-I'm Mark. -And I'm Lauren. -And this is The Dengineers. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
The show that puts you in charge of building your very own dream den. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:08
THEY EXCLAIM | 0:00:08 | 0:00:09
Dens for adventure. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
Hello, trap door. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:12
Hanging out with your friends and family. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
This den is the best thing ever. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
And dens built to fulfil your dreams. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
-It's more than he could ever want. -Oh, Mum! -Ohh! | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
Whatever your ideas, the Dengineers team are here | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
to transform your inspiration into amazing spaces. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
Built especially for you. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
-ALL: -This den is done. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
-Hello! -Hello. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
Yes, you, Lola. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
Let's do it. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:48
-That is epic. -Really happy. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
It's amazing. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
Guys, you are in for a treat, because, today, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
the Dengineers are going big. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
That's right, we've come to this community centre in Manchester | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
for an extra-special den. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
Soon there will be loads of kids here | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
joining in in a half-term play scheme. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
And they have no idea that me and Mark are going to be hiding, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
ready to surprise them. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
And most importantly, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:22
they have no idea that they're going to be having a dream den made. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
-I love it! Come on, we'd better go and hide. -Come on. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
Today's den is for the Youth On Solid Ground community centre, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
a BBC Children in Need-supported project in Manchester. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
I love coming here because I can have some fresh air, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
I can have a bit of fun. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
I get to do lots of things, like football. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
Sport is massive here, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:53
and is used to help the young people work on their teamwork, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
communication and confidence. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
Let go. Run. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
I enjoy doing sport because it gets you fit and active. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
If we had better sports facilities here, it would be good | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
because you get to learn how to play cricket properly, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
tennis properly and football. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
My mum doesn't live with me at home, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
so it's important for me to come here | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
because, obviously, there's so many, like, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
influences which I can reflect on, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
and so many people who, like, are there for me. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
This community hub is so important. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
It brings so many young people together | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
from different backgrounds and cultures. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
If there's any issues around crime, antisocial behaviour, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
community cohesion, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
it's easy for us to address these issues with the young people | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
and bring communities together. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
This place is vital to the community, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
and although it's used by hundreds of children every week, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
the outside space is in desperate need of work, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
as it's nearly impossible for them | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
to do the sports and activities that they love. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
These guys need help from the Dengineers. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
Today, the community centre are running | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
one of their popular play schemes... | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
and our sneaky team have been in there, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
rigging their trusty minicams. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
Although the adults are in on the act, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:18
the children have no idea | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
that me and Lauren are hiding out over the road, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
ready to surprise them with the news | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
that they're going to have their dream den made. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
-That was close. -It's fine, it's fine. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
So, basically, just through that door | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
are loads of kids who are about to be told | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
that they're going to have their dream den built | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
here at the community centre. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:45
