We searched every corner of the country

for Britain's top young performers

and, let me tell you, we haven't been disappointed.

Backstage, three more acts are ready and waiting to impress our judges.

And who better to keep an eye on them

and offer any last-minute advice that a woman, who,

if she was 30 years younger, would definitely be taking part.

She'll not be happy that you said that!

It's the one and only Naomi Wilkinson.

Why are you two looking so smug today?

Funny you should ask, cos Sam and I have only gone

and invented a new sport in honour of Sport Relief. So...

Wow, that's incredible! Tell me about it.

I mean, do you've to be in a team to play it? Is it high impact?

I suppose you've got to be mega-tough to play this one?

I mean, could you break any bones? Grrr!

-Naomi, no, no, no, no, you have to be far more skilful than that.

Well, judges, while we reassess our wardrobe, after that, you guys,

if you'd like to take your seats. Whilst they doing that,

let's find out a little bit more about our perfect panel.

They are THE top coaches in the industry

and have worked with massive acts, like Madonna and Take That.

It's the judges!

John has worked behind-the-scenes on shows like the X Factor,

and The Voice, and with a variety of celebrities,

including JLS and Leona Lewis.

Choreographer Sisco has worked with Alexandra Burke

and Kylie Minogue, to name but two.

He also puts the contestants

through their paces backstage on the X Factor.

Carrie and David are vocal coaches to the stars.

They've worked with an impressive list of pop artists,

including The Saturdays, Marvin Humes and even Gwyneth Paltrow.

It's the judges.

-You see. They're not just pretty faces.

-Now for the important bit.

15 groups have made it through to the heats today.

Three of those acts will battle it out for our experts,

who'll be scoring them on vocal ability, creativity and performance.

All four judges will be giving

marks out of ten for each of the disciplines,

so there are plenty of points to be won.

And in the unlikely event of a tie,

head judge Carrie will decide who gets the medals Hi, Carrie.

The acts with the top five scores across the heats

will then compete in the live finals,

where it'll be up to you at home to vote for your favourites.

Let's find out how Naomi is getting on with the groups backstage.

Yes, I am backstage with Miss Chief, Inferno and Unity 7.

Miss Chief, let's talk to you first.

Have you been up to a lot of mischief since we last saw you?

-Yeah, Yes.

-Always. Look at your cheeky faces.

Now, Ellie... Where's Ellie? There you are.

You broke your foot, didn't you? What happened?

I broke my foot about a month before the performance

and, um, the rehearsals were a bit limited, because I couldn't do much.

I could watch and learn, but I couldn't really do anything.

Are you feeling fit now and ready for today's performance?

-Yeah.

-I hope it goes well.

As if it wasn't hot enough in here, with all the pre-singing nerves,

we have Inferno in here.

Now, I understand, Inferno,

you have a secret weapon in amongst you, don't you?

Who is it?

-Saskia.

-Saskia, are you a secret weapon?

-Because I do a flip.

-Are you including that in the performance today?

-Yeah.

Whoo! How does that feel?

It's a bit like nerve-racking, but I'm excited about it.

-Are you sure you're going to pull it off?

-Yeah.

You guys haven't been together as long as some of the other glee clubs

so has that put pressure on you to get better quickly?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

-How have you managed that?

-We've been quite good friends.

We work together, so it's quite good.

-All supporting one another.

-Yeah.

-That's what we like to hear.

And over to Unity 7, who also, I think,

have a secret weapon in amongst you, don't you?

Who's the main singer?

Me.

And don't you have a little trick you like to do before you sing?

Um, this is so embarrassing.

I always take in a strawberry milkshake.

-Why?

-It's, kind of, a psychological thing.

I have to have a strawberry milkshake before a rehearsal.

-It makes you feel better?

-It does. It really helps me out.

How are you all feeling about performing

in front of a live studio audience and in a TV studio?

-We're very excited.

-Yeah.

-You're just looking forward to it?

-Yeah.

-The nerves are not getting the better of you?

-No.

Let's see how steady your hands are.

-We've all got the same nail polish.

-Oh, you have!

-Who does the nail polish?

-Me.

-It's you, is it?

You're in charge of buying the nail polish. That looks lovely, girls.

We wanted him to.

Our glee clubs all arrived in Glasgow yesterday.

We sent them out for the day, so they could size up the competition.

