Hello, I'm Luke Franks, and this is day eight of Pet School.

0:00:020:00:04

Our Pet Heads just have two days left to try and prove

0:00:040:00:07

to their families they should get the pet they've always wanted.

0:00:070:00:10

And they're going to have to pull out all the stops

0:00:100:00:12

if they don't want to make a baaaaad impression.

0:00:120:00:15

Example of a bad impression there...

0:00:150:00:17

Nine pet-crazy kids...

0:00:190:00:21

I'd like to have a dog.

0:00:210:00:23

I would really like a rabbit.

0:00:230:00:24

I really want a pet rat.

0:00:240:00:27

..101 animals needing care and attention...

0:00:270:00:30

..two incredible weeks...

0:00:320:00:34

..but have our Pet Heads got the animal know-how...

0:00:360:00:39

Ugh, they poo! Ugh!

0:00:390:00:41

..to persuade their parents they've got what it takes

0:00:410:00:44

to have a pet of their very own?

0:00:440:00:46

Has she proved to you she can be a responsible pet owner?

0:00:460:00:49

Is she getting a pet?

0:00:490:00:51

Previously on Pet School...

0:01:100:01:12

there was a drawer full of surprises in the cat room...

0:01:120:01:15

Whoa!

0:01:150:01:17

..and the Pet Heads sounded out working with hearing dogs.

0:01:170:01:19

Good... Excellent!

0:01:190:01:21

On today's Pet School...

0:01:210:01:23

William and Thomas go crackers...

0:01:230:01:25

I'm going to put it back in. I just want to see

0:01:250:01:27

-if they go for the rat crackers...

-No!

0:01:270:01:29

..and the Pet Heads get a pet download

0:01:290:01:31

from Friday Download's George Sear.

0:01:310:01:33

It's time for morning assembly.

0:01:390:01:42

-Good morning, Pet Heads.

-ALL: Good Morning, Luke!

0:01:420:01:45

It is day eight, right?

0:01:450:01:47

In 48 hours, you're going to find out

0:01:470:01:49

whether you get your own pet at home.

0:01:490:01:52

Oh, yes!

0:01:520:01:54

-It's getting closer, right?

-Yes!

0:01:540:01:56

Me and Maria have been having a chat recently, as well...

0:01:560:01:59

Because it's getting so close to the last day,

0:01:590:02:01

we are drawing up your end of term reports.

0:02:010:02:04

So, if ever there was a time to step up, today's the day, right?

0:02:040:02:07

-Yes.

-Yep.

0:02:070:02:08

Tomorrow, it's parents' day.

0:02:080:02:10

ALL: Oh, no!

0:02:100:02:12

Your parents are going to be coming in.

0:02:120:02:14

They'll be able to meet your pet buddies.

0:02:140:02:15

We're getting so close to decision day. You've got to impress them

0:02:150:02:18

and show them what you've been doing, all right?

0:02:180:02:20

Unfortunately, Ananya's still not very well,

0:02:200:02:22

so hopefully she gets better soon. But, for the rest of you,

0:02:220:02:25

-do you want to find out our Pet Practice groups for today?

-Yes!

0:02:250:02:28

Good. All right, group one - Thomas and William.

0:02:280:02:31

Just the two of you for today.

0:02:310:02:34

-Hey, Thomas!

-So you're going to have to work super hard.

0:02:340:02:37

Um, you are with the rats.

0:02:370:02:39

I absolutely detest rodents.

0:02:390:02:41

All right, group two - Chloe, Courtney, and Tommy.

0:02:410:02:46

You're in the store room.

0:02:460:02:48

-Yes! Result!

-Woo!

0:02:480:02:50

Group three - Faramarz, Sam and Lauren.

0:02:500:02:55

You're going to be with the skink and the gecko.

0:02:550:02:58

Sam, thoughts?

0:02:580:02:59

I prefer the gecko to the skink.

0:02:590:03:01

Good stuff. So, 30 minutes again to complete your Pet Practice today,

0:03:010:03:04

and you want to do them properly,

0:03:040:03:07

get them done in the time correctly today,

0:03:070:03:09

because we've got a very special visitor...

0:03:090:03:11

An animal that we've never had before on Pet School.

0:03:110:03:14

Your pets are waiting. Off you go!

0:03:140:03:16

-ALL: Let's go!

-See you later!

0:03:160:03:18

Pet Practice is key to our Pet Heads showing they can responsibly

0:03:260:03:29

care for their animals, and have happy, healthy, and friendly pets.

0:03:290:03:32

And with decision day not far away,

0:03:320:03:34

they can't afford to waste any opportunity to prove themselves.

0:03:340:03:38

Things have just got serious.

0:03:380:03:40

Which means Thomas and William will have to stop being

0:03:400:03:43

ratty about Rosie, Daisy, and Primrose if they're going

0:03:430:03:46

to have a whisker of a chance at getting their very own pet.