This is so exciting! | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
-Hello! -Hello. -EXCITED SHOUTS | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
How are you doing? | 0:03:50 | 0:03:51
How are you? | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
-Hiya. -Are you all right? | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
Are you ready for the news? | 0:03:57 | 0:03:58
I am Mark and this is Lauren, | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
and we are from CBBC's The Dengineers. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
And we're here to tell you guys | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
that you're going to have your very own... | 0:04:06 | 0:04:10
massive den made right here at the community centre. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
CHEERING | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
When I saw Mark and Lauren, | 0:04:17 | 0:04:18
I thought it wasn't true that they were here. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
-Hello! -Hello. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
CHEERING How are you doing? | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought I was dreaming. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
I think everyone was, like, so happy and then so, like, delighted | 0:04:30 | 0:04:35
that we're going to get a den, cos it's really cool. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
We've never had anything like it before. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
Who is excited for this massive den? | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
THEY SHOUT OUT | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
It's been hard work to keep it a secret from the children. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:49
As much as it's been exciting, it's been nerve-racking, | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
cos it's just one little slip-up | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
and then that can just blow the whole thing. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
THEY SHOUT OUT | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
I don't know what's going to happen here, | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
I don't know what you're going to do to our place, | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
so, yeah, I'm looking forward to it, absolutely. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
Our first port of call is the Dengineers mobile HQ, | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
which has some mega-cool technology to get this den on track. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
And it's Aisha and Abdul | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
who are going to be representing the whole group. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
Welcome to the Dengineers mobile HQ. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:19
This is where we're going to download | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
all of the ideas that you've got in your head | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
onto this fancy old computer | 0:05:24 | 0:05:25
so we can start putting together some ideas for your den. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
-Are you up for it? -BOTH: -Yeah. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
Let's go for it. What's the initial idea? | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
To make the den, like, more sporty and bright colours. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:36
Dive in, find some pictures you think represents that idea. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
-I like the tennis. -Tennis, nice. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
Why have you chosen that, Abdul? | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
I like it cos they zoom into the foot | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
and the ball is like they're going to take the perfect free kick. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
-And you love football. -Yeah. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
I think we should have a running track | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
because, like, loads of people like running, relay and cross-country. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
That's a really cool thing, cos it's really inclusive. | 0:05:57 | 0:05:59
-Everyone can join in, can't they? -Yeah. -Which is really cool. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:02
-It doesn't really matter if you're good or bad at it. -Absolutely. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
-Everyone can run. -Perfect. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:06
-On the walls, we might have some rock climbing gear. -Yeah. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
-That would be cool. -Like that one. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
-Nice. -I like that. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:14
I like this one, because it shows all the sports that we can play. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:19
-Good idea. -Yeah. -That sums the den, doesn't it? | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
Little bit of everything, isn't it? | 0:06:21 | 0:06:22
And we'll pick this picture, | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
because it's a nice place where you can hang out, | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
and there's loads of street art that people really like. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
-I really like it. -There's going to be quite a lot of hard work, | 0:06:29 | 0:06:31
because we're not just making a den for one person. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
We're making it for loads of people. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
This mood board is a sports lover's dream | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
as well as being cool and colourful. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
This den is going to be quite a challenge. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
And we've got just the designer for the job. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
Meet Sege, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
a creative genius with over 30 years in the building biz. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
He knows how to nail a massive project just like this one. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
-Sege, how are you? -Mark, very well. How are you? -Nice to see you. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
