On today's show we're going to be surprising a budding superstar DJ | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
by giving him his very own awesome den. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
And we're going to be doing the surprise right here at his house. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
Wikka-wikka, yeah! Make some noise! | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
That's exactly why you will never be a superstar DJ. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
-Come on. -What?! | 0:01:18 | 0:01:19
Today's Dengineer is 11-year-old Joshua from Cardiff. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:29
I need help from the Dengineers | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
because I'm really passionate about my music | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
and I really want to be a DJ one day. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
This budding DJ loves to play his music... | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
and play it loud. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
Joshua's family parties are really funky. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
He plays for his audience, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
and they're really cool and hip, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
and we love him. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:50
DJ Joshua is a hit with all the family, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
but his biggest fan is his brother Owen. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
Owen has Down's syndrome, which means he has a learning difficulty. | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
Joshua spends a lot of time with Owen. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
Owen is like his shadow. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
Whenever Joshua goes to his bedroom to play on his computer, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
Owen follows. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:09
Whenever Joshua starts DJing, Owen follows. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
These brothers are mega close. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
And even though they're in different classes school... | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
-ALL: -Hello, sut wyt ti? | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
Owen, here, still manages to hang out with his big bro. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
The class absolutely love Owen's visits. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
Whenever he happens to be passing our room, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
he'll pop in and have a little word with us. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
Big dot. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
One big dot. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
I think they're really close | 0:02:37 | 0:02:38
because they're always high-fiving each other... | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
and they're always hugging. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
It's really nice. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
I think Joshua deserves this den because we have to do things | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
slightly differently as a family, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
and it would be great for him to have time alone in the den | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
to be able to practise for something | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
that he's dreamt of doing for a long time. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
Please, Dengineers, I really need your help. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
Don't you worry, Joshua, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:02
our help is exactly what you're going to get. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
You just don't know it yet! | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
Joshua's school day is nearly over, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
which means we've got not a lot of time to get loads done, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
to get this house ready for the big surprise. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
We need to get our skates on, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:18
rigging the house with our super secret cameras. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
For this hit, we've brought our very own Dengineers Mobile disco | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
to add some DJ style to the surprise. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
I've got the perfect tune, absolute floor filler. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
-Go on. -You ready for this? -Yeah, yeah, go on. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
# Never gonna give you up... # | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
Oh, dad tune! | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
Exactly! | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
And that is some dad dancing! | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
It's time for Mum to go and pick Joshua and Owen up from school, | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
which is just around the corner... | 0:03:58 | 0:03:59
Which means we've only got a matter of minutes | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
to get all the family in position for the big surprise. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
-That's it, curled round. -Big family, I love it! -Come in! | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
MUSIC: This Is What You Came For by Calvin Harris | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
Joshua and his bro have arrived home. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
Time to get this party started. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
ALL CHEER | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
-Yes! -Wahey, how you doing?! -Hello, Joshua, how are you? | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
-Good, thanks. -Good! | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
My name is Lauren. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:33
And I'm Mark, and we're from CBBC's The Dengineers. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
-We've heard that you love to DJ, is that right? -Yeah. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:41
We've also heard that you need somewhere to practise your skills. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
