SHE SCREAMS | 0:00:46 | 0:00:47
TRAIN WHISTLE | 0:00:47 | 0:00:48
Oh! | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52 | |
SHE GASPS | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
Wow! | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55 | |
Oh, wow! | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
Welcome to The Dengineers. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
Today, we're in Orpington to surprise a boy named Ben. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
Ben is massively into survival, so we're going to build him | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
an amazing survival theme den in his back garden. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
Oh, this is right up my street. We're talking camp fires, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
nature watching, adventures. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
Oh, oh! Maybe we'll see a lion or a tiger! | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
Oh-oh! | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
Likes to get carried away, that one! | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
Let's meet today's Dengineer. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
I'm Ben. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
I'm 11 and I really need help from the Dengineers. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
Ben lives with his mum Jen, nine-year-old brother Archie, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
seven-year-old sister Millie and dad Neil. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
My dad's a vicar and because of this we've had to move round loads. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
I've lived in seven different houses | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
and had to go to four different primary schools. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
This move has been the hardest one, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
cos I've had to leave loads of friends behind. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
I'd love a survival theme den that I could hang out in | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
and watch all the nature in my garden. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
It would be brilliant if the Dengineers could come and help me. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
Well, Ben's in luck because the Dengineers are going to come | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
and help him and he doesn't even know it yet. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
So right now, we're actually outside Ben's house | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
and he's got no idea that me and Lauren are here. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
Nor has he got any idea that the whole Dengineers team's here | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
and he hasn't got any idea that he's about to have his dream den made. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:30
It's so exciting, but he's going to walk right past us. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
I hope we don't get caught. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
(Come on, let's go!) | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
'Ben's parents are in on the act. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
'And his dad is going to take Ben out to the shops, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
'so that we can get in the house and get ready for the big surprise. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
'He has no idea that we're hiding just round the corner.' | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
He's literally right there. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:51
They're going, the door's shut. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
They're going now, they're leaving now. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
-Keep down. Keep down. -They're in the car. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
-This way, they've gone. -They've gone. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
-They've gone. -Shall we go and make this happen? | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
-Yeah, let's go. -Come on. The coast is clear. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
Let's go over here. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
'With Ben only out for one hour, it's a race against time | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
'for the Dengineers to get ready for this survival style surprise! | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
'The team need to rig all their secret cameras in the house | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
'and guard them...' | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
Yeah, there you go, you got the look. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
'..get the crew camoed up and hidden in the bushes. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:30
'And me and Lauren need to pitch a survival tent | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
'in the back garden to hide in. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:34
'All this is done and finished just seconds before Ben gets home.' | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
OK, what did you get? | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
'Right, Mum, it's over to you to get Ben out into the garden.' | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
-He's coming out the door. -Is he? -Yeah! | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
If you just go round there and have a look cos it's around the fence. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:56
-Hello. -Hello. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:00
-It's Ben, right? -Yep. -Hello. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
Hello. My name's Lauren. This is Mark. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
-We're from CBBC's The Dengineers. -Really?! | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
-How are you doing? -Good. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
We are here to tell you that you, Ben, are going to get to | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
-build your very own dream den! -Yes! | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
THEY CHEER AND LAUGH | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
-How does it make you feel? -Really excited. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
We've been literally hiding hidden cameras in trees. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
