This is Kruger National Park in South Africa, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
home to some of the biggest, fastest and deadliest animals on the planet. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:10
CBBC have brought four British and four South African children | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
to spend a month here training to be rookie game rangers. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
Incredible! | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
Leading them on this amazing adventure will be their mentors, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
trails ranger Rudi... | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
It has taken me years to learn to be a ranger. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
-They've only got one month to do this. -..And guide Frankie. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
In the African bush, danger can be around any corner. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
So the Safari 8 needs to be alert and has to be ready at any time. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
Eight kids, two mentors and one massive challenge, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
to lead two celebrity guests on a safari experience of a lifetime. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
Last time, the Safari 8 packed up | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
and headed to the coast for a well-earned break. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
It was so awesome, the adrenalin was, like, whoa! | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
The rookie rangers were all at sea on a whale spotting mission. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
SCREAMING | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
I think I'm going to be sick. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
Yaaaay! Yay! | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
And the team had to face up to some hard truths in their mid-way reports. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
I'm going to reprimand you a bit now. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
Be very careful what you say, not to hurt another individual. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
Coming up, the Safari 8 spend the day getting back to basics. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
I find it a bit unfair that the boys had to do basically nothing, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
and we had to do all the work. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
It all gets physical in the team challenge. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
-Go, Tomas! -We so want this. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
And, there's tears before bedtime. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
I was speechless, it was so breathtaking the whole thing. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
It's midway through the Safari 8's month long ranger training. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
Our rookie rangers have travelled from Kruger to Rocktail Bay, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
a coastal reserve in KwaZulu Natal, the heartland of the Zulu people. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:14
Today, mentors Rudi and Frankie are taking the team to a Zulu homestead. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:19
They're going to step back in time and see how rural villagers lived. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
As a guide or ranger, a lot of your skills actually come from | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
traditional Zulus, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
such as hunting as well as tracking. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
And, it looks like most of the nearby community have | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
turned up to greet them. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
Zulus are the largest tribe of native Africans in South Africa. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
The word Zulu means "people of heaven". | 0:02:40 | 0:02:45
SINGING AND CLAPPING | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
Their traditional dances celebrate Zulu life | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
and tell stories from the past. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
For Safari 8 team members Sifiso and Nomalungelo, it's a chance for the | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
rest of the group to learn how their Zulu grandparents used to live. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:03
It is going to be a place where they can get more knowledge about we did | 0:03:03 | 0:03:09
long ago, and to know more about our Zulu tradition and culture. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
This Zulu village has been set up to give people a chance to explore | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
this ancient way of life. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
It is very exciting to see how happy they were about the place. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
And, after that welcome, the team are starting to feel at home. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
So they head off to check out some traditional Zulu houses. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
How cute. Check the bed. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
Oh, coat hangers. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
This home's a lot different to the home I live in. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
My one's made of bricks and is a lot bigger than this one. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
It's a wee bit more outdoor and more exciting than my house. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:54
And, once the boys are finally in, | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
Sifiso gives them a quick lesson in construction. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:03
Most of the things are made of natural stuff, as you can see here. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
Even this hut, it's waterproof. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:08
Water cannot come in. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
The huts are made from woven branches, covered with dried grass. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
It's stunning, the way they've done everything, it's awesome. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:18
It's fantastic that we've got two people from a Zulu background. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
Because we can ask stuff that we don't understand, | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
and they can help us so much more with their tradition. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
The women take the cow dung, and they rub it on the floor. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:31
And when you look at it, it becomes beautiful and new, because it's now | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