So let's check out how they got on.

For Miss Chief, Inferno and Unity 7, it was morning at the museum,

as they met for the first time in Glasgow's Kelvingrove.

ALL: We are Miss Chief and we're from London.

-ALL:

-We are Unity 7 and we're from Milton Keynes.

ALL: We are Inferno and we're from Grimsby. Whoo!

But before they were let loose on the museum's treasure hunt,

there was time to get to know each other a little bit better.

BOTH: I like your tops.

So, are you scared about tomorrow? How are you feeling?

We're not scared, but slightly nervous.

-I think the adrenaline will be like...

-Yeah.

We got told we were going to an art gallery and we were like, "Oh, OK,

"that's brilliant."

We pulled up here and everyone was like,

"It looks like a castle."

THEY SQUEAL

I thought they'd be scary,

cos they are older than me and everything.

But when I got to know them a bit more,

I was like, "They're really nice."

-Miss Chief are just cool.

-Cool hairstyles.

Look how big the giraffe's leg is.

-When we saw the giraffe...

-Yeah.

-..we tried to take a picture.

We thought we were the first team.

-We were at the wrong leg.

-We were at the wrong leg!

Hanging out with my mate, Queen Victoria.

-A seven-hour journey.

In the museum, I saw faces hanging and I really like that.

It's strange, cos we got on really well with them

-and we have to compete against them tomorrow.

Fantastic. OK, let's see what the judges thought.

Carrie, today's first challenge. What did you think to the vocals?

For Miss Chief, first of all,

I would like to say it was a game of two halves for you guys.

The first half was amazing.

The second half, when you got to the chorus,

you were in two different keys, which is quite difficult to

listen to when you're not singing in the right key.

But the first half was fantastic

For Inferno,

you had the most fantastic unity about your performance.

Everywhere I looked,

everyone was doing exactly the right thing at the right point.

Your sound is a little squeaky for me. If you get through,

I'd like you to get really think about smoothing it out a little.

The ending, having said that, was beautiful vocally.

And for Unity 7, your sound was so smooth vocally -

beautiful, beautiful sound -

as a result of that, the movement, for me,

needed a little bit more snap.

So even though you've got smooth vocals,

don't let that smoothness go to your choreography

Cheers, Carrie. David, were you entertained?

Yeah, I found them very entertaining.

All of them really gave a lot

and tried their best. I'd like to

first talk about Miss Chief.

I really like your sound, it's a very urban sound.

I think what Carrie was saying about the chorus was right.

The verse though, I'm looking at the verse and thinking that, if you're

getting that as your lowest mark, then you're going to be really good.

The verse was strong.

You got to the chorus and lost a bit of energy,

but work on the good stuff.

Come back more confident for the next round.

You guys, it's not squeaky - it's bright.

I like the brightness of that. It's very poppy, it's very bright.

It's as bright as your smiling faces, which I really liked.

I thought the harmonies on the chorus were inconsistent -

they were in and out a bit.

But you kept the kind of joy of your performance.

Like Carrie, the thing I wrote for you was "very, very smooth".

On the chorus,

I felt like halfway through the chorus, it suddenly took off

and, again, if you keep that, if that becomes your lowest benchmark,

then you'll put in a really strong performance on the second round.

John, your thoughts, please.

I think overall there was an energy level with each one of you.

It was very good. What's your name, right there?

-Sade.

-Sade. Incredible, incredible performance energy.

You've got some real performance attitude, so I love that.

Yeah, otherwise, very good.

The only thing I would say is for vocals, especially

the chorus, I would love to have heard a little bit more blend.

There was a lot of oversinging, sometimes shouty.

I would love to have heard that wall of sound that Carrie talks about.

So keep that in mind for next time.

Sisco, which act did it for you?

To be honest,

I've got a note for everyone.

I just think that,

getting to this point, you have to sing like you

need this, like you want this.

I need to see that charisma. I need to see that vocal blend

smooth. I need to see that choreography sharp, precise.

We all need to take take a step up.

You lot, you gave it some, didn't you?

Hey, Sade, what did you feel about what John said to you?

I felt like, yeah,

I really liked it because I got picked out from everybody.

-That must feel good.

Now Carrie thought you lot had fantastic unity,

but maybe there was some inconsistency in your harmonies.

What have you got in store for your next song?

