-were best friends.

-They loved their jobs and knew

-that being a month in a year...

-..was a very important job.

-It was one they all took seriously.

-What if one of the months

-decided one morning...

-..that it didn't want to be

-a month any more?

-What would we do then?

-This story is about a time when

-something very similar happened.

-January decided he'd had enough.

-Everyone who knows January knows

-he can be a rather cold character.

-Frosty, even.

-But this was a serious matter,

-even for him.

-March, the beginning of spring...

-..was always excited

-about everything.

-She was a happy character

-and good friend with all the months.

-She didn't like seeing

-any of the other months unhappy.

-So, she asked January why he didn't

-want to be January any more.

-"I'll tell you now what's wrong,"

-replied January.

-"No-one likes me because

-I'm the first month of the year."

-"Come on," said April.

-"That's not true.

-"Don't say that

-or you'll make me cry."

-"Here he goes again," said February.

-April started crying uncontrollably.

-Literally.

-The months of the year were used

-to April's tearful showers.

-"It's totally true," said January.

-"The children don't like me.

-"It's the month they return

-to school after Christmas."

-December nodded his head

-with a beaming smile on his face.

-August had listened to everything

-January has said.

-She wanted to lift his spirits.

-After all, August was

-a glowing, sunny little character.

-"Let's have a little smile,

-January.

-"We are the months of the year and

-we all have important work to do.

-"Everyone loves us."

-"That's easy for you to say,"

-protested January.

-"You're August

-and everyone loves you.

-"All the children can play outside

-all day during the summer."

-"Well, yes, that is true,"

-replied August.

-"Well, I don't want to be

-The other months started to panic.

-summer, autumn and winter happen?

-"Will they happen at all?"

-"What?" asked June

-who was starting to fret himself.

-"What do you mean?"

-The summer months -

-June, July and August...

-..think they're the fun months.

-More time to play outdoors

-and it's hotter.

-"If January isn't January

-any more," said October...

-.."I'm not sure

-if a new year will ever happen.

-"It won't stop snowing.

-"The date would stick

-on December 31.

-"Forever.

-"The children would never return

-to school.

-"They would never learn.

-"The flowers wouldn't wake up

-after the winter.

-"Nor the animals.

-"It'd be a tragedy."

-"Oh, dear," replied May,

-"This isn't good at all."

-July was in a terrible panic.

-"The last school day is in my month.

-"I'm the beginning

-of the summer holidays.

-"I can't stop being July.

-"That would make me June.

-"With all due respect, June."

-"No problems," replied June.

-"We all have different jobs to do.

-"Every month

-is as important as the next."

-"Now then, that's enough," said May.

-May was very sensible.

-She wasn't too cold or too hot.

-"None of you will have to change...

-"..if we can persuade January to be

-perfect for the start of the year."

-"Good luck with that,"

-replied January.

-He'd been listening to every word

-with his arms folded.

-The others gathered together

-in one corner.

-November was the first to speak.

-"Now then, we must think of things

-people like about January."

-August had an idea

-and shared it with the others.

-Then, everyone went to January

-to persuade him to stay.

-"Well," sighed January.

-"Come on then.

-"What on earth could you tell me

-to stop me from going?"

-"Well, January," said February,

-"We held a meeting.

-"Do you?" said January surprisingly.

-He hadn't expected that.

-"Oh, yes, we do," said February.

-"Many people turn over a new leaf

-"They make resolutions

-to be better people.

-"August is a month

-when most have a summer holiday...

-"..but you're the month

-when things star afresh."

-January sighed sadly.

-"Remember, being first in anything

-is quite an achievement.

-"You make things easier for me.

-"Where would I be without you?"

-"Yes, well, you might have

-a point there," said January.

-"It's not that bad."

-"And January," smiled July,

-"You've forgotten something else."

-"Really?"

-replied January confusingly.

-"Oh, yes. There is a time

-when you have all the fun."

-As one, all the others said...

-.."When it snows!"

-January's smile

-became wider and wider.

-"To be honest, being January is the

-best thing in the whole wide world.

-"I start the whole year.

-"When it snows,

-everyone can stay home...

-"..to make snowmen and snowballs.

-"They slide down the hills

-on their sledges."

-"Don't forget," said August...

-.."Even though it's winter here,

-it's a hot summer in other places...

-"..such as Australia."

-"I've been so silly," said January.

-"I'd forgotten all about that.

-Isn't that great?"

-Everyone was glad that January

-wanted to stay as January.

-What great news.
