On today's show we're going to be surprising a budding superstar DJ

by giving him his very own awesome den.

And we're going to be doing the surprise right here at his house.

Wikka-wikka, yeah! Make some noise!

That's exactly why you will never be a superstar DJ.

-Come on.

-What?!

Today's Dengineer is 11-year-old Joshua from Cardiff.

I need help from the Dengineers

because I'm really passionate about my music

and I really want to be a DJ one day.

This budding DJ loves to play his music...

and play it loud.

Joshua's family parties are really funky.

He plays for his audience,

and they're really cool and hip,

and we love him.

DJ Joshua is a hit with all the family,

but his biggest fan is his brother Owen.

Owen has Down's syndrome, which means he has a learning difficulty.

Joshua spends a lot of time with Owen.

Owen is like his shadow.

Whenever Joshua goes to his bedroom to play on his computer,

Owen follows.

Whenever Joshua starts DJing, Owen follows.

These brothers are mega close.

And even though they're in different classes school...

-ALL:

-Hello, sut wyt ti?

Owen, here, still manages to hang out with his big bro.

The class absolutely love Owen's visits.

Whenever he happens to be passing our room,

he'll pop in and have a little word with us.

Big dot.

One big dot.

I think they're really close

because they're always high-fiving each other...

and they're always hugging.

It's really nice.

I think Joshua deserves this den because we have to do things

slightly differently as a family,

and it would be great for him to have time alone in the den

to be able to practise for something

that he's dreamt of doing for a long time.

Please, Dengineers, I really need your help.

Don't you worry, Joshua,

our help is exactly what you're going to get.

You just don't know it yet!

Joshua's school day is nearly over,

which means we've got not a lot of time to get loads done,

to get this house ready for the big surprise.

We need to get our skates on,

rigging the house with our super secret cameras.

For this hit, we've brought our very own Dengineers Mobile disco

to add some DJ style to the surprise.

I've got the perfect tune, absolute floor filler.

-We've heard that you love to DJ, is that right?

-Yeah.

We've also heard that you need somewhere to practise your skills.

-Yeah.

-So what if we told you that you're going to come away with us

to build your very own dream den?

How does that sound?

-That's cool.

-Really cool, isn't it?!

I'm very excited about getting my den built

because it means I can have some space to practise on my own,

and it's very, very, very exciting.

I've got no idea what's going to happen, I'm very nervous.

And I say, "Bring it on!"

I'm looking forward to seeing what he designs, what he creates,

and having fun with it all.

We have got so much work to do to get this den finished,

and exactly how you want it to be -

but I think it's only right we play one more tune

-and have a little boogie before we go, shall we?

-Yeah.

Our first port of call is the Dengineers mobile HQ,

which has some mega-cool technology to get this den rolling.

Right, Josh - or should I call you DJ...?

this is for you to have the power to show us exactly what you want

-in your den.

-These are your ideas,

so I want you to get in there on that mahoosive screen

and pick out the stuff you like.

Now, the first party is obviously going to involve...

-Family and friends.

Well, this is a picture of my family.

Are you really close to your little brother?

Well, because he's got Down's syndrome,

-if he wants something then I do it for him.

Joshua has decided on a DJ podium with loads of booming speakers

and laser lights to create an awesome atmosphere

to party with his pals.

So, where are we thinking of having the den?

Er, I'm thinking in the garage.

Ah, in the garage! That's cool

because we've had stuff in the garden,

we've done them in a bedroom...

A basement.

..a basement, but we've never had a garage.

-This is going to be good.

-You happy with this?

Joshua wants his DJ den in the garage,

but right now it's packed to the brim with Dad's stuff.

Time for a Dengineers clearout.

Aah!

Your dad's got so much stuff!

To get this place ready for a den,

we're going to need to call in some reinforcements.

I think we should get Mum and Dad in to help.

Mum! Dad! We need your help.

Come on!

How much junk have you got in this garage, Geoff?!

To be honest, he's taken my garage, taken all my space,

and he's going to turn it into something that...I've got no idea...

It's a little bit scary.

-Yes!

The worst thing he could do would be putting some big hole in the roof!

That scares me a little bit. Hey, we'll wait and see.

After some stellar work from the Dengineers,

the garage is cleared and ready to be turned into DJ JJ Josh's den.

For Mum and Dad, this is the last time we'll see this space

until the big reveal in just four days' time.

The garage is ready.

