Episode 2 Sport Relief Does Glee Club

Last time on Glee Club,

VoxBox, Encore, Miss Chief,

MT13 and The Peppermints

all made it through to the studio heats.

You guys are like a musical energy drink.

Today, eight more acts will sing

and dance their hearts out for a place in the next round.

This is Sport Relief Does Glee Club 2014.

Hello and welcome back to

Sport Relief Does Glee Club 2014 -

CBBC's search for Britain's best young singing and dancing group.

This is the second of our judges' audition shows,

so the pressure is on.

Today, eight acts will give it their all for the chance to perform again

in front of a live studio audience.

But, before all that, let's take a look back at some of the many acts

who performed for us during the Glee Club tour of the UK.

John and the team travelled the length and breadth of the country

to find the best singing and dancing talent that the UK has to offer.

First stop, the North East of England and Newcastle.

Next stop was Glasgow,

where John was checking out the talent north of the border.

# It's not about the money, money, money... #

Then it was straight back down to Manchester,

with more groups giving it their all.

John and the team then headed off to London

to see what the Glee Clubs in the capital city could come up with.

Let's go and listen to some music!

Next, they were off to Bristol,

to check out the best of the West Country's glee clubs,

before heading to Cardiff to see what was on offer there.

Who's next?

Then it was a quick trip across to Belfast, to see what

the Northern Irish glee clubs could come up with, before heading

down to Brighton, to complete the talent search of the UK.

# I keep coming back... #

The standard was high,

but it was then up to John to select the 24 successful glee clubs

who were invited to perform again at the judges' auditions.

Now, you may have noticed, Sam and Mark aren't here, but don't worry,

they will be joining us very soon for the heats and live shows.

But, in the meantime, keeping a close eye on proceedings

and making those all-important decisions were our resident experts.

So let's take a moment to meet the people

who will decide the fate of our groups.

It's our judges.

Carrie and David are two of the UK's best-known celebrity vocal coaches.

That was fantastic.

That was a world-class performance.

They've worked with pop artists including Take That,

The Saturdays, Marvin Humes and even Gwyneth Paltrow.

Celebrity vocal and performance coach John has worked with

a variety of stars, including JLS, Leona Lewis, Olly Murs

and Frankie Sandford.

He's also worked behind-the-scenes on top shows

like The Voice and The X Factor.

Helping Carrie, David and John decide who should go through

to the heats were some very special expert guests.

Let's meet them.

Soul singer and presenter Dionne Bromfield has been nominated

for a MOBO Award, has recorded two albums

and also finds time to present CBBC's Friday Download.

Is that another one you play on the breakfast show?

I do play that on the radio, as well, Dionne. We're so in sync!

West End star Kerry Ellis has had lead roles in Wicked,

Les Miserables, We Will Rock You and Oliver!

and is also a successful recording artist.

And finally, Strictly Come Dancing professional Erin Boag

has put many celebrities through their paces,

wowed audiences with her dance moves

and stars regularly in spectacular sell-out shows.

Now for the serious bit, so pay attention.

Of the many groups who applied for Sport Relief Does Glee Club,

only the top 24 made it through to the judges' auditions.

Today, eight of those hopefuls will perform for our judges,

but only five will go through to the studio heats.

So let's meet the first act to perform for our judges.

I think you're going to recognise a certain feel about them

-from another group last year, but they're different.

-OK.

Now, tell me about the stripy socks. They are pretty cool.

-What, on your way here?

-No, in my house.

Oh, dear. So what have you done? Have you borrowed someone else's?

-No, I had two pairs.

You have lots of crazy socks in your collection? Good.

-Excellent. Happy with that?

-Very happy.

I like the overall package. I like your costumes.

But also, I like the way that you lit up

when you started singing, especially the second girl in here.

With the... I suppose they've all got pink tops on.

But it engaged me.

And it was really good, well done.

You know, there was a group who came runner-up last year

called Raveheart.

You guys remind me of a junior version of them.

You need... The only thing I would say to add, is just add

a bit more ferocity, because I think you've got it in you.

Guys, that was fabulous.

It's a real summer song and you were like a ray of sunshine on that stage.

Really uniform. I love the unison vocals.

It was like one big, fat voice, which sounds brilliant. That's brilliant.

If you get through, I want a little bit more harmony singing from you,

but the stuff that was in unison was brilliant.

-GIRLS:

Relieved it's over, or did you really enjoy it?

-Really enjoyed it.

What would you like to say back to the judges

for saying something nice to you?

-Thank you!

-Aww, short and sweet.

The only thing I would have liked, is because the unison was

-so belty and then the harmony was a bit...

-It was a bit sweet, yeah.

The harmony was a bit... Maybe it's the age of their voices.

That's the only reason why...

It might have been better to pick a lower harmony,

so that they could have kicked a bit more guts into that.

But, you know, to be honest,

to get that good unison singing is hard.

Next up, we have Figure 8 from Manchester.

I think this is why I brought them back.

Any bits you are particularly looking forward to,

or a bit nervous about with this performance?

-A bit nervous about the dancing.

-The dancing? Why's that?