-Yeah. -So what if we told you that you're going to come away with us | 0:04:44 | 0:04:49
to build your very own dream den? | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
How does that sound? | 0:04:53 | 0:04:54
-That's cool. -Really cool, isn't it?! | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
I'm very excited about getting my den built | 0:04:57 | 0:05:01
because it means I can have some space to practise on my own, | 0:05:01 | 0:05:06
and it's very, very, very exciting. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
I've got no idea what's going to happen, I'm very nervous. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
And I say, "Bring it on!" | 0:05:11 | 0:05:13
I'm looking forward to seeing what he designs, what he creates, | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
and having fun with it all. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
We have got so much work to do to get this den finished, | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
and exactly how you want it to be - | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
but I think it's only right we play one more tune | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
-and have a little boogie before we go, shall we? -Yeah. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
-Amazing! -Come on, family, let's do it! -Come on, Gran, let's dance! | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
Here we go! | 0:05:32 | 0:05:33
MUSIC: This Is What You Came For by Calvin Harris | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
Our first port of call is the Dengineers mobile HQ, | 0:05:41 | 0:05:44
which has some mega-cool technology to get this den rolling. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:47
Right, Josh - or should I call you DJ...? | 0:05:49 | 0:05:50
-JJ Josh. -JJ Josh! -DJ JJ Josh, I like it. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
-Love it. -Tongue twister. Now, listen, | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
this is for you to have the power to show us exactly what you want | 0:05:55 | 0:05:59
-in your den. -These are your ideas, | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
so I want you to get in there on that mahoosive screen | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
and pick out the stuff you like. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:06
-Are you ready? -Yeah. -So would you like your own, kind of, space, | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
like your own podium? | 0:06:10 | 0:06:11
A bit like this. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
-Yes! -You want to be above the crowd. -Yeah. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
What do you think about lighting? | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
I'd rather be something like this. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
-Perfect. -Oh, nice. Like, lasers. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
-Yeah. -If you have lasers in your den, I'm coming around every night. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:27
-You're not invited. -Oh, come on! | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
Now, the first party is obviously going to involve... | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
-Family and friends. -..family and friends. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
What picture would you say you'd like to be on here? | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
Well, this is a picture of my family. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
Oh! Look at you all! | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
Are you really close to your little brother? | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
-Yeah. -And why are you two so close? | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
Well, because he's got Down's syndrome, | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
-if he wants something then I do it for him. -Oh, that's good. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
-So he'll be loving it in there, won't he? -Yeah. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
I like that picture. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
-Nice. -Because you like sound. | 0:06:57 | 0:06:58
I mean, if you have that many speakers in there, | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
the whole street are going to hear you! | 0:07:01 | 0:07:02
Joshua has decided on a DJ podium with loads of booming speakers | 0:07:04 | 0:07:08
and laser lights to create an awesome atmosphere | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
to party with his pals. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
So, where are we thinking of having the den? | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
Er, I'm thinking in the garage. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
Ah, in the garage! That's cool | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
because we've had stuff in the garden, | 0:07:19 | 0:07:21
we've done them in a bedroom... | 0:07:21 | 0:07:23
A basement. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:24
..a basement, but we've never had a garage. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
-This is going to be good. -You happy with this? | 0:07:26 | 0:07:28
-Yep. -Are you ready? -Yep. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:29
Let's get this den done, come on. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:30
Joshua wants his DJ den in the garage, | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
but right now it's packed to the brim with Dad's stuff. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
Time for a Dengineers clearout. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
Aah! | 0:07:46 | 0:07:47 | |
Your dad's got so much stuff! | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
To get this place ready for a den, | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
we're going to need to call in some reinforcements. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
I think we should get Mum and Dad in to help. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
Mum! Dad! We need your help. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
Come on! | 0:08:02 | 0:08:03
How much junk have you got in this garage, Geoff?! | 0:08:06 | 0:08:08
To be honest, he's taken my garage, taken all my space, | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
and he's going to turn it into something that...I've got no idea... | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
It's a little bit scary. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:20
