Episode 4 Sport Relief Does Glee Club

This is Glee Club, CBBC's musical spectacular,

and it's all in support of Sport Relief.

The best 24 young glee clubs from across the UK

made it to the judges' auditions, but only 15 have survived.

Today, Hi'JinX!, VoxBox and The Gleeks

will face the judges again,

but will they score enough points

to secure a top spot on the leaderboard

and a place in the live semifinal?

-Yes, it is great to be back for a new series

of Sport Relief Does Glee Club, but more importantly,

it's great to have another excuse

to go looking for Britain's top young performers

and, just because we weren't at the judges' auditions,

don't think that we haven't been

keeping a beady eye on this year's hopefuls.

Yes, our casting team have been up and down the country,

keeping us up-to-date with all the amazing talent on offer.

We promise you, you are going to be blown away

by the effort and dedication of this year's groups.

And someone who knows exactly how hard it is to get on this stage

is a woman who has sung in front of an audience,

loves to tread the boards and is rarely off our tellies.

-Oh, no, it's not that annoying one from...?

-No.

-No. OK.

She's spent most of this year all over the place

or confronting her nightmares,

so she shouldn't have a problem joining us here.

As Sam just said, you've been very busy since we last saw you.

Yes, I've been filming a new series

of Naomi's Nightmares Of Nature in America and Africa.

-I spent some time in Australia, working all over the place.

four people with a combined age of 176,

which is only a couple of years older than Bruce Forsyth.

What they lack in youthful exuberance and stamina,

they make up with knowledge and experience.

Well, at least that is what it says here.

Carrie, what are you hoping for from this year's acts?

I think we are looking for originality

and we are looking for groups that have

progressed as the competition goes on.

We want to see them improve this year.

OK, well, with all that in mind, let's get this show on the road.

Judges, if you could make your way over to your seats

and whilst they do that,

let's find out a little bit more about our fabulous foursome.

They are THE top coaches in the industry

and have worked with massive acts like Madonna and Take That.

It's the judges!

Carrie and David are vocal coaches to the stars.

They have worked with an impressive list of pop artists

including The Saturdays, Marvin Humes

and even Gwyneth Paltrow.

John has worked behind the scenes on top shows like The X Factor

and The Voice, and with a variety of celebrities,

including JLS and Leona Lewis.

Choreographer Sisco has worked with

Alexandra Burke and Kylie Minogue, to name but two.

He also puts the contestants through their paces

backstage on The X Factor.

-Now for the important bit.

15 groups have made it through to the heats.

Today, three of those acts will battle it out for our experts,

who will be scoring them on vocal ability, creativity and performance.

All four judges will be giving marks out of ten

for each of the disciplines,

so there are plenty of points to be won.

And in the unlikely event of a tie,

head judge Carrie will decide who gets the medals.

The acts with the top five scores across the heats

will then compete in the live final,

where it will be up to you at home to vote for your favourite.

And the winners will take home this fantastic

You know what, that thing never fails to surprise me.

It's an assault on the senses

and probably the only trophy on telly that changes every year.

Yeah, but, Mark, that is what makes it unique,

what makes it special, even magical.

Yeah, well, I could think of three other words to describe it.

-All right! Calm down, will you?

Let's find out how Naomi is getting on with the groups backstage.

Let's come to you, Hi'JinX!, first.

What have you been working on since we last saw you?

We've just been working really hard on the songs for today.

Did they say anything to you last time that you took away to work on?

More harmonies and solos.

-And have you put those in?

-Yes.

-Over to VoxBox. Hi!

How are you feeling about performing not just in front of the judges,

-but this time in front of the studio audience?

-Nervous. Really nervous.

We're scared.

-Do you think you will be all right?

-ALL: Yes.

-Confidence between you!

And over to The Gleeks.

You have chosen quite complicated dance moves and song words.

Are you worried about that?

No, because we have done a lot, we've tried to practise it

as much together and we are like a triple threat,

so we work well when they are all mixed together,

so I think it is going to work out better for us.

