Lovely day to be out and about, Salty, isn't it? | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
Oh, look at that. There's a banana. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
Somebody must've dropped it. You see that? | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
-CHUCKLES -Hello! | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
There's another one! | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
That's amazing - two bananas. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
Look at that! There's another one. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
That's one, two, three bananas! | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
Look at that, Salty! | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
I wonder where they've all come from. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
Not raining bananas... No. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
Come on. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:13
Oh, Jack. What are you going to do with that lot? | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
We found them. Someone must have dropped them. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
-Not yours, are they? -No! Oh, and a shopping bag, too! | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
Perhaps the bananas belong in there, eh? | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
-Come on, Salty. We'll see if we can solve the mystery. -See you later. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:32
Bye-bye. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
Come on, up you go! That's the girl. Ooh, my knees...! | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
Go on, good girl. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
Miss Bowline-Hitch! Are you there? | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
Oh, come on in, Jack! Oh! My bananas! | 0:02:50 | 0:02:55
I wondered whose they were. Are you all right? | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
SIGHS Oh, Jack, I've had a bit of a shock. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
I'd done all my grocery shopping, and I'd stopped for a snack, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
so I reached in my bag for a banana, and... Oh! It was horrible! | 0:03:06 | 0:03:11
-Horrible? -Yes! | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
My hand felt something...hairy. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
Well, I was so surprised I threw the bag into the air | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
and the bananas flew everywhere! | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
Then I dashed off home as quickly as I could. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
Well, what was it that scared you so much? | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
Some sort of nasty, hairy creature. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
-You didn't see it, did you? -No, no. -It must've escaped. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:36
-Emily and I will hunt for it in the bushes. -Right. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
We're off to the Rainbow for a clear-out. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
When we come back, we'll help solve the hairy creature mystery for you. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:46
-Hopefully! -Come on, Salty. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
Wasn't you, was it? You're a hairy creature. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
There she is! The Rainbow. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
What have you got for us today, my dear? | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
FOGHORN | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
Come on, Salty. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
Good girl, Salty. Go in your bed. Good girl. You curl up there. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:26
And don't distract me. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
Funny finding all those bananas, eh? | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
Wasn't there a time we got involved with some bananas? | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
I remember. Let me get comfortable... | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
and I'll tell you the story. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
Once upon a twinkly time, the Rainbow set off from Staithes, | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
waved goodbye to Whitby, and disappeared over the horizon. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:51
And as we sailed, we sang. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
# We're Salty Dog and me | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
# Upon the briny sea | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
# The waves are calm The wind is light | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
# We're working up an appetite | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
# Soon we'll cast anchor and open the hamper | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
# Just Salty Dog and me. # | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
It was snack time, so I fetched my trusty telescope | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
and scanned the horizon. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
And in the distance I saw an island with trees on it. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:20
And where there are trees, there's sure to be delicious fruit. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:25
"Snacks ahoy, Salty," I cried. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
So we set our course for the island. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
And when we were as close as a stone's throw, we dropped anchor. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:35
"Isn't it nice here, Salty?" I said as we strolled along the beach. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
And then I spotted a palm tree full of coconuts. Look at that! | 0:05:39 | 0:05:44
"Here's something to eat! "Coconuts! I cried. "My favourite." | 0:05:44 | 0:05:49
Salty said she didn't like coconuts, she only liked bananas. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:54
And just then I spotted something unusual peering down at me | 0:05:54 | 0:05:59
through the leaves. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
It was small and hairy with huge, shiny horns, | 0:06:01 | 0:06:06
and it was jumping about and chattering. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
"Look, I think we may've discovered a rare beast, Salty," I whispered. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:14
Salty said she hoped that it was friendly. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
"I'll try talking to it," I said. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
-CLEARS THROAT -I put on my politest voice. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
"Hello. I'm Jack and this is Salty," said I. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:29
"We've forgotten our picnic hamper. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
"Could I eat one of your coconuts?" | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
The creature put its head on one side for a moment | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
-and then it let out a loud shriek... -SHRIEK! | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
..and threw down a coconut! | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
"Thank you very much," I said. "Much appreciated, I'm sure." | 0:06:46 | 0:06:50
We sat down in the shade of the tree | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
and I was just about to eat the coconut | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
when a strange man came stomping up the beach towards us. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
He was very big and as hairy as a coconut shell. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
"Greetings," he said, in a booming voice. "I am Erik the Viking." | 0:07:03 | 0:07:08
"Well, very nice to meet you," I said. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:11
I'd never met a Viking before and I wasn't sure what to say. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
"Er, you having a good day?" "No," said Erik. "I am not. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:21
"I took off my helmet to go for a swim | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
"but it seems to have disappeared." | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
"Have you seen it?" Well, Salty and I shook our heads. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
We definitely had not seen a Viking's helmet. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
"But I must find it," said Erik sadly. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
"I am on my way to a huge Viking feast that lasts for weeks. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:41
