ACCORDION MUSIC PLAYS Bienvenue, Technobabble.

0:00:020:00:04

Je suis le Vlogster.

0:00:040:00:05

Oh, excuse me, viewers. I'm just recording our French show.

0:00:050:00:08

I'm very multi-lingual, don't you know? Bear with me.

0:00:080:00:11

HE SPEAKS IN FRENCH

0:00:110:00:13

So, here's what's coming up on today's international show.

0:00:280:00:32

My American buddy, Rita, reports from...

0:00:320:00:34

ELVIS PRESLEY IMPRESSION: Las Vegas, baby. The world's biggest tech show.

0:00:340:00:37

-A-huh-huh.

-This is my new best friend, Buddy. I'm keeping him.

0:00:370:00:41

Our Australian mate, Elly.

0:00:420:00:44

She's back and she's hanging out with celebs.

0:00:440:00:46

This app is just ridiculous.

0:00:460:00:49

Plus, me Irish mucker, Aoife's

0:00:490:00:50

here to combine games with browsing, to be sure.

0:00:500:00:54

A free in-browser game can be a great way to pass the time.

0:00:540:00:57

But first, let's start with a face from a bit closer to home.

0:00:570:01:01

Here's new boy Will with a lowdown on creating games.

0:01:010:01:05

Everyone loves playing games. One of the best things about them

0:01:050:01:08

is that you can also make games yourself.

0:01:080:01:10

First you want to think of an idea for the game.

0:01:100:01:12

My advice - keep it simple. Some of the greatest games are.

0:01:120:01:15

I made a game, Dodgerblock, which in essence is just dropping blocks

0:01:150:01:18

It doesn't get simpler than that.

0:01:180:01:20

Write your ideas down, write drawings - whatever works for you.

0:01:200:01:22

Once you've got the idea, the next step is to start making your game.

0:01:220:01:25

For this you need some gaming software.

0:01:250:01:27

I use Gamemaker but there's loads of other ones out there.

0:01:270:01:30

If you get stuck, there are loads of tutorials out there

0:01:300:01:32

but the best way to learn is to just try new things out.

0:01:320:01:34

After you've chosen your software you need to start making

0:01:340:01:37

a prototype for your game.

0:01:370:01:38

This doesn't need fancy graphics, but it'll show you what the game is like

0:01:380:01:41

when playing it which will give you new ideas on what to do next.

0:01:410:01:44

After you've played around with your game idea, expand your prototype.

0:01:440:01:47

This is where you add more levels,

0:01:470:01:48

if it's a side-scroller type of game like Angry Birds or supermeboy.

0:01:480:01:51

Or, if it only has one level, then you make it get harder

0:01:510:01:54

so it's always more interesting, you could increase the speed,

0:01:540:01:57

make objects harder to collect and so on.

0:01:570:01:59

The choice is yours. After you've done that

0:01:590:02:00

and the game feels more playable,

0:02:000:02:02

it's now time to make the graphics look great.

0:02:020:02:04

Add some music and sound effects.

0:02:040:02:06

Then all that's left to do is to share with your friends

0:02:060:02:08

and family and you can get them playing as well.

0:02:080:02:11

Thank you, Willie.

0:02:110:02:12

Oh, no. It's messaging time. Come on, then. Give me the bad news.

0:02:120:02:16

What name have we gone with today?

0:02:160:02:19

Snapagram. Urgh.

0:02:190:02:21

Oh, I suppose we've had worse. Right.

0:02:210:02:23

Let's have a question.

0:02:230:02:25

Vlogster, what technology should I look out for in 2016?

0:02:250:02:28

Oh, Sam! Great question and I know just who to call...

0:02:300:02:33

Now, where did I write down that phone number...?

0:02:330:02:36

I know, I know.

0:02:470:02:48

I did warn him about that time machine.

0:02:480:02:50

I cannot believe it.

0:02:500:02:51

I suppose you can only give so much advice, Rita.

0:02:510:02:54

You know you're right, Vlogster. You just have to live and learn I guess.

0:02:540:02:57

Talking about learning, I'm getting a tad rusty.

0:02:570:03:00

I need a system update on all things tech-tastic.

0:03:000:03:03

You know, it's funny you should say that, Vlogster.

0:03:030:03:05

You'll never guess where I am...

0:03:050:03:07

Well, I never.

0:03:070:03:10

Vegas, baby.