0:03:460:03:50

"Why, hello again, Pet Heads.

0:03:500:03:52

"Being a rat can be boring, so they need lots of stimulation

0:03:520:03:55

"from their own pet owners to keep them entertained.

0:03:550:03:58

"Today, you need to...

0:03:580:03:59

"You have just 30 minutes to complete your Pet Practice.

0:04:030:04:05

"William, you are the team leader."

0:04:050:04:07

Can you start doing the cage?

0:04:070:04:09

I'm going to start with the rat crackers.

0:04:090:04:11

Yay, I made my first rat cracker.

0:04:150:04:18

It's funny, the bedding smells like crisps.

0:04:180:04:22

What flavour?

0:04:220:04:24

Ready salted? Cheese and onion?

0:04:240:04:27

-I suppose I'd say ready salted.

-Can I get a whiff of that?

0:04:270:04:29

Yeah, go and have a whiff of that, then.

0:04:290:04:32

-Yeah, it does a bit.

-I know, it does.

0:04:320:04:34

-Team Rats, hiya!

-Hi!

0:04:340:04:37

-Hi, how are you getting on?

-We're doing great.

0:04:370:04:39

-Yeah.

-I've done the crackers.

-Good job.

0:04:390:04:41

Have you put a little hat inside for the rats?

0:04:410:04:43

-Yeah, yeah.

-Yeah, you've done that? Good to know.

0:04:430:04:45

-And a little toy.

-And a little toy? A little joke?

-Yeah.

0:04:450:04:47

Little rat-based joke, good work.

0:04:470:04:49

I think I might try and put one on my shoulder.

0:04:490:04:53

Cool. Hey, this looks good.

0:04:530:04:56

Their tails are weird.

0:04:560:04:58

Yeah, they are strange, aren't they?

0:04:580:05:00

Kind of a bit freaky. How should we get them out?

0:05:000:05:02

-Is there a technique?

-Yeah.

-Oh yeah, yeah.

0:05:020:05:04

Sure, cheers, Thomas(!) Thanks for letting me know.

0:05:040:05:06

Thought you would like that. Look at William!

0:05:060:05:09

It's weird on your neck, isn't it?

0:05:090:05:10

'Yep, I'm not nervous!

0:05:100:05:12

'I just know that rats like to wee

0:05:120:05:14

'to mark their territory.'

0:05:140:05:16

-Do you want to take him...

-If you could, yeah.

0:05:160:05:19

Great. Well, you look like you've got it under control, um...

0:05:190:05:23

-Yeah, I think we have...

-I want to really try and...

0:05:230:05:25

Can you try and get one on my shoulder?

0:05:250:05:28

Right, well, don't run away, William.

0:05:280:05:30

You can do it. He's on, he's on, he's on.

0:05:300:05:32

There you go. He's just checking you out.

0:05:320:05:34

You all right? He looks more relaxed than you.

0:05:340:05:37

There you go, give her a little scrub.

0:05:370:05:40

-Can you get him off?

-Yeah.

0:05:400:05:43

Boys, good job. I'll let you crack on and finish your task.

0:05:430:05:45

You look like you're on top of it. See you in a bit.

0:05:450:05:48

Bye.

0:05:480:05:50

It's actually very relaxing having one on your shoulder.

0:05:520:05:56

I had a rat on my shoulder. I was a bit scared

0:05:560:05:58

because they have quite sharp claws and it's quite...

0:05:580:06:01

You don't know where they are.

0:06:010:06:02

You're sort of looking over your shoulder.

0:06:020:06:04

But I did do it and I'm quite happy.

0:06:040:06:06

Nice work, William.

0:06:060:06:07

Over in the feed room, Chloe, Courtney and Tommy are going

0:06:070:06:10

to have to be crafty if they want to finish Pet Practice properly.

0:06:100:06:14

This is what one of you needs to be able to make.

0:06:140:06:17

They have 30 minutes to...

0:06:170:06:20

So, these are your different plants that you need to be going to find

0:06:240:06:27

out in the playing fields.

0:06:270:06:29

Take these as your guides for what you're looking out for,

0:06:290:06:32

because it is important. We have got some poisonous plants out there

0:06:320:06:34

so you need to be making sure that you are confident

0:06:340:06:37

-that we're picking the right plants first.

-Yeah.

0:06:370:06:39

But all of these are really, good, really healthy,

0:06:390:06:41

and ideal for our pets at the Pet School.

0:06:410:06:43

I think I'll go and help Tommy.

0:06:430:06:46

-OK.

-And you can start making the willow balls.

0:06:460:06:48

-See ya. Right, let's go.

-Let's go!

0:06:480:06:51

Go, go, go!

0:06:510:06:53

Let's get in the fields,

0:06:530:06:55

-then we can quickly try and find some right...

-Search!

0:06:550:06:59

Get searching wherever you can!