-Yes! -One, two, three, four. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
One, two, three, four. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
The worst thing he could do would be putting some big hole in the roof! | 0:08:24 | 0:08:28
That scares me a little bit. Hey, we'll wait and see. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
After some stellar work from the Dengineers, | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
the garage is cleared and ready to be turned into DJ JJ Josh's den. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:43
For Mum and Dad, this is the last time we'll see this space | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
until the big reveal in just four days' time. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
Give it a wave, go on. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:53
-Give it a showbiz wave. -Bye, garage! | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
Ta-ra. And you guys...can sling your hook. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
-Get gone. You're not allowed to be... -Dengineers only. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
Off you go, if you can pick your way through that. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
-That's a lot of junk that, isn't it? -See you in a bit. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
Thanks for your garage. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
The garage is ready. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:09
Now all Joshua needs is a designer to make his dreams a reality. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:13
Step forward Olga. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
She's a specialist in creating mega-cool dens | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
and can make the smallest of spaces look totally awesome. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
This girl's got all the skills to make this one a chart topper. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
So, Olga, we have an empty garage | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
for you to start working your Dengineers magic in. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
What have you got planned? | 0:09:32 | 0:09:33
Right, so I've seen the images that you've chosen, | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
they gave me loads of amazing ideas. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:37
But first I need to ask you a question. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:39
Would you like a podium kind of thing? | 0:09:39 | 0:09:41
-Yeah. -So like you can see the crowd clapping and dancing? | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
So, we need it raised, basically. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
I love that idea, but... | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
this space is not very high. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:50
What can we do, Olga? | 0:09:50 | 0:09:51
Let's do a hole in the ceiling. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:53
-What?! -Yeah, why not? | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
-You can't just cut a hole in the ceiling! -Yes, you can. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
What do you reckon about having the podium up there? | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
With a hole in the ceiling, how's that sound? | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
It would be awesome because I can see everybody dancing. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:06
It's a Dengineers first - a hole in the ceiling. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
-Love it. -Yeah! That's it. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
So, that's the podium sorted. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:11
What else have you got planned? | 0:10:11 | 0:10:12
Obviously we need to get Joshua up to the podium, | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
so we're going to have colourful stairs, | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
-customised, in your favourite colours. -Yeah. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
And then there's going to be a VIP space underneath. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
VIP space?! | 0:10:22 | 0:10:23
-Yes. -Is that what you imagined? | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
Yeah - well, better! | 0:10:25 | 0:10:27
Better than you imagined, I thought so. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:28
Olga's design for the garage space | 0:10:29 | 0:10:31
has been given the Joshua seal of approval. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34
She plans to cut out a section of the roof | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
to give Joshua a raised DJ podium. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:41
On the ground floor of the den, Olga's designed a dance floor | 0:10:41 | 0:10:44
covered by cool lights | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
and an awesome VIP area were Joshua can kick back between his DJ sets. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:51
It's time for the Dengineers team to get cracking. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:58
And when we come to build a den, we come with a serious amount of kit! | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
-Oh! Oh... -Are you all right? | 0:11:03 | 0:11:05
-You OK? -I thought I was going to drop it then. -We're good. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:07
Can we have another pair of hands around here? | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
Can you just move that towards the little gap there? | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
Push it over. That's it. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:15
And then the next one come in. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:17
The team have well and truly moved in, | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
but, unfortunately, so has the horrible weather. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
But it's going to take more than just a torrential downpour | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
to stop the Dengineers. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
Now, what was it that Mum said would be the worst thing | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
that could happen to the garage? | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
The worst thing he could do | 0:11:37 | 0:11:38
would be putting some big hole in the roof. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:41