-Meet the guys. -Hiya. Hiya, chaps. -ALL: -Hi. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
Pleased to meet you all. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
Now, this is Sege. He is the den-building machine. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
He's going to make this den incredible. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
Tell them what's going to happen here, Sege. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:18
There's loads and loads, Mark. I know all the things that you want. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
We've got stuff for you to climb on, stuff for you to play sports on. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
-Ohh! -We've got... Oh, we have, yeah. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
We've got some fantastic stuff for you to play sports on. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
We've got a stage, we've got a chill-out area backstage, | 0:07:30 | 0:07:32
which is really, really cool as well, | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
where you can do lots of performing on. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
We've got a great running track | 0:07:36 | 0:07:37
which is going to test your sprinting, | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
and we've got a fantastic pitch. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
-Are you excited? ALL: -Yeah! | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
-Do you like Sege's ideas? -Yeah! | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
-Are we ready to build it? -I think we are, yeah. -Come on, let's go. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
Let's get going. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:49
Sege has designed the den to sweep around the whole community centre. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:54
There'll be a multi-use sports pitch and a 25-metre running track | 0:07:54 | 0:07:58
with a huge climbing commentary tower at one end. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:02
There'll also be a performance stage with a cool backstage area | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
and some other surprises along the way, too. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
It's time for the Dengineers to get stuck into the groundworks. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
First, they need to move the container | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
to the other side of the site. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:19
Then they can dig up the ground where the running track will go... | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
..so they can put a layer of cement down | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
which the track will eventually sit on top of. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
They're also digging a massive hole | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
for the sunken trampoline to go into... | 0:08:39 | 0:08:43
and preparing the ground for the stage and climbing tower. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:47
It's been a totally action-packed start for the den, | 0:08:47 | 0:08:50
and with the groundworks almost complete, | 0:08:50 | 0:08:52
it's time to make this incredibly messy site "Dengineers only". | 0:08:52 | 0:08:57
Are you confident the Dengineers are going to make this happen? | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
-ALL: -Ooooh! -No! | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
No confidence whatsoever? Are YOU confident it's going to happen? | 0:09:06 | 0:09:09
-ALL: -Yeah! | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
-Right, you see this sign? -Yeah. -Dengineers only. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
That means you lot have got to shoo. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
So take one last look and then sling your hook. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
-What?! -All right? | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
Off you go. Dengineers only now. THEY ALL TALK AT ONCE | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
Get off. Go on. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:26
-KIDS CHANT: -Only Dengineers! Only Dengineers! | 0:09:26 | 0:09:29
Only Dengineers! Only Dengineers! | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
Only Dengineers! | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
Now we've got rid of the adults, | 0:09:36 | 0:09:38
it's time for the Dengineers to properly take over | 0:09:38 | 0:09:40
and for the real fun to begin. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
This den is going to be huge, and to get it done in time, | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
the team are really going to have to crack on. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
There's so much going on today | 0:09:50 | 0:09:51
that I'm going to be making sure that everybody, | 0:09:51 | 0:09:54
all the Dengineers, are hard at work, | 0:09:54 | 0:09:56
because it's so important that everybody is working. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
What have you done to her back? | 0:10:02 | 0:10:05
-Aisha! -Turn round a minute. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:07
Look at this. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:08
What?! | 0:10:10 | 0:10:11
You know when you put it in the pot? Don't just let it drip. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:13
You're going to have to just brush it off the side like that. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
Today is all about the stage. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:18
To stay on track, | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
the team need to get the base in, the walls up and the roof on | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
all by the end of the day. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
The stage is progressing really, really well. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
At the moment, the weather's holding us up a little bit. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:30
It's really causing a bit of a problem. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
We're going to have to try and get used to it and get round it, | 0:10:33 | 0:10:36
which we are doing, but all's good. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
And while the team push on, | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
I'm going to have a chat with adult helpers Majid and Karis. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
I wanted to talk about the community centre first of all. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