0:06:590:07:02

-Let's go to the bottom of the field!

-Yeah.

0:07:020:07:04

Quite stressing.

0:07:040:07:06

Get in front, get in front! Let's go, go, go!

0:07:060:07:10

I'll go this way. You can go and check over there.

0:07:100:07:12

-Should we abandon the wheelbarrow and...

-Yeah.

-..search?

0:07:120:07:16

As Tommy and Courtney panic about plants,

0:07:190:07:22

Lauren, Faramarz and Sam are finding out what's on the menu

0:07:220:07:25

in their Pet Practice.

0:07:250:07:28

"Feed the skink a defrosted mouse..."

0:07:280:07:30

"You have 30 minutes to complete your Pet Practice.

0:07:340:07:36

"Lauren, you are team leader."

0:07:360:07:37

-Here you go, Faramarz.

-What, I'm doing it?

0:07:370:07:40

-You were doing it.

-Nope, you can do it.

-OK.

0:07:400:07:42

SHE LAUGHS

0:07:420:07:44

It's already dead. It's not like it's alive.

0:07:440:07:47

-No, but it just feels so bad.

-I just feel really bad.

0:07:470:07:49

I'd put it right at the front.

0:07:490:07:51

No, down here, down here, at the front of her cave.

0:07:510:07:53

-Down there.

-Here?

-OK drop, drop it.

0:07:530:07:55

I feel really bad now.

0:07:550:07:57

-Hello!

-Hi.

0:07:570:07:58

Come and look at the mouse.

0:07:580:08:00

Yes, yes, yes, yes, look at it, look at this.

0:08:000:08:02

-He's eating the mouse.

-He's eaten the mouse.

0:08:020:08:04

The mouse has gone.

0:08:040:08:06

So, we fed the skink. Good.

0:08:060:08:08

Check. Right, next, come on.

0:08:080:08:09

Wow! All right.

0:08:090:08:10

I mean, that's one job done, isn't it?

0:08:100:08:13

It made me feel horrible after feeding that mouse,

0:08:130:08:16

but as long as he's got his food.

0:08:160:08:18

If he's happy, we're happy.

0:08:180:08:20

Back at the feed room, Chloe's bouncing through

0:08:200:08:23

making the willow balls.

0:08:230:08:24

I wander what the others are doing right now.

0:08:240:08:27

Happy as can be, probably, picking little plants.

0:08:270:08:31

I think I've found some rose.

0:08:310:08:33

Ouch! My ankle, my ankle!

0:08:350:08:38

Grab the wheelbarrow, go, go, go.

0:08:380:08:40

It's quite panicky at the moment,

0:08:400:08:42

because we don't really have much time left.

0:08:420:08:46

We've only got about 15 minutes left to find all of this

0:08:460:08:49

and then go back to the store room.

0:08:490:08:52

With only 15 minutes to go, Lauren is feeling jumpy,

0:08:520:08:55

as the rest of her team prepare the crickets

0:08:550:08:57

for Lisa the gecko's dinner.

0:08:570:08:59

-My fault.

-Close it, close it, close it! Put the lid on.

0:08:590:09:03

Watch out, watch out.

0:09:030:09:04

Oh, no, you'd better grab that one.

0:09:040:09:06

-Yeah, got it.

-Drop him in.

-OK.

0:09:090:09:11

-Yes. The rest.

-So what do you want?

0:09:110:09:13

Calcium, calcium, a pinch.

0:09:130:09:15

-There we go.

-I'm going to shake it. Gently, gently.

0:09:150:09:18

Lisa has over 200 bones in her body,

0:09:180:09:21

and calcium powder on the crickets will help keep them strong.

0:09:210:09:25

Back outside, the only thing growing for the guinea pig team

0:09:250:09:28

is Tommy's frustration.

0:09:280:09:30

Foraging for wild plants is not at all necessary.

0:09:300:09:34

I mean, it's a nice little treat for them,

0:09:360:09:38

but so is hay.

0:09:380:09:41

Why can't you just stuff hay in willow?

0:09:410:09:43

Well, guinea pigs actually need a varied diet

0:09:430:09:46

of seeds, plants and leaves.

0:09:460:09:49

We ain't got much time.

0:09:490:09:50

Go, go, go, take this stuff out! Take this stuff out! Quick!

0:09:500:09:54

You've got to stick some stuff in. That's it.

0:09:540:09:57

Quick, quick. Got to go, got to go.

0:09:570:10:00

Quick, quick, quick.

0:10:000:10:02

We've done it! It's done.

0:10:020:10:04

As Tommy cools down, things between Thomas and William

0:10:040:10:08

are getting a little heated.

0:10:080:10:09

-Leaves.

-Please, Thomas.

0:10:090:10:11

-It's fine.

-That's enough.

0:10:110:10:13

Try adding some cardboard boxes or even some plastic igloos.

0:10:130:10:17

Yes, go on, find plastic igloos...