Now all Joshua needs is a designer to make his dreams a reality.

Step forward Olga.

She's a specialist in creating mega-cool dens

and can make the smallest of spaces look totally awesome.

This girl's got all the skills to make this one a chart topper.

So, Olga, we have an empty garage

for you to start working your Dengineers magic in.

What have you got planned?

Right, so I've seen the images that you've chosen,

they gave me loads of amazing ideas.

But first I need to ask you a question.

Would you like a podium kind of thing?

-Yeah.

-So like you can see the crowd clapping and dancing?

So, we need it raised, basically.

I love that idea, but...

this space is not very high.

What can we do, Olga?

Let's do a hole in the ceiling.

-What?!

-Yeah, why not?

-You can't just cut a hole in the ceiling!

-Yes, you can.

What do you reckon about having the podium up there?

With a hole in the ceiling, how's that sound?

It would be awesome because I can see everybody dancing.

It's a Dengineers first - a hole in the ceiling.

-Love it.

-Yeah! That's it.

So, that's the podium sorted.

What else have you got planned?

Obviously we need to get Joshua up to the podium,

so we're going to have colourful stairs,

-customised, in your favourite colours.

-Yeah.

And then there's going to be a VIP space underneath.

VIP space?!

-Yes.

-Is that what you imagined?

Yeah - well, better!

Better than you imagined, I thought so.

Olga's design for the garage space

has been given the Joshua seal of approval.

She plans to cut out a section of the roof

to give Joshua a raised DJ podium.

On the ground floor of the den, Olga's designed a dance floor

covered by cool lights

and an awesome VIP area were Joshua can kick back between his DJ sets.

It's time for the Dengineers team to get cracking.

And when we come to build a den, we come with a serious amount of kit!

-Oh! Oh...

-Are you all right?

-You OK?

-I thought I was going to drop it then.

-We're good.

Can we have another pair of hands around here?

Can you just move that towards the little gap there?

Push it over. That's it.

And then the next one come in.

The team have well and truly moved in,

but, unfortunately, so has the horrible weather.

But it's going to take more than just a torrential downpour

to stop the Dengineers.

Now, what was it that Mum said would be the worst thing

that could happen to the garage?

The worst thing he could do

would be putting some big hole in the roof.

'Well, don't worry, Mum, because the first job of the day is...'

It's coming! Yay!

'..well, to put a massive hole in the roof.'

Whoo! Well in! Well in, lads.

'So maybe do worry a bit, Mum.'

The team spend most of the day

bringing down the ceiling of the garage

so Josh's DJ podium can be constructed.

-Great, isn't it?

-Am I DJing up there, or down here?

No, you're going to be up there.

The crowd's going to be here,

-with their hands up, and you giving us the music.

-Cool.

-How does that sound?

-Awesome.

It's been a monumental effort by the Dengineers,

but as day one comes to an end,

the team aren't quite as far ahead as they'd like.

There's still plenty to do,

but that's absolutely fine. We still have three days

and we're going to be ready for the reveal - 100%.

It's day two in Cardiff and the rain clouds have moved on,

meaning the Dengineers can get back on track with the build.

Whilst electrician Richard works on making sure that Joshua

has all the power he needs to DJ away...

..the rest of the team start cladding the walls

with the wooden panels.

When it's finished, there'll be enough wooden cladding in this den

to cover half a football pitch.

Lauren. Where's Lauren?

Lauren is... How do I say working?

-Work.

-Working.

The team's next task is to fit the staircase

that will join the two floors.

This is really important moment now.

-Magnificent!

-They're huge.

This structure has nothing supporting it from underneath,

which makes the staircase look like it's floating.

I catch up with Dengineer Gareth

to find out the engineering behind this design.

How does that not snap when you walk up it?

Well, these stairs, Mark, have got three points of contact.

They are physically fixed at the top, the bottom,

and on that side wall -

but what gives these days its strength

is this relatively thin-looking piece of wood here.

The key pieces of wood in this structure

are the ones on either side of the stairs, called stringers.

It may not look like it,

but these carry the weight of anyone who walks up the stairs,

meaning there's no need for any support from underneath...

and they do this job

because of the way they're positioned in the structure.

Have a go at snapping that one on the flat.

Now, think about this, same-sized piece of wood, put it on its edge,

now try and snap that.

You're a big fellow, you're not going to do it.

It's that depth of the wood that gives the stairs the strength.