What's it like around here? | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
Well, before we were offering our services, | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
you know, crime was pretty high, | 0:10:52 | 0:10:54
antisocial behaviour was really high, | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
so within the first three years of setting up, | 0:10:56 | 0:10:58
we reduced antisocial behaviour by 73%. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:02
-73%? That's almost three quarters it's come down? -Yeah. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:06
There wasn't much going on for young people. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:07
There were no sort of like purpose youth centres | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
or community centres or sports centres around the community, | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
so young people just hanging on the streets, hanging in the park. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
We provide open access youth clubs, play schemes, | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
after-school clubs and a lot of sports programmes. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
You're literally taking these people who had nowhere better to go, | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
bringing them into the heart of the community | 0:11:26 | 0:11:28
and making everyone sort of feel like a bit more of a family. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:32
Yeah, everybody knows each other, everyone's safe, | 0:11:32 | 0:11:34
-and they all play together nicer. -Yeah. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
So, finally, | 0:11:36 | 0:11:37
what difference do you think this den is going to make to the guys? | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
Oh, it's going to make such a massive difference. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
It's going to be amazing. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:44
I'm sure the young people are going to be over the moon. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
They're going to be so excited. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:48
I think, from the little bit we've seen from far away, | 0:11:48 | 0:11:50
you know, the whole building's been transformed. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
Seen so many things going in, I think it's going to be amazing. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:56
They're going to love it. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
It's been a tough day for our Dengineers, | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
and as they push to get done what they need to | 0:12:03 | 0:12:05
before they can go home, | 0:12:05 | 0:12:07
classic Wrighty wants to embrace the sports theme | 0:12:07 | 0:12:09
with a keepy-uppy challenge. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:12
Here we go, right. Here's for a ten. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:13
One, two, three, four... | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
Oh, it's gone over the fence! | 0:12:15 | 0:12:17
-It's not rugby. -I know, mate. I know. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
What about we get one of the Dengineers in? | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
Simon, give me that. In you go. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
Are you ready? Are you ready for this? | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
I'm ready. Let me just get this shot. Hang on. Hang on. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
One, two, three, four, five... | 0:12:31 | 0:12:33
Six. Ohh! | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
Not bad from old Simon. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:37
Now let the pro have a go. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
-KIDS: -1, 2, 3, 4, | 0:12:39 | 0:12:42
-5, 6... -Ohh! | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
..7, 8, 9, 10, | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
11, 12, 13, 14, | 0:12:47 | 0:12:49
15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, | 0:12:49 | 0:12:53
21, 22... | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
No! That's a cheat! | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
-The ball! I got the ball. -That's a cheat! | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
It's the start of a new day. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
You just want it to move that way slightly, towards Greg. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:11
And Sege and the team really need to get going with the commentary tower. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:15
This morning, we're building the log climb commentary tower, | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
which is becoming a bit of a feat, to say the least. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
We're all sort of struggling. They're heavy logs. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
A lot of puffing and panting. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:25
So we're starting to build the main structure, | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
and it's looking very, very good, very interesting. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
The structure is made out of spruce tree logs, | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
and the biggest ones weigh around 180kg. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:38
The positioning of the logs is crucial, | 0:13:38 | 0:13:40
and it's going to take some major concentration from the team. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
While the commentary tower continues skywards, | 0:13:45 | 0:13:47
it's time for an upcycle. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49
OK, guys, see this ugly old container? | 0:13:54 | 0:13:56
All the paint's peeling off it and it looks a bit tatty, doesn't it? | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
Well, this is going to be our cool upcycle project, OK? | 0:13:59 | 0:14:03
So what we're going to do is, we're going to sand it down, | 0:14:03 | 0:14:05
get all these ugly bits off, and then we're going to redecorate it | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
so it looks really smart and new for your new den. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
Let's get sanding! | 0:14:11 | 0:14:12
This container is used by the centre for storage, | 0:14:12 | 0:14:16
so it'll be great for the team to get it looking super fly | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
and in keeping with the rest of the den. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
