A New Regime The Next Step

After we lost regionals, Miss Kate promised us big changes.

This new studio is just the beginning.

So clean and pretty.

Studio One is a fresh and inspiring space.

It's exactly what we need to get TNS back on top.

It's been eight months since we lost and now we're getting ready for

regionals all over again.

Today is A-Troupe auditions and no-one's spot is safe.

So many people decided to move on after we lost regionals.

No more Cassie.

No more Alfie.

Big changes.

I never thought the studio would be the same.

Seeing people from B-troupe and even dancers

from other studios audition, I think we'll be OK.

So have you heard anything about who the new studio head will be?

I haven't heard anything.

Riley stepped down and decided to go to business school instead.

And I honestly think that's a very good choice for her.

It'll be really interesting to see who's going to take over this huge job.

-What's your style?

-I usually do a lot of waves, ticks,

you know, do a little solo.

-Ah, so you've got that popping going on?

-Yeah.

I just moved here from the country.

And to be honest, I've never seen so many great dancers in one place.

Making A-Troupe isn't going to be easy.

Coming into this new space is great.

I mean I'm returning to The Next Step for another season.

It's awesome.

I just feel so different though, without the old A-Troupe,

without my old friends.

It'll take some getting used to.

Guess who's back.

Miss Kate put me in charge of the studio because

of how poorly The Next Step performed last year.

I'm here to get the studio into shape and return

us to our former glory.

-I think Emily will make a great studio head.

Last year, she came in right when we needed her and saved the day, so,

when we have her the entire year, we'll definitely be unstoppable.

I have one more big announcement to make.

I've also gone ahead and hired the best choreographer in the business.

Hi, everyone.

Welcome to the A-Troupe auditions.

Being head choreographer of The Next Step is surreal.

It kind of feels like I have totally come full circle from when I first

made it into A-Troupe.

We plan to have the best A-Troupe

The Next Step has ever seen.

I'm in disbelief

that Emily is the new studio head.

We used to be on the same team.

And now I have to answer to her?

I don't know.

This is way too much for me to handle.

You're looking better from the last time I saw you.

Man, I actually met this girl at these ballet workshops I was doing.

-OK.

-I really like her but we're not dating or anything.

But she might be coming to the auditions today.

-Awesome.

-And hey, who knows? If we're on the same team.

It's kind of awkward because we haven't spoken in years.

And that's just ridiculous because that's my ex-girlfriend and I know

nothing good can come out of this.

I decided to not audition for A-Troupe this year

because I got this really great offer to assist Luther Brown,

which was always my dream,

so I for sure, for sure, want to do that instead.

I'm just, just bummed that you're

-not going to be dancing with me this year.

I really think it's cool that Sloane came to the audition

to support me. I really just think she's the greatest girlfriend

The Next Step has always been about being yourself,

being unique and with Emily being the head,

I feel we're all just going to become robots.

So, what do you think of the new studio?

I think it's great.

I know, right?

I mean, it just screams perfect, exclusive, professional.

This studio is nice but it's weird not being in Studio A.

She doesn't seem that excited and I need her to be a really important

member of this team. You know, Michelle,

I am really excited to have you on the troupe this year.

I think you were very under-utilised last year and I'm really ready to

change that. I want to make you the star of our team.

We are not going to win with break dancers or hip-hop dancers or

J-Troupers like Ozzy.

They just don't have the technique.

It's so unfair. She didn't even let me dance.

She didn't even let me show what I've got.

This isn't The Next Step that I know any more.

It's always been a thing of The Next Step that everyone gets a chance to

audition, whether if you do hip-hop dancing,

ballet dancing, jazz dancing,

it doesn't matter. We're all on the same level.

The Next Step is changing and I don't know how I feel about it.

OK. We're going to begin. We'll start with a freestyle solo.

We're looking for creativity, versatility

but above all, technique.

That's really important to us.

Let's get started. Everyone clear off.

I'm excited to see how the dancers are going to do,

but I'm also a little bit nervous.

I'm only going to choose the best,

so I really hope that's what I'm going to see.

Group one. Can we have Noah, Jacquie, Henry, Tyler and Danielle?

I've got to make sure that I go as hard as I possibly can to prove that

I was right to be on A-Troupe and

I'm right to be on A-Troupe right now.