'Well, don't worry, Mum, because the first job of the day is...' | 0:11:42 | 0:11:46
It's coming! Yay! | 0:11:46 | 0:11:48
'..well, to put a massive hole in the roof.' | 0:11:48 | 0:11:50
Whoo! Well in! Well in, lads. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
'So maybe do worry a bit, Mum.' | 0:11:53 | 0:11:55
The team spend most of the day | 0:11:58 | 0:11:59
bringing down the ceiling of the garage | 0:11:59 | 0:12:01
so Josh's DJ podium can be constructed. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:05
-Great, isn't it? -Am I DJing up there, or down here? | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
No, you're going to be up there. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:10
The crowd's going to be here, | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
-with their hands up, and you giving us the music. -Cool. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
-How does that sound? -Awesome. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:16
It's been a monumental effort by the Dengineers, | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
but as day one comes to an end, | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
the team aren't quite as far ahead as they'd like. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:26
There's still plenty to do, | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
but that's absolutely fine. We still have three days | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
and we're going to be ready for the reveal - 100%. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
It's day two in Cardiff and the rain clouds have moved on, | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
meaning the Dengineers can get back on track with the build. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:40
Whilst electrician Richard works on making sure that Joshua | 0:12:44 | 0:12:48
has all the power he needs to DJ away... | 0:12:48 | 0:12:50
..the rest of the team start cladding the walls | 0:12:52 | 0:12:54
with the wooden panels. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:55
When it's finished, there'll be enough wooden cladding in this den | 0:12:56 | 0:12:59
to cover half a football pitch. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:01
Lauren. Where's Lauren? | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
Lauren is... How do I say working? | 0:13:07 | 0:13:09
-Work. -Working. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
HORN HONKS | 0:13:13 | 0:13:14
The team's next task is to fit the staircase | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
that will join the two floors. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
This is really important moment now. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
-Magnificent! -They're huge. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:23
This structure has nothing supporting it from underneath, | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
which makes the staircase look like it's floating. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:28
I catch up with Dengineer Gareth | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
to find out the engineering behind this design. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
How does that not snap when you walk up it? | 0:13:35 | 0:13:37
Well, these stairs, Mark, have got three points of contact. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
They are physically fixed at the top, the bottom, | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
and on that side wall - | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45
but what gives these days its strength | 0:13:45 | 0:13:47
is this relatively thin-looking piece of wood here. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
The key pieces of wood in this structure | 0:13:52 | 0:13:54
are the ones on either side of the stairs, called stringers. | 0:13:54 | 0:13:58
It may not look like it, | 0:13:58 | 0:13:59
but these carry the weight of anyone who walks up the stairs, | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
meaning there's no need for any support from underneath... | 0:14:02 | 0:14:05
and they do this job | 0:14:05 | 0:14:06
because of the way they're positioned in the structure. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
Have a go at snapping that one on the flat. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12
Now, think about this, same-sized piece of wood, put it on its edge, | 0:14:14 | 0:14:17
now try and snap that. | 0:14:17 | 0:14:18
You're a big fellow, you're not going to do it. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
It's that depth of the wood that gives the stairs the strength. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:24
-Right. -So these pieces either side are carrying all the weight. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:28
Positioning the wood in this way creates a structure so strong | 0:14:29 | 0:14:33
that it can carry the weight of 20 people stood on the stairs at once. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:36
Wow! Well, Gareth, you're definitely the right man | 0:14:36 | 0:14:38
for the job cos this is incredible. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:40
Yeah, we're pleased with how it's going. Thank you, Mark. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:42
It's been a tough day for the team, | 0:14:44 | 0:14:46
but all their hard work has paid off | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
and the staircase is a massive success. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:51
Time for a Olga to carefully guide Joshua up to check out the new view. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:57
-That's amazing. -Wow. | 0:14:57 | 0:14:59
-That's brilliant! -This is awesome. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:00
The view was amazing. I could just imagine my podium being there | 0:15:00 | 0:15:05
and seeing everybody dancing. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:06
It's going to be awesome. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:08
The den is really starting to take shape, | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
so I think it's time for me and Joshua to leave Cardiff behind | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
for a few hours to get some inspiration for this awesome DJ den. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:19
Joshua, fist-bump me. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:21
Nice to see you. I've brought you here | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
to the BBC's New Broadcasting House in London - | 0:15:23 | 0:15:26
do you have any idea why? | 0:15:26 | 0:15:28