-Right.

-So these pieces either side are carrying all the weight.

Positioning the wood in this way creates a structure so strong

that it can carry the weight of 20 people stood on the stairs at once.

Wow! Well, Gareth, you're definitely the right man

for the job cos this is incredible.

Yeah, we're pleased with how it's going. Thank you, Mark.

It's been a tough day for the team,

but all their hard work has paid off

and the staircase is a massive success.

Time for a Olga to carefully guide Joshua up to check out the new view.

-That's amazing.

and seeing everybody dancing.

The den is really starting to take shape,

so I think it's time for me and Joshua to leave Cardiff behind

for a few hours to get some inspiration for this awesome DJ den.

It's day three of the build

and the Dengineers team have got loads to do

to get this den finished in time for the big reveal tomorrow.

A fast start is crucial today,

and that means all hands to the pump.

Joshua won't see the den until the big reveal tomorrow,

but that doesn't mean his work is done...

Because Olga needs both his and brother Owen's help

with the upcycle.

-One for you.

-Thank you.

One for you.

For this upcycle, Olga is taking an antique-style frame

and plans to turn it into a cool gig poster

to go on the wall of Joshua's Den.

First up, Joshua and Owen paint the frame blue

to fit in with the colour scheme of the den.

That's it! Brilliant!

Lovely coverage.

Then, whilst the frame dries,

Olga, Joshua and Owen wrap a piece of wood in a special material

which will allow Joshua to write on his gigs,

and then wipe it clean afterwards.

-Shall we see if it works?

-Yeah.

That's lovely.

-Rub it out, then.

-Yeah!

The next time Joshua will see his gig board,

it will be complete with personalised logos

and will be on the wall of his den.

The team have been working flat out all day,

so it's time for them to down tools and take over Joshua's living room

for a lunchtime treat of fish and chips.

And whilst the Dengineers take on board some much-needed energy,

I catch up with Joshua's mum and dad

to find out why this den is so important for DJ JJ Josh.

What will this mean to Joshua?

How important is this for him?

This is going to be massively important for Joshua.

Him and Owen are really good friends,

Owen follows him around all the time,

but there comes a point when Joshua wants some time on his own

and he doesn't get any of that,

so having this DJ den is going to give him the time alone he needs.

And, for us, we kind of forget how patient he is with Owen.

He's 11 years old -

he does a lot more for his brother than most do.

What does Owen struggle with that Joshua needs to be there for him?

He struggles with communication

because his speech is still so much delayed.

He does a lot of Makaton signing

and Joshua converses with him in that way a lot,

so they've got that bond.

Is this going to mean a lot to Owen, as well?

-Do you reckon he's going to love it?

-Oh, definitely!

I'm sure that he'll spend many hours in there when Joshua allows him.

-Yeah!

-Pretending that he's the man and...

-He's the Calvin Harris!

-Yeah!

Yeah, exactly.

The pressure to get the den done is rising.

So you just have to go left...

-Go left.

-..and then up.

I'm feeling really excited about the big reveal.

I can't wait to see the finished den and have my first party.

For the team to have any hope of getting the den finished in time

for Joshua's big reveal party,

they're going to have to work late into the night.

Today's been a very hard day for everybody,

but we're not giving up.

I'm slightly worried, but, that the end of the day,

I kind of have a feeling

that everything's going to end up very well.

It's day four and, despite working late into the night,

Olga and the team are facing a race against time

to get the den finished.

Come on, what needs doing?

I feel like it's going to be all hands on deck right now.

So we need to organise the VIP area.

OK.

Me and Lols help Olga

attach Joshua's speaker graphics to the wall...

That's it. Perfect.

..before moving on to set up his VIP area.

I'll pull, you pull that. Hah! Go!

But with the big reveal a matter of hours away,

the pressure is really on to get this den done.

Joshua's friends and family have arrived at the house

and, despite work still being done on the den,

the team have no choice but to set for the big reveal.

I'm feeling really nervous and excited at the same time.

It's nice having all my family and friends here

to share the excitement with me.

The Dengineers make one final push for the finish line...

..and, after a monumental effort,

Joshua's den is complete.

This garage used to be a place that was only good for Dad's tools.

But Olga and her team of dedicated Dengineers have transformed it

into an awesome space fit for the most professional of superstar DJs.

But what will DJ JJ Josh and his friends and family

think of the new Den?