0:03:100:03:13

MUSIC: Viva Las Vegas by Elvis Presley

0:03:130:03:18

This place is a tech lover's dream come true,

0:03:320:03:34

and we have a VIP pass to check it out.

0:03:340:03:39

The Consumer Electronics Show, held in Vegas, every January, is

0:03:390:03:43

the world's largest showcase of new technology.

0:03:430:03:46

Over 170,000 people visit each year to see exhibitors from more

0:03:460:03:50

than 150 countries.

0:03:500:03:51

They're so cute.

0:03:530:03:54

Come here, boy!

0:03:560:03:57

ROBOT: Hi, Rita! Come over here.

0:04:000:04:05

It's a pleasure to meet you.

0:04:050:04:06

It's a pleasure to meet you too, Mechanoid.

0:04:060:04:09

Chris, this guy is amazing. Tell me all about it.

0:04:090:04:12

What we wanted to do was take this amazing building system

0:04:120:04:16

and then add electronic teachings to it.

0:04:160:04:18

So they can learn about electrical engineering, they can learn

0:04:180:04:21

about programming and really begin to experiment on a bigger scale.

0:04:210:04:23

So, tell me, how does this robot work?

0:04:230:04:26

It's a really neat system. So we've got our basic nuts

0:04:260:04:29

and bolts system, holding it together.

0:04:290:04:30

And then we have our smart modules here which actually

0:04:300:04:33

not only act as motors but they also act as sensors.

0:04:330:04:37

So when I press this red button...

0:04:370:04:39

the robot's actually going to record everything that I do to him.

0:04:390:04:44

Hi, I'm Mechanoid!

0:04:440:04:46

And then that's recorded into memory.

0:04:470:04:49

ROBOT: "Hi, I'm Mechanoid!"

0:04:490:04:51

And how can I program the robot to do what I want it to do?

0:04:510:04:55

All you have to do is grab the little control bubbles here

0:04:550:04:57

and it'll actually record everything that you do.

0:04:570:05:00

Do you want to try it?

0:05:000:05:01

Sure.

0:05:010:05:03

All right...

0:05:050:05:07

-You're a natural.

-I'm a natural! Thank you so much for showing me.

0:05:100:05:13

-This guy is amazing. Thanks.

-Thanks so much for coming by.

-Thank you.

0:05:130:05:17

Vlogster, I think I've found you the perfect pet.

0:05:270:05:31

From hi-tec sports to supersize TVs, the latest cars,

0:05:310:05:35

to cooking gadgets, CES has been running for almost 50 years.

0:05:350:05:38

This right here is a smart fitness watch.

0:05:380:05:41

It helps me stay in shape and keep track of all of my exercises.

0:05:410:05:45

You're never going to guess who I ran into today...

0:05:520:05:54

It's Ricky from Newsround!

0:05:540:05:56

I'm here. I'm having the time of my life.

0:05:560:05:58

-It is so cool here.

-It is.

0:05:580:06:00

What has been your favourite thing?

0:06:000:06:02

Well, my mind has been blown several times but robots

0:06:020:06:05

and drones happen to be the best thing so far.

0:06:050:06:08

I had a robot that carried my bags.

0:06:080:06:10

I saw an alarm clock which wakes you up with a smell.

0:06:100:06:13

How cool would that be?

0:06:130:06:14

I've seen a really cool robot that you can dance with.

0:06:140:06:17

It's been fantastic. I've had the time of my life.

0:06:170:06:19

But, do you know what? I'm quite tired now.

0:06:190:06:21

If that's the case, we will let you go.

0:06:210:06:22

We still have a lot more to explore.

0:06:220:06:24

Hello. This is my new best friend, Buddy. I'm keeping him.

0:06:280:06:32

The show covers the same space as 400 basketball courts.

0:06:330:06:38

It's spread over 15 miles of floor

0:06:380:06:40

and helps to launch some 20,000 new products.

0:06:400:06:43

This is extreme reality.

0:06:430:06:45

It uses the camera, like, on your phone or laptop

0:06:450:06:47

so that you can play awesome games with your body.

0:06:470:06:50

This has got to be the most exciting thing I've seen all day.

0:06:570:07:00

We all know virtual reality is super cool

0:07:000:07:02

but this mixes VR with a flight simulator.

0:07:020:07:05

That means that it feels like you're flying through space

0:07:050:07:08

and fighting bad guys in real-time. It is crazy cool.

0:07:080:07:11

Thanks, Rita. Oh, you've done me proud.

0:07:110:07:14

Ah, Vegas. The place where tech dreams do come true.