-No. -What if I told you that we're going to take a little tour | 0:15:28 | 0:15:32
around the Radio 1 studios? | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
-Really? -Yeah. Would you like that? | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
-Yeah! -Shall we go for it? -Yeah. -Come on, let's go. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:40
Radio 1 is home to some of the biggest DJs on the planet | 0:15:43 | 0:15:47
and we've only gone and got VIP access to the whole place... | 0:15:47 | 0:15:50
..starting with a welcome from the legend that is Greg James. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
-Are you Josh? -Yeah. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:57
You're an aspiring DJ? | 0:15:57 | 0:15:58
-Yeah. -You're in the right place. Nice to meet you, Josh. I'm Greg. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:02
So, congratulations, welcome to the team. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:04
Right now, Matt Edmondson's show is going out live to millions | 0:16:08 | 0:16:11
of listeners and we're about to gate-crash the party. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:15
Hello! | 0:16:15 | 0:16:16
Hello, Matt Edmondson! | 0:16:16 | 0:16:18
-Hi, Josh, how are you doing? -Good, thanks. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:20
So, are you about to go live any second? | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
We're going to go live in about 45 seconds. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
45 seconds. How exciting is that? | 0:16:25 | 0:16:27
Do you want to run around and have a quick look? | 0:16:27 | 0:16:29
Go on. Go and get your face in there. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:31
When this gets to the green section, | 0:16:31 | 0:16:34
do you want to press that button, "go", there? Yeah? | 0:16:34 | 0:16:37
And that will actually go out on the radio. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:39
So, come and put your finger over it now. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:41
-So, press it now. -What, the red one? | 0:16:41 | 0:16:43
'BBC Radio 1.' | 0:16:43 | 0:16:45
So that was Catfish and the Bottlemen, | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
and this is Iggy, now, and Team. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:50
-Thank you very much, Josh. Good work. -You did it! | 0:16:50 | 0:16:52
-How good was that? -Go Josh! | 0:16:52 | 0:16:54
You made something actually happen on Radio 1! | 0:16:54 | 0:16:56
You can put on your business card, Radio 1 DJ, now, | 0:16:56 | 0:16:59
cos that isn't a lie! | 0:16:59 | 0:17:01
This VIP access is brilliant. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:05
But if Josh wants to become a superstar DJ one day, | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
he's going to need to learn some tricks from the pros, | 0:17:08 | 0:17:11
so we've enlisted the help of Radio 1 legend and Joshua's favourite DJ, | 0:17:11 | 0:17:15
Annie Mac, to give him a mixing masterclass. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:19
-Hi, Joshua! -Hiya. -I'm Annie. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:23
-Hiya. -Nice to meet you. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:25
Come on in. How's it going? | 0:17:25 | 0:17:26
Good. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:27 | |
Annie Mac is one of Radio 1's top DJs | 0:17:28 | 0:17:31
and her show gets over one million listeners every week, | 0:17:31 | 0:17:35
so who better to teach him some pro moves? | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
Here you have your speed, | 0:17:39 | 0:17:40
-so this is called BPM. -Yeah. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:42
The beats per minute. So that's 124.8 | 0:17:42 | 0:17:44
and we want to make this the same speed. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
-OK. -What's that saying now? -125.4. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:49
So we want to make it 124.8. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:51
So push that upwards slowly and you'll get to 124.8. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:56
There you go. So now you've got the same speeds. | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
Now you have to press the start of this, when there's a beat on here. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:02
-BEAT PLAYS THROUGH HEADPHONES -So you have to count. | 0:18:02 | 0:18:04
Two, three, four, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:09
SHE MIXES NEXT BEAT IN | 0:18:09 | 0:18:11
-Yeah! -Yeah! | 0:18:11 | 0:18:13
That's it. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:15
And then this one counts out the time for you. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
It's really easy. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:18
One, two, three, four... | 0:18:18 | 0:18:21
-Amazing! -Yeah! | 0:18:21 | 0:18:22
'This has been the best day of my life.' | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
I've just met Annie Mac and got to DJ with her. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
Ideally, you'll mix at the end of the record, | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
so you'll wait until the last, kind of, 10 or 20 seconds. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
I never thought this was going to happen. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:35
And then bring this fader down... | 0:18:35 | 0:18:37
Yes! | 0:18:40 | 0:18:41 | |
DJ! | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44 | |
-DJ in the place! -Amazing. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
Whoo! | 0:18:47 | 0:18:48 | |
Yes, Joshua. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:50
-Did you enjoy that, Josh? -Yeah. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:52
So, Annie, what do you think of Josh's skills? | 0:18:52 | 0:18:54
I think he's got it. I think you've got what it takes to be a DJ. | 0:18:54 | 0:18:57
The most and important thing is about having the passion, | 0:18:57 | 0:18:59
and having the commitment, and just wanting to do it all the time, | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
and, like anything, the more you do it, the better you're going to get. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
-Annie, thank you so much... -My absolute pleasure. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:07
..for letting us come and see you and teaching us all the tricks. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:09
-I can't wait to see the finished den, to be honest. -Yeah. -I want one! | 0:19:09 | 0:19:12
It's day three of the build | 0:19:16 | 0:19:17
and the Dengineers team have got loads to do | 0:19:17 | 0:19:20