The camera crew and the Dengineers have been hiding everywhere. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
-Amazing. -We can't spend too long talking about it | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
because we've got a den to build and if you want it to be amazing, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
it won't be easy so shall we get this show on the road? | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
-Come on, let's do it! -Yeah. -Yeah? -Let's go. -Come on. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
We'll get you a bandanna! | 0:04:35 | 0:04:36
I felt so excited when they came out of the tent. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
Hello! | 0:04:40 | 0:04:41
I am so excited about getting my dream den made! | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
Amazing! | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
It's just a once in a lifetime chance. It'll just be amazing. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
Our first port of call is the Dengineers' mobile HQ, | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
which has some mega cool technology to get this den on track. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:01
Are you ready? | 0:05:01 | 0:05:02
This is our chance to find out a bit more about what Ben | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
wants his survival theme den to be like. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
So here we are, Ben. Welcome to the Dengineers' mobile HQ. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
In here, we're going to download everything that you've got | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
in your mind onto this and work out exactly what you need for your den. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:19
-Shall we have a little look? -Yep. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
I like this one cos it's all the survival gear. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
Maybe something in the side of a hill here, or, like, underground. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
-Underground, oh! -Something like that. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
So we're talking, like, kind of greens and stuff... | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
-Yeah. Yeah, like... -..because we don't want... | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
-..no people to see, like, what it is! -Yeah. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:37
Or maybe, like, it's coming up from the ground | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
where we could watch animals. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
This is actually genuinely proper cool. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
Ben's mood board is all about his den being a camouflaged | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
hideout where he can watch the nature in his garden. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
It's a survivalist's dream and we've got just the designer for the job. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:57
Sege has been in the building biz for 36 years, | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
and he's a legend in the den building world. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
Sege knows what Ben wants his survival den to be like and | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
if anyone can make his den dreams come true it's this guy. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:15
What we're going to do, in true survival fashion, | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
we're going to dig down and build you a survival pit. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
And what we're going to do is we're going to make it even more | 0:06:23 | 0:06:26
camouflaged cos we're going to give it a grass roof, | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
-a turfed roof, OK? -Ah. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:31
What we'll also do is we'll give you observation. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:33
-Rather than windows, we'll give you observation holes. -Yeah. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
-So you can see what's going on at any one time, how's that sound? -Wow! | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
It's amazing! | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
This is going to be the ultimate survival den. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
It will be tall with hatched windows | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
and the roof will be covered in turf. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
The Dengineers will dig down to create the underground bunker and | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
the earth from the hole will be used to form a slope going up to the den. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:57
The inside will be a proper survival haven that Ben can | 0:06:57 | 0:07:01
use for nature watching and planning his adventures. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:05
Ben's mum and dad don't own this house, so we've had to get | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
special permission from the church to build the den. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:12
The first thing we have to do is put up a massive screen, | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
so that none of Ben's family can see what's happening. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
The fact that we can't see what's going on is exciting | 0:07:18 | 0:07:22
but it definitely makes me feel nervous. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
Do I trust Ben? Um... | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
HE LAUGHS | 0:07:27 | 0:07:28
He's got tonnes of idea and which one he goes with will be | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
fascinating to see how it works out. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
Now it's time to start the build, and Sege has brought | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
in some special help. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:40
These guys are ground workers and, using their digger, are going to | 0:07:42 | 0:07:46
dig the foundations that will then support the structure | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
and dig the hole that will become Ben's underground bunker. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
Even though Ben is only 11 years old, as a special Dengineers treat, | 0:07:55 | 0:08:00
he's going to get to have a go at operating the digger... | 0:08:00 | 0:08:02