I love your fighting talk! Good luck to you all!

Now, our acts arrived in Glasgow yesterday, so we sent them

out for the day so they could get to know each other a little bit better.

Let's see how they got on.

When our Glee Clubs met up for the first time in Glasgow,

they were racing to make an impression.

But before they got to grips with go-karting,

there was a chance to meet each other and perhaps reveal

some behind-the-scenes secrets.

-What are you guys wearing?

-Our colour theme is red, red and white.

I'll go dead slow at first,

loads of people will pass me and they'll say it's time up.

Just expect me to go past you five times.

I'm really scared!

Before hitting the track, it was time to mix up the glee clubs

and get on some race gear.

When the groups came, when they told us to split up, I was like...

SHE GASPS "New people! Like, whoa!"

You're not allowed to let people overtake you.

-You're supposed to be the overtaker.

-He was like...

He was flying everywhere.

Did you crash?

Well, I kind of crashed three times.

Hi'JinX!, that's who I met first, and they were so lovely.

I think VoxBox was like the most...

-They were really confident, weren't they?

-Yeah.

I think I'm OK at dancing and singing more than go-karting.

-I wasn't very good today.

-We're not professionals yet!

Well done, guys! What a fantastic start to the show.

Let's see what the judges thought.

Carrie, what did you think of that performance?

Well, I've got something really positive to say to each of you

and a bit of advice for each of you.

For Hi'JinX!, you were the most rehearsed of our three groups.

It was very clean, very good to watch.

I think you need more acting energy.

I wasn't sure whether you were trying to be happy or sad.

Some were happy, some were sad,

I needed your faces to tell the story a little bit more.

For VoxBox, I loved the vocal build.

I loved the way you started down the register, really low,

the way you built the harmony was beautiful.

You guys just need to be more accurate.

It's a little bit pitchy in places and also, choreographically,

it just needs to be a little bit more accurate,

so that's about rehearsing.

And finally, for The Gleeks, you had

the best acting of all the groups today, for me,

but I wanted to hear a warmer sound,

so that's something I want you to really look at,

is how do we make the actual sound of our voices warmer?

Thank you, Carrie. David, did you like what you saw?

Yeah, I did like what I saw.

I mean, I agree with pretty much what Carrie said.

I thought that that your stuff, Hi'JinX!,

was very well rehearsed, but quite safe.

I would like to see you taking a bit more chance,

be a little bit more daring.

VoxBox, again, loved the build from the bottom up of the harmony,

but, you know, really, really listen to each other and focus.

Some of you were really in there,

some of you were looking around a bit.

Do your own performance and trust one another.

And The Gleeks, loved your performance, really did like it.

Work on your internal dynamic of your harmony.

When it gets to the chorus, everything up to there was bang-on,

got to the chorus and I lost the melody.

So work on that internally, OK, so that you can hear every note.

-Sisco, your thoughts?

-For me,

it was The Gleeks. You guys looked the most polished.

I felt your sound was as good as your presentation.

It was full and it looked well rehearsed.

With Hi'JinX!, it started off really, really good

and then I felt, when you got to the chorus,

you lost some volume from some of the singers.

There's eight of you and at one point

it sounded like there was only four singing,

so really work on the projection of your voice

and articulating the lyrics, so you sound like a club.

VoxBox, I love your choreography.

I think you guys are secret dancers in there.

But really practise the vocals as much as the choreography

because, at the moment, the presentation

of the choreography was better than the vocal ability.

Cheers, Sisco. John, which act did it for you?

Well, first of all, before I even say that,

I am so proud of each and every group up there.

Just coming back here is such an honour,

to see the level of talent in front of me.

You all did excellently. Really great start to this show.

But, for this round, I think, just purely for the melodic value

-and what it did to me, I would say this round goes to Hi'JinX!.

-Cool.

So, after round one, The Gleeks are in the lead with 84 points,

closely followed by VoxBox on 82

and Hi'JinX! on 71.

