SEAGULLS CRY | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
Oh, Salty, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
do you have to carry that smelly blanket round with you everywhere? | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
Honestly, it is a bit smelly. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
-HE SNIFFS -In fact, it is very smelly. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:51
SEAGULL SCREECHES | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
Oh. Ooh. Well, come on. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
Perhaps Emily won't notice the smell. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
Poo! Dear me. Oh! | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
-Hello, Emily! A good washing day. -It is, it is. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
Oh, poo, what's that terrible smell? | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
Oh, it's Salty's blanket. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
-It's a bit dirty and it's very whiffy. -I'll say. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
Now then, young Salty, see that seagull up there, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
it's been winking at me all morning. And you know what they say - | 0:02:20 | 0:02:25
when a seagull winks an eye, hang your washing out to dry. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
-Oh, right. -So I've decided today is going to be laundry day. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:35
I think Emily is offering to wash your blanket, Salty. That's it. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
-Oh, hey! -Oh, Salty! | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
-Come here. -It needs to be washed, Salty! | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
Oh, honestly! | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
-Salty! -Salty! | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
JACK WHISTLES | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
Oh! Go on, go on. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
Salty! | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
-Oh, there she is, Jack. -Salty! | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
Salty. Salty, girl, come here. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
Yes. Where have you hidden that blanket? Heh, heh? | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
Let me see. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
EMILY GASPS | 0:03:31 | 0:03:32
-What? -Blanket ahoy. -Well done, Emily. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
Er, Jack, why don't you go down to the Rainbow and take Salty | 0:03:36 | 0:03:41
and I'll carry on looking for the blanket(!) | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
What a good idea! We will see you later, Em. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
Come along, Salty. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
Right, time to wash that old thing. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
There she is, the Rainbow. What have you got for us today, my dear? | 0:04:02 | 0:04:08
SHIP'S HORN SOUNDS | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
-Hey-hey. Come on, Salty. -HE HUMS A TUNE | 0:04:10 | 0:04:15
Here we are. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
Good girl, Salty, in your bed, go on, that's it. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
You curl up in there. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
And we won't mention smelly blankets, will we, heh? | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
HE CHUCKLES | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
Although I do remember the last time your blanket was really stinky. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:40
Oh! Do you? Poo! | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
Right, let me get the comfortable and I'll tell you the story. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
Ah, yes, Salty, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
this'll make your whiskers whiffle, this one will. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
Once upon a twinkly time, the Rainbow set off from Staithes, | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon. | 0:04:55 | 0:05:00
It was a breezy day | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
and a rather whiffy smell was wafting on the wind. Poo! | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
Despite that, Salty and I started to sing. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:10
# Just Salty dog and me Upon the briny sea | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
# The wind is keen The waves are high | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
# There isn't a cloud up in the sky | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
# And although something's stinking At least we're not sinking | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
# Just Salty Dog and me # Hey! | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
"Right, Salty," I said, "let's find out what's causing that smell | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
"and throw it overboard." | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
I followed the smell, all around the deck | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
and it led me to Salty's bed and Salty's blanket. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
SALTY WHIMPERS | 0:05:40 | 0:05:41
Now, Salty's blanket is her favourite thing. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
But, sometimes, it gets very whiffy and it needs to be washed. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:49
"Come on," I said, "let's dunk it in the sea." | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
I tied the blanket to a rope | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
and threw it overboard, where it swished through the waves | 0:05:55 | 0:05:59
as the ship skimmed along. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
Things were fine for a while, | 0:06:01 | 0:06:03
when, suddenly, I heard the ship's emergency bell ringing. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
Clang, clang, clang! And it was Salty who was ringing it. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:11
BELL RINGS | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
"What is the matter, Salty, my girl?" I said. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
-IMITATES SALTY HOWLING -"Look," she howled. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
And she pointed a paw to the stern. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
Oh, dearie me, there was the rope, swishing through the water, | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
but there was no blanket tied to it. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
Salty's blanket had gone. "Don't panic," I said. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
"We will just have to go and look for it." | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
And before you could say "scuttling spider crabs", | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
we were under the sea. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
Well, we hadn't gone far when Mr and Mrs Cod swam up to us. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
"Ask if they've come to help us with the tug-of-war, Harold," | 0:06:46 | 0:06:50
said Mrs Cod. "Yes, dear," said Mr Cod. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
But before he could say another word, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
Mrs Cod nudged me with her nose. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
"You can be the referee," she told me. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
"And you, she said, rolling her eyes at Salty, | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
"you can help to pull the rope." | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
"Actually, we're looking for a blanket," I said. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
"You haven't seen it, have you?" | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
"Have we seen a blanket, Harold?" Mrs Cod asked her husband. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:17
Mr Cod said, "Yes, dear." | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
"I think, hm, we've seen it somewhere," said Mrs Cod. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
"There isn't time to look for it. The tug-of-war is about to begin." | 0:07:22 | 0:07:27
Before we knew it, I was on the referee's spot | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
and Salty was standing in line behind the tigerfish. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:34
Soon, lots of other sea creatures had taken their places behind Salty. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:39