0:10:170:10:20

-Well, have you checked the folder?

-I did, it says it likes large tubes.

0:10:200:10:25

We do have a lot of stuff to still put in,

0:10:250:10:28

so you don't want to put too much in.

0:10:280:10:30

Yes, Thomas...

0:10:300:10:32

Can we take the food out and see if they go for the rat crackers?

0:10:340:10:36

-No!

-We'll put it back in.

-No. No.

0:10:360:10:39

They have to have their food bowl. It was already in there.

0:10:390:10:44

William, drop the bowl.

0:10:440:10:46

-I want to see...

-Drop it.

0:10:460:10:48

-I'm going to put it back in.

-Drop it.

0:10:480:10:50

-I just want to see if they go for the rat crackers.

-No!

0:10:500:10:53

-Then I'll put it back in.

-They'll still go for the rat crackers.

0:10:530:10:55

-No, they won't!

-That's just in case they run out of the rat crackers,

0:10:550:10:58

-they still have some food, so they don't starve.

-OK.

0:10:580:11:02

OK, can you get the cage, please?

0:11:020:11:04

The Pet Practice task is very stressful,

0:11:040:11:08

because William is not listening to me,

0:11:080:11:11

and I find, to be a good team leader, you have to listen to the

0:11:110:11:15

people around you, and I don't think he's the best team leader right now.

0:11:150:11:21

I'm just going to let you win the argument...

0:11:230:11:26

to avoid conflict.

0:11:260:11:29

OK, bringing it in.

0:11:290:11:32

Time flies when you're having fun, and that is time on Pet Practice.

0:11:350:11:38

But have our Pet Heads completed their assignments properly,

0:11:380:11:41

or will they be doing extra time,

0:11:410:11:43

and missing out on our special visitors later?

0:11:430:11:46

But, before they find out,

0:11:460:11:47

Marie has something very special to show our Pet Heads.

0:11:470:11:51

About two weeks ago, my work got a phone call,

0:11:510:11:54

and someone had actually been going to do a bit of recycling...

0:11:540:11:57

They saw a cardboard box with 18 guinea pigs sitting in there.

0:11:570:12:01

Someone abandoned them.

0:12:010:12:02

Today, we have two heavy pregnant mums.

0:12:020:12:04

Courtney, if you're able to sit here for us...

0:12:040:12:06

Now, guinea pigs are quite different to humans and other animals.

0:12:060:12:09

They actually have two big pouches on their side,

0:12:090:12:11

so they don't end up with a big belly out the front.

0:12:110:12:14

And, interestingly, they can sometimes have two or three

0:12:140:12:16

babies in one pouch, and the other pouch could be empty,

0:12:160:12:19

or they might have three or four in one, and only one in the other.

0:12:190:12:22

So, hand flat under her belly, that's it.

0:12:220:12:24

Did you just feel it?

0:12:240:12:26

-Yeah.

-What did it do?

0:12:260:12:27

It just felt like a little push on the side.

0:12:270:12:31

-Saying hello.

-Yep.

0:12:310:12:33

You need to be really gentle with the babies,

0:12:330:12:35

-because she could give birth in...

-Ooo!

-Yeah?

0:12:350:12:38

It's amazing, isn't it?

0:12:380:12:41

You could feel the babies inside, kicking,

0:12:410:12:44

and it was really amazing, so I'm glad I got that experience.

0:12:440:12:47

Guinea pigs are quite different to a lot of animals.

0:12:470:12:50

They are, within half an hour, fully furred, eyes open, ears open,

0:12:500:12:54

-baby piglets, ready to go.

-Really?

-Yep.

0:12:540:12:57

OK.

0:12:570:12:58

How old do you think a baby boy could be until he can become a daddy?

0:12:580:13:02

-Faramarz?

-One and a half?

0:13:020:13:04

-One and a half weeks?

-Years.

0:13:040:13:05

Years? OK, are you ready for this?

0:13:050:13:07

A male baby guinea pig could become a dad at three weeks old.

0:13:070:13:11

Can you imagine that as a human being?

0:13:120:13:15

-Yeah!

-A three-week-old dad.

0:13:150:13:17

Nice and gently, bring her straight in to you,

0:13:180:13:21

if you can, Luke.

0:13:210:13:22

So, Marie, do you know how many babies they're going to have,

0:13:220:13:25

or are you not definitely sure?

0:13:250:13:26

From general feel, I suspect she's going to have two to three.

0:13:260:13:32

That's two to three names we need for the baby guinea pigs.

0:13:320:13:35

KIDS GASP

0:13:350:13:36

-Do we get to name them, then?

-We'll take the best suggestions.

0:13:360:13:39

-Yes, definitely.

-Thomas, do you want to go first?

0:13:390:13:41

Could I name it Thomas? Because I...

0:13:410:13:43

Why would you like to name it Thomas, Thomas?

