There we go, Salty.

0:01:390:01:41

-Oh, don't sit there.

-What? Haha!

0:01:440:01:46

My ray of sunshine, what's the matter?

0:01:460:01:49

-Sorry, this chair is broken. I was waiting for Sam to fix it.

-Oh, I see.

0:01:490:01:54

-Have this chair.

-I could have came a cropper there, couldn't I, Salty?

0:01:540:01:58

-How's my favourite fisherman?

-All the better for seeing you, my dear.

0:01:580:02:02

This calls for my reading glasses, doesn't it?

0:02:020:02:05

Hello to you too, Salty, my lovely!

0:02:050:02:08

She's always pleased to see you.

0:02:080:02:10

Doesn't do that for everybody.

0:02:100:02:12

You're both my special friends.

0:02:120:02:15

-So what can I get for you today?

-I know. A cake. A lemon twinkle cake.

0:02:150:02:19

-The one with the sugary stars. My favourites!

-Ooh, Jack.

0:02:190:02:23

I've run out of lemon twinkles. I'm sorry.

0:02:230:02:26

-Never mind. I'll have a cup of tea.

-I'll fetch it straightaway.

0:02:260:02:30

-With perhaps a little dog biscuit on the side?

-Wooh! Wooh! Wooh!

0:02:300:02:35

-Jack!

-Hello.

-Hello, Salty.

0:02:360:02:38

Are you stopping?

0:02:380:02:40

-Well, I was looking for you.

-Why, what's the matter?

-Here.

0:02:400:02:45

That's a light bulb.

0:02:450:02:47

For your ship's lamp. It wasn't working yesterday.

0:02:470:02:49

Yes. The bulb's blown.

0:02:490:02:51

We can't have you setting off without your lamp.

0:02:510:02:54

Thank you. I'll fit it, as soon as I've had my tea.

0:02:540:02:57

-Always glad to help. Now, if you need me to...

-Oh, Ernie!

0:02:570:03:00

-That chair is broken.

-So I see.

0:03:030:03:06

-Perhaps I'll pop it over to Sam.

-You'll need that bit as well.

0:03:060:03:11

-Aye. Cheerio, Jack.

-Yes.

-Ooh!

0:03:110:03:15

There you go. A nice cup of tea,

0:03:150:03:17

one sugar, just the way you like it,

0:03:170:03:20

-and a dog biscuit on the side.

-Thank you.

0:03:200:03:23

And Salty says thank you as well. Don't you? Here you are.

0:03:230:03:27

Oh, I found some lemon twinkles. Pop by later and I'll have a cake.

0:03:270:03:31

You are always looking out for me, Shelly.

0:03:310:03:34

I'll drink this, and then I'll be off to the Rainbow. Thank you.

0:03:340:03:37

There she is, the Rainbow. What have you got for us today, my dear?

0:03:480:03:53

Heh-hey! Come along, Salty.

0:03:550:03:57

HE HUMS

0:03:570:04:01

Good girl. In your bed. Good girl. Go on, Salty.

0:04:110:04:14

Now, then, let's see if I can fit

0:04:140:04:18

this fiddly little lamp bulb in here.

0:04:180:04:21

I'm going to need my reading glasses for this. Now, where did I put them?

0:04:210:04:27

Eh? Have you seen them, Salty?

0:04:270:04:29

I'm going to have to look after my glasses better than this.

0:04:290:04:33

Do you remember when we got this lamp?

0:04:330:04:38

It was after that really stormy voyage we had.

0:04:380:04:42

Let me think... Yeah.

0:04:420:04:46

Once upon a twinkly time,

0:04:460:04:48

the Rainbow set out from Staithes,

0:04:480:04:51

waved goodbye to Whitby, and disappeared over the horizon.

0:04:510:04:55

It was a bit of an overcast sort of a day,

0:04:570:05:00

and as we sailed along, we sang.

0:05:000:05:03

# Just Salty dog and me

0:05:030:05:06

# Sailing away on the sea

0:05:060:05:08

# We're going to have a lovely day

0:05:080:05:11

# Even though the sky is grey

0:05:110:05:14

# We'll sing and we'll smile for a nautical mile

0:05:140:05:18

# Just Salty dog and me. #

0:05:180:05:21

Yeah, well, we'd sailed happily for many hours, until the wind

0:05:210:05:27

suddenly turned, and we ran into a storm to shake you to your cockles.