Angela, the anglerfish, she came with her lantern dangling. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:43
Nicola the pufferfish, she arrived. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
She puffed herself up to her fullest size. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
Next came Percy, the pipefish, and the two blobfish. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
And even a couple of sea horses bobbed up | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
and took their places in the line. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
The tigerfish called out, "We can't win, | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
"we do this every year and every year, we lose." | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
Well, Salty and I, we were a little surprised. "Why is that?" I asked. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:12
"Because we are playing against him," said the tigerfish, | 0:08:12 | 0:08:17
pointing at a huge creature that was approaching. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
"Blistering barnacles," I exclaimed. "It's Bluey the blue whale." | 0:08:21 | 0:08:26
"Hello, everyone," he called, swishing his enormous tail, | 0:08:26 | 0:08:31
"lovely to see you again." | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
Well, Salty buried her head in her paws. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
"It's not fair," she whined, "we'll never win, we don't have a chance." | 0:08:37 | 0:08:42
"Remember, the one left holding the rope | 0:08:42 | 0:08:45
"wins the tug-of-war trophy," said Mrs Cod. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
"Right, Harold, give the referee the hooter." | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
Mr Cod swam up to me with a little horn. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:56
And I blew it. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
And the tug-of-war began. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
Everyone picked up the rope and started to pull. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:07
"Come on," cried the tigerfish. "Heave-ho!" | 0:09:07 | 0:09:12
But there was something unusual about the rope. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:18
It didn't really look very rope-like. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
It was slightly woollier than a rope should be | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
and it was a little, hm, smelly. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
Salty gave the rope a sniff and let out a howl. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:33
HE IMITATES SALTY HOWLING | 0:09:33 | 0:09:35
"It's not a rope, it's my blanket! It must have come loose | 0:09:35 | 0:09:39
"when we were dragging it and then it sank to the bottom of the sea. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:44
"That's why the tug-of-war team have it now." | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
So Salty started to pull extra hard. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
She wasn't worried about winning the tug-of-war trophy, | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
but she was worried that Bluey the whale might keep her blanket. | 0:09:55 | 0:10:00
So, she started tugging. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
"Heave-ho, heave-ho." | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
"I can't keep going," cried Angela, the anglerfish, | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
"my strength has run out." | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
"Us, too, said the two blobfish and they let go. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:16
"Heave-ho! Heave-ho!" | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
"My fins ache, they feel like they are going to fall off," | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
cried the tigerfish. "I'm going to have to let go, too." | 0:10:23 | 0:10:27
Everyone was tiring. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:29
Bluey the whale had such a powerful grip. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:34
And soon, it was only Salty who was left tugging at the blanket. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:40
"Come on, Salty, you can do it," I cried. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
"Come on, heave-ho, hold on to your blanket. Don't let go! | 0:10:42 | 0:10:47
"Good girl, go on!" | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
Bluey the whale was super-strong, | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
but Salty just wouldn't give up on her blanket, | 0:10:51 | 0:10:55
for dogs are very attached to their blankets, | 0:10:55 | 0:10:58
as you probably know. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:00
And with one more enormous tug, she pulled it free | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
from Bluey's grip. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
"Hurray! We have a winner," I cried. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:11
"Salty's won the tug-of-war." | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
"Well done, cried Bluey, "what fun. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
"Who'd have thought that a little dog would be so strong?" | 0:11:16 | 0:11:21
"Congratulations," said Mrs Cod. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
And she gave Salty the tug-of-war trophy. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
Salty said that her underwater friends could keep the trophy, | 0:11:27 | 0:11:31
all she wanted was her blanket. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
"Your blanket?" said Mrs Cod. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
"Well, I never. I told you it was strange rope, didn't I, Harold?" | 0:11:38 | 0:11:42
Mr Cod nodded. "Yes, dear," he said. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:46
I turned to Salty. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:48
"Time to be getting home now," Salty, my girl, I said. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:52
Before you could say "jiggling jellyfish", | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
Salty and I were back on board the Rainbow. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
"You know, I never knew you were so strong, Salty," I chuckled. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:03
-After all that time in the water... -HE SNIFFS | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
..cor, your blanket isn't stinking any more! | 0:12:06 | 0:12:10
-Is it? No. -HE CHUCKLES | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
Well, we both laughed as we set our course for Staithes and home. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:18
Do you like that story, Salty? All true, of course! | 0:12:27 | 0:12:31
Mind you, my stories always are. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:33
HE CHUCKLES | 0:12:33 | 0:12:35
Oh, look! See that? | 0:12:35 | 0:12:40
Come on. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:41
Listen, Salty, I've got a confession to make. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
While we were away, Emily washed your blanket. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:55
HE LAUGHS | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
That's not it, is it? | 0:12:57 | 0:12:59
Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:03
Oh, that's not your blanket. That's too small. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
It must have shrunk in the wash. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
Well, at least it will be easy to carry around | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
and probably smell a lot better. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:14
-Hello, you two. -Hello. -You all right? -Well... | 0:13:14 | 0:13:18
I've washed the blanket and it's dry, too. Here you are, Salty. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:23
Well, what's that? | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
It's one of my tea towels, why do you ask? | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
For a minute, I thought it was Salty's blanket, shrunk in the wash. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:34
I wouldn't shrink Salty's blanket! I know how precious it is. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:38
What a relief! There you are, Salty. Look at that. Yes. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:42
It smells lovely. You're a very lucky dog. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
Say thank you to Ems. That's it. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
-You know, you saved the day, you have. -My pleasure. -Thank you. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
-Come on, Salty. Thanks again, Em. -Bye now! -Bye-bye. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:55
We were getting really worried about that! | 0:13:55 | 0:13:58