0:13:430:13:45

-Because that was the pet buddy.

-We'll bear that in mind.

0:13:450:13:47

-Anyone else? Faramarz.

-Oasis.

-Oasis? Why Oasis?

0:13:470:13:51

I don't know, I just thought of it straight away

0:13:510:13:53

-when you said names.

-Chloe?

0:13:530:13:55

It's called Chloe.

0:13:550:13:57

One - because I'm pet buddy,

0:13:570:13:59

and two - my mum told me, I think, it means princess

0:13:590:14:01

or something similar to that.

0:14:010:14:03

-One more name, anyone?

-William?

0:14:030:14:04

If it's two boys, I like Faramarz's Oasis,

0:14:040:14:07

but I also like Hulk. Hulk and Oasis.

0:14:070:14:09

-Hulk and Oasis.

-Little boy. I like that.

0:14:090:14:11

Think about, really,

0:14:110:14:12

are you going to be able to care for a pet for seven years?

0:14:120:14:15

And there's already all these babies in rescue centres,

0:14:150:14:17

so we need to be making sure we know how to really deal with them

0:14:170:14:20

properly, and how to care for them.

0:14:200:14:22

But hopefully we'll find new homes for these guys soon.

0:14:220:14:25

A few days later,

0:14:250:14:26

Kylie the guinea pig had three babies - Thomas, Chloe, and Oasis.

0:14:260:14:30

Still to come...

0:14:330:14:35

Thomas faces his fears,

0:14:350:14:37

Lauren gets her teeth into bonding with her buddy,

0:14:370:14:41

and some never-before-seen visitors wow our Pet Heads.

0:14:410:14:44

So how did our Pet Heads do today in Pet Practice?

0:14:500:14:53

Thomas and William successfully completed all their tasks...

0:14:530:14:57

as did Courtney, Tommy and Chloe...

0:14:570:14:59

and Lauren, Sam, and Faramarz.

0:14:590:15:02

Time to tell them the good news.

0:15:030:15:06

You're in this room because you passed Pet Practice!

0:15:060:15:08

ALL: Yes!

0:15:080:15:09

Good job. So, today, we've got another very special visitor,

0:15:090:15:12

and it's an animal we've never had at Pet School ever before, as well.

0:15:120:15:16

The tall human one is called Gary,

0:15:160:15:18

you might recognise him already,

0:15:180:15:20

and he's brought a special friend, as well-

0:15:200:15:21

Hugo the iguana.

0:15:210:15:24

Oh, that is awesome! Whoa!

0:15:240:15:28

Gary, come and have a seat.

0:15:280:15:30

He's not a small fellow, is he?

0:15:320:15:34

No, whoa!

0:15:340:15:36

He is massive!

0:15:360:15:38

I like him.

0:15:380:15:40

How big is he, Gary?

0:15:400:15:42

Make a mess, why don't you?

0:15:420:15:45

-Hugo's about a metre and a half in length.

-Whoa.

0:15:450:15:48

And they can get up to about two metres.

0:15:480:15:51

I should say he's about fully grown.

0:15:510:15:54

That is ridiculously massive.

0:15:540:15:55

Look how long his tail is.

0:15:550:15:57

Hugo's actually got a lovely calm temperament.

0:15:570:16:00

You can see that he likes being stroked.

0:16:000:16:03

He has a favourite spot of under the jowls.

0:16:030:16:05

If you scratch behind there, he loves it.

0:16:050:16:07

-A little bit like a bearded dragon, right?

-Yeah.

0:16:070:16:10

Actually, yeah. I loved him and I was really upset to swap him

0:16:100:16:14

for the ferrets, but this is just another scale of a...

0:16:140:16:17

Why does he kind of have spiky teeth on his back?

0:16:170:16:21

The spines here help him with his display.

0:16:210:16:24

It makes him look a little less easy to eat for other predators,

0:16:240:16:28

and a little bit more aggressive,

0:16:280:16:31

so that when he's displaying,

0:16:310:16:33

he really gives off that "I'm the boss" vibe.

0:16:330:16:36

How old is he?

0:16:360:16:37

Hugo's about six years old.

0:16:370:16:39

He was originally a rescue.

0:16:390:16:43

And yeah, they can live about 20 years,

0:16:430:16:45

sometimes a little bit more.

0:16:450:16:47

OK, so a proper commitment.

0:16:470:16:48

In 20 years time, you could have your own kids, William,

0:16:480:16:50

and if you had an iguana, you'd still have him.

0:16:500:16:53

Yeah, that's freaky.

0:16:530:16:54

It is a big commitment.

0:16:540:16:55

So, this one is Joe.

0:16:550:16:57

-He's a beauty!

-Aww, he's beautiful!

0:16:570:17:00

This one is an albino, which means that, genetically,

0:17:000:17:03

they don't produce any dark pigments in their skin.

0:17:030:17:06

They can also, if they're caught by a predator,

0:17:060:17:08

drop their tail, and then, over time, they can re-grow it.