under Frank's close supervision of course! | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
I was quite nervous cos I thought I could press the wrong thing | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
and it'll just go straight into the pit. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:12
There you go! | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
You're a natural! | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
I can't believe I just drove that digger, it was amazing and working | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
with all that machinery and... | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
I might want to do that when I'm older! | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
-What did you think of that, then? -That was amazing! | 0:08:24 | 0:08:27
While the rest of the foundations are going down, I thought | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
it would be a good opportunity to have a brew and a chat with | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
Ben's mum and dad about why this den is so important to Ben. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
So, Mum and Dad, thank you very much for the brew, I thought we'd come in | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
and have a little chat in here, | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
because you've got quite an interesting job. Tell us about that. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
Well, I'm a vicar, so I'll lead a church | 0:08:47 | 0:08:50
and so that's why we've moved here as part of the new church. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
And how many times have you moved then, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
cos obviously you have to follow the job? | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
-It's about seven houses that he's lived in. -Seven houses! | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
That Ben's lived in. We've lived in a few more! | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
What kind of effect does that have for Ben? | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
It's not ideal, cos you make friends | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
and then you have to start again somewhere else, | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
so he's made the best of it, but it's a bit of a challenge sometimes. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:15
Obviously, we're making for him an amazing, amazing den. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
How much do you think he deserves that? | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
You feel bad, as parents, you know, uprooting them from good friendships | 0:09:21 | 0:09:25
and, you know, it's not their job and they've got to follow us around. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
And so it feels so nice to be able to give him | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
something really good that is just his! | 0:09:31 | 0:09:35
This den is clearly going to mean a lot to Ben, | 0:09:36 | 0:09:38
so it's really important that we make it as good as possible. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:43
Things are going well so far | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
and the Dengineers have started putting up the main structure | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
of the den and it seems that Ben is mesmerised by the walls. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:53
I just thought it would just be plain-like walls, | 0:09:53 | 0:09:55
but this looks amazing! | 0:09:55 | 0:09:57
Wow! | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01 | |
To be honest it's, like, all fitted together exactly. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07
These walls are made out of slab wood, which is | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
what's cut off the round tree trunk, leaving just the bark. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
And it's often the part of the tree that goes to waste. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:18
Wow! | 0:10:18 | 0:10:19 | |
OK, Ben, I can now tell you what this bit is for, shall I? | 0:10:23 | 0:10:27
-Yeah. -This is a lot of roof as you can clearly see! -Yeah. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
And you've been wondering what's going to happen here, haven't you? | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
-And you really want to know what that hole is, surely? -Yeah. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:35
Well, that hole is a secret escape for you, | 0:10:35 | 0:10:37
-only you can come out of that hole. -Wow! | 0:10:37 | 0:10:39
But here's the thing... Because this is where the soil comes in. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:42
-That's what I was thinking. -You're thinking now. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
-Yep. -So we're going to get all the soil back here... -Yeah. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:47
..and going to have it all going up this low roof and then we're going | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
-to turf it, so it looks like it's embedded into the ground. -Yeah! | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
-How cool's that? -Amazing! | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
But moving all that soil is a job for tomorrow as it's time | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
for the Dengineers to pack up on a busy first day of the build. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
As they seal the den so that it's weatherproof overnight, | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
Ben takes some time to take in his new domain. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
My den's looking really good! | 0:11:10 | 0:11:12
I really like the wood and how it feels | 0:11:12 | 0:11:15
and I won't be able to sleep tonight cos I'll be, like, so excited | 0:11:15 | 0:11:19
and waiting to see what's going to happen tomorrow! | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
Need to find the right direction home, but no compass to hand?! | 0:11:33 | 0:11:37
That classic problem! | 0:11:37 | 0:11:39
Well, now you can fix it with one simple solution. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:42
It's the paperclip-compass hack. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:44
It's easy. All you need is a leaf, paperclip and a puddle. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:50
Take the paperclip, straighten it out, and bend a piece off. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