0:07:150:07:19

Right, what's next? Some continent hopping, I reckon.

0:07:190:07:22

Elly, let's be having you and your celebrity apps, my Aussie cobber.

0:07:220:07:26

Hey, cool people!

0:07:270:07:28

Today I've got some fun celebrity apps for you to try.

0:07:280:07:32

Let's start off with Celebrity Face Mania.

0:07:320:07:34

In this app you have to piece together celebrities' faces.

0:07:340:07:37

And I'm not sure if it's meant to be,

0:07:370:07:39

but this app is actually really funny because you have to flick

0:07:390:07:42

through different celebrities' eyes, noses and mouths

0:07:420:07:45

to make up the original celebrities' face.

0:07:450:07:47

I don't think this game is very difficult.

0:07:470:07:49

It's mostly just very amusing. But that's why I think it's very fun.

0:07:490:07:53

To start off with you can unlock around 20 celebrities

0:07:530:07:55

and it's available for free for Android devices.

0:07:550:07:58

If you don't have an Android device though,

0:07:580:08:00

I would highly recommend Celebrity Face Maker.

0:08:000:08:03

This app is just ridiculous - in a good way that is. Watch this.

0:08:030:08:07

You're able to put a celebrity's face onto your face.

0:08:070:08:11

And you can do this with pictures in your library,

0:08:110:08:14

or take a photo of yourself.

0:08:140:08:15

And it's so weird but it's so funny.

0:08:150:08:18

You can even next to different celebrities faces together

0:08:180:08:20

and the app comes with 25 free faces which is plenty.

0:08:200:08:24

But you can purchase more, if you'd like.

0:08:240:08:26

Next, I'm recommending Find Justin Bieber.

0:08:260:08:29

What you have to do is find Justin Bieber in a crowd

0:08:290:08:32

of Justin Biebers and the app will basically show you

0:08:320:08:35

a picture of Justin and you have to find his matching image.

0:08:350:08:38

The first time I was playing this game I didn't find it very

0:08:380:08:41

challenging, but now I'm a Belieber that

0:08:410:08:43

if you play more difficult levels is largely quite hard

0:08:430:08:46

because the pictures will randomly change places.

0:08:460:08:48

-So have fun with those and keep smiling.

-Thanks, Elly.

0:08:480:08:52

I knew a celebrity once. True story.

0:08:520:08:55

And, as usual, my showbiz babblers,

0:08:550:08:57

don't download apps without permission.

0:08:570:09:00

If my BFF, Beyonce, has to ask first,

0:09:000:09:03

then I expect you lot do the same.

0:09:030:09:06

OK, Snapagram.

0:09:060:09:07

I'm ready for another question.

0:09:070:09:10

Vlogster, how will we holiday in the future?

0:09:100:09:13

A well travelled question there, Emily.

0:09:140:09:16

You babblers... Always skiving and thinking about holidays.

0:09:160:09:20

Go on, then, let's have a look.

0:09:200:09:22

Tech-perts think that your future getaway might begin at home -

0:09:240:09:28

Slipping on a virtual reality headset

0:09:280:09:30

and feeling vibrations through a haptic smartphone.

0:09:300:09:34

You'll be able to experience the sights, sounds, smells,

0:09:340:09:37

and feel of your dream destination.

0:09:370:09:39

Say, walking through a bustling Moroccan market,

0:09:390:09:43

sniffing wafts of exotic spices and touching the silk scarves on sale.

0:09:430:09:48

Oh!

0:09:480:09:49

These virtual tasters might become

0:09:490:09:51

so real that you don't need to leave home at all,

0:09:510:09:54

exploring somewhere new in the world every day.

0:09:540:09:57

And no forgotten underpants.

0:09:570:09:59

Ever wondered where Nemo got to?

0:09:590:10:02

Well, you might find him,

0:10:020:10:04

while you eat at the underwater Ithaa restaurant in the Maldives.

0:10:040:10:08

With all glass windows from floor-to-ceiling,

0:10:080:10:10

your fellow diners could be sharks, stingrays and turtles.

0:10:100:10:15

And in Dubai you could even sleep with the fishes, if you

0:10:150:10:18

check into the planned Water Discus Hotel, ten metres under the sea,

0:10:180:10:21

in a glass lift. But no need to hold your breath,

0:10:210:10:25

all rooms will have below ocean views including passing mermaids.

