Is it OK if I step out early?
Emily doesn't really know my situation.
I have a job because it's the only way I can afford dance.
There's just something I gotta do.
If I miss one more shift, I'll be fired.
I was starting to feel like she's starting to finally like me.
Honestly, I'm just having a blast with him right now.
I kind of saw his soft side for the first time.
Check it out, Riley's holding my hand!
Do you want, um...
This is literally the weirdest date I've ever been on.
Why can't she just see me for who I am?
Michelle is this close to leaving.
All she needs is a little push and she's outta here.
She's gone way too far this time.
We've decided to replace her as dance captain.
Emily already hates me.
If I try to take over as dance captain
what is she going to do to me?
I have no idea what we're going to do now.
My dad couldn't take me to dance today.
So I decided to take the bus.
I'm on my way to work. I have a part-time job.
Just taking a few shifts here and there because I pay for dance.
When I see Michelle get on the bus I'm really nervous because
I don't want her to see me in my uniform.
Oh, um... Hey, Michelle. I didn't see you there.
I'll come sit beside you.
Chloe's here too. What a weird coincidence.
And she's wearing some really weird...costume?
What's with the...dress?
-I have a job.
Well, you know, A-Troupe is really expensive
and the only way I can afford to be a part of it is if I have a job.
That's cool. Chloe telling me that she has a job is,
you know, not that big of a surprise for me.
I know people our age that have jobs.
But, um...don't tell anyone.
I wouldn't, but why not?
Well, nobody in A-Troupe would really understand
and you know how it is with Emily.
I mean, it's either dance or nothing.
So, let's just keep it our little secret.
As long as you give me half your tips then OK.
You've gotta be kidding me!
Of course I'm kidding!
I would never say something like that.
I think I do trust Michelle to keep my secret.
She's been a good friend since she's gotten here so I do trust her.
Chloe doesn't want me to tell anyone about her job.
So, I'm not going to tell anyone.
# We, we're gonna show the world
# Everything we're made of
# We're gonna tear the roof off this place... #
Dancers, listen up!
Cheques are due for costumes at the end of this week.
The dancers, as part of A-Troupe,
have to pay for their own costumes for regionals.
I feel really bad for Chloe with her financial issues.
I know that she can't afford it.
My dad lost his job a few months ago so now it's my responsibility.
If I want to dance, I have to pay for it.
-If anyone forgets, remind them.
Emily's going to lead you in warm-ups.
I'm worried that Emily's going to get mad at her,
and Kate's going to kick her out of A-Troupe.
I can't help looking at Chloe
because I know for a fact she hasn't paid.
In dance, you dot your i's, you cross your t's, and you pay on time.
West, I need you to move over, please.
-Riley, you step forward...
-Oh, hey, Emily? Your shoe's untied.
All right, James, can you...
A part of me wants to laugh, a part of me wants to disinfect my shoe.
If I do something like tying her shoe, I thought maybe
she would think that was really romantic.
No, no. That's weird. OK...thanks(!)
It doesn't seem to be working.
OK. Let's take it from the ball-chain step.
5, 6, 7, go.
I hope the dancers can stay focused
because the auditions for the solo for regionals are tomorrow.
Every year one dancer from the Next Step gets
featured in a regionals dance competition.
It's a huge deal.
I really want the solo because at regionals
there will be scouts from all over the dance world.
If they like what they see, that'll be one step closer for me
becoming a professional dancer.
Chloe, this isn't cheerleading! Give me some dance.
She is not present.
She's missing steps. She's out of her spacing.
I don't really know what's going on with her.
All right. Let's stop.
-Chloe, do you know the timing?
-Are you sure?
Tiff, can you show her the timing, on your backline part, please?
Everyone else knows the moves. Why don't you know the moves?
There's no excuse.
I'm missing steps during rehearsal because I'm just a little
unfocused because I know I have to start paying for costumes.
I wish she knew what I was going through
and I wish that I could tell her.
This isn't B-Troupe, OK? A little more intensity.
Joining A-Troupe was a huge commitment.
I didn't really realise how much money and time
and effort it would take to be part of it.
I'm really having trouble balancing everything.
-Can I talk to you?
-Is everything OK?
-Yeah, everything's fine.
I've just been working a lot. So it's hard to keep up.
I know that she's struggling
and I saw the way that she was dancing in class.
You should maybe think about going back to B-Troupe
-if this is too much for you.
A-Troupe is where I want to be, I just didn't know it was going
to be this expensive with all of the costumes and competitions and stuff.
Well, what about if I help you?