0:17:080:17:12

It's a really cool defence mechanism.

0:17:120:17:15

-What's this for?

-I'm glad you asked that.

0:17:160:17:18

That's called the dewlap.

0:17:180:17:20

Because it's really thin skin,

0:17:200:17:22

it's really good for controlling their body temperature,

0:17:220:17:25

because it's full of lots of blood vessels and they can catch

0:17:250:17:27

a cool breeze on that, or even, in a sun spot, warm up very quickly.

0:17:270:17:31

Well, Gary, thanks for coming in. Pretty special, right?

0:17:310:17:34

ALL: Yes.

0:17:340:17:35

A really unusual animal.

0:17:350:17:36

Good to see you, thanks for coming to Pet School

0:17:360:17:38

-and showing us your iguanas.

-You're welcome.

0:17:380:17:40

-Thanks, Gary.

-Thank you, Gary.

-You know what you've got to do now.

0:17:400:17:43

You've got to go and look after the animals you've been bonding with

0:17:430:17:46

all week. Go and spend a bit of time, say hello to your pet buddies.

0:17:460:17:49

-Off you go.

-See you, guys.

-Bye, Gary.

0:17:490:17:52

Aw, I really want to keep him.

0:17:520:17:54

As the Pet Heads check in with their buddies, one person who can't

0:17:580:18:01

wait to brush up on bonding with hers is Lauren with Meadow.

0:18:010:18:05

Hello!

0:18:050:18:06

What have you been doing for your pet buddy session, then?

0:18:060:18:09

-I've just been taking her out at the moment.

-OK.

0:18:090:18:11

I'm actually a dog owner, and there is actually quite a few other

0:18:110:18:14

bits and pieces we need to be doing, as well.

0:18:140:18:16

I thought what we could do today is have a little check of her teeth.

0:18:160:18:19

We can see the bottom ones looking nice and healthy.

0:18:190:18:21

What colour are some of them?

0:18:210:18:23

-Some of them are looking a little bit yellow.

-Yeah.

0:18:230:18:26

-You've got a bit of nasty teeth in there, don't you?

-Aww.

0:18:260:18:28

Yes, you do.

0:18:280:18:30

But it's important as an owner that you're checking regularly,

0:18:300:18:33

as much as you can, and giving them treats, chews,

0:18:330:18:36

all, like, the sort of Kong treats

0:18:360:18:37

that are really going to work those teeth, as well.

0:18:370:18:40

Whilst Lauren gets her dog duties licked,

0:18:400:18:42

Sam is shouldering his rat responsibilities.

0:18:420:18:45

Come and have a little sit down.

0:18:480:18:50

It's always a good idea to start, when you're socialising a rat,

0:18:500:18:53

to start off in a nice comfy zone. So, socialise them on your sofa,

0:18:530:18:56

or somewhere small, where they can't run away and escape from you.

0:18:560:19:00

A good thing with the ratties is that they actually socialise

0:19:000:19:03

-and get used to when you come home from school.

-Oh, right.

0:19:030:19:05

So they'll sleep while you're at school,

0:19:050:19:07

and they know about 4 o'clock time, they'll be at the door,

0:19:070:19:10

ready to come out and they'll be waiting,

0:19:100:19:12

they'll jump on you and follow you around.

0:19:120:19:13

If you put the time in with rats, they can be brilliant.

0:19:130:19:16

An easy way to bond with your rats is by offering them treats.

0:19:160:19:19

Now, with rats, they often, like she just did there...

0:19:190:19:21

-Are you OK?

-My shoulder...

0:19:210:19:24

What she just did then is just sort of licked your finger,

0:19:240:19:26

and that's just tasting the salt on your hand.

0:19:260:19:28

So, if you keep your hand still, they rarely actually ever bite you.

0:19:280:19:32

They just want to really gently use their tongue to taste it.

0:19:320:19:34

-I'm going to leave you to it. Good job, though. See you later!

-OK.

0:19:340:19:39

While Sam has the rats eating out of his hands,

0:19:390:19:41

Chloe is hoping her Pet Practice willow balls

0:19:410:19:44

will make bonding with the pigs a roll-over...

0:19:440:19:47

especially after her mum's concerns yesterday.

0:19:470:19:51

It is a worry if she's not bonding with them,

0:19:510:19:53

because it makes me think,

0:19:530:19:55

"Will she actually look after something that

0:19:550:19:57

"she's not really that interested in?"

0:19:570:19:59

I was a bit unhappy to hear that, of course,

0:19:590:20:02

but I think I've definitely made an effort.

0:20:020:20:04

I've got to try and get them to get used to me.

0:20:040:20:08

It said hold them for a second. There we are.

0:20:080:20:10

Second one of the day, I'm pretty proud.

0:20:100:20:12

It looks like Chloe has had a stroke of luck

0:20:120:20:14

in bonding with the guinea pigs.