But with 120 points available to each group in round two,

it could all change.

Hi'JinX!, did you enjoy it all, were you happy out there?

-Yes, definitely.

-You were.

Carrie thought you were the most rehearsed,

John said that you were his favourite.

How do you feel about that?

Good.

But Sisco thought maybe you need to work on your projection.

How are you going to do that?

-Work together.

-Just give it a go.

-Did you enjoy it?

-Yes.

-You did. You are nodding. Good.

-Are you looking forward to your next song?

-Yes.

-I hope so.

Sisco said that maybe your dancing wasn't as strong as your vocals.

Do you have some strong vocals hidden in there

that you're going to shine out in your next song?

Yeah, I agree with him, because we put too much...

At one point, we put too much power in our dancing,

that for a moment, we almost forgot about our singing and our harmonies.

So, next time, we're just going to even it out

and give a little surprise.

I like the way you're talking. A little surprise, there.

Over to The Gleeks - Carrie thought you had the most acting, didn't she?

She said you were the best at acting, had the most warmth.

David thought maybe your melody got a little bit lost in there.

-Do you agree with that?

-I think so.

It was more to do with our harmony lines,

it made it come across as if we'd lost the melody.

What about in your next song? What can we expect?

We have a little something up our sleeve, extra,

as a little surprise.

Guys, that was fabulous.

It's a real summer song

and you were like a ray of sunshine on that stage.

Really uniform, I loved the unison vocals.

It was like one big fat voice, which sounds brilliant.

The only thing I would say to add is just add a bit more ferocity,

cos I think you've got it in you.

will we be seeing more new socks?

Yeah, they should be really proud of it.

There was a kind of youthful energy and naivety

that I think brought the song to a different place

and gave it a different perspective.

And I really liked what you did.

Previously, I know it has been remarked that you're not all

giving it the same amount of vocal energy.

I really felt like, that time, you were trying to match each other

and that really made a difference to the performance.

You should be very proud of yourselves.

ALL: Thank you!

Sisco, you think they nailed it?

I think you guys did brilliantly - what David said about having

a youthful energy is exactly what it was. It was great to see.

You guys are so adorable.

I just think I want you guys to do a little more.

Make sure you rehearse, rehearse, rehearse,

so when you sing, from that first note,

you blow them away.

John, what did you think of the vocals?

Yeah, I think, overall, they were good.

I think they weren't blended as well as they were in your previous song,

a little bit shouty in places.

They were parts where you were a bit unsure,

I was losing you a bit.

But overall, the energy of the vocals was quite good.

-Can I...?

Oh, yeah, sorry, mate.

I know what you're saying, but I think that that song...

To me, it's not about blending and smoothness.

It is about energy and it's about an exuberance.

So I don't actually think the song suffers from not being blended.

Well, I just said on your first performance,

you weren't acting and I wanted you to act.

And you've come back onto that stage and acted your way through that song,

When VoxBox first performed in Manchester,

John was full of praise.

Got a lovely sound, good dynamic, good blend, good energy,

great solo...you did well.

At the judges' auditions in Glasgow, it was all smiles from the group

as they met their idol, Dionne Bromfield.

Do you need to get it out of your system?

But the experts spotted where there was some room for improvement.

You need to keep the accuracy going when you're giving it the energy.

Is it Tevin?

The tone of your voice is lovely. I do think you're a bit young,

so you can't control it properly yet.

How did it feel when you were up there?

-Um...my mum.

She says it's good, but you need to start showing up more.

-I dunno - sometimes, I'm busy.

I thought it was good, but...

Is it Tevin, the only boy in the group?

You've got such a lovely tone and all you need is some confidence -

believe that you're a great singer, because I hear it,

but you don't believe it.

So when you sing, we don't believe it.

If you make a mistake, who cares?

We don't look at choreography - make a mistake look great.

Be like, "Hey, I did that!"

Do whatever you need to do and that's, I think...

