Right now, Salty, we've got to buy some fish for supper | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
and then get down to the Rainbow and polish the moon lantern. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
That's the lamp we use on a dark night | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
when there's no moon at all. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
Do you remember? Yes. Course you do. Good girl. Come on, then. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:54
-Morning, Ernie. -Oh, morning, Jack. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
Salty and I would like a nice bit of fish for our supper. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
-Ah, that could be a problem. -Oh? | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
Yes, we're closed for the day. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
Oh, that's a shame. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:09
I tell you what - I'll put you a nice piece of cod to one side. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:14
-After the delivery. -What delivery? What... | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
-Eggs. -Oh? | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
They're for Sam. She loves eggs. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
And these beauties were laid by Emily's chickens. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
-I said I'd take 'em over. -Is that why you're closing up? | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
-Egg-xactly! -Oh! | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
Whoa, whoa, whoa! | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
-Oh, dear. -Thank you. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
Why don't you come with me, help me look after them? | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
Yes, I think you might need help. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
Come on, Salty, we'll keep an eye on him. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
I mean, it's not that I'm clumsy or anything. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
-Dustbin! -It's just that when I've got an important job to do... | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
Football! | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
-Elephant! -Elephant? | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
No, I'm sorry. I made it up! | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
Paving stone. Oh! | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
-Oh! Thank you, Jack. -Yes, no problem. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
Look, there's Sam over there. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
Yeah. Listen, I've got to polish the moon lantern today. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
Do you think you can get those eggs safely to Sam there? | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
-Oh, yes. -Good. Well, I'll see you later. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
Those little egg boxes will be safe now. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
It's not THESE egg boxes I'm worried about. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
-It's the other 20 I've got to deliver. -You're kidding? Good luck! | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
Whoops-a-daisy, Ernie. Steady now. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
Come on, Salty, back to the Rainbow. Oh, dear. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
There she is. The Rainbow. What have you got for us today, my dear? | 0:03:41 | 0:03:46
HOOTER | 0:03:46 | 0:03:47
Hey, come on, Salty. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:50
HE HUMS | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
Here we are. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
Come on, Salty, go in your bed. Good girl. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
You curl up in there while I find this moon lantern. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
There it is. There you are! | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
Here, Ernie's certainly got his hands full with those eggs. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
Hoo-hoo! | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
Do you know what? This moon lantern | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
makes me recall an adventure we had involving eggs. Do you remember? | 0:04:22 | 0:04:27
Yes. Let me get comfortable and I'll tell you the story. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:33
Oh, yes, Salty. This will make your whiskers whiffle, this one will. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:38
Once upon a twinkly time, the Rainbow set off from Staithes, | 0:04:38 | 0:04:43
waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:48
We sailed into the night and as we sailed, we sang. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:52
-# Just Salty Dog and me -HOOTER | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
-# Upon the briny sea -HOOTER | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
# The moon is round and full tonight | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
# It's casting out a silvery light | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
# And the waves seem to glimmer and sparkle and shimmer | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
# For Salty Dog and me. # | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
HOOTER | 0:05:08 | 0:05:09
On the horizon we spied the silvery blue silhouette of a ship. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:14
"Uh-oh," I cried. "That looks to me like the Hurly-Burly." | 0:05:14 | 0:05:19
Now, in case you don't already know, the Hurly-Burly is a pirate ship | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
and it belongs to Kitty Cutlass, the trickiest pirate to sail the seas. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:29
"Ahoy, me old diamonds!" cried Kitty, | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
bringing the Hurly-Burly up alongside. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
"And what might you two be doing on this beautiful evening?" | 0:05:35 | 0:05:40
"Well, Kitty, we were thinking of going for an underwater walk," | 0:05:40 | 0:05:45
says I. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:46
"I'm coming, too," cried Kitty, | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
"because I've heard that there are stars at the bottom of the sea | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
"and I want to find them." | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
And before you could say, "Limboing lobsters," | 0:05:55 | 0:05:59
we were all under the waves. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
Well, as we wandered along, a creature swam over. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:06
She had a huge leathery body | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09
that was shaped like a giant bicycle helmet | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
and her front flippers were very large. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:16
"I am a leatherback turtle," she told us. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
"Nice to meet you," I said. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
"Kitty here has heard that there are stars at the bottom of the sea, | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
"so we thought we'd try and find some." | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
"Oh, yes," said the turtle. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
"There are lots of stars I could show you but I can't be too long. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:35
"I've laid my eggs on an island not far from here." | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
Salty didn't know that turtles laid eggs. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
"Oh, we do," replied the turtle. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
"They're buried safely in the sand but they'll be hatching soon. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:49
"Then my baby turtles find their way to the sea | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
"by the light of the moon." | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
"How many eggs have you laid?" I asked. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
"127," replied the turtle. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
"Turtles have big families," said Salty. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
"Come on, come on, we're supposed to be searching for stars," said Kitty. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:10
We soon found ourselves in an underwater jungly place | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
where a huge mountain loomed | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
and strange, frondy plants waggled and waved in the water. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
"Look at that mountain," I said. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
"It's a volcano, actually," said the turtle. "Isn't it magnificent?" | 0:07:24 | 0:07:29
We all stopped to admire it for it was indeed magnificent. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