Um, none of us are really dancers.

Have you made the choreography very complicated?

Not really complicated but we still... Yeah.

Just have to think about it all the time. OK.

I'm going to count to three and I want you all to go, "Pow!" Like that.

Right, that's what you call snap.

Snap is when you go...

FORCEFULLY: # Starships... #

At the moment it's like... WEAKLY: # Starships are meant to... #

it's a little bit droopy, choreographically.

The choreography is fine,

it's how you're executing the choreography.

Similarly, with the vocals, the vocals are beautiful,

but it's very legato and joined up. It needs snap.

So if you get through, I want you to think about,

"How do I put pow into the vocals and into the action?"

I go with Carrie. You need snap, you need attitude, you need swagger.

Don't hold anything back.

Don't save anything for when it's over,

cos when it's over its too late. Leave everything on the stage.

Leave everything in that performance. Don't hold back.

You've all got beautiful voices.

When you sing together it sounds really, really nice.

I think you girls should just smile more.

You've all got very pretty faces, so we want to see your teeth.

You there, are you the girl who started singing?

Um, I think with you, your voice was really, really nice.

But you're the first one that's going to sing on their own,

so people are going to look at you.

I just wanted you to be a bit more like,

"Yeah, I'm the first one singing and I'm going to own this."

But, girls, don't think just because the soloists are singing

that you're not going to be seen as well.

So just make sure everyone knows that.

So if we see you again, I need to see POW, yeah?

So they said you needed POW.

-Do you think you've got it in you?

-ALL: Yeah.

-It's there, is it?

How are you going to bring out that KA-POW.

A bit more energy, I think. Like, pow.

They're all doing it out there now, but that POW thing,

they all went like that.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

-Where's that aggression when they're going...?

It only takes one of them for the rest of them to actually go,

-"Oh, I'm going to do it now."

-Yes, you're right.

But until that one person does it, they're all just going to...

Good comments for both Hi' JinX and Figure 8 there,

but still lots to improve on if they make it to the studio heats.

Next up, another two groups get their chance to impress the judges.

None of us could stop smiling, and that tells me something.

Great harmonies, and you've got some wonderful voices.

You're a proper urban glee club.

I wasn't sure about them.

I wanted to bring them back especially for a second,

third and fourth opinion.

I think he's born to be on the stage. Wow.

There is something about you that really makes us smile.

I actually looked down the line and everyone was full-on teeth

and everything smiling.

-It's cos we're on camera.

Actually, quite often, it's the reverse that happens.

Judges will sit there with their poker faces,

but none of us could stop smiling.

That tells me something.

So well done.

Let me tell you what I love.

I mean, you've got the gospel, R&B riffing,

you've got the hip-hop swagger, you've got the pop cool.

You're a proper urban glee club.

If you get through, you have to do so much work

between now and then to tighten everything up.

You guys are sensational.

I loved each and everyone of you.

I loved your song, I loved the attitude,

I loved the way that you used the entire floor.

You're marvellous, all of you were marvellous.

But, Shem, it's like you ruled the floor. It was fantastic. Fantastic.

But, I have to say, there's a part of me that would rather that

than to have a glee club that just sits in the middle.

They've got good use of props, their ensemble sound, I found,

was very well blended.

They had a lot of animation, so I said,

What I admire about it is the fact that people don't know

until they start taking apart ABBA harmonies just how complex they are.

They always seem really easy to sing till...

till you try and sing them and then they're not.

And you actually had them.

You actually got them all and you got them all in. You did them well.

Thank you.

The brilliant part about it was the a cappella.

The way you finished at the end showed how tight your harmonies are

and how really on it you are with your vocals, so well done.

I think you could just relax a little bit

and have a bit more fun with it.

Just relax your performance a little bit and link the song to the moves.

Like the guys were saying, it's one performance,

so you need to link those dance moves with those vocals,

which doesn't help with the breathing, cos it's tough.

You get out of breath when you're doing those big notes.

You're moving around the stage.

Maybe simplify the moves a little bit

so you can concentrate on your singing. But I loved it.

You looked great. Great faces. I love the colours. Great harmonies.

-You've got some wonderful voices.

-Well done, guys.

So you're happy with how it went.

-Yeah.

-Did any bits go wrong or...?

We have to work on our moves, putting them with our song,

cos we were getting out of breath a lot of the time.

Do you find that as you're performing with that routine,

that you do get a bit tired towards the end?

I think it was nerves as well.

Maybe just less movement, they needed.

Towards the end they did get a little bit out of breath,

-and that's when the tuning slightly went.

-Yeah.

It's difficult for them singing with mics.

-They might not have sung with mics.

-Not used to hearing themselves.

They're used to listening to themselves acoustically,

and to suddenly to hear themselves with mics on.

Perhaps they stopped listening.

# There's you. #

Four of today's acts have now performed for the judges,

but there are four more groups still to see, so don't go anywhere.

The breadth of harmonies from top to bottom are huge. How old are you?

How on Earth you're able to sing those low notes at 15 is beyond me.

To sing those notes, you should have a beard.

For me, it was just refreshing to see an all-male group.