0:20:140:20:17

Come on, Thomas...

0:20:170:20:19

Meanwhile, over in the reptiles, it's a different story.

0:20:190:20:23

It's very hard to bond with a snake when you're scared of a snake.

0:20:230:20:29

HE BREATHES HEAVILY

0:20:290:20:31

I don't like this at all.

0:20:310:20:33

Hi, Thomas. How are you doing?

0:20:340:20:37

Not so well.

0:20:370:20:39

While she's out right now, moving around,

0:20:390:20:41

this is an ideal time to pick her up.

0:20:410:20:43

Just touch and lift.

0:20:430:20:45

So, this is her skin here, so I'm going to touch, and go like that.

0:20:450:20:48

OK? Be nice and confident with her, you're a bit too far apart...

0:20:480:20:52

Try not to keep lifting your hand up, because, the thing is,

0:20:520:20:55

every time you keep touching her, that's just going to rile her up

0:20:550:20:58

even more, so you want to be nice and confident and get it done.

0:20:580:21:01

Yep, lift, lift, lift, all the way, that's it, good job.

0:21:010:21:04

Bring this other hand in. Good job. Now, lift her up.

0:21:040:21:08

You're doing it.

0:21:080:21:09

Oh!

0:21:120:21:13

Chill. Let her feel like you're just a nice tree moving in the wind.

0:21:130:21:18

Yeah? You're doing a great job. I'm watching her.

0:21:180:21:21

When she's on me, I don't feel so scared.

0:21:210:21:24

You look a lot more relaxed with her.

0:21:240:21:26

So, just get that bond going, remember.

0:21:260:21:28

Support her body, that's it. Good job.

0:21:280:21:31

Keep handling her for a little bit, but you do seem more relaxed.

0:21:310:21:34

Remember, just keep taking that nice breath, and just relax.

0:21:340:21:36

She needs to feel that you're relaxed, OK?

0:21:360:21:39

Because she's going to be more tense if you're tense.

0:21:390:21:41

Good job, I'll see you later.

0:21:410:21:43

Oh, I don't feel so happy right now.

0:21:460:21:50

She's just left, and I don't know if it wants to go...

0:21:500:21:55

or not...so I'm just going to maybe put her back in.

0:21:550:22:00

There you go...

0:22:000:22:03

There you go.

0:22:030:22:04

Yesterday, our Pet Heads were asked to cast their vote for who

0:22:120:22:15

they thought made best pet carer.

0:22:150:22:18

The person that I will be voting for is...

0:22:180:22:21

Really supportive...

0:22:210:22:22

I think the best pet carer...

0:22:220:22:24

Always works good in a team.

0:22:240:22:27

I think the best pet carer...

0:22:270:22:29

Should be...

0:22:290:22:30

Courageous and brave with all animals.

0:22:300:22:33

I think the best pet carer...

0:22:330:22:35

Works really hard, gets stuck in...

0:22:350:22:38

Ananya is still ill at home,

0:22:380:22:40

so I'm giving her a call to find out who she'd like to vote for.

0:22:400:22:44

Thank you for your decision, Ananya, I'll put your vote in the mix,

0:22:440:22:47

as well, and then we're going to find out who wins

0:22:470:22:50

-later on today, all right?

-All right!

0:22:500:22:52

OK, all right, take it easy, and get well really soon,

0:22:520:22:55

-missing you!

-Bye.

0:22:550:22:57

All right, see you soon, Ananya, bye-bye.

0:22:570:22:59

-Bye.

-Bye.

0:22:590:23:02

But before I announce who's won best pet carer,

0:23:020:23:04

I've arranged a magical treat for the Pet Heads.

0:23:040:23:08

It's been a big day already. We've had a special visitor...

0:23:080:23:10

Yes, loved him.

0:23:100:23:11

But we're good to you. We've got another special visitor...today.

0:23:110:23:14

ALL: Ohhh!

0:23:140:23:15

I think you're going to love this one. It's going to be fun.

0:23:150:23:18

So, you'll know him from Friday Download...

0:23:180:23:20

his name is George Sear,

0:23:200:23:21

better known as Magic George, and he's brought his dog Dougie, too.

0:23:210:23:24

George, come on in!

0:23:240:23:26

ALL: Woo!

0:23:260:23:29

Yes! Keep running.

0:23:290:23:30

-Hi, mate, how you doing?

-I'm good, thanks, how are you?

0:23:300:23:33

Good. I'm really good. This is Dougie, right?

0:23:330:23:36

-Yeah, he's a Jack Russell Terrier.

-Nice to see you,

0:23:360:23:38

thanks for coming to Pet School. You're busy at the minute, right?

0:23:380:23:41

Tell us what you've been up to.

0:23:410:23:42

If you watch Friday Download, you'll know I'm the magic man on it.

0:23:420:23:45

If I put the 10p here, and the 2p there, right...