I'm making sure I'm technical. I'm showing my power moves.

because I know that's

what Emily and Daniel want to see.

It's amazing that Noah is pulling me into his audition.

It's just giving me the inspiration

to take my dancing to the next level.

her and I, dancing together.

The Next Step is the best of the best.

I'm auditioning because of their international reputation.

They're, like, the top of the world and I want to be a part of that.

I dance because I'm a very competitive person.

I won't stop till I'm on the top and I will fight for it.

My goal is to always be the best dancer.

Jacquie broke up with me because she thinks I'm not a good enough dancer.

Honestly, that still hurts a lot.

It's been two years but I'm still not over it.

I don't know when I'm going to get over it.

We're looking at dancers from other studios as well B-Troupe.

After what happened last year,

no dancer should feel like their spot is safe.

There are some amazing dancers here.

Last year, I was in B-Troupe and I didn't audition

for A-Troupe because I didn't feel I was ready.

I really hope I can get into A-Troupe this year.

Being back in A-Troupe would mean the world to me.

I'm one step closer to getting back to regionals

and I'm also with my best friends...

..and dancing with your best friends is the best thing ever.

You know with that outburst earlier?

-Yeah, that was really unprofessional.

I need to be on A-Troupe.

My mom wants me to be A-Troupe.

And even though Emily may not like me, I have to be there.

Amy is such an incredible dancer and she inspires me to be better.

I have no doubt that she will make A-Troupe.

I would be devastated if I didn't make A-Troupe.

It means the world to me.

Not dancing on the team and not feeling that energy...

..it would be really hard.

I dance because there's no other feeling.

It's helped me through some ups and downs and dance has always been that

one thing that has been there for me.

I am going to perform like there's no business and make sure that today

they only look at me.

I was your typical hockey, baseball,

soccer boy but I always had this dancing part of me.

Even on the ice, they'd play music in between shifts

and I'd dance around on my defence line.

In hockey I wasn't going to make it to the NHL

but in dance I may make it

on The Next Step.

I dance because I feel it's a way for me to find myself

and lose myself at the same time.

It just brings a passion in me that

I just can't even describe it.

I was a dance captain at my old studio.

But I didn't really fit in there.

I'm hoping that being here at The Next Step

will be a fresh start for me.

We need technique.

We need talent. We need dedication.

It really has to be the whole package

or you're not going to make my A-Troupe.

I just think we were really clear about that we were looking for

technique, right? And if they are not showing it to us

then it makes me wonder - can they do it?

You need the X factor, the star quality.

That's what makes a really phenomenal dancer.

And that's what is going to make a really phenomenal team.

Michelle is definitely A-Troupe material.

I mean, we already knew it going into the auditions

but it is nice to see her doing her thing.

It feels really strange to have Emily and Daniel judging my dancing,

because I've always been on

the same level as them.

Yeah. Maybe she's just warming up. But we'll see.

Being dance captain means the world to me.

I think I did a great job as dance captain last year.

So there is no reason for me not to be dance captain again.

My goal is definitely to move up in A-Troupe.

I definitely want to be featured in some dances.

I definitely want to even be dance captain.

I just want to be at the top.

When my family moved here,

when I'm feeling bad. I drink juice.

So I'm just going to go home, drink some juice, turn on the TV,

and lay back because today was not a good day.

I'm going to do that.

Honestly, I'm just glad that B-Troupe trains in Studio A which

means I have less chances of running into Jacquie.

And with the way Emily's running this studio,

I'm not sure I even want to be here any more.

I mean B-Troupe? What's the point?

They are talking about moving down to B-Troupe

when they went to regionals last year.

They are talking about quitting dance!

I can't believe what Emily has done.

This is so wrong.

I've got to do something about this.

Cut from A-Troupe.

Uh, yeah, of course you can. But make sure you call me Miss Emily.

It's just protocol.

I think you made a huge mistake today.

You cut some of the most amazing dancers

and it just doesn't make sense to me.

But I didn't cut any of the amazing dancers.

All of them are on my troupe.

You only chose the classically- trained dancers.

What about the hip-hop dancers? Or the break dancers?

Michelle, those dancers are just a hindrance

when it comes to competition.

It's more important to have the technique.
