Welcome to The Dengineers.

Today, we're in Loughborough to build a completely awesome den

for a totally awesome girl named Ella.

Now, where's that Mark Wright?

How are you doing?

-What are you doing?

-What do you mean, what am I doing?

I'm ready for the bike den we're going to build.

I've got you a helmet, a tandem, the lot.

-Let's get this show on the road.

-No, mate you've got this totally wrong.

Ella hates cycling! In fact, she wants a den

so that she can get away from her family's bikes.

Ah. Better take this back, then.

Whoa, hang on a second. Let's have a go first.

Come on then. Hop on.

-Do you know how to ride these things?

-No.

Just pedal to the metal.

-OK. Off we go.

-Ready?

Don't wobble it!

Today's Dengineer is Ella.

Ella's dad, Nigel,

brother, Alec

and mum, Kath, are all obsessed with cycling,

but Ella is not so keen, so she got in touch and asked us for help.

I need help from The Dengineers,

because everyone in my family loves bikes,

but I hate bikes.

There's no space in this house that isn't crammed with bike stuff.

They're just everywhere.

My friends feel a bit weird when they come over,

cos there's just bikes in my room

and there's nowhere that we can just hang out without bikes being

everywhere and I just don't have my own space.

That's why I need a den.

Please come, Dengineers. I really need your help.

And help from the Dengineers is just what Ella is going to get.

She just doesn't know it yet!

OK, so we're cleverly hidden away in a chippy right across the road

from a bike shop that Ella regularly gets dragged to by her mum and dad.

Yeah, she has absolutely no idea that we're here

or that she is going to be getting her dream den made.

This is going to be the surprise of a lifetime! Ah!

The Dengineers team has rigged the bike shop with hidden cameras

and we are hiding just over the road,

ready to run over and surprise Ella.

-I can see them.

-Ooh, look at Nigel's hat.

-I'm excited but nervous!!!

Mark, act casual.

That's too casual. Turn back.

Ella's mum and dad are in on the act, but Ella doesn't have a clue.

If she sees us now, the whole surprise is ruined.

There they are, there they are! Can you see them?

-They're going in.

-They're right there.

She's not spotted us, so that's good.

She's in. I think we are safe.

Brilliant.

Being dragged to this bike shop is Ella's worst nightmare

and she's clearly massively bored,

but we're about to make her day a whole lot better.

-Let's go.

-Now!

Quick, quick, quick, quick. Let's go!

Hope she can't actually see us.

We're at risk of getting spotted here as we carefully cross the road.

Nigel's doing a great job of distracting Ella,

while we sneak round the back of the shop.

But Ella does not have a clue, so I think we are going to be all right.

-Oh, wow!

Ella, you got in touch with the show,

asking if we could help you out

and you have actually been chosen to build your very own dream den.

-Yes!

-High five, Ella! Yes!

-High five, Ella.

I thought that my mum was going to take me to the opticians

while Dad stayed here in the bike shop.

And when they said, "Oh, we'll just be a minute"

and I was like "Oh, no".

Hello, we're looking for an Ella.

Even though I hate this place, it was definitely worth coming in.

You have actually been chosen to build your very own dream den.

-Yes!

-High five, Ella! Yes!

I'm really excited about getting my dream den made.

It means I can escape from the bikes into a safe haven.

Our first port of call is the Dengineers' Mobile HQ,

which has got some really cool technology to get this den on track.

Ella wants a den that will get her as far away from anything

to do with bikes as possible,

so she's decided on a Hawaiian beach hut.

We're going to download all the ideas

that are in your head and input them into our amazing den design.

-Shall we have a little look?

-Yeah.

-Let's go.

-So, there's loads and loads...

-I like that one.

Yeah, surfboards is a great shout.

I like these flowers. They're a pretty colour.

-They kind of immediately remind you of Hawaii, don't they?

-Yeah.

-Look.

-Ooh, yeah!

We could have them, like, outside it.

These are like, what, wooden carvings?

I like that one.

Why did you choose that, Ella, cos you what that colour in or...?

Yes, I love the, like, kind of gradient effect.

I want everything to be bright and vibrant.

Ella's created a mood board full of colour,

with a chilled-out Hawaiian beach vibe.

Well, I reckon that looks amazing. Are you happy with it?

-Yeah, great.

-Excellent!

-I reckon it's time we go and get you kitted up.

-Yeah.

With Ella kitted out in her Dengineers' overalls,

we're joined by her mum, dad and brother, Alec,

to have a look at the walled garden to the side of Ella's house

where the den is going to be.

So this is it.

-It look like it's going be hard work.

-Yeah.

But, trust me, we can do it.