0:23:450:23:49

Don't do this yet, but when I say,

0:23:490:23:51

I just want you to close your hands around that coin very quick, OK?

0:23:510:23:55

3-2-1, go.

0:23:550:23:56

OK, I'm not sure if I got one.

0:23:560:23:57

Open your hand up slowly.

0:23:570:23:59

You can actually see that the 10p has completely disappeared.

0:23:590:24:02

I know, I know, I know.

0:24:020:24:04

That's not it, yet, I've got to bring it back, right?

0:24:040:24:06

So turn your hand round.

0:24:060:24:08

I'm actually going to drop that coin straight underneath your watch.

0:24:080:24:12

It's ridiculous, innit? That is mad!

0:24:130:24:17

If you're magic man, is he magic dog?

0:24:170:24:19

He is, and you might actually get to witness some magic from Dougie.

0:24:190:24:22

-Should we try it?

-Yeah!

0:24:220:24:25

-So Sam is going to be your beautiful assistant.

-Yeah.

0:24:250:24:27

-What do you need him to do?

-OK, so, Sam...

-Yeah.

0:24:270:24:30

You're going to need to put this blindfold on, OK?

0:24:300:24:32

So just wrap it round twice, make sure you can't see anything,

0:24:320:24:35

and then I'm going to take you over to the board

0:24:350:24:37

and hand you this pin up here. And once I hand it to you...

0:24:370:24:39

you can put it in anywhere you want on the map,

0:24:390:24:42

-it's going to be completely random, OK?

-OK.

0:24:420:24:44

So, just put that on.

0:24:440:24:46

Just tuck this in here.

0:24:460:24:48

-How many fingers am I holding up?

-I don't know, four?

0:24:490:24:52

OK, you definitely can't see.

0:24:520:24:53

OK, just come over to the board here...

0:24:530:24:55

-Whoa, this is weird.

-Yeah, don't worry, I've got you.

0:24:550:24:58

Right, I'm going to hand you this pin, safely,

0:24:580:25:00

so just hold your hand out.

0:25:000:25:01

OK, now I just want you to put it in the board, anywhere you would like.

0:25:010:25:06

You're sort of in front of it now.

0:25:060:25:07

OK.

0:25:070:25:09

Now, I know you can't see anything,

0:25:100:25:12

-but are you happy with your decision?

-Yeah.

-100%?

-Yeah.

0:25:120:25:15

OK, feel free to remove your blindfold.

0:25:150:25:17

OK, so just step out a tiny bit.

0:25:170:25:18

If you could actually get closer to the pin,

0:25:180:25:20

and read out the closest town.

0:25:200:25:22

-York.

-York.

0:25:220:25:23

All right. Dougie! Come over here.

0:25:230:25:25

You guys didn't know this, but Dougie's actually

0:25:250:25:28

been in on it from the start,

0:25:280:25:29

and I'll explain what I mean by that.

0:25:290:25:31

Inside his bandana, there's a prediction.

0:25:310:25:33

OK, I'll pull it out. I prepared this earlier.

0:25:330:25:36

And, in here, it has something written down,

0:25:360:25:39

so if you'd like to open that...

0:25:390:25:41

And then clearly show everyone what is written on there.

0:25:410:25:46

Unfold it.

0:25:460:25:48

-York, yes!

-York. There we are.

-Nice!

0:25:510:25:54

Amazing, and that's why he's called Magic George.

0:25:540:25:58

-Cool, so you're going to stick around, George?

-Yeah.

0:25:580:26:01

Because we are about to announce the winner of yesterday's...

0:26:010:26:05

THEY ALL GASP

0:26:050:26:07

..best pet carer award.

0:26:070:26:09

You cast your votes, we've checked with the animals,

0:26:090:26:12

they're happy with the winner, as far as I can understand,

0:26:120:26:14

ferrets really didn't really make any sense,

0:26:140:26:17

but it's fine... OK, we are ready.

0:26:170:26:18

So, the winner... Drum roll, please...

0:26:180:26:21

ALL: Woooooooah...

0:26:210:26:24

The winner is...

0:26:240:26:26

..Lauren.!

0:26:270:26:29

-ALL: Yay!

-Yes, Lauren!

0:26:290:26:32

Good job. You were voted by everyone as best pet carer.

0:26:320:26:36

A surprised winner, good job.

0:26:360:26:38

Well done, Lauren!

0:26:380:26:39

I was really astounded by that.

0:26:390:26:41

I was so shocked, but, like, I was so happy.

0:26:410:26:45

And I just really thank everybody that voted for me.

0:26:450:26:49

Thank you so much!

0:26:490:26:51

Well done, Lauren.

0:27:320:27:34

0:27:340:27:38

THEY SCREAM

0:27:380:27:40

..and Tweetie Pie grabs a quick dinner.

0:27:400:27:43

I'm so glad I'm a human.