Ask an adult for help if you're struggling. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
Rub the end of the paperclip against your clothing several times. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
Place the leaf in the puddle, put the paperclip on top, and the end | 0:12:02 | 0:12:06
you've rubbed will eventually point north. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:10
Let's see if this works. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
Wow, that's incredible! | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
Now, which way back to the den? | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
There's still loads to do to the exterior of the den | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
and it's going to take a lot of work. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:31
I am absolutely 100% relying on the whole Dengineers team to make | 0:12:31 | 0:12:35
sure they get some real hard graft in. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
That's what I'm depending on today. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:42
The Dengineers need to move two tonnes of earth that was dug | 0:12:42 | 0:12:45
up from the hole and put it in place, sloping up to the den. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:50
That's the weight of nearly 25 grown-ups and it's such | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
a massive job that even Sege is getting his hands dirty. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:58
To be quite honest, I felt guilty just watching | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
so it's not like me getting my hands dirty. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
I'm not used to it! | 0:13:04 | 0:13:05
I'm not used to it at all. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:08
With all the soil in position, | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
it needs compressing down so that it doesn't move. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
And there's only one thing for it. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16
Come on, then, everybody up, let's do it! | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
Wow! | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22 | |
That's it, jump it down, pat it down. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:26
Hard as you can, that's it! | 0:13:26 | 0:13:28
And stop, stop, stop, stop. Why are we the only ones doing it? | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
Why aren't any of those doing it, Ben? | 0:13:31 | 0:13:34
Yeah! | 0:13:34 | 0:13:35 | |
Even the crew are being forced to help | 0:13:35 | 0:13:37
and they rarely like to break a sweat. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
Go on, that's it, everybody in! | 0:13:40 | 0:13:42
Fantastic! | 0:13:42 | 0:13:43
OK, job well done, chaps. Thank you. Thanks. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
With the soil in place, Ben won't see the den now | 0:13:51 | 0:13:53
until the big den reveal in a couple of days' time. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:57
While the rest of the team crack on with the den, I've got | 0:14:00 | 0:14:03
a really, really nice treat for Ben. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
I've got my friend and his ultimate hero here to give him | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
some top survival tips. It's only Mr Steve Backshall. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12
-Hello, mate. -Stevie, how are you? | 0:14:12 | 0:14:13
-Really good. Good to see you again. -Good to see you. Nice to see you. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:17
Steve is the ultimate nature lover and adventurer | 0:14:17 | 0:14:19
and he's Ben's number one hero. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:21
'Whilst Steve hides in the long grass, | 0:14:23 | 0:14:25
'Ben's got no idea that he's about to meet his idol.' | 0:14:25 | 0:14:28
-So you're probably wondering why we're here? -Yeah. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
OK, well, we want you to have the best survival den ever, | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
so I've got someone who's a friend of mine | 0:14:34 | 0:14:37
to give you some tips and there's probably no-one better. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:41
He's somewhere around here. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:42
Steve, can you come out?! | 0:14:42 | 0:14:44
HE GASPS | 0:14:46 | 0:14:48
-Who's that? -Steve Backshall. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:50
-Steve, meet Ben. -Hello, Ben. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:51
-Ben meet Steve. -Hello. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:52
-Nice to meet you. How are you? -Yeah, good. -Fantastic. | 0:14:52 | 0:14:55
I've been hearing an awful lot about your den, it sounds fantastic. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
Right, Steve, what is the plan? | 0:14:58 | 0:15:00
So what I'd really like to do, Ben, would be to show you | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
the kind of den that I spend most of my life in, | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
and hopefully that shall give you some ideas. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
-Are you ready for this? -Yeah. -Come on, let's go into the woods. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:11
Steve's going to show Ben how he builds a simple den | 0:15:13 | 0:15:15
that he sleeps in while he's away on expeditions. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:19
Right, the beauty of the kind of den that I'm going to show you is you | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
could put it up just about anywhere, so all I need is two good trees. | 0:15:22 | 0:15:26
This one and that one will do perfect | 0:15:26 | 0:15:28
-and I'm going to put a hammock up between the two of them. -Yeah. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:30
And then a tarpaulin to cover it up. | 0:15:30 | 0:15:32
So, I want you to do what's called lark's footing it | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
around the tree, so that's going to go around the tree, | 0:15:35 | 0:15:39
and then it's going to feed through that there like that. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:43
And it'll pull tight and this sling will grip onto the tree. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:46
-OK. -Can you do that for me? -Yeah. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:48
Do exactly the same with the three there. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:52
This is right up Ben's street! | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