0:05:270:05:33

Salty here has never been one for thunderstorms, have you?

0:05:330:05:37

No, no - doesn't like 'em.

0:05:370:05:39

And this storm was not one for the fainthearted.

0:05:390:05:43

The skies darkened, the wind was northerly, blowing fit to bust,

0:05:430:05:48

whipping the waves into tall towers as big as a man.

0:05:480:05:53

As big as a bus! Waves that were as big as a house!

0:05:530:05:57

And poor Rainbow...

0:05:570:05:58

didn't know what had hit her.

0:05:580:06:00

One moment, perching high on the crest,

0:06:000:06:03

and then plummeting down like a rollercoaster.

0:06:030:06:07

Up and down, we hurtled, crashing through the foam.

0:06:070:06:11

Of course, Salty wanted us to head back to harbour.

0:06:110:06:14

In fact, she hates storms so much,

0:06:140:06:17

she suggested selling the Rainbow,

0:06:170:06:21

and using the money to buy a dog biscuit factory.

0:06:210:06:25

But just as poor Salty was thinking that she'd never see land again,

0:06:250:06:30

through the raging waves, we heard the most beautiful sound.

0:06:300:06:35

WOMAN SINGS

0:06:350:06:38

Clear and gentle, it just cut through the storm.

0:06:380:06:43

Yes, it was the song of our mermaid friend, Pearl,

0:06:430:06:49

perched at the very tip of a wave. "Yoo-hoo!" called the mermaid.

0:06:490:06:55

And with a flip of her fabulous tail, Pearl dived through

0:06:550:06:59

the tower of water and popped up in front of the Rainbow.

0:06:590:07:03

Just like that. "Don't worry, Jack," she called, "I'll get you home!

0:07:030:07:10

"I have the perfect solution."

0:07:100:07:13

From deep in the ocean, Pearl summoned her friend, Angela,

0:07:130:07:19

the angler fish. She was beautifully spoken and really quite shy.

0:07:190:07:24

"Me," she gasped, "you want me to help? How thrilling!

0:07:240:07:30

"Nobody's ever asked me to help before, ever."

0:07:300:07:33

Which is quite surprising, really, as angler fish

0:07:330:07:36

have a built-in head lantern, which must come in very useful

0:07:360:07:41

in the dark depths of the sea.

0:07:410:07:44

Pearl asked Angela if we might use

0:07:440:07:46

her lantern to light our way across

0:07:460:07:48

the ocean, and the kind angler fish was only too happy to oblige.

0:07:480:07:53

So, with Angela and her lantern swimming ahead of the Rainbow

0:07:530:07:58

with Pearl, they were able to lead us through the dark waves.

0:07:580:08:02

We were sailing along quite well now, considering the storm,

0:08:020:08:06

when all at once, there was the most almighty crack of lightning.

0:08:060:08:11

Pearl and Angela dived below,

0:08:110:08:13

while Salty and I, we were thrown off our feet.

0:08:130:08:17

We lay quivering on the deck, didn't we, girl?

0:08:170:08:20

Then we heard a creak...

0:08:200:08:22

and a groan...

0:08:220:08:23

and a crash!

0:08:230:08:25

And when we looked up,

0:08:250:08:27

the Rainbow's mast had broken in two,

0:08:270:08:30

and on top of that, the lightning had bust our boiler.

0:08:300:08:34

Now the engine was no good at all. How were we going to sail home?

0:08:360:08:43

I looked for Pearl, but she was lost in the salty spray.

0:08:430:08:48

We were alone, stuck in the middle of a raging ocean,

0:08:480:08:52

with a broken mast and a busted engine.

0:08:520:08:56

And if that wasn't enough, the Rainbow gave a sudden lurch,

0:08:560:09:01

as if we'd hit land, but there was no land to be seen.

0:09:010:09:05

I rushed over to look over the side, and blow my britches,

0:09:050:09:10

the boat gave another lurch.

0:09:100:09:13

And then slowly, slowly, we began to rise, upwards and upwards,

0:09:130:09:19

until the Rainbow was high above the waves.

0:09:190:09:23

What was going on?

0:09:230:09:25

Then we heard Pearl's voice,

0:09:250:09:27

calling us from down below in the sea.

0:09:270:09:31

"Hold on tight, Jack and Salty! You are going for a ride."

0:09:310:09:36

A ride?