to get this den finished in time for the big reveal tomorrow. | 0:19:20 | 0:19:23
A fast start is crucial today, | 0:19:26 | 0:19:29
and that means all hands to the pump. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:31
Joshua won't see the den until the big reveal tomorrow, | 0:19:31 | 0:19:35
but that doesn't mean his work is done... | 0:19:35 | 0:19:37
Because Olga needs both his and brother Owen's help | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
with the upcycle. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:41
-One for you. -Thank you. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:47
One for you. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:48
For this upcycle, Olga is taking an antique-style frame | 0:19:48 | 0:19:52
and plans to turn it into a cool gig poster | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
to go on the wall of Joshua's Den. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
First up, Joshua and Owen paint the frame blue | 0:19:57 | 0:19:59
to fit in with the colour scheme of the den. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:01
That's it! Brilliant! | 0:20:02 | 0:20:03
Lovely coverage. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:06
Then, whilst the frame dries, | 0:20:06 | 0:20:07
Olga, Joshua and Owen wrap a piece of wood in a special material | 0:20:07 | 0:20:11
which will allow Joshua to write on his gigs, | 0:20:11 | 0:20:14
and then wipe it clean afterwards. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:16
-Shall we see if it works? -Yeah. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
That's lovely. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
-Rub it out, then. -Yeah! | 0:20:21 | 0:20:23
The next time Joshua will see his gig board, | 0:20:23 | 0:20:25
it will be complete with personalised logos | 0:20:25 | 0:20:28
and will be on the wall of his den. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:29
The team have been working flat out all day, | 0:20:34 | 0:20:36
so it's time for them to down tools and take over Joshua's living room | 0:20:36 | 0:20:40
for a lunchtime treat of fish and chips. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:43
And whilst the Dengineers take on board some much-needed energy, | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
I catch up with Joshua's mum and dad | 0:20:46 | 0:20:48
to find out why this den is so important for DJ JJ Josh. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:52
What will this mean to Joshua? | 0:20:52 | 0:20:54
How important is this for him? | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
This is going to be massively important for Joshua. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
Him and Owen are really good friends, | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
Owen follows him around all the time, | 0:21:02 | 0:21:04
but there comes a point when Joshua wants some time on his own | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
and he doesn't get any of that, | 0:21:06 | 0:21:08
so having this DJ den is going to give him the time alone he needs. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:10
And, for us, we kind of forget how patient he is with Owen. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:14
He's 11 years old - | 0:21:14 | 0:21:16
he does a lot more for his brother than most do. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
What does Owen struggle with that Joshua needs to be there for him? | 0:21:19 | 0:21:22
He struggles with communication | 0:21:22 | 0:21:24
because his speech is still so much delayed. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
He does a lot of Makaton signing | 0:21:27 | 0:21:29
and Joshua converses with him in that way a lot, | 0:21:29 | 0:21:32
so they've got that bond. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:34
Is this going to mean a lot to Owen, as well? | 0:21:34 | 0:21:36
-Do you reckon he's going to love it? -Oh, definitely! | 0:21:36 | 0:21:38
I'm sure that he'll spend many hours in there when Joshua allows him. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:43
-Yeah! -Pretending that he's the man and... | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
-He's the Calvin Harris! -Yeah! | 0:21:46 | 0:21:47
Yeah, exactly. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:48
The pressure to get the den done is rising. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:56
So you just have to go left... | 0:21:56 | 0:21:58
-Go left. -..and then up. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:01
I'm feeling really excited about the big reveal. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
I can't wait to see the finished den and have my first party. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:09
For the team to have any hope of getting the den finished in time | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
for Joshua's big reveal party, | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
they're going to have to work late into the night. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:19
Today's been a very hard day for everybody, | 0:22:20 | 0:22:23
but we're not giving up. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:24
I'm slightly worried, but, that the end of the day, | 0:22:24 | 0:22:27
I kind of have a feeling | 0:22:27 | 0:22:28
that everything's going to end up very well. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:30
It's day four and, despite working late into the night, | 0:22:34 | 0:22:37
Olga and the team are facing a race against time | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
to get the den finished. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:42
Come on, what needs doing? | 0:22:42 | 0:22:43
I feel like it's going to be all hands on deck right now. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
So we need to organise the VIP area. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:47
OK. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:48 | |
Me and Lols help Olga | 0:22:50 | 0:22:52
attach Joshua's speaker graphics to the wall... | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
That's it. Perfect. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:55
..before moving on to set up his VIP area. | 0:22:57 | 0:22:59
I'll pull, you pull that. Hah! Go! | 0:22:59 | 0:23:03
Go... Yes! | 0:23:03 | 0:23:04
But with the big reveal a matter of hours away, | 0:23:04 | 0:23:07
the pressure is really on to get this den done. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:09
Joshua's friends and family have arrived at the house | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
and, despite work still being done on the den, | 0:23:16 | 0:23:18