You guys, work on each other -

if you make each other feel brilliant,

you'll perform brilliantly.

Was that good? Yes, but it could've been great,

and we didn't quite make it.

-OK?

-OK - Carrie, was that a good song choice?

I think it was the perfect song choice for you guys.

I felt that it was soulful, it was joyful.

I think you have so much potential.

Great soloists - you do need to believe in yourselves.

David, were you impressed with VoxBox?

You know what? Previously, in your first performance,

I said I thought the harmonies were a little pitchy.

I take it all back, because that was really tight, really unified,

the blend was fantastic.

The way you held that long note, that was excellent.

Yeah, absolutely. I just have to reiterate -

the potential in you guys is phenomenal.

You could be absolutely outstanding. That was a very good performance.

It made me feel really happy, because it's my first time doing a solo -

last time, Tevin did one and he knows what it feels like.

But cos I did it this time,

and then...I got really good comments,

I felt really happy about that.

Tevin, Sisco said you need to believe in yourself.

If you get through, how are you going to be more confident?

I'll just have to pretend that the audience isn't there,

as if I'm just singing in my bedroom.

Let's meet The Gleeks.

The Gleeks lived up to their name when the first performed in London.

John was amazed by their singing, dancing, acting...and spelling.

# S-U-P-E-R-C-A-L-I-F-R-A-G... #

That is fantastic - to spell out that word...my goodness!

# Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious... #

And they didn't get tongue-tied

on stage in Glasgow in front of the judges.

# ..alidocious! #

I loved the choreography. It didn't impinge on the vocals.

The vocals were still strong. You didn't sound out of breath.

-Absolutely great.

-It was just nuts!

You made an old song sound really young.

The first group going through to the studio heats is...

But can The Gleeks deliver as high a standard in the heats

or will they fluff their lines?

-Both groups sounded really good.

-They sounded really good.

-So you're feeling the pressure?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

We're excited at the same time cos, obviously,

everyone's in the same position, really, aren't they?

What's your best dance move?

Oh, my word, that's too complicated!

We've become a lot closer, cos there's different age groups.

We're like a little family, really.

I think we've got a good chance.

The choreography in one of our pieces is really good.

-As well as the vocals.

-Yeah.

Just saying...!

They are our last act to perform for the judges.

-Did you enjoy that performance?

-Well, variety is the spice of life.

And that was all spice - that was excellent, excellent, excellent.

Grease happens to be my all-time favourite musical,

so your performance was very good - high energy

and that's what I saw in you guys from day one

and I saw it again today.

-Well done.

Carrie, your thoughts?

I think this was you in your comfort zone.

This was a song that is just perfect for you,

it showed your personality and you really shone.

Nice one.

David, do you like the fact that musical theatre

-is being represented in the show?

-I think it's essential.

I think it's essential that all areas of Glee are represented.

You guys, it seems to me your mission in life is to breathe new life

into songs that are almost on the verge of dying

from being over-sung.

You did it last time with Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

This time, I looked at what you were singing

and thought "Oh, no, not that again."

And I LOVED it!

I loved your choreography, the fact you breathed new energy into it.

That was brilliant.

And Sisco, what did you think of it?

I thought it was really intelligent, how you distributed the song,

cos it's no secret, that's a very difficult song to sing,

such a tongue-twister.

I love the way you guys performed, it was a pleasure to watch.

all the tongue-twisters in it.

Do you think he could have done any better than you?

You had very complicated moves and words in your song,

and yet Carrie mentioned how you were in your comfort zone.

How do you get so relaxed, doing such a tricky performance?

I think it's just cos we enjoy it and when we enjoy it,

we give it our all.

Have you done oodles of rehearsal?

Yeah, we have done oodles of rehearsal!

And, Nick, I must mention your beatboxing -

could you give us a little bit?

(I'm losing my voice!)

I think we've loved it today, cos there's been a bit of pop,

a little soul, some musical theatre, so we've had a bit of everything.