"And weeks. And weeks. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
"But they won't let me in if I don't have my helmet." | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
At that moment, another coconut came flying down from the tree. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:52
"Who threw that?" said the Viking crossly. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
He squinted up into the tree | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
and he saw the unusual creature with the shiny horns. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:01
"Ah!" I said. "I think it was that funny-looking beast with the horns. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:06
"It throws us coconuts. It's ever so kind." | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
"That's not a funny-looking beast with horns, | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
"it's a monkey with my helmet on!" said the Viking. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
Old Salty and I peered up at the creature | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
and we couldn't help chuckling, for it was, indeed, a monkey! | 0:08:19 | 0:08:24
"Give me back my helmet!" shouted the Viking. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:27
He waved his fist at the monkey. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
And the monkey chattered | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
and waved its fist back at the Viking! | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
"I want my helmet back, you bow-legged branch-buckler!" | 0:08:35 | 0:08:40
boomed the Viking, and he stamped his feet. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
Well, the monkey jumped up and down on the branch, copying him stamping! | 0:08:43 | 0:08:49
But it didn't seem to want to part with the helmet! | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
"Stinkpots!" said the Viking. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
"I'll never get my helmet back at this rate." | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
"It's definitely a problem," I said, scratching my chin. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:02
The monkey scratched his chin, too. "Hm," I said. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
"That monkey seems to be copying everything we do. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:12
"Perhaps, if I throw my hat down, | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
"the monkey will throw down your helmet." | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
"Maybe," said the Viking, smiling hopefully. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
But the monkey was watching us | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
through the leaves with its shiny button-eyes. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
"Here goes," I said. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
And I took off my cap... and I threw it down. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:34
And then would you believe it... the monkey took off the helmet | 0:09:34 | 0:09:39
and - yes! - it threw it down. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:41
"Oh, thank goodness!" cried Erik. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:44
"Your plan worked!" | 0:09:44 | 0:09:46
But, oh dear - the helmet was completely broken. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:52
Erik put his head in his hands - "Oh, no!" he cried. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:57
"You can't go to the Viking feast with a broken helmet, | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
"it's not allowed," he groaned. "What am I going to do?" | 0:10:00 | 0:10:05
The monkey climbed down from the tree and sat down next to Erik. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:10
It put its head in its little monkey hands | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
and looked just as upset as Erik. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
"Can you stop copying me now? It's getting annoying," | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
said the Viking crossly. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
"I don't think the monkey meant to break your helmet," I said. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:27
"Perhaps we could have our own feast here?" | 0:10:27 | 0:10:31
Salty said it was not much of a feast, as there were only coconuts. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:35
But then, the monkey scampered off and seconds later, | 0:10:35 | 0:10:40
something landed with a thump at our feet. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
Ah! It was a bug bunch of bananas! | 0:10:43 | 0:10:45
"Hey, look, Salty," I laughed. "Bananas! Your favourite!" | 0:10:45 | 0:10:50
So, Salty feasted on delicious bananas, | 0:10:50 | 0:10:54
and the Viking and I ate scrumptious coconuts. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:58
"It's a pity there isn't a tree that grows helmets," said Erik sadly. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:04
And then...Salty's whiskers whiffled. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:09
"She's having one of her bright ideas," I whispered to the Viking. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
We watched as Salty took two of the bananas | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
and fixed them to half a coconut shell. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:21
"Salty, you are a genius, my girl!" I said. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:26
For she had made the Viking a new helmet! | 0:11:26 | 0:11:30
"Amazing!" he said, trying it on. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:33
"It's much better than my old helmet. Now I can go to my feast. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:38
"Thank you!" | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
Well, it was time for us to go. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
"Have a lovely time at your feast," we told the Viking. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
"And thank you, monkey, for sharing your fruity snacks. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:51
"We're not hungry any more." | 0:11:51 | 0:11:53
And so with our tummies full and our sights set on the horizon, | 0:11:53 | 0:11:59
we clambered back aboard the Rainbow | 0:11:59 | 0:12:02
and sailed for Staithes and home. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:05
Had a lovely letter from the Viking. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
Said he had a smashing party. Yes. Hm. And lots of bananas. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12
You like that story, Salty? All true, of course. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
Mind you, my stories always are. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
CHUCKLES | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
Go on, girl. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:32
Oh, hello, Miss Bowline-Hitch. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
I was just wondering if you'd managed to find | 0:12:37 | 0:12:41
-the hairy beast that gave you such a shock earlier. -I'm afraid not. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:45
Emily and I looked everywhere, | 0:12:45 | 0:12:47
but there was no sign of a hairy beast anywhere. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
-I suppose you think I imagined it. -No, no, not at all. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:54
No, I was just wondering if you'd looked to see | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
if it was still in the shopping bag. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
Well, no, I haven't. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:01
But I think it's best if you do it. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
-I've already had one shock today. -All right, here goes. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:08
Ah! Yeah, it's still there. And it's hairy, all right. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
-Salty, you won't like this. -Is it a squirrel? | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
-No. -A rabbit? | 0:13:16 | 0:13:18
-No! -A hairy gorilla?! Er...no. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:22
No... | 0:13:22 | 0:13:24 | |
It's a coconut! | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
Oh, yes! Yes! | 0:13:27 | 0:13:29
I did buy a coconut! | 0:13:29 | 0:13:32
How embarrassing! I must've forgotten all about it! | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
The mystery of the hairy creature is solved. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:40
Thank you, Jack. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:42
No problem. Come on, time to head home, Salty. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:46
-Goodbye, you two. -Bye-bye. Come on, Salty. You and me. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:50
How very embarrassing...! Thank you! | 0:13:50 | 0:13:53