You lot are going to be impressed,

but I'm afraid to say that is the last thing

I'm going to say to you about the den.

Thanks for giving us the space.

But, for now, you ain't welcome.

Yeah, guys, it's Dengineers only,

so I need to take you guys out of here. Come on. Off we go.

Ella's family will not be allowed in this part of the garden

until it's time for the big den reveal in a few days' time.

For now, it's Ella who's in charge.

-Now they're gone, you know what that means, don't you?

-Dengineers.

Yes, we're going to get down to business

and I'm about to introduce you

to somebody who is an absolute expert, Ella.

-Honestly, he will make the dream den, just for you.

-Cool.

-Are you ready to meet him?

-Yeah.

-Let's get him in.

Sege has been in the building biz for 36 years

and is a legend in the den-building world.

Sege knows what Ella wants her Hawaiian Den to be like

and if anyone can make her den dreams come true, it's this guy.

What are you thinking, Sege, about this den? Is it doable?

Very doable, yeah.

What about if we build this shed out of loads of different

coloured planks that look like you've found them off the beach.

-They're beach-weathered.

-Ah!

-You know and they're sort of...

-Like driftwood?

They're there all different.... Exactly, all different colours.

-How does that sound?

-It sounds brilliant.

-I think that would be brilliant.

-Yeah!

Amazing. Sege, can I add something in?

We've got all this space out here.

-What about if we have some sand outside the den?

-Ah, what? Easy.

-Wouldn't that be nice?

-Yeah.

-Your own little beach.

-Yeah.

-It'll look beautiful.

-Amazing.

-I can just imagine it now.

As well as the man-made beach and the painted wooden planks,

the outside of Ella's Hawaiian Den will also be decorated with

some awesome wooden carvings

and a beach-styled juice bar.

The inside will be a proper chill-out area for Ella and her friends.

This den is going to be outstanding!

But it's going to take a lot of work from The Dengineers

and the first thing they need to do is clear out the garden.

-Goodbye, chicken shed.

-Yeah.

To get the area cleared, the Dengineers' need to take

down an old disused chicken coop,

and it's proving to be a big job.

-It's pretty sturdy.

-Yeah, it is pretty sturdy, isn't it?

Ooh, that's got it.

And while it's all kicking off,

Ella's mum and dad can't see any of it.

Oops. There we are!

I'm a bit worried to be honest,

to be locked out of the garden for a whole week.

You never know what she's got planned.

I think just bang them off.

I'm looking for something different,

a bit of a change in there. I'm quite excited by that.

She's a very creative individual.

You've no idea what she's going to come up,

but I'm sure it's going to be exciting.

I feel really lucky that I'm going to get my dream den built by Sege

and he's an amazing designer so it's going to be great.

It's been a productive first day for our Dengineers.

The side garden is all cleared and ready for action.

It's super early in the morning and ground workers Trevor and Paul

have arrived to lay the foundations for Ella's den.

-Morning.

-Morning.

-How's it going?

It's going all right. Is that toast nice?

-Jam.

-Jam.

It's really early. It's, like, 7.42am

and I've only just got out of bed, so I'm really tired.

And they've just come out of nowhere, practically.

Trevor and Paul are going to lay the foundations that will support

the whole structure of the den.

First, they remove the layer of soil,

then they lay down some gravel...

..and compress it down with the whacker

to create a more solid base.

Finally, they put down the concrete slabs that the legs of the den

will stand on.

Now it's time for the real work to start.

Do you want to hand that round to Sege?

Although the den design has come from Ella's ideas,

she has no clue what Sege has in store

or what the finished den will look like.

And now they're installing the base,

which is the first part of it, of course.

And just as... This is the moment of truth, to see

if it fits. What do you think, Ella?

It's really exciting and it looks really good.

How's it going Phil? Is it...?

Fits a treat!

-We're on. It fits.

-Yeah.

-Ella, you wanted this gradient sea?

-Yeah.

Sort of water washing up onto the beach,

so we thought what we'd do is, we'd use it as a floor.

But the secret is, it's all part of a bigger picture still to come.

Sege has designed this den to sit on stilts above the ground.

This is because traditional beach huts are designed this way to

allow the sea to flow underneath.

And in this case, it will also to allow air to

circulate around the whole of the den to avoid it becoming damp.

As the Dengineers carry on getting the structure up,

I thought I'd grab a chat with Ella's mum and dad.

So, guys, it's clear to see that you love bikes!

You've got bikes literally everywhere.

And I heard a little rumour, Dad...

-Yes?

-..that you were storing bikes in her bedroom!

-Yes! Yes, I was.

-What?!

Well, we've got to put them somewhere

and Ella's room was...

had some space in it.