Oh, that looks like good, hard work from you all. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:25
Once all the rust and peeling paint has been sanded off, | 0:14:26 | 0:14:29
the painting team can move in | 0:14:29 | 0:14:31
they've brought in the A team. That's us. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:35
Guys, give our camera a wave. | 0:14:35 | 0:14:37
With the container now a blank canvas, | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
it's ready for Dengineer artist Paul to finish off later | 0:14:43 | 0:14:47
with some cool artwork. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:48
And while the team carry on with the build, | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
I've brought our young Dengineers for a super sporty treat | 0:14:54 | 0:14:57
to the National Cycling Centre in Manchester. | 0:14:57 | 0:14:59
It's the official training track for Team GB. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:05
Come on, Mark. Faster! | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
And it's where many of the team's medal-winning | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
Olympic and Paralympic cyclists train. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:13
-Hello, guys. ALL: -Hello! | 0:15:13 | 0:15:16
But before these guys can get on the track, | 0:15:18 | 0:15:20
they're going to have some tuition from bike expert Lisa. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:24
The first thing we're going to do is you're going to practise | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
starting and stopping. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
Wow, that was super. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:33
These are special racing bikes designed for velodrome cycling. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:37
Unlike normal bikes, their feet are clipped into the pedals, | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
meaning they can't put them down when they start and stop, | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
so they have to use the rail. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:46
Pedal, pedal, pedal! | 0:15:46 | 0:15:47
Normally when I'm on a bike, I normally put my feet down to stop | 0:15:47 | 0:15:50
or press the brakes, but on this bike, it had no brakes | 0:15:50 | 0:15:53
and your feet were attached to the pedals, so it was harder to stop. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:57
Oh, are you all right? | 0:15:59 | 0:16:01
Slow right down. Slow right down. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
Once they've mastered the art of stopping, | 0:16:05 | 0:16:07
it's time for them to hit the track. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
Looking good. Keep going, keep going. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:12
Push your foot to the floor. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:15
Nice and fast, come on, come up the track. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
Come on, keep pedalling. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:20
SHOUTS OF ENCOURAGEMENT | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
Well done, that's good. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:23
It's a bit nervous when you look at it, when you go on the slope. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:25
But when you're riding, you just don't think about it. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:28
You keep on going, it's easy. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:30
Pedal hard, pedal! | 0:16:30 | 0:16:32
Push, look forwards. Pedal hard, pedal hard. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:34
It felt really, like, unstable, and it felt like | 0:16:34 | 0:16:37
you were going to fall off, | 0:16:37 | 0:16:39
but then, after that, it was good fun. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:42
Hello! | 0:16:42 | 0:16:44
I think that deserves a high-five. Well done. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
All of you, amazing. Well done, guys. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:54
Give yourself a round of applause. Brilliant. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:57
Back at the build, the team have had a successful day. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:11
The commentary tower is up and standing at its full height | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
of three-and-a-half metres. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
The backstage chill-out area is taking shape. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:21
And the guys have put in the awesome sunken trampoline. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
They're on track for now, but there's still tons of work to do. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:30
The next couple of days are going to be full-on if this den | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
is going to get done in time. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
The Dengineers have been absolutely brilliant today. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
Everybody has mucked in again on another tough day. It's been hard. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:42
People are exhausted now, but I think we've achieved a lot, | 0:17:42 | 0:17:45
so really, really happy. Really pleased. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
It's day three of the build. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:51
So, here we've got the stage. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:56
Obviously it's not done as yet, still loads of work to do. | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
We're going to get cracking on that in a little bit, | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
but, until then, I think somebody's already enjoying it. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:04
It's a really early start this morning. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:11
Everybody's turned up, everybody's eager and willing to go. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:14
Weather's great, rubber safety floor guys have turned up. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:17
It's going to be colour, colour, colour all the way today. Brilliant. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
Can't wait. Excited. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:22
The rubber crumb safety flooring will be used | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
for the multi-purpose sports pitch and the running track. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:29
But before any of it can be laid down, | 0:18:29 | 0:18:31