Just fun and excitement and we hope we can make them smile

-and bring marks out.

-That must feel quite good.

-ALL: Yes.

David and Carrie said, "Very, very smooth, but you might need

"a bit more snap." How will you do that?

We'll just give 100% in all our moves

and just give it our all and show the judges that we can do it.

David, what did you think?

That was full of energy, full of life. I really like the singing.

I really liked the energy and the attitude of the rapping.

One of the things that I picked up on on your first round way back

when you came for the auditions was that

I couldn't understand what you sang. Your diction wasn't clear.

Here, there was a real uniformity of diction,

and it meant that you were really tight.

So I'm pleased with that, well done.

You should be pleased with yourself.

APPLAUSE

John, do you like Miss Chief's style of performance?

Yes, this is the Miss Chief I saw in London, the Miss Chief

we saw at the judges' audition and this is you, in a nutshell -

attitude, energy, urban - everything was good.

You'd give Jessie J a run for her money, for sure, after that one.

Well done.

APPLAUSE

Cisco, what did you think of the vocals there?

I think you have to be careful with your breathing techniques.

If you're not singing from your diaphragm,

you won't get a good sound.

And you guys looked and sounded out of breath.

I think that, collectively, I wanted to enjoy it more.

But the two first raps saved your performance.

I thought that's the energy that I want to see.

So I think you guys have to really go back and see,

what are my strengths, what are my weaknesses? And just play on that.

Because it was a bit shaky, if I was completely honest.

Carrie, what did you like about that performance?

I love your energy. I love the urban feel of what you do.

First girl rapper, that's Sade, isn't it? Absolutely amazing.

For me, I would have just let you rap all the way through,

rather than feeling like you've got to hand this much out to this person,

this much out to that person.

Rapping is your thing, so therefore, let you do the rapping.

Everybody else can then really concentrate on their singing.

But for me, I loved the performance. it had loads of energy. Brilliant.

Carrie, David, John, all thought you had lovely energy, well done.

So, he said you looked and sounded a bit out of breath.

What do you want to say to him?

We understand, because it is a big thing to know

when your breath is meant to come in,

but it is something you have to learn from your mistakes.

Do you think you've done enough to get through to the next round?

-Hopefully.

-Everyone's hopeful. Keep your fingers crossed, you lot.

-ALL: Yes!

Let's take a look at Inferno

and their amazing journey to the studio heats.

-What's the name of the group?

-ALL: Inferno.

Is that cos you're on fire?

Inferno were like a ball of energy

when they performed for the first time in Manchester.

# Nobody else has got to put it right for me

And Inferno continued to light up the stage at the judges' auditions

in Glasgow.

What that song required was attack and energy and attitude,

and it had to be tongue-in-cheek, and you hit it perfectly.

I loved it. I thought you had great energy,

and your facial expressions are just wonderful.

-So all those faces that you've been working on paid off then?

-ALL: YEAH!

The fourth group going through to the Studio Heats is...

Inferno.

THEY SCREAM

But are Inferno confident they can leave the judges

with a smile on their faces in the Studio Heats?

-Anything you're very nervous about?

-No.

No. That was a very confident no.

Do you think you're better than the other groups here today?

-I think we're all on a par, to be honest.

-On a par?

So how are the judges going to make the decision between you all?

I think it depends on the amount of effort we all put in, to be honest.

-Got to think positive.

-Knock them dead.

-Fingers crossed.

-Yeah.

-John, what did you think of that performance?

I think this is where Inferno come into their own.

You girls really own musical theatre.

That was focused, that was energised,

that was very professional

and I don't think, at all, it lost any energy from start to finish,

so well done.

-Sisco, was that a good song choice?

-It was.

You guys are musical theatre-based

and you played to your strengths, which is good to see,

because we are always saying play to your strengths and you guys did.

It sounded great. I loved the arrangement with the choreography.

It looked very polished, which is what I want to see. So, great job.

-Carrie, were you impressed with Inferno?

-Really impressed.

I felt you guys were totally in your comfort zone,

everybody on the stage acting.

And actually the squeaky singing I talked about earlier

works for this kind of song.

Your challenge is what to do when it's not this kind of song?

Cos this is totally where you sit.

ALL: Thank you. David, finally your thoughts, please.

It's not squeaky, it's bright.

-We will disagree on that.