"Your sea stars are just here," said the turtle, | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
pointing a flipper at a large rock. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
"Oh, tickle me dimples! Look how many there are," | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
cried Kitty greedily. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
And, sure enough, the rock was covered | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
in crowds of different-coloured, beautiful, bumpy stars. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:51
"Treasure!" cried Kitty | 0:07:51 | 0:07:53
and she tried to pick up one of the stars. But... | 0:07:53 | 0:07:57
"Ow!" The star let out a squeal. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
"Take your hands off me at once!" it cried. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:05
Well, Kitty, she jumped back in surprise. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
"I thought you were precious treasure," she said. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
"I'm a starfish," said the starfish crossly. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
Kitty looked very hot and bothered. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
"Sorry I disturbed you. I won't do it again," she said, blushing. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:23
But before Kitty could get any more flustered, | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
we all felt an enormous rumble | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
and the whole of the sea bed seemed to tremble. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
"Ooooh!" howled Salty. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
"What's that?" | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
"Goodness!" cried the turtle. "The volcano is erupting." | 0:08:39 | 0:08:43
"Quick, follow me." | 0:08:43 | 0:08:45
So we all swam off at top speed up to the surface of the waves | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
and into a sandy bay. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
"It's all right, we'll be safe here," said the turtle. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
"This is the island where I buried my eggs." | 0:08:55 | 0:08:59
Well, we were just in time. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:01
In the distance, we saw a huge orange-grey plume | 0:09:01 | 0:09:06
rising from the waves. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:07
The volcano was erupting all right. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:11
"Thank you for saving us," I told the turtle. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:15
And we all sat down on the sand to watch the cloud of volcano ashes | 0:09:15 | 0:09:20
curling upwards out of the sea. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:23
As we looked across the beach, we suddenly saw the sand moving. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:29
"Uh-oh!" cried the turtle. "My eggs are hatching." | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
As she spoke, the cloud of smoke and ashes from the volcano | 0:09:33 | 0:09:38
curled into the sky and covered the moon. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:40
It started getting darker, but if we squinted, | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
we could just see that the baby turtles had hatched | 0:09:44 | 0:09:48
from their buried eggs and were digging themselves out of the sand. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:53
"Oh, no!" said the turtle in a panic. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:55
"The moon is hidden behind that dusty cloud | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
"and it's too dark for my babies to find the sea. What do I do?" | 0:09:58 | 0:10:03
Then Salty's whiskers whiffled. She was having one of her bright ideas. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:08
SHE BARKS | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
She pointed her paw to the Rainbow, which was anchored in the distance. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
"Salty, you're a genius," I cried. "We need to light the moon lantern." | 0:10:14 | 0:10:21
But we had to be quick | 0:10:21 | 0:10:22
for the turtle babies were starting to appear from the sand. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:27
"You'll never be able to swim to your ship in time," said Kitty. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:31
"Too far away." | 0:10:31 | 0:10:33
"I think my friends can help," said the turtle. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
We went to the water's edge | 0:10:37 | 0:10:39
and the turtle called out to all her friends. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:41
"Leatherback turtles, wherever you are, I need your help. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:45
"Please form a path." | 0:10:45 | 0:10:48
And soon the sea was teeming with leatherback turtles. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:53
They all formed a path, like stepping stones, from the beach | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
right across the sea to the Rainbow. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
"Quick!" cried the turtles. "Use our backs as stepping stones. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
"We're ever so strong." | 0:11:03 | 0:11:04
So he did. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
Hoppity, skippity, quickity, quickity. Heh! | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
And before we knew it, we were back aboard the Rainbow. Oh! | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
"Right, Salty," says I, "let's light the moon lantern." | 0:11:13 | 0:11:18
Well, in a matter of seconds, the moon lantern had flickered into life | 0:11:18 | 0:11:22
and it gave out a huge silvery white light, which sparkled on the sea. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:28
The baby turtles saw the twinkling waves | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
and made their way safely to the sea. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
"Thank you for saving my babies," called the turtle happily. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:38
"You're welcome," we said. "Congratulations. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:42
"You've got a lovely family. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:44
"Look at them all." | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
"Tickle me dimples. That was an adventure!" cried Kitty | 0:11:46 | 0:11:51
as she jumped back on board the Hurly-Burly and sailed away. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
"Come on, Salty, my girl," I said, "we'd better get going. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:59
"That's more than enough excitement for one night." | 0:11:59 | 0:12:04
So, with the silvery light of our moon lantern to guide us, | 0:12:04 | 0:12:08
we sailed all the way home. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
Did you like that story, Salty? Yeah? | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
All true, of course. Mind you, my stories always are. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:24
HE CHUCKLES | 0:12:24 | 0:12:26
Oh! Look. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:27
Oh, dear. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
Come on. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:32
-Oh, hello, Jack, Salty. -How did you get on with the egg delivery? | 0:12:42 | 0:12:47
All the eggs were delivered carefully and safely, | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
without any mishaps whatsoever. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:52
-Was Sam pleased to get them? -Were you pleased to get the eggs? | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
-Lovely, Ernie. -Just... -What the doctor ordered. | 0:12:56 | 0:12:59
-No, no. Just one problem. -What's that, then, Ernie? | 0:12:59 | 0:13:02
Well, Sam's oven wasn't working | 0:13:02 | 0:13:04
so we have to take the eggs down to Shelly's caff to have them cooked. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:09
-It's a smashing idea. -It certainly is that. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
-Off we go, Sam. -Right you are. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:14
Dustbin! | 0:13:16 | 0:13:18
Football! | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
-Elephant! -Elephant? | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22
Ha-ha! That's what Jack said. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:24
ALL LAUGH | 0:13:24 | 0:13:26
-Pavement. -Oh! | 0:13:26 | 0:13:28
Oh, dear. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:31
We might have missed our fish supper | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
but I think there will be scrambled eggs at the Mermaid Cafe tonight. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:38
Come on, Salty. Oh, dear me! | 0:13:38 | 0:13:40
Well, Salty, that's it for today. | 0:13:44 | 0:13:46
We'll see all our friends again next time. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:49
Oh, and we'll see YOU next time as well. Bye-bye. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:54
Come on, girl. | 0:13:54 | 0:13:57