the Dengineers need to get their power tools out. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:34
Using a disc cutter, they're cutting a small trench in the concrete. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:41
This might seem like an odd thing to do, but it's really important. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:45
Concrete expands in warmer weather and contracts when it's cold. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:52
These trenches we're cutting are called expansion joints. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
They allow the concrete to move | 0:18:55 | 0:18:57
underneath the rubber crumb safety flooring. | 0:18:57 | 0:19:00
If we didn't do this, the concrete would crack randomly, | 0:19:00 | 0:19:03
which could cause big problems in the future. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
This flooring is made using recycled tyres, | 0:19:08 | 0:19:11
and then bound together using polyurethane. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:14
It's going to be great for the centre | 0:19:19 | 0:19:21
as it's one of the safest surfaces available, | 0:19:21 | 0:19:23
usable in all weathers, | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
fast draining and very resistant. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
While the floor goes down, our young Dengineers | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
are busy painting the back of the skills board. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
Then artist Paul is going to paint some super cool images on the front. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:43
So how will they actually use this? | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
What we're going to do is stick on here, now, | 0:19:46 | 0:19:48
all the labels of all the holes, so, in other words, football, netball... | 0:19:48 | 0:19:52
Oh, OK. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
-Skills tester, you see? -Got it! | 0:19:54 | 0:19:56
-Cricket. -Oh, brilliant. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:59
With only two days to go until the big day, | 0:20:01 | 0:20:04
the team are full steam ahead. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:06
The children have been a massive help, | 0:20:06 | 0:20:08
but they now have to leave the site | 0:20:08 | 0:20:10
and won't see the final den until the big reveal. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:13
So far, it's been very exciting. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:16
There's been a lot of builders going in and out, | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
and it looks like they're working very hard. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
I am really looking forward to seeing this, | 0:20:21 | 0:20:23
but I'm not sure if Sege can do it in time, | 0:20:23 | 0:20:25
cos there's a lot more things to go, | 0:20:25 | 0:20:27
but I'm hoping that it will and I'm really excited for it. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:31
With just one day to go before the big reveal, | 0:20:38 | 0:20:41
the weather has taken a turn for the worse, | 0:20:41 | 0:20:45
and it's causing big problems for the build. | 0:20:45 | 0:20:48
It's affecting the paintwork, it's affecting the soft-floor surfacing. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:52
A lot to do, so many problems in our way. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:56
The team are bringing all the items they can indoors. | 0:20:56 | 0:21:00
Dengineers are having to work under pieces of tarpaulin... | 0:21:02 | 0:21:07
and gazebos are going up over the rubber crumb flooring | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
to try and keep it dry. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:12
With this weather that we've got now, | 0:21:12 | 0:21:13
it's having a massive effect on the safety flooring | 0:21:13 | 0:21:17
because they literally just can't lay the floor in this weather. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:22
Unfortunately, there's a chance it's not going to get done, | 0:21:22 | 0:21:25
which is going to be really disappointing for everybody, | 0:21:25 | 0:21:28
but we're going to try our best. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:31
But it looks like it could be Sege's lucky day. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:38
Look at that blue sky. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:40
Eh? I mean, this is what we want. Look at it. No more rain. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:44
With the weather holding off, | 0:21:47 | 0:21:48
the team are finally able to start getting | 0:21:48 | 0:21:50
the next layer of flooring down. | 0:21:50 | 0:21:52
This is what will really bring some colour and excitement to the den. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:57
They can also start putting down the turf, | 0:22:01 | 0:22:03
which will be crucial in making the den look finished. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
Although the Dengineers are now able to go full steam ahead, | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
they're not where they wanted to be at this point... | 0:22:11 | 0:22:15
and there's still a lot to get done before the big den reveal tomorrow. | 0:22:15 | 0:22:19
It's finally the day of the big den reveal, | 0:22:27 | 0:22:29
but because of the bad weather yesterday, | 0:22:29 | 0:22:32
the Dengineers are nowhere near ready. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:36
Sege, the den needs to be revealed today to the kids, and behind me... | 0:22:36 | 0:22:40
I don't even know how to describe this. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:42
What are we going to do about this? | 0:22:42 | 0:22:43
We've still got a fair bit to do. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
We're getting there, though, we're getting there. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:47
Are you? Because that looks horrendous. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:49
Well, yeah, it does at the moment. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:50
It's just a bit of old, wet mud, but we're going to get turf on that. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:53
It's going to look lovely and green. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
-When I was walking in, there's a running track over there. -Yeah. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58
It looks great. Two blue lines. But there's a middle line that's black. | 0:22:58 | 0:23:01
There's a bit of an issue with that running track over there | 0:23:01 | 0:23:03
because there should be three colours on there. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:05