smooth and there are no cracks on the floor. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
Nomalungelo showed us all the different things, like the mats and | 0:04:37 | 0:04:41
animal skins, and how they actually built the foundation of the hut. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
And it was really interesting, | 0:04:45 | 0:04:46
especially since she's a part of the Zulu culture. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
But for Tomas, it's not the hut that's got his attention. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
What is that one, what is that one? Urgh, it's a spider! | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
-What is it? -It's just a normal spider. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
That's what you need to get used to, you're in the bush. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
And the bugs aren't the only thing bothering him. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
For a start, the floor was made out of cow's poo. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
It's open to snakes and spiders. And there's the holes in the wall | 0:05:07 | 0:05:12
which means the rain can get in. It looks really dark. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
I'm not a caveman. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
For 13-year-old gadget lover Tomas from Wales, the sleeping | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
arrangements on this trip have never been to his taste. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
I really want air conditioning in the next place, because I am | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
sweating like a dog in bed. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
I've never been camping before. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:29
I don't really like sleeping close to someone. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:31
I don't like it because I like my space. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
I suppose you have to get over it. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
Guys, you've seen the Zulu hut, you've seen everything, | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
-so what do you think? Tomas? -Yeah. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:44
I thought it would be bigger but I suppose you only come in to sleep. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:48
Come on. If this was ancient times, people would live in this place. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
They're trying to show us, | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
the people from outside, how the Zulu people lived. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
And Tomas's attitude isn't impressing Sifiso. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
Tomas didn't like the place. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
He said he wasn't sleeping in there because of snakes and spiders. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
But I think he would, like, take a step forward and try to sleep | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
in there, because I think it's going to be OK, it's going to be fun. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
The Safari 8 aren't here just to look around. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
Zulu men and women have very different roles in the village, | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
and local guides Gibson | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
and Nelly are here to give the team a taste of this ancient way of life. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:27
What we are going to do next, we're going to divide you into | 0:06:27 | 0:06:31
two teams to learn from the traditions of the Zulu people. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
The boys are going with Gibson. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
Gibson over there is a master spear thrower. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
So he's going to teach you guys to throw the spear. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
The girls are going with Nelly. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
Nelly is going to take you guys, and she's going to teach you a bit about | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
the woman's role in a Zulu village. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
-All right. You guys all excited? -Yeah. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
I can even see a smile from you, Tomas. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:59
Even for modern Zulu women like Nelly, the work is never done. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:04
Most of the time is spent doing domestic chores like cooking, | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
laundry and fetching water. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
It's a world away from what the girls are used to. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
-Is this the stuff you have to do every day? -Yes. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
In the morning, and in the afternoon. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
And, it's not just a case of turning on the tap. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:22
So, it's off to use the neighbour's well. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:26
By turning the wheel, water is drawn up to the surface. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:31
-Time for some girl power. -It's really really hard. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
It's kind of heavy as you turn it. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
It actually makes me appreciate water more. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
This is where, if you had to do this every day for the rest of your life, | 0:07:46 | 0:07:51
you would have mega muscles. Yes! | 0:07:51 | 0:07:53
Once full, they've got to get the water home, | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
and that's a bit of a balancing act. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:03
You are going to walk with it? | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
THEY LAUGH | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
-Just hold it. -Whoa! | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
It's going to squash my head, take it off. I am not letting go of it. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:19
-Should I take it out down? -Yeah, take it off. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
SHE SQUEALS | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
What if it falls? | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
One, two, three. Woo! | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
I was the only one who could balance the water on my head. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
It was like, it's the thing that I've always | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
done when I go to my grandma's house, it's something I'm used to. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
But at the same time it was kind of hard, because it was heavy. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:47
