CLATTERING | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
-Did you hear a noise, Salty? -CLATTERING | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
I think it's coming from Sam and Ernie's shed. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
Come on, we'll find out what's going on. Come on, girl. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
Come on. Don't be frightened. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
-Good morning! -Morning, Jack. -Morning, Jack. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
What's all this kerfuffle about then? | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
We're looking for the tape measure. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
What the one you lent to Miss Bowline-Hitch, you mean? | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
-So that's where it went. -SHE LAUGHS | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
Sam is making me a really big and useful box | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
-to keep all my fishing stuff in. -Oh. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
But a job like this is no good without a tape measure. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
Never mind, Ernie, we don't need it. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
-I'm an experienced professional, all I need is the plans. -Ah. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:25
Ah. Er...no plans? | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
-No. -Not to worry, an experienced professional like me | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
-doesn't need plans. -Oh, I don't think I like the look that. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:36
-Do you, Salty? -Leave this to me, Ernie. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
Yes, well, I think we'll leave both of you to it if that's all right? | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
Come on, Salty, let's get back to The Rainbow. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
-See you later, Jack. -Bye-bye. -Pass us that screwdriver. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
CLATTERING | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
There she is... The Rainbow! | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
Well, what have you got for us today, my dear? | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
HORN | 0:03:06 | 0:03:07 | |
-HE LAUGHS -Come on, Salty. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
HE HUMS | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
There we are. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
HORN | 0:03:20 | 0:03:21 | |
Yeah, good girl, Salty. You settle down. Good girl. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
Well, what about that kerfuffle with Sam and Ernie, eh? | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
HE SIGHS | 0:03:29 | 0:03:30
Do you remember that time I thought | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
we could do without something we really needed, Salty? | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
The Map! We need the map to know where we're going. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
Oh, we got in a right pickle that day and no mistake. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
-HE SIGHS -Let me get comfortable | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
and I'll tell you the whole story. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
Once upon a twinkly time, The Rainbow set off from Staithes, | 0:03:47 | 0:03:52
waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:57
I had lent my map to a pal of mine. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
Now, we usually never leave port without it, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
but it was such a lovely day | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
I convinced Salty that we should set sail. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
And I began to sing. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
# Just Salty Dog and me | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
# Upon the briny sea | 0:04:13 | 0:04:15
# We've got no map but that's OK | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
# It's a beautiful, wonderful sunny day | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
# We're bowling along and singing this song | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
# Just Salty Dog me. # | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
-HE LAUGHS -Well, we hadn't got very far | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
when it got very cold and very foggy. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
Salty had that | 0:04:33 | 0:04:34
you-should-have-brought-the-map look in her eye. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:38
And she was right. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
"We're lost," I exclaimed. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
"Found you," said a squeaky voice. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
"Can I get a badge for that?" | 0:04:45 | 0:04:47
HE LAUGHS | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
It was our old friend Penguin on an iceberg. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
"You're near the South Pole," said Penguin. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
Well, I'd quite forgotten that Penguin | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
was a member of the 123rd South Pole Rangers. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:05
He had a badge for everything. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
"And now I'm going to get one for flying," he said | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
"Ah," said Salty. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
"Penguin," I asked, "can you fly?" | 0:05:14 | 0:05:19
"No," he said, "but I'm trying and then I can get a badge for it." | 0:05:19 | 0:05:24
"Look." | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
And he held up his Rangers handbook | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
and turned to the page that said "flying badge." | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
"To be awarded a flying badge," it said, | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
"Rangers must go as far as the blue-tipped iceberg | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
by flapping their wings and not touching the ground, not once." | 0:05:39 | 0:05:44
Well, we all looked at the blue-tipped iceberg. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:48
It was a very long way away. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
Penguin flapped his slippery wings. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:54
"I can do it," he said. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
And he flapped...and he flapped... | 0:05:57 | 0:05:59
and he hopped and he hopped and he flapped and he flapped again. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
"Am I at the blue-tipped iceberg yet," Penguin puffed. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:08
Salty put a paw over her eyes and shook her head. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:14
"Ohh," said the disappointed Penguin | 0:06:14 | 0:06:18
and he sat down...right beside The Rainbow. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
Beside The Rainbow? How's that possible? | 0:06:22 | 0:06:27
Salty and I looked over the side. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:31
The sea had completely frozen over. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:35
The Rainbow was stuck in the ice. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
"I can help," said Penguin. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
And he pecked away at the ice. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
Will... Peck! ..I get... Peck! | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
..a badge... Peck! ..for this? | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
Salty wasn't sure. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
Penguin had only managed to peck a teensy hole | 0:06:54 | 0:06:58
and his beak was looking a little skew-whiff. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
"Thank you," I said, "but I think we need something hot to melt the ice." | 0:07:02 | 0:07:08
"We'll have to wait until summer when the sun comes out." | 0:07:08 | 0:07:12
Well, Salty didn't want to wait until summer, | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
she'd planned a trip to Saltburn and wanted to get home soon. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