I'm not going to lie, she sounds like the most tolerant kid in the world.

She is really good.

She's very tolerate. She puts up with a lot, she really does.

So what do you think this den is going to mean to Ella?

This is going to mean everything to Ella.

it's going to be her own special place, where she can get away

from the bikes and the chat and the stuff and all the gear everywhere.

And she can go out with her friends and just be herself.

It's clear that this den is going to mean a lot to Ella,

so it's really important that we get it right.

And, luckily, Ella seems pretty pleased with how it's all

looking so far.

These are actually my favourite colours,

but I actually think they go together really well.

I think they do, too, yeah.

The walls are made of oak, which is a timber so robust

and hard-wearing, it should last a lifetime.

And it doesn't stop there.

To keep up with the Hawaiian theme,

Sege has designed the den to have a juice bar built into it.

-Perfect!

-What do you think? Is that perfect?

That's perfect!

The juice bar may be looking perfect, but the Dengineers

need to get the rest of the walls up and get the roof on before

the end of the day, so that the den will be weatherproof overnight.

This will be a mono-pitch roof,

which means a single roof surface

that slopes down, so that the rain can run off.

Now it's time for a Den Hack.

Have you ever been down the beach

and found yourself with a handful of change for your ice cream

and headphones and had nowhere to put it?

Well, now you can solve this problem with one simple solution.

It's easy.

All you need is your old sunscreen bottle.

Make sure it's empty and carefully cut off the top of the bottle.

Grab your change and headphones,

put them into the bottle

and close the lid!

Wow!

So there you have it. Your very own sunscreen safe.

Which way to the beach?

Oh, that way.

As the work on the Hawaiian Den continues,

the Dengineers get a visit from a pretty special guest.

Unbeknownst to Ella, Sege has had his mate,

affectionately known as Chainsaw Nancy,

make some incredible bespoke sculptures for her den...

How cool is that?

..and she's about to see them for the first time.

Oh, wow. That's so cool!

The Tiki pole and chair shaped like a pineapple are looking good,

but there's still a few jobs to do.

Chainsaw Nancy is an expert in the woodcarving world,

is fully trained to do this specialist job,

and is wearing special safety gear.

It's really loud!

Ella couldn't help with the chain sawing,

but she can help with a final sand down.

OK, then, Ella, I think that's good enough.

Yeah, this is going to go great in my den.

The Hawaiian Den is well under way

and Ella has been working pretty hard,

so I'm going to give her a little treat

to help get her in the Hawaiian zone.

I'm taking her for an indoor surfing lesson.

This looks amazing!

Surfing has been a part of Hawaiian life for hundreds of years

and if Ella ever gets the chance to go there,

this lesson will help her get stuck into the waves.

-Excellent! All right, let's get going.

-Let's go!

Yeah, great start, Lauren.

But, hey, if at first you don't succeed,

just fail again!

Yes. Now you're getting the hang of it.

Hey, I'm doing it!

THEY BOTH SCREAM

Ella's a natural.

Well, most of the time.

So, this is the most amazing thing I think I've ever done, ever.

Like, Ella is amazing.

Meanwhile, I'm struggling to just even get in the thing.

It's actually quite embarrassing.

I've never seen that surfing style before, Lauren.

Ella has totally got the hang of this!

Nearly.

Yeah, all right, Ella. You're just showing off now.

And one final trick.

Nailed it!

I actually felt like all Hawaiian inside

and I'm really excited to go and build my den now.

While Ella and Lauren have been having a blast on the boards,

work back at the build has been cranked up a notch.

The canopy over the front of the den

and the door are being covered with bamboo.

Bamboo is naturally waterproof,

so this material makes for a fantastic shelter for Ella's

den and is also in keeping with the Hawaiian theme.

With the exterior of the den in good shape

and the bamboo canopy and door in place

the Dengineers are all going to have some well-earned sleep.

It's day thee of the build,

and with the den well under way,

I've come to check out the action.

So, Ella, give me the update. Whereabouts are we so far?

So, we've basically got the whole structure in,

-and today it's just painting.

-That's amazing.

-I'm really surprised it's come along so quickly.

-Yeah.

I love it and I love also this man, down here, just there.

-Is he going to stay?

-Yeah!

Cool, great. Are you all right down there?

Yeah, I'm fine, thanks.

-OK, shall we go and get a move on, and give him a hand?

-Yeah.

Come on, then, let's go.

It really is all hands on deck right now in Ella's garden.

While me and Ella sand down a surf board that will

feature inside the den, we've also got electrics going in,

drilling,

sawing,

and, of course, painting galore.

But it's not just wood that's been getting painted.