No, that's the one thing I'd be really interested to hear them

sing a classic sort of, well, One Direction number or a boyband,

-something with a little pop, rock, soulful. Something different.

I'm so looking forward to this. OK.

Very musical theatre. Obviously they're doing a number from Matilda.

So they're very confident.

I really enjoyed their delivery

and I thought they'd be worth having back.

Why have you chosen to do a musical theatre song rather than a pop song?

Well, we all love acting, singing and dancing,

so we do, like, the three things in it, so it's really good for us.

-You get to show off all your talent.

-Yeah.

I believe the judges are ready to see you,

so, Inferno, go that way, and set the stage on fire!

You can tell that cos it really comes across.

I think, use that a bit more.

Use the times that you know each other outside of performing

and bring a little bit of that to your performance,

you know, when you go out together and you go to the shops or whatever.

Just remember those feelings and bring that to the performance,

cos it'll make it sound a bit natural.

I loved it, I thought you had great energy,

and your facial expressions are just wonderful.

-So thank you very much.

What that song required was attack and energy and attitude

and it had to be very tongue-in-cheek,

and you hit it perfectly.

You ticked all the boxes and hit all the marks on that song.

It was a great physical and facial performance, and I think that

you guys are a great Gree... Glee Club and I love what you do.

-A great Greek Glee Club.

John's Greek. He thinks that he just wants to bring a little bit of that

into it, you know. They're not Greek...

When I saw you girls in Manchester, you performance was slick,

it was focused, disciplined and you're so consistent

cos you did it again today.

-Thank you.

-How are you all feeling now it's over?

-Good. Great.

-They said really nice things, didn't they?

-Yeah!

And so all those faces that you've been working on, that paid off then.

Yeah.

Something that I think we are finding with the Glee Clubs is that you

find there's two or three that are really strong,

and then there's always one or two, sometimes three who are weaker.

With that group I did feel like, "Gosh, wherever I look, they're

"all really able to give 100%." They're not looking self conscious.

Yeah, they all committed, and you could see

that they're all really confident, which was really nice.

There wasn't that, you know, the shy one hiding at the back

and the confident one at the front, it was a nice dynamic

between the lot of them.

Glowing comments for the boys, React,

and equally great comments for the girls, Inferno.

Coming up, the final two acts take to the stage.

Will All Sorts and Musicality hold their nerve when it really matters?

Your voice is really, really good, it's really theatrical.

That was so well rehearsed.

You cannot lose energy at all throughout the performance.

Right, next up we have All Sorts, and, yeah,

the name sounds familiar as well. I think last series they were Diva 8

and I think six members are the same.

Everywhere I look, I can see myself!

So you know when you go in there, it's quite a dark stage

and you've got the four judges in front of you.

What are you going to do to impress them?

-Just smile.

-Smile a lot.

And perform as much as we can.

-What did you think?

-Yeah, good.

There was so much variety going on.

You had three groups at one point, I didn't quite know where to look.

And you're all doing something fantastic.

And then all of a sudden... It's Rosie, isn't it?

-You did a little bass over there. It was great. Well done.

-Thank you.

Somewhere in the middle, I think during the break down, maybe

when the beatboxing started...

I loved the beatboxing idea, I just found that the vocals dipped

a little bit there, lost that energy.

Kind of picked it up at the end again.

So, just bear that in mind that you cannot lose energy at all

throughout the performance. You have to finish as strong as you start.

-But well done over all.

-Thank you.

I think it was a really brave choice of song,

and I thought that you executed it very well.

I loved the whole cup song thing going on with the thighs.

I'm on with that, I know what that's about. Very good.

It lost it a little bit at the end in terms of your timing,

you were like "Whoa, we've lost the timing," but overall,

I mean, I think for the complexity of the arrangement you did really well.

What sort of things do you think they said that were fair?

What do you think they said that wasn't fair?

I think all their comments were very fair

and I think we did lose a little bit of energy,

but overall we did like their comments cos they were very good.

We'll take all the comments on board.

If we come back next time, we'll be so much better.

It's like something little kids would do

at the end of the school year for their parents.

Lovely, very well done. High standard for them,

but I don't think they're ready for this type of competition.

They don't bring that wow factor.

I think you're probably right.

These guys are very determined.

That was so well rehearsed.

I mean, literally, every person's hand, foot, everything,

in absolute co-ordination. Fantastic choreography, lovely vocals.

My only criticism is that the song itself felt at times

like it was too low for you.

-But apart from that, absolutely lovely.

Yeah, when I saw Mr Blue Sky I thought,

"Here's three minutes of my life I'll never get back."

And I was actually really surprised. I loved it. I enjoyed it.

You guys looked like you were loving it.

I felt comfortable,

I felt like I was watching a group of performers

who were used to performing together,

who really knew what it was like to take to the stage and just deliver.

Your choreography was tight, your staging was absolutely inch-perfect,

and your vocals were really locked.

I liked it, much to my surprise.

I didn't think I was going to like it, cos it's not my favourite song,

but it's grown on me.

even down to the way you guys are dressed, it was wicked.