But, for the boys, Zulu life is proving less of a headache. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
-Ready? -Yeah, baby. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
And, local guide Gibson gives | 0:08:57 | 0:08:58
our would-be warriors a traditional spear throwing class. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
THEY GROAN | 0:09:03 | 0:09:04
Do it slowly. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
And, instead of an animal to spear, | 0:09:06 | 0:09:10
they've got a vegetable. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
For sports mad Manya, this should be no problem. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
Manya, Manya! Oh! | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
I thought, since it was quite close, it would be so easy just to | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
throw a spear into it, but it was actually really really difficult | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
to get it perfectly accurate. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
CHANTING: Sifiso, Sifiso, Sifiso. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
Ah! | 0:09:30 | 0:09:31 | |
As a Zulu man, I thought I was going to do well. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:35
Maybe if I had practised more and more, I could do it better. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
The target keeps on getting away. So Gibson tries a different approach. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:44
I'll give you these two, and see how you guys do it, yeah. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:48
The turnips' days are numbered. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:53
-Yes! -And, with dinner in the bag, the boys' work is done for the day. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:59
The girls on the other hand are still busy with their chores. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
What we're going to do now is collect the firewood. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:08
But carrying the wood home can be a bit of an armful. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
You take some. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:13
So the Zulus have come up with an ingenious solution. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17
This one, this is very very strong, can you see? | 0:10:17 | 0:10:21
-So it is. -Yeah. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
-You wrap it round your wood. -Using nature's string. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:27
So now I can just tie it like that. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:29
Put it on your head is the lady's way, put everything on the head. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:34
With nothing else to do, tabla drummer Kushal | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
entertains the boys while they kick back and relax. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:41
But all this free time seems to have gone to the boys' heads. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:45
I think the girls are going to be really jealous, | 0:10:45 | 0:10:47
bending their backs, hurting their backs picking up cabbage. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
And after we've been having fun, they have to make our food for us. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
I think it's going to be really cool. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
I'm really pleased that the boys are getting to throw spears, | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
and the girls have to cook food. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:01
Because boys have got more power, and they can throw spears. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:04
And the girls, they're going to cook things. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:07
I wouldn't let the girls hear you say that, Tomas, as they've | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
got another back-breaking task ahead of them, preparing the maize meal. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:14
And, for fiercely independent Caroline, | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
it all seems a little one-sided. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
I find it a bit unfair that the boys had to do basically nothing, and we | 0:11:22 | 0:11:26
had to do all the work. I mean, the boys are sitting there making drums. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:30
Probably the hardest thing they've had to do was walk from one chair to | 0:11:30 | 0:11:33
the other, to play a different drum. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:35
But the maize isn't going to crush itself. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
We've been doing this for ages, right. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:49
This is what it was to begin with. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
And this is what it was, about, like, loads and loads and | 0:11:51 | 0:11:53
loads of work put into it later. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:55
There's no change at all. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
And I feel we're going to be at this for hours and hours. | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
And I don't even think that they're going to appreciate it. | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
If they don't appreciate it, I'll be very upset. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:05
We'll go on strike if they don't eat it, and then they | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
won't eat anything at all, so they'd better appreciate it. High five. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12
Still to come: The gloves are off | 0:12:14 | 0:12:17
as the girls take on the boys in the ultimate battle of the sexes. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:22
MOOING NOISES | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
Rudi and Frankie make a shock announcement that changes everything. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
You're all going to have a specific goal. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
And the team return to Kruger where there's a big surprise waiting. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
When I first saw him, I was like in tears, and I was like, "Oh, my!" | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
It's challenge time. The Safari 8 have spent the day | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
getting stuck into Zulu life, so what better than a Zulu dance off? | 0:12:44 | 0:12:50
SINGING | 0:12:50 | 0:12:52
We're going to divide you in two teams again, | 0:12:52 | 0:12:54
-so it's girls against boys. -Oh yes! | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
For a reward and a forfeit. | 0:12:57 | 0:12:58
CHEERING | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
If you look down to there, there's a cow shed. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
The losers will be sleeping in that square cow shed tonight. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:08
And the winners will get one of these luxury huts | 0:13:08 | 0:13:13
