Episode 5 Relic: Guardians of the Museum

The British Museum, London. One of the oldest museums on Earth.

By day, visitors come to see the treasures within.

But by night, it's a different story!

I sense three children approaching.

They're here!

Welcome to the British Museum, and a night you shall remember

for the rest of your lives.

Are you ready for a wondrous adventure?

-Yes.

-Jolly good.

Well, I'm your guide for this evening. My name's Agatha.

I'm like the tour guides you see around during the day,

except I only do the night shift.

Now, one or two of you may have realised that I am in fact dead,

in that, I'm not alive.

Well, I actually died in the 1920s.

But enough about me. Who might you be?

-Kofi.

-Jade.

-Tom.

-Welcome.

You must be wondering why you have been summoned here in the middle of the night.

Listen carefully.

You have just one night to discover the secrets and mysteries of a relic

held deep within these walls.

You will face three challenges.

Each challenge will unlock a vision about your relic.

Pass the challenge, and you will all see the vision.

Fail, and the vision will be revealed to just one of you,

and you will have only their memory to rely on.

Your knowledge of the three visions will be tested in the final battle,

when you come face to face with the Dark Lord.

Succeed, and you'll become Guardians of the Museum

and receive the Golden Scarab.

Fail, and you will become relics yourselves

and part of the museum forever.

Agatha!

That was the Dark Lord. He knows of your arrival and will be on his way.

Look! Right, we have to keep moving.

Follow me this way, chaps.

Run as fast as you can, Agatha!

My dark forces are coming for the children. Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Right. We should be safe here for a few moments.

You never know when those dark forces are going to appear.

Right, now, look at these turquoise masks. Aren't they amazing?

This one over here is a real life human skull. Eugh.

Now, the Aztecs believed that turquoise

was more precious even than gold. Hmm.

It's time for your first challenge,

which we need to do to unlock a vision

and find out about your relic.

Now, to get there, you need to follow my instructions.

So hold on nice and tight.

Come along.

Tighter than that, I don't want to lose any of you!

-Jolly good. This is going to be such fun. Let's go!

Oh, goodness me!

-That was exhilarating, wasn't it?

-Yes!

This is the pyramid in the city of Tenochtitlan.

It's one of my favourites.

It's a beautiful city,

or at least it was until Hernan Cortes and his Spanish army ransacked the place.

Now the only treasure that's left is on the other side of this wall.

And it's your challenge to find it.

You must find the five pieces of turquoise, OK?

Turquoise looks like this.

You must jump through here,

find a piece of turquoise and then place it in this wagon

for your team-mates to retrieve.

Then you must do an action roll underneath this wall,

making sure you don't get squashed, OK?

At the end of 90 seconds, you must have all five pieces

and all three team members back on this side of the wall.

If you pass, all three of you will get to see the vision,

which will be very useful against the Dark Lord.

If you fail, only one of you will get to see the vision.

-Are you ready?

-Yes!

-Jolly good.

-Who's going to go first?

-I am.

-Fantastic. So you can go in...

Three, two, one... Go!

Go on, Tom!

We're looking for turquoise.

Can you see anything?

Fantastic. Pull it back. Get ready to roll. Get ready to roll.

which means you've passed.

To unlock the vision, we have to stand

in a special formation, so follow me.

Tom, around this side, good.

We put our ankles together. We stand up nice and straight.

I'm going to say a rhyme, you have to place your hands on this torch

to unlock the vision.

-Does that make sense?

Here we go.

Secrets and mysteries, we are ready to receive.

Deep breath in. Hold on tight.

Close your eyes. And see!

The vision begins.

Look, pyramids! It's Egypt.

Who's that?

The Roman emperor, Augustus. He's received some important news.

His enemies, Mark Antony and Cleopatra have been defeated.

They now lie dead. He now rules over this great land.

Molten bronze.

A statue is being made.

A statue of Augustus.

He wants them placed in every Egyptian town and village.

The people will be permanently reminded of the power and might

of their new Roman emperor, Augustus.

The image is fading.

We're going back to the museum, back to the museum,

back to the museum!

-Oh, goodness me! So you've all seen the first vision, yes?

-Yes.

-Did you see the relic?

-Yes.

-What was it?

-He was Augustus.

-It was a statue of him, put in every city of Egypt.

-What was that statue made of?

-Bronze.

-Bronze.

Bronze, good. So the relic is a statue.

Jolly good. Well, chaps, you need to remember all of that knowledge.

It will come in very useful against the Dark Lord in your final battle.

Now, it doesn't feel safe in here anymore.

The dark forces are descending. We must keep moving, chaps.

Erm, this way. Follow me.

So all three of you have seen the vision,

but will you remember everything?

My dark forces are closing in!

It's a giant scarab beetle, so you were very, very close.

Now, scarab beetles were considered sacred by the ancient Egyptians.

This particular one is from the Ptolemaic Dynasty,

into which a very famous Egyptian queen was born.

Hmm, which reminds me, your second challenge...

-Now, have any of you ever met an Egyptian queen?

-No.

-No.

Mmm. Gather round.

