There we go, Salty. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
-Oh, don't sit there. -What? Haha! | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
My ray of sunshine, what's the matter? | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
-Sorry, this chair is broken. I was waiting for Sam to fix it. -Oh, I see. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:54
-Have this chair. -I could have came a cropper there, couldn't I, Salty? | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
-How's my favourite fisherman? -All the better for seeing you, my dear. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
This calls for my reading glasses, doesn't it? | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
Hello to you too, Salty, my lovely! | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
She's always pleased to see you. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
Doesn't do that for everybody. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
You're both my special friends. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
-So what can I get for you today? -I know. A cake. A lemon twinkle cake. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
-The one with the sugary stars. My favourites! -Ooh, Jack. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
I've run out of lemon twinkles. I'm sorry. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
-Never mind. I'll have a cup of tea. -I'll fetch it straightaway. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
-With perhaps a little dog biscuit on the side? -Wooh! Wooh! Wooh! | 0:02:30 | 0:02:35
-Jack! -Hello. -Hello, Salty. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
Are you stopping? | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
-Well, I was looking for you. -Why, what's the matter? -Here. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:45
That's a light bulb. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
For your ship's lamp. It wasn't working yesterday. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
Yes. The bulb's blown. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
We can't have you setting off without your lamp. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
Thank you. I'll fit it, as soon as I've had my tea. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
-Always glad to help. Now, if you need me to... -Oh, Ernie! | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
-That chair is broken. -So I see. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
-Perhaps I'll pop it over to Sam. -You'll need that bit as well. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:11
-Aye. Cheerio, Jack. -Yes. -Ooh! | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
There you go. A nice cup of tea, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
one sugar, just the way you like it, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
-and a dog biscuit on the side. -Thank you. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
And Salty says thank you as well. Don't you? Here you are. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
Oh, I found some lemon twinkles. Pop by later and I'll have a cake. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
You are always looking out for me, Shelly. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
I'll drink this, and then I'll be off to the Rainbow. Thank you. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
There she is, the Rainbow. What have you got for us today, my dear? | 0:03:48 | 0:03:53
Heh-hey! Come along, Salty. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
HE HUMS | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
Good girl. In your bed. Good girl. Go on, Salty. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
Now, then, let's see if I can fit | 0:04:14 | 0:04:18
this fiddly little lamp bulb in here. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
I'm going to need my reading glasses for this. Now, where did I put them? | 0:04:21 | 0:04:27
Eh? Have you seen them, Salty? | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
I'm going to have to look after my glasses better than this. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
Do you remember when we got this lamp? | 0:04:33 | 0:04:38
It was after that really stormy voyage we had. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:42
Let me think... Yeah. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
Once upon a twinkly time, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
the Rainbow set out from Staithes, | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
waved goodbye to Whitby, and disappeared over the horizon. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
It was a bit of an overcast sort of a day, | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
and as we sailed along, we sang. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
# Just Salty dog and me | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
# Sailing away on the sea | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
# We're going to have a lovely day | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
# Even though the sky is grey | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
# We'll sing and we'll smile for a nautical mile | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18
# Just Salty dog and me. # | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
Yeah, well, we'd sailed happily for many hours, until the wind | 0:05:21 | 0:05:27
suddenly turned, and we ran into a storm to shake you to your cockles. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:33
Salty here has never been one for thunderstorms, have you? | 0:05:33 | 0:05:37
No, no - doesn't like 'em. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
And this storm was not one for the fainthearted. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
The skies darkened, the wind was northerly, blowing fit to bust, | 0:05:43 | 0:05:48
whipping the waves into tall towers as big as a man. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:53
As big as a bus! Waves that were as big as a house! | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
And poor Rainbow... | 0:05:57 | 0:05:58
didn't know what had hit her. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
One moment, perching high on the crest, | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
and then plummeting down like a rollercoaster. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
Up and down, we hurtled, crashing through the foam. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:11
Of course, Salty wanted us to head back to harbour. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
In fact, she hates storms so much, | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
she suggested selling the Rainbow, | 0:06:17 | 0:06:21
and using the money to buy a dog biscuit factory. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:25
But just as poor Salty was thinking that she'd never see land again, | 0:06:25 | 0:06:30
through the raging waves, we heard the most beautiful sound. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:35
WOMAN SINGS | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
Clear and gentle, it just cut through the storm. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:43
Yes, it was the song of our mermaid friend, Pearl, | 0:06:43 | 0:06:49
perched at the very tip of a wave. "Yoo-hoo!" called the mermaid. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:55
And with a flip of her fabulous tail, Pearl dived through | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
the tower of water and popped up in front of the Rainbow. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
Just like that. "Don't worry, Jack," she called, "I'll get you home! | 0:07:03 | 0:07:10
"I have the perfect solution." | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
From deep in the ocean, Pearl summoned her friend, Angela, | 0:07:13 | 0:07:19
the angler fish. She was beautifully spoken and really quite shy. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:24
"Me," she gasped, "you want me to help? How thrilling! | 0:07:24 | 0:07:30
"Nobody's ever asked me to help before, ever." | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