-to sleep in tonight. -CHEERING | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
So, guys, get cracking. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
Looking the part, the teams have until sundown to practise. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:23
And, luckily for them, some local children | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
are here to show them how it's done. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
Boys go with boys, they're going to teach you how to dance. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
And the girls go with the girls. Off you go. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
While the boys master the steps of the ancient warriors... | 0:13:32 | 0:13:36
the girls practise the maidens' dance because no one wants | 0:13:36 | 0:13:40
to lose this challenge. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
The last time the girls and boys went head-to-head in a | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
team challenge... | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49
The girls crept into the lead to claim victory. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:57
And first to perform in the dance-off, it's the girls. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:05
Will they be able to continue their winning streak, leaving | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
the boys out in the cold of the cow shed? | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
Joining the mentors as judges are Gibson and Nelly. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:15
SINGING | 0:14:15 | 0:14:18
Dressed to impress with seed pods around their ankles and necklaces, | 0:14:18 | 0:14:22
the girls put on a great show. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:23
SINGING AND CLAPPING | 0:14:23 | 0:14:27
SINGING | 0:14:31 | 0:14:35
CHEERING AND CLAPPING | 0:14:35 | 0:14:37
The boys may look the part, but can they top that? | 0:14:41 | 0:14:45
The girls are feeling confident. | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
We so want this. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
DRUM BEATS Go, Tomas! | 0:14:50 | 0:14:54
There's no way Tomas is spending the night in the cow shed, | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
so he gives it his all. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:00
WHOOPING | 0:15:00 | 0:15:01
But, have the boys done enough to win over the judges? | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
-Only one team can win. -They put in a big effort for this. -. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:16
At stake, a night of Zulu luxury. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
-The boys, they did very well. -It's a close call. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:23
-The girls also did really well. -Yes. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:25
And the results are in. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:27
It was a very difficult decision between the ladies and gentlemen. | 0:15:27 | 0:15:31
But I think for the effort | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
that the boys put in, we are making them victorious. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:39
CHEERING | 0:15:39 | 0:15:41
OK. You are going to sleep tonight in the cow shed. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:47
THE BOYS MOO | 0:15:47 | 0:15:49
But at least the goals can see the funny side. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
I'm excited for the cow shed, I don't really mind sleeping in... | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
the cows' area. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:57
-THE GIRLS GIGGLE -Liar! | 0:15:57 | 0:16:01
The boys, luxury. THEY CHEER | 0:16:01 | 0:16:04
The girls have to sleep in the cow shed, unfortunately. It just shows | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
they weren't up to scratch when it comes to the dancing, the boys were. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:11
If we had carried on, I promise you, we would have won the whole thing. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:15
We should be in the luxury home, and I really want to hear Caroline | 0:16:15 | 0:16:19
screaming tonight when she sees an ant on the floor. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:22
So the team have mastered the dancing. Now Nomalungelo | 0:16:30 | 0:16:33
wants to see how they handle a little Zulu tongue twister. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
SHE SPEAKS ZULU | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
What?! | 0:16:40 | 0:16:41
What does it mean in English? | 0:16:41 | 0:16:43
It means he is sleeping on the African maize, | 0:16:43 | 0:16:47
thinking of himself holding a spear. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
SHE SPEAKS, AND THEY TRY TO REPEAT | 0:16:50 | 0:16:55
Zulu is one of 11 official | 0:16:55 | 0:16:57
languages in South Africa, and is spoken by over nine million people. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:02
Its distinct tongue clicking makes it a real mouthful for the novice. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:08
SHE TRIES TO SPEAK ZULU | 0:17:08 | 0:17:12
TOMAS SPEAKS ZULU LAUGHTER | 0:17:12 | 0:17:14
HE SPEAKS ZULU | 0:17:15 | 0:17:18
THEY ATTEMPT TO SPEAK ZULU LAUGHTER | 0:17:18 | 0:17:22
But it's not long before the team are down with the lingo. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
HE SPEAKS ZULU FLUENTLY | 0:17:25 | 0:17:27
THEY SPEAK ZULU CORRECTLY | 0:17:27 | 0:17:32
APPLAUSE Yeah! | 0:17:32 | 0:17:35
-Spoken like a true Zulu woman. -Yeah! | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
Time for bed and, as the girls lost the challenge, | 0:17:39 | 0:17:42
it's off to the cow shed. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:44
-Goodness gracious me. -I like it. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:46
Right, people, let's get ready. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
Because we're all going to be together, so it's fine. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
But it's just, Caroline is going to go crazy. We probably won't even | 0:17:50 | 0:17:54
get to sleep because she's going to be going, "Ant! Bug! No!" | 0:17:54 | 0:17:59
And Caroline's dislike of these wee beasties is starting to wear thin | 0:17:59 | 0:18:03
with the other girls. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
Cas, you have to get over it, seriously. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:07
It's a disgusting little bug that pushes poo, how can you like that? | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
Cas! | 0:18:10 | 0:18:12 | |
Caroline may champion equal rights for all, | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
but sadly that doesn't include bugs. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:18
SHE SCREAMS | 0:18:18 | 0:18:20
They are everywhere, in my tent, in my sleeping bag. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:24
I'm not sleeping here. I don't like it, and I liked it where we were. | 0:18:24 | 0:18:27
I can't touch the ground. | 0:18:27 | 0:18:30
I just took another bug off. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