Hold on nice and tight. Jolly good.

-Right. Are you ready?

-Yes.

-Are you ready, chaps?

-Yes!

-Jolly good. Off we go.

-Right, are you all here?

-Yes.

It's beautiful. It's definitely Egypt.

I am Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt.

Such unusual names.

Now, in each of these pots

you will find a tiny, tiny snake with a very sharp bite.

I will give you some statements about our great Egyptian culture.

If you think the statement is true, place your hand in the true pot.

If, however, you think it is false, the false pot.

Now, if you get it correct three times, you will pass.

However, if you get it wrong,

you will receive a nasty bite!

Get three of those and you will fail.

First statement.

King Tutankhamun came to the throne at the age of two.

-False.

Then approach the false pot.

Well done. Congratulations.

Thousands of cat mummies found in Egypt in the 19th century

were ground up and used as fertiliser.

Then you must approach the false pot.

Oh, ho ho ho ho!

If you've got it right, there's nothing to fear, is there?

Next statement.

For hundreds of years,

chopped up mummies were fed to sick people as a cure for disease.

The vision begins, and we're going back to Egypt.

There, the statue of Augustus stands, a symbol of Roman victory.

But, wait! Invaders!

The Kushites, who live far away to the south of Egypt,

do not accept Augustus as their leader.

They're burning the cities and terrorising southern Egypt.

They're at the statue. What's happening?

The head.

They've taken the head!

But where to? The image is fading.

We're going back to the museum...

Back to the museum... Back to the museum.

Right, chaps. You've seen the second vision.

Tell me everything that you remember.

OK. Erm, the... What was it, the south of Egypt, I think.

The Kushites.

They, like, terrorised the city.

They didn't think that...

Augustus was a good leader.

-And what was their name again?

-The Kushites.

Right. What else do you remember?

-They came in...

-And they...

And they went into one of the cities and, erm, they went up to the statue,

the leader, I think, and they chopped off the statue's head.

So is the relic just the head of the statue now?

Keep all of that information in your heads.

That's going to be very useful in the final battle.

Remember, you must answer three questions correctly

to receive the Golden Scarab and become Guardians of the Museum.

Fail, and you will belong to the Dark Lord for ever.

Now, we're looking for two colossal

human-headed, winged bulls from Assyria.

They're around here somewhere.

I hope they haven't flown off.

There they are! Who put them there? Aren't they magnificent?

Now, these once guarded the entrance to a palace in ancient Assyria.

They're meant to protect against dark and demonic forces.

Very useful.

Right, we need to unlock your third and final vision.

So, you know the score by now.

Quick, hold on nice and tight.

Come on. Come along!

-Can't lose any of you. Are you ready, chaps?

Jolly good. Let's go.

Oh, goodness me! Right. Is everyone all right? Everyone here?

One, two, three of you.

Jolly good. I think we're OK.

Yes, I think we're in Assyria.

Yes, it's ever so hot, the sun.

It plays havoc with my complexion.

I don't know whether you've noticed, but I'm a little bit pale.

Now, Assyria is part of modern day Iraq. Oh, look, look!

It's an archaeological dig. Oh, how exciting! Now follow me.

Come along. You're going to become archaeologists for this challenge.

Now, there's a technique to it.

You're going to use these special archaeological tools.

I'll show you the technique. Gather round.

First of all, you brush away the sand very, very delicately,

then you lift it out with a trowel,

and I will bring over one of those bags for you to drop it into.

Now, one of the problems with being an archaeologist

is the creepy crawlies that lie under the sand.

And I think I've spotted one or two scorpions here.

Now, if you find three scorpions

before you find three pieces of treasure,

-I'm afraid that means you haven't passed. Understand?

-Yes.

OK. So pick up your tools.

And there's a map behind you that may or may not be useful.

-Oh, yeah!

-What are the X's?

Because an X probably means there's something bad in there,

-like a scorpion.

-Come on, Jade. Erm...

How about...

The vase.

-I think we should do this one.

-That one?

-Yeah.

-This one here?

-Mmhmm.

Let's see, very gently, very gently.

Oh, dear! That's disappointing.

Stay away from their tails. They're very scary, scorpions.

What a shame! Two more of those and I'm afraid it's curtains.

So we need the find three pieces of treasure now.

-What will you go for?

-I don't know.

You have to decide as a team which one that's going to be.

I don't mind. Well, I was the one that found it,

but I don't think that matters. I don't really mind.

-Kofi, do you want to do it?

Kofi. So Tom and Jade, come with me.

It's back to the museum for you. One either side, please.

Now, all you have to do is hold onto this torch,

and you'll be magicked back to the museum.

The vision begins, and we're at the ruins of a temple, but when?

An archaeological dig.

They've found something.

It's under the steps of the temple.

It's the head of Augustus!

The Kushites buried it under the steps of the temple

to defy their enemy.

They would walk over the statue whenever they went into the building.

Little did they know their actions would preserve

the head of their enemy for ever.

The image is fading.

We're coming back to the museum... Back to the museum...

So, Kofi, you've seen the third vision.

All that remains is for you to tell your team-mates.