Which is quite surprising, really, as angler fish | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
have a built-in head lantern, which must come in very useful | 0:07:36 | 0:07:41
in the dark depths of the sea. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
Pearl asked Angela if we might use | 0:07:44 | 0:07:46
her lantern to light our way across | 0:07:46 | 0:07:48
the ocean, and the kind angler fish was only too happy to oblige. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:53
So, with Angela and her lantern swimming ahead of the Rainbow | 0:07:53 | 0:07:58
with Pearl, they were able to lead us through the dark waves. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:02
We were sailing along quite well now, considering the storm, | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
when all at once, there was the most almighty crack of lightning. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:11
Pearl and Angela dived below, | 0:08:11 | 0:08:13
while Salty and I, we were thrown off our feet. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
We lay quivering on the deck, didn't we, girl? | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
Then we heard a creak... | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
and a groan... | 0:08:22 | 0:08:23
and a crash! | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
And when we looked up, | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
the Rainbow's mast had broken in two, | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
and on top of that, the lightning had bust our boiler. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
Now the engine was no good at all. How were we going to sail home? | 0:08:36 | 0:08:43
I looked for Pearl, but she was lost in the salty spray. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:48
We were alone, stuck in the middle of a raging ocean, | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
with a broken mast and a busted engine. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:56
And if that wasn't enough, the Rainbow gave a sudden lurch, | 0:08:56 | 0:09:01
as if we'd hit land, but there was no land to be seen. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:05
I rushed over to look over the side, and blow my britches, | 0:09:05 | 0:09:10
the boat gave another lurch. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:13
And then slowly, slowly, we began to rise, upwards and upwards, | 0:09:13 | 0:09:19
until the Rainbow was high above the waves. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
What was going on? | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
Then we heard Pearl's voice, | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
calling us from down below in the sea. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:31
"Hold on tight, Jack and Salty! You are going for a ride." | 0:09:31 | 0:09:36
A ride? | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
"Welcome aboard," announced a big, rumbly voice. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:45
Our friend... | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
Bluey, the blue whale, had come to our rescue, again. Ha! | 0:09:47 | 0:09:53
Bluey swam up beneath the Rainbow and lifted us | 0:09:53 | 0:09:57
high into the air on his back. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
We were hitching a ride on the back of a whale! | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
Just imagine the procession | 0:10:04 | 0:10:06
that crossed the stormy ocean that day. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
By teatime, we were reaching land. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
You can imagine how pleased Salty was to see Staithes in the distance. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:19
Bluey the whale - he began to slow down as we drew near. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:23
He explained that he couldn't go any closer to the land, | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
or he would get stuck on the sandbanks. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
Now, it was time for one final surprise. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:34
"Hold onto your hats," chuckled the whale. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:39
As Salty was trying to explain that she doesn't wear a hat, | 0:10:39 | 0:10:43
Bluey took in a massive suck of water, | 0:10:43 | 0:10:48
and then he spurted a huge fountain out of his blowhole. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:53
And the Rainbow, with us in it, | 0:10:53 | 0:10:55
flew high into the air on the spout of water, | 0:10:55 | 0:10:58
so high that we took off, we turned a somersault, | 0:10:58 | 0:11:02
and came neatly to land | 0:11:02 | 0:11:04
just beside the harbour wall. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
And as he set out to sea, | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
Bluey let out another fountain of water, by way of goodbye. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:13
Ho-ho! Bye-bye! | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
And as we squinted into the sunset, | 0:11:16 | 0:11:18
we just caught a flash of Angela's lantern, | 0:11:18 | 0:11:22
and a glimpse of Pearl's tail, as they disappeared | 0:11:22 | 0:11:26
into the wide ocean. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:28
Salty and I heaved a huge sigh of relief. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:34
We were home again. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
TOOT! | 0:11:39 | 0:11:40 | |
You like that story, Salty? All true, of course. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:48
Mind you, my stories always are. Ha-ha! | 0:11:48 | 0:11:52
Oh, look! | 0:11:52 | 0:11:56
Come on. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
You know, Salty, we never did find | 0:12:08 | 0:12:10
those reading glasses, did we? | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
-You haven't eaten them, have you? Ha-ha! -Ah, back again, Jack? | 0:12:12 | 0:12:17
Hey, you can have the honour of testing out the fixed chair. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:22
You quite sure it's not going to break again? | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
Huh... | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
Oh, very good, yeah. Well done, Ernie. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
Only glad to help. Hey, did you get your ship's lamp fixed? | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
-No. I seem to have mislaid my glasses. -Oh, well. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:41
-I'll keep my eye out for them. See you later, Jack. -Bye for now. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:46
Go and sit. Sit down. Go on. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:48
-Ah! -One lemon twinkle cake, | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
-with extra stars, for my favourite customer. -Oh, Shelly Periwinkle! | 0:12:51 | 0:12:55
-You are the light of my life. -SALTY WHINES | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58
Yes, and you, of course. Sit down. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
What more can a man ask for than a kind friend, a faithful dog, | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
and a lemon twinkle cake? | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
-Yeah. Except perhaps... -Your glasses? | 0:13:07 | 0:13:12
-My glasses! -You left them here earlier. -Oh, Shelly! | 0:13:12 | 0:13:16
I mean, what would I do without you, eh? | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
D'you know, it's almost as if you were magic. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
Oh! Oh, Jack! | 0:13:22 | 0:13:24
You and your imagination! JACK LAUGHS | 0:13:24 | 0:13:28
Look at that little cakey. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
Beautiful. Ha-ha! | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
Well, Salty, that's it for today. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
We'll see all our friends again next time. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:50
Oh! And we'll see YOU next time, as well. Bye-bye. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:56
Come on, girl. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:58