Oh... It doesn't help. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
But unfortunately for Caroline, the bugs aren't going anywhere. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:40
-It's just bugs. -Cas! | 0:18:40 | 0:18:42
I don't like them, I can't help it. | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
Shouting at me doesn't make it any easier. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
I don't think I'll be able to sleep that easily tonight. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
I think I might be awake for a while or two. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:52
I mean, I've just seen massive bugs. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
I don't like bugs. | 0:18:57 | 0:19:00
Across the village, the boys have got a five-star night ahead of them. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:03
Whoa? That is so class. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:07
This is one seriously cool Zulu crib. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:09
Look at this house, it's a pimped Zulu house. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:11
-It's all very comfortable. -And even home boy Tomas is happy. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:15
-Feel the pillow. -Oh! | 0:19:15 | 0:19:18
It's the final morning on the coast. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:29
And how did the boys enjoy their night of Zulu luxury? | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
My sleep last night was really really good. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
The pillows are really comfy and the bed is really comfy. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:43
And I will apologise to whoever I was saying that this is horrible. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:48
Cos it is absolutely lovely and I wouldn't mind staying here | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
for the rest of the two weeks. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:53
I like it when he enjoys our Zulu culture and our house. | 0:19:53 | 0:19:59
The way the Zulu people used to live. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:02
So, I'm happy that he's happy. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:05
Across in the cow shed, | 0:20:05 | 0:20:07
was it sweet dreams for Caroline, or a beastie nightmare? | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
I didn't sleep very well last night, because I think I fell asleep first. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:14
But then I woke up really early. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:18
And I swear that little millipede thing came back in again, | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
because I could hear loads of tiny little legs. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
When it came back, I wasn't sure if anything had crawled into my bag, | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28
so I couldn't go back in it and I had to sit like this. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:30
I didn't mean to, but I chucked a spider on your pillow. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:32
It was dead, though. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:34
Because I found it in my bag. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:37
-Did you kill it? -No. Well, I must have squished it. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:41
The rookie rangers have just two weeks to overcome any fears, | 0:20:44 | 0:20:48
and get prepared for the final challenge. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:51
So far, they know they'll have to track the Big Five for their guests, | 0:20:51 | 0:20:55
and set up camp. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:57
But, as they're about to find out, that's not all. | 0:20:57 | 0:21:01
For the final challenge, you are all going to have a specific role. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:06
There is going to be one Head Ranger, two Trackers, three Guides, | 0:21:06 | 0:21:10
and two people in hospitality. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
Not only have Rudi and Frankie been making sure the Safari 8 | 0:21:13 | 0:21:15
have all the skills they need for the final challenge, | 0:21:15 | 0:21:18
they've also been assessing which role would best suit each member. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:22
The Head Guide, or Head Ranger, will be in charge of everything. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:25
Each of the Safari 8 will have the chance to show the mentors | 0:21:25 | 0:21:28
their leadership skills. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:30
But, only one can be chosen for the final challenge. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
As a tracker, your main job is to read tracks. Try and find animals. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:39
Two Trackers will take on the task of finding the animals. | 0:21:39 | 0:21:43
It's a big responsibility, so the right two people must be chosen. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
As a guide, you're going to be the link between nature and your guests. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:51
And that means they'll need to know everything about the Big Five and | 0:21:51 | 0:21:55
any other animals they might see. And that's a tall order. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
As hospitality, you are in charge of entertainment, | 0:21:58 | 0:22:04
the food and that there's enough of everything for the guests. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:08
Possibly one of the hardest jobs, the two rookie rangers who end up | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
in hospitality will need to cater for the guests' every whim. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:16
After living together for two weeks, | 0:22:16 | 0:22:19
Sifiso has got a good idea what role would suit team-mate Tomas. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:23
I think Tomas plays a lot. Sometimes it can get a bit irritating. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:26
So, I think he is going to take the hospitality or something else. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:29
But I think, just like they say, do not mix business with pleasure. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:33
-But Kushal is not so sure. -I don't think that Tomas would | 0:22:33 | 0:22:37
be able to do the hospitality role | 0:22:37 | 0:22:39
at all, because he is not very organised and stuff like that. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:42
If you see his room, there's stuff lying everywhere. | 0:22:42 | 0:22:44
There is one role that most of the team have their eye on. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:48
If I'm heading for anything, it's really the Head Ranger role. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:50
I'll try to ensure that I get the role that I want by | 0:22:50 | 0:22:53
just trying my best at everything. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
But there's tough competition. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:57