It needs to be topped off with an orange. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:07
We're running behind on that one. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:09
What is the backup if we don't get that finished? | 0:23:09 | 0:23:11
Because they can't play on that. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:12
Well, there's no doubt about it. It's got to get finished. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:15
We're not even going to consider a backup. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:17
We're just going to get it done. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:19
'It's a race against time | 0:23:20 | 0:23:22
'for the team to get the rest of the coloured flooring down... | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
'..and finish off laying the turf.' | 0:23:26 | 0:23:28
Ah! | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30 | |
I'm going to drop it. I'm going to drop it. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:32
It's a good job we've got Children In Need's Pudsey here | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
to lend us a hand. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:38
Up you go, yeah. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:40
Easy. Got it. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:41
With the big reveal looming, people from the community | 0:23:44 | 0:23:48
have started to arrive, eager to see their sports-themed den. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:52
And with one last push from our Dengineers... | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
they have finally finished. | 0:23:56 | 0:23:59
Just one week ago, this community centre in Manchester was drab, | 0:24:09 | 0:24:13
empty and in need of repair. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:17
Now it's an explosion of fun and colour. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
With a 25 metre running track. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:24
A multi-use sports pitch. | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
Bleachers for spectators to sit on. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:31
A commentary tower, which is also an amazing climbing frame. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:36
The upcycled container and skills board. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:40
And, of course, the huge stage and backstage area | 0:24:41 | 0:24:44
for when people want to chill out and relax. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:47
And it's finally time for them to all see it. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:52
Guys, are you ready to see your den? | 0:24:52 | 0:24:55
CHEERING | 0:24:55 | 0:24:57
ALL: Five...four...three... two...one... | 0:25:01 | 0:25:05
CHEERING | 0:25:05 | 0:25:08
Come on in. Come on down. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:13
Do we like it? | 0:25:13 | 0:25:15
CHEERING | 0:25:15 | 0:25:18
-Have a look round. Come on. -Let's go for it. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:20
Go, go, go, go. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:22
I think it's so good. Oh, my gosh. It has so many different colours. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:34
It's amazing. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:37
What this den will mean for our community is a lot. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:40
It'll mean, like, something so special to everyone, like, | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
I don't think anyone will forget this day. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45
It's such a memorable moment. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:47
What's so cool about all these boards is they wipe off. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:56
So you can keep painting them over and over again in any colours, | 0:25:56 | 0:26:01
any faces, anybody you want. | 0:26:01 | 0:26:04
It has been brilliant. I couldn't have wanted a better reaction. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:07
It has made everything - all the hard work - worth it. | 0:26:07 | 0:26:10
It's just superb. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:12
My favourite bit of the den is probably the treehouse, | 0:26:20 | 0:26:22
where we can climb up and see all the other things around | 0:26:22 | 0:26:26
and just play up there. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:27
My favourite bit is the stage, | 0:26:29 | 0:26:31
because you get to act out anything you want, | 0:26:31 | 0:26:34
dance out whatever you want. | 0:26:34 | 0:26:36
On the backstage, the chill-out area, I think it's very cool, | 0:26:40 | 0:26:43
cos inside the tables, there's glass with pictures of a lot of memories. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:48
These are cool, aren't they? | 0:26:48 | 0:26:49
And the sunken trampoline is also proving to be | 0:26:52 | 0:26:55
a firm favourite with all of us. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
The Dengineers have done a brilliant job. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:03
I didn't think for one minute that they'd pull it off. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:05
This den will mean so much to the young people in the community. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:09
It's every kid's dream. It's going to be somewhere | 0:27:09 | 0:27:11
where they can all come and hang out together. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:13
It's colourful, it's safe, there's absolutely everything here for them. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:17
They're just going to be living the dream, really. | 0:27:17 | 0:27:20
Sege has done an amazing job. He has listened to the kids. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:28
This is what they asked for. | 0:27:28 | 0:27:29
They wanted trampolining, they wanted a running track, | 0:27:29 | 0:27:32
they wanted a treehouse, they wanted a sports pitch, | 0:27:32 | 0:27:34
they wanted a place where they could do arts. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:36
They've got it all. | 0:27:36 | 0:27:39
My hope for the future of this den is that it inspires budding athletes | 0:27:39 | 0:27:44
and it inspires budding actresses and actors | 0:27:44 | 0:27:47
and performers and artists. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:49
All of that would be wonderful. That would be a success. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:53
And after a final sign off from Pudsey, | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
there's just one thing left to do. | 0:27:57 | 0:28:00
ALL: This den is done! | 0:28:00 | 0:28:03