-Do you know what it is?

-No.

Sege has also had something pretty outstanding created for Ella.

-Wow!

-My goodness!

That's awesome.

-How fantastic.

-Here's comes the sun.

-How good is that going to be?

-That is great.

-That looks so cool.

-That looks amazing. Wow.

We're going to install that now, across the back wall there.

-Yeah.

-So, can you see that?

-You see where the sea has washed in over the floor?

-Yeah, I can.

-Oh, yeah.

-So this will be the backdrop to the sea.

Oh, so it all, like, fades...

All fades away into the horizon there.

-Oh, Sege, you've done a good job, haven't you?

-Oh, well.

-Fab!

-It'll be like sitting on a beach.

I kind of feel like we're already in a bit like Hawaii already.

-I'm loving it.

-Yeah. Get the grass skirts on.

I don't want to spoil the fun, but time for hula-ing is over.

As the mural is set into position,

Sege is becoming worried about the amount of work still to do.

The Dengineers are now running behind

and the atmos on site is feeling pretty serious.

More to that side, please.

But Lauren and Ella have got a plan to get everyone

back into the Hawaiian spirit!

Let's go and get them!

Lauren and Ella are going to hand out these garlands,

which are a symbol of affection in Hawaii.

-Ah.

-Ooh, I have yes!

But amongst all the LOLs, Lauren spots a mistake.

-It's terrible!

-Oh, Sege, it'll be all right!

-It'll be all right, we'll get it sorted.

-We'll have to fix it.

As painter Paul fixes the sign,

the Dengineers start putting the final touches onto the den.

Ella will now not see her den until the Big Den Reveal tomorrow,

and there's loads she hasn't seen yet,

including a cool upcycle project

that will turn an old bike into a stool to go outside the juice bar.

Ella's mum, Kath, has had this mountain bike for over 20 years.

It has been taken on cycling trips all over the world,

including here in Wales when Ella was just five years old.

It hasn't been used much recently,

so Kath has handed it over to us.

First, it's over to fabricator Steve

to weld the bike into the correct shape

so that it can be used as a stool.

It's not looking very Hawaiian,

so design assistant Ashley needs

to sand off the existing paint, and then re-paint it to make it

look super-cool on the outside of the den.

With the bike cleverly attached to the wall,

and a few finishing touches later,

the cycle stool is coming along nicely.

And that is our upcycle project finished!

With the upcycle done, there's nothing more we can do for today.

It's going to take one last push in the morning for the Dengineers

to get Ella's dream den done.

It's the morning of the Big Den Reveal here at Ella's house

and the excitement really is in the air.

It really, really is and in just a few hours Ella,

her friends and family

will be seeing the completed den for the very first time.

Ooh! I'm so excited.

-Let's go and see how they're getting on.

We're getting a bit stressed now.

-You know, still a fair bit to do.

With the Big Den Reveal looming, it's taking one massive

push from the Dengineers to get the den finished!

After four days of hard graft,

The Dengineers have transformed

the wasteland in Ella's side garden into a fantastic Hawaiian hideaway.

This is where she can finally get away from all of her family's

bikes and cycle gear,

and it's now time for her to see it for the first time.

two,

Oh, my gosh!

That's amazing!

When I was just standing in front of the den

and they took their hands away from my eyes,

I was just thinking, this is amazing.

I never dreamed it would be like this!

-Do you like it?

-I love it! Oh, wow!

I was actually feeling a little bit emotional.

I was just so happy that this had finally happened.

Ella is going to love kicking back in her new Hawaiian paradise.

The Dengineers have created a totally laid-back beach

vibe in the interior of the den.

But what will her friends and family think?

Oh, it was incredible to see what the Dengineers have made.

Just amazing. Transformed the area.

No way, look what's happened to the bike.

That's my old bike.

I felt a bit emotional when I saw the bicycle actually because that

was a bike I used to ride all the time and it's been a bit neglected,

so I'm really glad it's been upcycled and I'm thrilled to see it.

-Can we go in and have a look?

-Yeah, go on, in you go!

You can really see Ella's personality in the den

and it was bright, lots of colour in there, all sorts of things going on.

It really reflects Ella, all through.

I love the interior of the den. It's snug and cosy

and I think it's just going to be perfect.

It's even got a key.

Yeah, I'm keeping Alec out.

Is that going to keep me out, too?

Yeah, it's going to keep everyone out.

Having that den is going to mean that I can escape somewhere

and I don't have to deal with the bikes everywhere.

It's going to mean that I've just got a little personal space

and somewhere to relax.

Oh, I think we should let them get into the Hawaiian spirit, don't you?

-Yeah, let's do it!