0:10:250:10:30

Hmm. The mermaids sound a bit fishy to me,

0:10:300:10:33

but I bet they'll be chish and fips for tea.

0:10:330:10:36

Fancy somewhere further afield?

0:10:360:10:37

In the next few years,

0:10:370:10:38

passenger space ships will start taking tourists into space.

0:10:380:10:42

Although at £165,000, the ticket prices are out of this world too.

0:10:420:10:47

For a third of the cost, and if you're not afraid of heights,

0:10:470:10:50

you can go to 19 miles above Earth in a special balloon, where,

0:10:500:10:55

for a couple of hours, you can admire the curvature of the Earth.

0:10:550:10:59

If that sounds a bit rushed,

0:10:590:11:00

how about a more down to earth hotel stay?

0:11:000:11:02

On the moon.

0:11:020:11:04

British architects and NASA scientists are making plans

0:11:040:11:07

to build a habitable moon base,

0:11:070:11:09

using 3-D printers and lunar soil.

0:11:090:11:12

Soil!? I thought the moon was made of cheese. Happy holidays.

0:11:120:11:16

With all this talk of exotic places,

0:11:170:11:19

I'm beginning to think it's time to think I took a break myself.

0:11:190:11:22

Skeggy, Brid, Cleethorpes... Hmm. Difficult decision.

0:11:220:11:25

While I mull over my next glamorous getaway,

0:11:250:11:29

here's Aoife with some browser games.

0:11:290:11:31

If you find yourself about a game that you want to play

0:11:320:11:35

and ten minutes to spare,

0:11:350:11:36

a free in-browser game can be a great way to pass the time.

0:11:360:11:40

Ultimate Dodge Ball is pretty basic but it's a good way to

0:11:400:11:43

while away a few minutes of downtime.

0:11:430:11:45

The basics are your opponent will try and match your movements

0:11:450:11:48

and hit you with the ball, just as you move and aim for them.

0:11:480:11:52

It's also made a lot harder by the fact that there's a guy

0:11:520:11:54

hiding in the corner throwing a few extra things at you to dodge.

0:11:540:11:58

Hey, no fair.

0:11:580:12:00

Agario is an in-browser game that you'll likely keep coming back to.

0:12:000:12:04

It's such a simple idea and the average game lasts

0:12:040:12:07

about 30 seconds to a minute.

0:12:070:12:10

You start off as a little coloured dot and as you move around using the

0:12:100:12:13

mouse, you'll eat up any coloured dot smaller than you.

0:12:130:12:17

The problem is, there

0:12:170:12:18

are a lot of other, bigger, players out there trying to hunt you down.

0:12:180:12:22

If you want to chill out after a long day, how about a nice,

0:12:220:12:26

relaxing game of virtual ping-pong?

0:12:260:12:29

Cube Slam Is quite like Pong, one of the earliest video games ever made.

0:12:290:12:34

Except it comes with some upbeat chiptune music

0:12:340:12:37

and a variety of cool player ops.

0:12:370:12:38

Playing against one of the computer- controlled bears can be really

0:12:380:12:41

challenging but you can invite a friend to play against you instead.

0:12:410:12:46

But be prepared. It can get really competitive.

0:12:460:12:49

QWOP, so-called because it uses the keyboard buttons Q, W, O

0:12:490:12:53

and P, is a game where you control four parts of an

0:12:530:12:56

athlete's legs, thighs, and calves

0:12:560:12:58

and sent him sprinting down a racetrack.

0:12:580:13:01

The problem is it's quite hard not to get turned upside down

0:13:010:13:04

within the first metre.

0:13:040:13:06

It's a very silly game. But one that's very, very fun.

0:13:060:13:10

Thanks, lovely Aofia.

0:13:100:13:12

So, just before we go, we have time for what

0:13:120:13:14

I like to refer to as the highlight of the show.

0:13:140:13:17

It's the Babblebuster.

0:13:170:13:20

T is for twoosh

0:13:200:13:22

A twoosh or twitter swoosh is a tweet that is exactly

0:13:220:13:27

140 characters long -

0:13:270:13:28

the maximum amount of letters, numbers and symbols allowed.

0:13:280:13:31

No more, no less.

0:13:310:13:34

President of the USA Barrack Obama once claimed that he was

0:13:340:13:37

the twoosh master, after a online question and answer session.

0:13:370:13:41

Right, I'm off.

0:13:410:13:43

I'm going to make me some Paella.

0:13:430:13:45

Adios, amigos. Hasta pronto.

0:13:450:13:48