If you miss a dance practice I can teach you the routine.
-You want to help me?
-Of course! Why not? OK.
That would be really awesome.
When I overhear Michelle talking to Chloe
I have my mind now set on making her dance captain.
-We really need to re-approach her.
-Thank you for offering your help.
What Michelle does is she actually tries to help her with her
situation instead of just putting her down.
That showed us just another quality of why she'd be such a better
dance captain than Emily.
Getting the solo would be amazing, you know?
I'm new to A-Troupe and I really just want to make my mark.
West and I are at the studio after hours
because we're working on our solo audition piece.
-Wow. That was good.
-It was, it was, wasn't it?
Yeah, well, if you want that solo
you know you're going to have to work hard, right?
-Remember I've got magic feet.
I don't really have magic feet but Daniel doesn't know that
so I really think that's going to intimidate him.
All right, I'm going to head home so...do you want a ride?
-No, that's OK.
-I'm going to practise.
-All right. Cool. Oh!
Remember, go big or go home.
It's kind of spurring on my fire. I'm going to work that much harder
because I want that soloist position.
-OK, so we just need to rehearse Emily's piece?
I'm having such a problem remembering the steps. It's OK.
We'll go over it.
If I was dance captain and I knew about Chloe's money issues
I would rehearse with her if she missed a class.
That's what any dance captain should do.
I thought it was really sweet of Michelle to help me
because no-one else would do that for me.
-OK. 7, 8...
-OK. Chloe? Come here.
-Why don't you just tell Emily about your situation?
-Are you kidding me?
-I can't tell Emily what I'm doing.
-Well, what about Kate?
-She has to understand.
Do you know how many people want to be in A-Troupe?
Giselle's waiting at the door to be in this group.
-Why don't I just cover for you?
-I don't know.
You're already on Emily's bad side.
No. I'm covering for you. I don't care. It's fine.
-Thank you so much.
-Of course, no problem.
-OK. Let's get back to this.
-I'm so lost!
So we start 5, 6, 7, and 1, 2, 3, 4,
5, 6, 7, 8...
Oh, hey, guys!
-Oh, hey, Michelle!
-Do you think now is a good time?
-Yeah. How long have you been sitting there?
-Uh...like 15 minutes.
-15 minutes! Wow, we didn't even see you.
-So, uh... Yeah, we saw you with Chloe.
We overheard you - you were going to help her with the moves.
I'm worried because I don't want them to know Chloe's secret.
That was awfully, um... leader-ish of you.
Guys, I'm just trying to be kind.
Kindness is a great skill to have as a dance captain.
I don't want to be dance captain and they have to understand that.
You have to at least think about it seriously.
-Yeah, I did.
-You have to believe in yourself.
-I do believe in myself.
I just... Things have just settled down.
Things never settle down completely with my sister.
-You know you're the right choice.
-You would be perfect for it.
-You have to replace her now before things get worse.
Can you please consider it? For real.
-Hey, just think about it, all right?
I believe in Michelle.
We're hoping Michelle realises that and is ready to step up.
Eldon, could you put my bag in my cubby?
-Yeah. After you.
After that tying my shoe thing,
I wanted to see how far I could push him.
-He's been carrying my bag all day.
-What is happening right now?
-It's been like this all day.
I think Emily and Eldon have a weird relationship
because I think it's only in Eldon's head.
Right now we're warming up for solo auditions
and I'm a little worried because Chloe's not here yet.
Getting the solo is a huge deal. So yeah, I really want it.
This is it. I have to give it my all today.
I have to beat West and his "magic feet".
Here we go, dancers. Everyone together.
Time for auditions.
The solos are for our routine for regionals.
So every dancer comes in prepared and I and Kate evaluate you.
West, you're up first. Here we go.
R&B MUSIC PLAYS
West is one of the craziest,
most unique dancers I've probably ever seen.
He's super lacking in technique but
he makes up with it with his heart.
-Good luck trying to beat that.
-You and your magic feet watch this.
Looks like we have Daniel up next. Here we go.
DANCE MUSIC PLAYS
Daniel's solo, pretty phenomenal.
He's so incredibly technically strong.
But the main thing he needs to work on is just a bit more of a heart.
-Man, he's unreal.
-I feel just a rush of anger, adrenaline and drive.
I just landed badly on my ankle but I'm just going to walk it off
and hope for the best. I hope it's not too serious.
When I notice Daniel limping, I know something is wrong.
I'm not sure how big of an injury it is or
if it's an injury at all but I know something went wrong there.
Then we have James.