0:09:360:09:39

"Welcome aboard," announced a big, rumbly voice.

0:09:390:09:45

Our friend...

0:09:450:09:47

Bluey, the blue whale, had come to our rescue, again. Ha!

0:09:470:09:53

Bluey swam up beneath the Rainbow and lifted us

0:09:530:09:57

high into the air on his back.

0:09:570:10:00

We were hitching a ride on the back of a whale!

0:10:000:10:04

Just imagine the procession

0:10:040:10:06

that crossed the stormy ocean that day.

0:10:060:10:10

By teatime, we were reaching land.

0:10:100:10:14

You can imagine how pleased Salty was to see Staithes in the distance.

0:10:140:10:19

Bluey the whale - he began to slow down as we drew near.

0:10:190:10:23

He explained that he couldn't go any closer to the land,

0:10:230:10:26

or he would get stuck on the sandbanks.

0:10:260:10:30

Now, it was time for one final surprise.

0:10:300:10:34

"Hold onto your hats," chuckled the whale.

0:10:350:10:39

As Salty was trying to explain that she doesn't wear a hat,

0:10:390:10:43

Bluey took in a massive suck of water,

0:10:430:10:48

and then he spurted a huge fountain out of his blowhole.

0:10:480:10:53

And the Rainbow, with us in it,

0:10:530:10:55

flew high into the air on the spout of water,

0:10:550:10:58

so high that we took off, we turned a somersault,

0:10:580:11:02

and came neatly to land

0:11:020:11:04

just beside the harbour wall.

0:11:040:11:06

And as he set out to sea,

0:11:060:11:08

Bluey let out another fountain of water, by way of goodbye.

0:11:080:11:13

Ho-ho! Bye-bye!

0:11:130:11:16

And as we squinted into the sunset,

0:11:160:11:18

we just caught a flash of Angela's lantern,

0:11:180:11:22

and a glimpse of Pearl's tail, as they disappeared

0:11:220:11:26

into the wide ocean.

0:11:260:11:28

Salty and I heaved a huge sigh of relief.

0:11:280:11:34

We were home again.

0:11:340:11:36

TOOT!

0:11:390:11:40

You like that story, Salty? All true, of course.

0:11:430:11:48

Mind you, my stories always are. Ha-ha!

0:11:480:11:52

Oh, look!

0:11:520:11:56

Come on.

0:11:560:11:58

You know, Salty, we never did find

0:12:080:12:10

those reading glasses, did we?

0:12:100:12:12

-You haven't eaten them, have you? Ha-ha!

-Ah, back again, Jack?

0:12:120:12:17

Hey, you can have the honour of testing out the fixed chair.

0:12:170:12:22

You quite sure it's not going to break again?

0:12:220:12:25

Huh...

0:12:250:12:27

Oh, very good, yeah. Well done, Ernie.

0:12:300:12:34

Only glad to help. Hey, did you get your ship's lamp fixed?

0:12:340:12:37

-No. I seem to have mislaid my glasses.

-Oh, well.

0:12:370:12:41

-I'll keep my eye out for them. See you later, Jack.

-Bye for now.

0:12:410:12:46

Go and sit. Sit down. Go on.

0:12:460:12:48

-Ah!

-One lemon twinkle cake,

0:12:480:12:51

-with extra stars, for my favourite customer.

-Oh, Shelly Periwinkle!

0:12:510:12:55

-You are the light of my life.

-SALTY WHINES

0:12:550:12:58

Yes, and you, of course. Sit down.

0:12:580:13:01

What more can a man ask for than a kind friend, a faithful dog,

0:13:010:13:05

and a lemon twinkle cake?

0:13:050:13:07

-Yeah. Except perhaps...

-Your glasses?

0:13:070:13:12

-My glasses!

-You left them here earlier.

-Oh, Shelly!

0:13:120:13:16

I mean, what would I do without you, eh?

0:13:160:13:19

D'you know, it's almost as if you were magic.

0:13:190:13:22

Oh! Oh, Jack!

0:13:220:13:24

You and your imagination! JACK LAUGHS

0:13:240:13:28

Look at that little cakey.

0:13:300:13:32

Beautiful. Ha-ha!

0:13:340:13:36

Well, Salty, that's it for today.

0:13:450:13:48

We'll see all our friends again next time.

0:13:480:13:50

Oh! And we'll see YOU next time, as well. Bye-bye.

0:13:500:13:56

Come on, girl.