But Mark's defo not a natural with the knots! | 0:15:55 | 0:15:59
I'm quite proud of meself! | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
Clip that in over there. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:09
And this onto there. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:12
-Right, Ben, do you want to climb in? -Yeah. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:14
I'm always a little bit worried, getting this hammock out | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
when I've been on a long jungle trip cos | 0:16:17 | 0:16:19
I don't know what I'm going to find in it. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:20
There could easily be a tarantula or a scorpion or something | 0:16:20 | 0:16:23
-lurking inside! -Wow! | 0:16:23 | 0:16:24
STEVE LAUGHS | 0:16:24 | 0:16:26
-So we need a shelter over the top to make sure it doesn't get wet. -Yep. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
That's my next job! | 0:16:29 | 0:16:31
Right, if you grab that... | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
Steve covers the hammock with a sheet of waterproof material. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
And after it's been pegged into the ground using sticks | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40
from the woods... | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
Right... | 0:16:42 | 0:16:43
..this becomes the perfect place to sleep overnight. | 0:16:43 | 0:16:47
'But before we head back to our den, | 0:16:47 | 0:16:49
'Steve's got a few more survival tips for Ben.' | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
The important thing to remember is that most animals you're going | 0:16:52 | 0:16:55
-to want to watch have much better senses than we do. -Yeah! | 0:16:55 | 0:16:58
So the birds will have better eyesight | 0:16:58 | 0:17:00
and the mammals will have better senses of smell and hearing. | 0:17:00 | 0:17:03
So when you're inside, if you want to watch things, you've got to be | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
very, very quiet, you've got to make sure that you're not | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
wearing really strong aftershave or perfume or anything like that. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:11
-Yeah. -And even if you're only looking out through | 0:17:11 | 0:17:13
a very small hole, if you've got your camera or your binoculars or | 0:17:13 | 0:17:16
-anything like that, don't move it around... -No. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:18
..because the sun will reflect off the glass | 0:17:18 | 0:17:20
and the birds will see it and they'll fly away. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:22
Ben, I think we're ready to continue to build this dream den. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
What do you reckon, Steve? | 0:17:25 | 0:17:26
I think that there's one last tool that | 0:17:26 | 0:17:28
every naturalist should have. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:31
A good pair of binoculars. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
So that is a little present for you to get started on your den. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:37
-Thank you! -Good luck! | 0:17:37 | 0:17:39
I'd never dream I would meet Steve Backshall | 0:17:40 | 0:17:42
and, like, just building a den with him was amazing. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
My jaws aching, I've been smiling so much! | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
-And that is some autograph, right?! -Yeah! | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
-There you go. -Ah, look at that. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:52
Back on site, the Dengineers are turfing the roofs of Ben's den. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:05
This turfing is essential to make sure the den is camouflaged. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
To blend something into nature, | 0:18:12 | 0:18:14
survivalists have to think about three things. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:16
One, shape - straight lines and angles should be avoided, | 0:18:18 | 0:18:21
which is why Sege has designed this gentle slope. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:25
Two, shine - a few things in nature have a natural shine, | 0:18:25 | 0:18:29
so the windows will have slab wood shutters rather than glass. | 0:18:29 | 0:18:32
And three, colour - we're using the same shades of browns | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
and greens that are found in this part of the garden. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:40
And Sege has designed something else to help Ben stay hidden! | 0:18:42 | 0:18:46
I'm so excited! | 0:18:46 | 0:18:47
We've just finished installing my favourite bit of kit. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
It's a periscope. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:52
This will enable him to study the wildlife without frightening | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
the animals. Absolutely fantastic! | 0:18:55 | 0:18:57
With the periscope installed and the exterior now fully camouflaged, | 0:18:57 | 0:19:01
Ben's den is really starting to come together. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:05
Sit. Paw. Yeah! | 0:19:05 | 0:19:09
As Ben has found himself once again in a new house in an area | 0:19:09 | 0:19:12
where he doesn't know anyone, he's thankful for his best mate Barney. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:17
Aw, you're so cute. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:19
Barney is such an important part of Ben's life | 0:19:19 | 0:19:21
and it is crucial that he's catered for within the den. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:26
So Sege has designed him his very own den kennel, | 0:19:26 | 0:19:29
built to the same spec as Ben's survival den. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:33
It's so cool! | 0:19:33 | 0:19:34
Oh, Sege, I can't believe it, you've built me my very own den | 0:19:34 | 0:19:38
-and just the right size, too! -It is actually, isn't it? | 0:19:38 | 0:19:40
-I should put a little light on there for you as well. -I know, I love it. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:44
-So we know when you're in and when you're out. -Thanks so much! | 0:19:44 | 0:19:46
Actually, this is a fantastic little dog kennel for Ben's dog Barney. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:50
-It's a pretty good dog kennel. -It's a pretty good dog kennel, isn't it? | 0:19:50 | 0:19:53
Love it! | 0:19:53 | 0:19:54
Ben hasn't seen Barney's special kennel and it'll be a great | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
