curly knot. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:46
And we put the fishing net on top. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
It looked very smart indeed. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
"Oh, thank you," said the beasty. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:55
"Now I can see where I'm going." | 0:10:55 | 0:10:59
Well, it was time to head for home. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
But we had a problem. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:04
The icebergs had surrounded us. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:08
It was going to be impossible to get the boat through them | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
without hitting them. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
And if you bash into an iceberg, it can sink your ship. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
"Now we're scuppered," I said. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
"Don't worry," said the seaweed beasty. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:23
"I can give the icebergs the bumps." | 0:11:23 | 0:11:27
"But what about your headache?" said Pearl. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
"This time, I'll use my tail," said the beasty. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:35
Bump! | 0:11:35 | 0:11:36 | |
It bumped the icebergs with its huge, powerful tail, | 0:11:36 | 0:11:41
making a clear path. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:44
"You're a very helpful beasty," we called, as we set our course south. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:50
"And you've got a great hairstyle, too." Ha-ha! | 0:11:50 | 0:11:54
And with that, we sailed off to Staithes and home. Hm-hm! | 0:11:54 | 0:12:00
What a voyage, eh! Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo! | 0:12:00 | 0:12:02
Did you like that story, Salty? | 0:12:09 | 0:12:11
Yeah? All true, of course. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
Mind you, my stories always are. Ho-ho-ho! | 0:12:14 | 0:12:17
Come on, girl. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:18
-Jack! -Hi, Sam. How did you get on? | 0:12:26 | 0:12:29
-I managed to clear the worst of it away. -Oh, good. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
What have you done with it? Don't tell me. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
-Emily's put it in the ice cream, right? -No. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
This is vanilla, thank goodness. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
But Emily did get very excited when she saw the seaweed. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:42
She's found a use for it all right. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
-What would that be, I wonder? -Go and see. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
Yeah. Come on, Salty. This could be interesting. Ta-ta. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
Yeah. Come on, girl. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:52
Oh, look at that, Salty! | 0:12:54 | 0:12:56
Our very own Em has become the seaweed queen of Staithes. | 0:12:56 | 0:13:01
Enough of your teasing, Jack! | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
This seaweed is very useful, I'll have you know. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
Especially if you can't rely on seagulls. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
Tell us what it's useful for. We can't wait to hear, can we, Salty? | 0:13:08 | 0:13:13
-Well, I can use it for forecasting the weather. -Oh! | 0:13:13 | 0:13:17
When the seaweed's moist, it means it's going to rain. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:22
But when it's dry, it'll be dry all day. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
-Oh, your luck's in! It's dry! -So now you've got the seaweed, | 0:13:25 | 0:13:30
you don't need the seagulls to forecast the weather. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:33
Ooo, I don't know about that. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:35
This seaweed doesn't half smell fishy! | 0:13:35 | 0:13:39
Yeah? Ooo, yes! Ooo, yeah! | 0:13:39 | 0:13:41
Come on, Salty, let's get home. Ha-ha! | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
-Ta-ta, Em! -Ta-ta! | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45