And that's when her whiskers started wiffling. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:24
She was having one of her ideas. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
"Thelma the Dragon!" she woofed. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
"She can melt the ice with her hot, fiery breath." | 0:07:30 | 0:07:34
"Good thinking," I said. "Get the Dragon Whistle." | 0:07:34 | 0:07:37
"I can't find it," woofed Salty. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
"It's tied to the edge of the map," I said. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:44
And then I remembered, we didn't have the map either. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:49
Salty had that | 0:07:49 | 0:07:50
you-should-have-brought-the-map look in her eye. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
"How are we going to get Thelma now?" I said. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:58
And then Salty's whiskers started to wiffle, | 0:07:58 | 0:08:02
she was having another one | 0:08:02 | 0:08:04
-of her bright ideas. -SALTY BARKS | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
"The Rainbow!" | 0:08:06 | 0:08:08
"We can send Thelma a signal using smoke from the funnel," she said. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:14
"She'll never see it," I said. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
"I know," said Penguin suddenly, "I'll get Thelma for you!" | 0:08:16 | 0:08:21
"But it's a very, very long way," | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
I shouted to Penguin as he dived through the ice. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:27
"It's all right, I might get a badge for this!" | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
And he was off! | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
"I hope he'll be OK," I said to Salty | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
as we watched him go all the way | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
to just past the blue-tipped iceberg and then... | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
-we couldn't see him many more. -HE SIGHS | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
Suddenly, Salty spotted a pink dot in the distance. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:49
When it was just past the blue-tipped iceberg, | 0:08:49 | 0:08:53
we could see... | 0:08:53 | 0:08:54
it was Thelma! | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
Below in the water...there was Penguin | 0:08:56 | 0:09:00
flapping his wings and flying through the water. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:05
"I said I'd beat you back, Thelma," | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
he shouted as he shot out onto the ice. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:12
"Only just though," Thelma replied | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
as she landed on top of The Rainbow's funnel. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
"Spot of bother, Jack?" | 0:09:18 | 0:09:20
"Nothing you can't solve," I said. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:23
And, in an instant, she had melted the ice with her hot, fiery breath | 0:09:23 | 0:09:28
and The Rainbow...was free. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:32
"Thank you, Thelma," I said. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
"And thank you, Penguin." | 0:09:34 | 0:09:36
"That's all right," said Penguin. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
"Do I get a badge for that?" | 0:09:39 | 0:09:41
So I looked on every page of the Penguin Rangers Handbook, | 0:09:41 | 0:09:46
but try as I might I just couldn't find | 0:09:46 | 0:09:48
a going to Smoulder Island to get Thelma badge. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:52
"Never mind," Penguin said with a woeful waddle, | 0:09:52 | 0:09:57
"the flying badge is the one I really want anyway." | 0:09:57 | 0:10:01
Then Salty pointed to the page about the flying badge. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:08
"To be awarded a flying badge," it said, | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
"Rangers must go as far as the blue-tipped iceberg | 0:10:12 | 0:10:17
"by flapping their wings and not touching the ground, not once." | 0:10:17 | 0:10:23
Well, Penguin had gone further than the blue-tipped iceberg | 0:10:23 | 0:10:29
by flapping his wings and he didn't touch the ground, not once, | 0:10:29 | 0:10:34
he had flown all the way... underwater! | 0:10:34 | 0:10:39
"You can have your flying badge after all. Hooray!" | 0:10:39 | 0:10:43
HE LAUGHS | 0:10:43 | 0:10:45
"I can?" he stuttered, turning a little bit pink. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:48
-"Wow! Thank you!" -HE LAUGHS | 0:10:48 | 0:10:52
And we'll cheered and gave him a big hooray | 0:10:52 | 0:10:56
whilst he gave the 123rd South Pole Rangers' salute. | 0:10:56 | 0:11:01
"Well, we'd best be off before this ice freezes," I said. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:07
But then...I remembered, we were lost. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:11
We didn't have the map. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
"I know the way," said Thelma. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
So we said goodbye to Penguin | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
and followed Thelma all the way | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
-back to Staithes and home. -HORN | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
And after that, we never left port without the map again. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:31
Salty made sure of that, didn't you, eh? Ha-ha! | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
HORN | 0:11:35 | 0:11:36 | |
Did you like that story, Salty? | 0:11:40 | 0:11:42
All true, of course. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:44
Mind you, my stories always are. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
It's a lot quieter in the workshop, Salty. | 0:11:56 | 0:12:00
Come on, I wonder if Sam's finished | 0:12:00 | 0:12:02
building that trunk for Ernie's fishing gear. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:05
Let's go and have a look. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:06
Ernie, are you all right? | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
-I'm fine! -Oh. -Sam's told me to close my eyes, | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
she's got a surprise for me. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
-She's finished my trunk. -Oh! | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
All finished. You can take a look. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
Ooh! | 0:12:24 | 0:12:26 | |
That's amazing! | 0:12:26 | 0:12:29
Perfect for my fishing stuff! Perfect! | 0:12:29 | 0:12:33
It looks more like a cupboard than I imagined it would. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:37
Well, that's because it is a cupboard. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
-Your trunks inside. -Oh! HE LAUGHS | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
This?! It's a bit...small. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
I told you it would be a surprise. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
You see, that's what comes from having no plans and no tape measure. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:59
Sorry, Ernie. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:01
Do you know what, Sam, this cupboard would be perfect | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
for my fishing stuff. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:06
Why don't we just clear it out | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
and forget about building enormous trunks? | 0:13:08 | 0:13:11
-Good idea. -Yeah, that's the spirit. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
And I know just what we can put in there. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16
Dog biscuits! Perfect for Salty. Yeah. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:20
See you later, Sam. Bye, Ernie. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
-See you later. -Bye, Jack. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
ERNIE SIGHS | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
Well, Salty, that's it for today. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
We'll see all our friends again next time. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
Oh...and we'll see you next time as well. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:42
Bye-bye. Come on, girl. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:44 |