surprise for him when it comes to the big den reveal. | 0:19:57 | 0:20:01
And we've got another surprise in the form of an awesome | 0:20:01 | 0:20:04
upcycle project. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:06
Sege has gotten hold of an old 1960s kitchen cabinet. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:17
The owner was going to chuck it, but Sege has got plans to turn it | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
into a cool survivalist storage space to go in Ben's den. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
Sege wants the cabinet to be camouflaged so the Dengineers are | 0:20:26 | 0:20:29
going to paint the whole thing green like the rest of the den interior. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:33
Then they fix it into position inside the den | 0:20:34 | 0:20:37
and put some cool rope handles on it. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:41
Then it just needs some paint touch ups to properly blend it | 0:20:41 | 0:20:44
into the den. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:45
And there you have it. From an old 1960s kitchen cabinet | 0:20:46 | 0:20:51
to a cool survivalist storage and work station. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:54
While the upcycle project's being installed, | 0:20:56 | 0:20:58
Lauren's been keeping Ben busy in the kitchen. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:01
-Ah, look at these. -Oh, wow! | 0:21:01 | 0:21:04
Urgh, they look so gross. Look at them! | 0:21:04 | 0:21:05
'To get fully into the survival theme, | 0:21:05 | 0:21:07
'I've brought some dried edible insects, | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
'which we're going to try and get some unsuspecting | 0:21:10 | 0:21:12
'taste tasters to eat!' | 0:21:12 | 0:21:14
Which one shall I have, you can choose one for me? | 0:21:14 | 0:21:17
-You rotter, are you kidding? -No! | 0:21:17 | 0:21:18
-Are you actually kidding? -No! | 0:21:18 | 0:21:21
BEN LAUGHS | 0:21:21 | 0:21:22
That was actually an evil laugh as well, | 0:21:22 | 0:21:24
did you hear that? "Mwa-ha-ha." | 0:21:24 | 0:21:26
When survival enthusiasts go on expeditions, | 0:21:26 | 0:21:29
they often have to eat whatever they can find in order to survive. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:33
And although they look disgusting, | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
insects are a great source of protein. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:38
One! Go! | 0:21:38 | 0:21:39
Oh! | 0:21:40 | 0:21:42 | |
I don't like it! | 0:21:42 | 0:21:44
Urgh, it's horrid! | 0:21:45 | 0:21:46
It's dry! | 0:21:46 | 0:21:49
Very dry! Oh, man! | 0:21:49 | 0:21:51
Good effort from Lauren there! | 0:21:51 | 0:21:52
Oh, no! | 0:21:52 | 0:21:54
Now for Ben's family! | 0:21:54 | 0:21:55
-ALL: -Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad! | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
Yeah! | 0:21:58 | 0:22:01 | |
Oh, urgh! | 0:22:01 | 0:22:03
Oh, this is grim. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:05
-ALL: -Mum, Mum, Mum, Mum! | 0:22:05 | 0:22:08
CHEERING | 0:22:08 | 0:22:09
LAUGHTER | 0:22:09 | 0:22:11
Down it goes! | 0:22:11 | 0:22:12
'And there's one more person who needs one of these | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
'not so tasty treats.' | 0:22:16 | 0:22:18
Sege! | 0:22:18 | 0:22:20 | |
Yeah? | 0:22:20 | 0:22:21 | |
-We've got some lovely, delicious bugs for you to eat. -Oh, really?! | 0:22:21 | 0:22:24
-Yep! Are you going to go for it? -Go on, Sege. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:26
-I had that one. -You've had this one? | 0:22:26 | 0:22:29
Yeah, it was really nice. REALLY nice. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:31
-ALL: -Sege, Sege, Sege, Sege, Sege, Sege! | 0:22:31 | 0:22:35
Urgh! | 0:22:37 | 0:22:39 | |
Done it! | 0:22:39 | 0:22:40
Very well done, Sege. He did well there, didn't he? | 0:22:40 | 0:22:42
-A round of applause for Sege! -Thank you very much. Thank you. | 0:22:42 | 0:22:45
'But these guys can't stand around snacking all day.' | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
Are you sure? | 0:22:48 | 0:22:49
'The big den reveal is looming | 0:22:51 | 0:22:53
'and the Dengineers still have a lot to do.' | 0:22:53 | 0:22:56
The team is operating at absolute full speed to get this den | 0:22:58 | 0:23:01
done in time. | 0:23:01 | 0:23:02
Not good. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:06
This is really to the wire, | 0:23:07 | 0:23:09
but a final sweep means Ben's den is good to go! | 0:23:09 | 0:23:12
'Four days ago this was an empty and neglected corner of Ben's garden. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:30
'But the Dengineers have succeeded in creating an amazing survival den | 0:23:30 | 0:23:34
'for Ben and a place for him to call his own | 0:23:34 | 0:23:37
'after all his moving around.' | 0:23:37 | 0:23:39
'The slab wood walls, | 0:23:41 | 0:23:43
'turfed roof | 0:23:43 | 0:23:45
'and hidden windows and doors | 0:23:45 | 0:23:47
'make the den camouflaged and hidden in the garden. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:50
'It looks awesome and Ben can't wait to see it for the first time.' | 0:23:50 | 0:23:56
I'm so excited to see my den, | 0:23:56 | 0:23:57
cos, like, I haven't seen it for the past two days, so I'm just, | 0:23:57 | 0:24:01
like, wondering what they've done to it and I'm just really excited. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:05
Ben, come and have a look at your den! | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
Whoa! | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11 | |
That's amazing! | 0:24:11 | 0:24:12
-What do you think? -It's great! | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
I didn't think it would be this good. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:18
I'm really thankful for what the Dengineers have done for me. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:21
It's just an amazing den in my back garden. | 0:24:21 | 0:24:23
-Whoa! -What's that? | 0:24:23 | 0:24:26
A doghouse for Barney. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:29
-It's amazing. -Barney's den. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:31
-Ben's den. -Yes! -I didn't see that. -You've got one each. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:35
'I think the Dengineers have made it better than I wanted it.' | 0:24:35 | 0:24:37
They've just made it, like, amazing. | 0:24:37 | 0:24:39
They've made every single detail and they won't miss out anything! | 0:24:39 | 0:24:43

cos I could just go in there and I'll have the time of my life. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:37