I want to show that I'm not just break-dancing and flipping.
I want to show some technique too.
That's how I'm going to get the solo.
I want this solo so bad I can taste it.
Next up on my list we have Chloe.
Oh, uh...she's... at a doctor's appointment.
Chloe being late again is disgraceful.
I don't know how she was in B-Troupe,
but this isn't going to fly.
-She'll be here like any minute.
-OK, we can't really wait for her.
Um...let me go call her. I'll call her and see where she is.
OK. Go quick. Let's just skip ahead to Tiffany then. Here we go.
-I volunteered to call Chloe because I know her situation.
Hey, Chloe. Look, you have to hurry up
because Emily's catching on to you.
This is just so unfair. I love dance. It's just so unfair.
OK. My shift finishes in 15 minutes. I can probably get there in an hour.
OK. See you in an hour.
I'm freaking out inside.
What am I going to do?
She'll be here any minute.
I hope so cos otherwise she's going to miss her chance.
I feel bad for her because she's missing out on a huge opportunity.
Chloe being late is a big problem.
Maybe it's time for her to head back to B-Troupe.
Chloe's still not here?
-She'll be here in five minutes.
She missed the whole solo audition.
-Yeah, but I said five minutes.
-Still missed the whole thing.
Listen, Emily's right. She didn't show up for her solo audition.
I can't wait for her to leisurely show up at her own time.
I'm freaking out inside.
I have decided who is going to be awarded the solo feature.
The dancer is going to be...
I'm super excited that I got the solo and I'm going to work so hard
to make sure that my solo is the best so that we can win at regionals.
I guess Daniel's feet are more magical than mine,
although, I don't have any magic in my feet.
So even if he had a little bit of magic in his feet
they would still be more magical than mine.
And, James, you came in second, you will be Daniel's understudy.
-So make sure you learn the routine as well.
Oh, come on in, guys! It kind of worries me a little bit
because I do not have the same feet or flexibility as Daniel
but, you know, if I ever had to I'd just add my own swag to it.
Chloe! How nice of you to join us.
When Chloe shows up it's actually kind of surprising.
The solos are over. It's just kind of embarrassing for her.
Why wouldn't she just stay home? You missed the solo auditions.
-I'm sorry. I was doing stuff...
I'm not sure if you're aware, but this is A-Troupe!
Miss Kate wouldn't have put me here if I couldn't do it.
She wouldn't put you here if she knew you were going to be late.
I don't know how she could do this to me because I thought
we were friends and were closer than that.
-I don't have time for someone who's not here.
-I deserve to be here.
-I think you deserve to be in B-Troupe.
It's a sick feeling knowing that someone can't dance
because they don't have enough money.
Everyone should have the right to dance.
You don't have to be so mean!
She missed the auditions - it's not that big of a deal.
It's not just the auditions, Michelle.
She comes late, she leaves early, she's not dedicated.
This is A-Troupe.
She's being so mean to her and no-one deserves to be treated that way.
This is the moment where things are finally going to change.
This is the beginning of a revolution.
Do you know all of the facts about Chloe?
-Do you know what's going on in her life?
-No. Do you?
Cos if you do, how about you tell everyone?
Yeah. That's what I thought.
Then all of a sudden, my sister unloads on her and Michelle caves.
I can't do anything.
But I'm not going to stand here and watch you girls be bullies.
She did not just quit the studio,
because she is our one chance at winning at regionals.
I'm hoping that she leaves A-Troupe because she's basically
tearing apart our team.
If Michelle weren't here right now it would be Giselle.
And honestly, that's exactly what I planned.
I'm sitting here and I'm icing my foot
and it turns out my injury's worse than I thought it was.
But I can't let anyone know or else I'll get pulled out of the solo.
-Long day today.
-You know, congratulations on your solo.
-Really good job, man.
-Thanks, yours was great too.
I hope you appreciate how much I motivated you.
-Like you said, go big or go home, right?
-You got it.
-Hey, man...is your ankle all right?
-Yeah. Oh, yeah.
-Totally fine. Yeah.
-All right. Cool.
-I'll catch you later.
-All right. Take it easy.
I'm sure my ankle will heal up and I'm just going to keep
it on the down low for a while.
-Michelle left the studio.
-OK, but we still don't know that for sure.
She picked up her bags and left.
-If she left, our whole plan has gone to shreds.
-Like there's not even a...
Do you still want me to be dance captain?
When Michelle finally tells us she's ready to become dance
captain it's just like... Boo yah!
-I'm sick of Emily's attitude.
It's time for someone to step in and be a true leader.