-Lots of acting through the song.

The dancing was really excellent,

particularly your dancing at the end. I really loved that.

You did a show rather than giving us a song.

And it was very, very, very rehearsed.

-ALL: Yes!

So, you had some really positive comments,

What do you feel about that performance?

I think we're more suited to this song than the last one,

because we're more musical theatre.

And, Saskia, I need to ask you, did all the moves come off

-according to plan?

-Yeah, they did.

-Can you teach me how to do that flip later on?

-Yeah!

I'd quite like to learn that.

What you laughing at?

Unity 7 were in fine voice when they first performed in London.

I really, really enjoyed that. I liked it a lot.

And after meeting John, they were full of confidence going into

the Judge's Auditions in Glasgow.

The panel felt there was one specific area

where Unity 7 could improve.

You know what I loved about you guys as a group is that the song

you picked and the choreography you did told a story.

And it made me feel what you were doing, which was lovely.

But what I felt also was you lacked a slight bit of confidence.

-Do you think you're good?

-ALL: Yes.

I want you to show that more when you perform.

I do think we did it to the best we can do.

If we could get through to the next round

we would definitely take those points on board.

Unity 7, I'm afraid you're not going through,

but well done for getting this far.

But their story didn't end there.

One of the groups was no longer able to continue in the competition

and so the judges decided that Unity 7

should take their place in the Studio Heats.

-How have the rehearsals been going?

-Good.

Do you feel prepared for today?

Yeah.

We've got a studio audience arriving, as we speak.

-Does that add to the pressure?

-It makes it more exciting.

After being handed a second chance, can Unity 7 find

the confidence they need to succeed on stage in front of the judges?

They are our last act to perform

and they are hoping to add some valuable points to their score.

Singing and dancing for a place in the live finals,

-Well done, guy. Nice work.

-Sisco, did you like that performance?

I thought it was an extremely clever arrangement,

choreographically, what you did.

I think it's very hard to understand choreography in a show like this,

because the vocals are the priority, but you guys had an amazing blend.

It was so clear to see what the story was. The staging was great.

The only critique is I felt, when we started getting to the chorus,

we lost the fullness of the vocals.

-You know, there's nine of you, eight of you up there...

-Seven.

-Seven, I can't count.

-Unity 7.

Oh, gosh. I fell into that one.

In all seriousness, it's like, when it got to the chorus

there's, like, three of you. Do you know what I mean?

Is it because you were dancing or the nerves?

But you guys have to make sure you

keep the consistency of your vocals, because the dancing was on point.

Thanks, Cisco.

Carrie, your thoughts?

I thought it was a brilliant performance to begin with,

beautifully blended, lovely vocals.

The more ambitious the vocals got, the thinner it sounded.

And that's something you need to look at

when you're walking around the stage. Kind of stomping.

And there's only one person and one harmony, you start losing

some of those harmonies and they sound a bit wobbly.

So, it was a bit wobbly by the end, but the first half was lovely.

David, was that the right song choice for Unity 7?

I think it was a great song choice, because it gave them

the opportunity to show their acting and the whole performance.

One of the things about a glee club performing is it's not

just standing there. You actually made it like a little tableau.

You told a story with the song.

David, isn't it? "David's not going to sing."

Then you started singing and it was well worth the wait.

I think what they're saying is right -

make sure in the story you keep that uniformity of blend and sound

and quality and the fatness of the sound.

Because when you're singing at your best, it's a great sound.

-And finally, John?

-You guys have a wonderful, wonderful sound.

It's the blend and you're very anthemic.

I could hear your song on the theme of a movie. It's quite fantastic.

Your opening solo, young lady, fantastic. Very, very good.

And there are seven of you.

Gosh, they said some lovely things to you lot, didn't they?

They were saying you chose a good song, lovely arrangement,

dancing was on point, said Sisco.

But they all said the same thing about it -

kind of, thinning out in the middle, maybe having a few wobbly moments.

-Do you think that was right?

-Yeah, we've been given that before.

-Have you?

-Yeah. I think that's what we need to work on,

trying to blend the choreography with the singing,

but I think, overall, I was really happy with it.

Let's see if you've done enough. Not long until we find out.

I think it's been really interesting today,

because I think each of these groups has had moments of brilliance

and moments where they've struggled

so it's been interesting for us to judge.