The role I would like to take would definitely be Head Ranger. | 0:22:57 | 0:23:00
I love leading, it's really fun. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:02
And what about everybody else? | 0:23:02 | 0:23:04
Ella would be a good Tracker, as she's good at identifying things. | 0:23:04 | 0:23:08
Nomalungelo would make a good hospitality. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
She's good at organising. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:12
Caroline would also make a good Guide. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:14
She's really good at that kind of stuff. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:16
Looks like someone has got the final challenge sorted, then. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:20
More or less. | 0:23:20 | 0:23:22
So, with no time to waste, | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
the team head back to Kruger to complete their ranger training. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
As the sun sets for the day, the Safari 8 arrive back in camp. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:42
The team have been away from their homes for two weeks, | 0:23:42 | 0:23:45
and everyone is starting to miss friends and family. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:48
So, Rudi and Frankie have some messages waiting for them. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:52
And first to hear from her nearest and dearest is Ashleigh. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:55
Hi, Ashleigh, we miss you. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:57
-Sh! -Everything is not the same. School is quiet, the house is quiet. | 0:23:57 | 0:24:02
I definitely found the whole thing really emotional, because | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
it wasn't just me who hadn't seen my family, it was seven other kids. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:10
Hi, Ashleigh. I'm missing you lots. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:13
I hope you're having lots of fun there. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:16
The whole thing was really nice. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:18
I was speechless, it was so breathtaking the whole thing. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:22
Keep being who you are, and I'm very, very proud of you. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
-And I love you lots. -I love you too! | 0:24:25 | 0:24:27
Hi, Kushal. It's really weird without you, I think. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
It's really weird. We really miss you. I love you lots. | 0:24:33 | 0:24:36
I hope you're having lots of fun and learning lots of things so... | 0:24:36 | 0:24:40
Hi, Kushal. I think you are all right. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:53
I miss you... | 0:24:53 | 0:24:55
-Look after yourself. Thank you. -Aw! | 0:24:57 | 0:25:01
Love you! | 0:25:01 | 0:25:02
CAROLINE: Your granny was gorgeous! | 0:25:04 | 0:25:07
I feel, like, all squishy inside now. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:09
-LAUGHTER -That's much better. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:14
I wish you a very good time | 0:25:14 | 0:25:15
at Kruger National Park. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:17
Just be good, my child. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:19
When I first saw my mum, I was in tears. I was like, "Oh, my". | 0:25:19 | 0:25:24
It was this feeling that I really, | 0:25:24 | 0:25:26
really needed all this time and I was so grateful for it. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:29
I was really happy. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:31
Pretty, in class, it's very boring without you. We miss you dearly. | 0:25:31 | 0:25:36
And we can't wait before you come back and tell us | 0:25:36 | 0:25:39
all about your experience there. | 0:25:39 | 0:25:41
CHEERING | 0:25:41 | 0:25:44
-Do you have that warm, mushy feeling inside you? -Yeah. | 0:25:44 | 0:25:47
Hello, Ella. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:52
We hope you're having a lovely, lovely time. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:54
Don't worry, we'll all still be here when you come back. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:56
So make the most of it and enjoy yourself. | 0:25:56 | 0:25:58
And I'm sure you're not missing your mobile phone, are you? | 0:25:58 | 0:26:03
And I hope you like eating, | 0:26:03 | 0:26:05
if you do eat elephant testicles, and lizard tails. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:11
If you get the chance, you should. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:13
We miss you lots, have a lovely time. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:16
Always thinking of you, that's the main thing. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
-That was so sweet. -AW! | 0:26:19 | 0:26:20
Have fun, enjoy yourself there. | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
Yeah, peace out. We love you, man. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:29
Make sure that you keep it our way. Go "hasla"! | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
I wanted to cry, but at the same time I didn't want to show my tears. | 0:26:34 | 0:26:38
But...they said "hasla" and stuff like that. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:42
It felt very sad, at the very same time I was very excited. | 0:26:42 | 0:26:45
HE SPEAKS NATIVE LANGUAGE | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
You are a very good boy. There is | 0:26:51 | 0:26:53
no good boy like you in the whole world, according to your father. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:57
Those strong words that were given from my family encouraged me a lot. | 0:26:57 | 0:27:02
Look after yourself very well, wherever you go. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
-How do you feel after that? -I feel like crying. -ALL: AW! | 0:27:07 | 0:27:10
You all right, yeah? | 0:27:10 | 0:27:12
Hi, Caroline, we've been missing you. | 0:27:15 | 0:27:17
-How are you doing? -Miss you. -We all hope you're having a ball. | 0:27:17 | 0:27:21
Remember the thing we said before you left. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:23
Take time to breathe at night, look at the stars and keep these memories | 0:27:23 | 0:27:28
-forever. -And watch out for midgies! | 0:27:28 | 0:27:30
Bye! Have lots of fun, see you soon. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:34
-Aw! -When I got the message from home, | 0:27:34 | 0:27:37
it was such a great feeling to just see them there. I was like, "Hoooo". | 0:27:37 | 0:27:41
It has definitely given me this massive boost to keep on going, | 0:27:41 | 0:27:45
to do them proud. | 0:27:45 | 0:27:47
Next time on Safari 8, the team have a close encounter with a cheetah. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:52
I find this experience fantastic. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:55
I just touched a cheetah! | 0:27:55 | 0:27:57
Get to feed a young orphan. | 0:27:57 | 0:28:00
And there's trouble in camp. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:04
Oh, Ashleigh, you stupid... | 0:28:04 | 0:28:05 |
