Welcome to another Weekend Download. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:06
I'm in deep Berkshire, | 0:15:06 | 0:15:07
to find out something very strange going on on this field. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:11
Apparently, there's suspicions of flying saucers. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:13
I don't know whether it's true, but I'm here to find out. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:16
I'm Andy, I'm 18 years old, | 0:15:22 | 0:15:24
I play for Great Britain Junior's Ultimate Frisbee. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:26
I've been playing Frisbee for about six years now. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:30
I'm Lochan, I'm 14 years old, | 0:15:30 | 0:15:32
I've been playing Frisbee for about a year and a half. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:34
As well as playing for Great Britain, I also play for my local team, | 0:15:34 | 0:15:37
Stags. They're from Maidenhead Furze Platt School. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:40
So, Ultimate is like a seven-a-side team sport which is non-contact, | 0:15:40 | 0:15:44
and there's two end zones like in American football. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
The aim of the game is to score goals by catching | 0:15:47 | 0:15:50
the disc inside of the end zone. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:52
OK, so they're not that kind of flying saucers. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:55
But whilst I'm here, I might as well learn how to Frisbee. Let's go. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:59
What's up, guys? Nice to meet you, I'm Richard. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:02
-What's up, man, you all right? What's up, dude? -I'm Andy. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:07
-So you guys are in the GB squad for Frisbeeing, right? -Yeah. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
The only time I've ever done Frisbee is when I go on holiday. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:13
I've never actually played it. But there is a game you can play, right? | 0:16:13 | 0:16:16
Yeah, it's really fast, athletic and it's really fun to play. | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
What's the first thing I need to know? | 0:16:19 | 0:16:20
Throwing and catching are your main skills. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
-Shall we go try it out? -Right, let's do it. Let's go. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
-So, what's first up? -We're going to learn how to throw first. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:30
Hold it like a fist. Firmly but not too tight. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:33
Second thing you need to know is your footwork. Step across | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
your body, face your shoulders away from the direction you're throwing. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:39
So, you're going to be throwing to Lochan over there. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:42
Then you pull it towards you and it's just like sweeping | 0:16:42 | 0:16:44
the crumbs off a table, that sort of motion. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:46
-Try to keep the disc as parallel to the ground as possible. -OK. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
-Like that. -That's quite nice. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
-Do you want a go? -Yeah, let's do it. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:55
-Nice. -I made him run for that. He's a good catcher. One hand. | 0:16:55 | 0:16:59
You see that? It nearly sliced me. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:02
The safest way to catch is the pancake catch. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:04
One hand on top, one hand underneath. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:07
Spread your fingers out wide, get your body behind it. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:09
Right, let's have another go. So, step. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
-Nice. -That's all right. Yeah. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:17
One hand on top. Nice, that's perfect. | 0:17:17 | 0:17:19
-Right, so what's next? -Next is the forehand. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:24
Instead of stepping across the body, step away from the body. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:28
Instead of holding it like a fist, | 0:17:28 | 0:17:29
you hold it with two fingers on the rim just like that. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:32
Then with you stepped across, | 0:17:32 | 0:17:34
and you've opened up your shoulders | 0:17:34 | 0:17:35
to the direction that you're throwing in, | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
then you snap your wrist, just like your whipping a towel. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
You just really snap and whip back. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:43
Try and snap your wrist and try and get as much rotation as possible. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:48
Step across. Nice. That's perfect. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
It's all about that whip at the end, innit? | 0:17:50 | 0:17:52
There is one I see on the internet | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
when they actually hold it like this and throw it like that. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:03
That's called the hammer. It's the same grip as the forehand, | 0:18:03 | 0:18:06
same stance, you're just throwing it | 0:18:06 | 0:18:08
literally like a tennis ball or a baseball, over the top of your head. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:11
And you release it and it'll go upside down and to your receiver. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:14
-That's nice. -That was a good one. Wicked. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:18
-Thanks for teaching me, guys. -No problem. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:20
Usually, at this point in the VT, I get thrown into a game. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:23
I have no idea what I'm doing. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:24
I know you guys won't throw me in the deep end, | 0:18:24 | 0:18:26
so what I'm going to do, I'm going to go home, practise, | 0:18:26 | 0:18:29
let you guys know how I get on. | 0:18:29 | 0:18:31
Funny you should say that, cos we brought down | 0:18:31 | 0:18:33
our GB team-mates to give us a game. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:35
You stitched me up. Every time. Every time! | 0:18:39 | 0:18:43
All you need is a Frisbee and some cones to set it up, | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
players' jumpers or use football lines. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:53
It's an easy sport to get good at quite quickly, as long | 0:18:53 | 0:18:55
as you have the determination to keep training hard and just enjoy it. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:59
Frisbee is so simple to get into, and a lot of fun. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
The best part is, it's cheap. You can get one for under £10. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:06
That's how you do it. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:07
Take the rim of the Frisbee in your fingers, hold it firmly but gently. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:11
Curl your wrist slightly back towards your body with your elbow | 0:19:11 | 0:19:14
pointing up and outwards. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:16
Bring your hand back and move your arm forward quickly. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
Throw it flat, like you're sweeping crumbs off a table, | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
but not too hard. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:23
Catch it using the pancake method. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
Bring your hands together and bring the disc in towards your body. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:27
Practise throwing it. There are three main throws. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:32
The forehand, the backhand and the hammer. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
Start with the backhand, then move to the forehand. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:36
Remember, it's just like whipping a towel. | 0:19:36 | 0:19:38
And the hammer is the same, but over your head. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:41
If you want to put your skills to the test, you can play | 0:19:42 | 0:19:44
a game of Ultimate Frisbee. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:46
It's usually seven-a-side, but you can play with less if you want. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
Boys and girls together, it doesn't matter, | 0:19:49 | 0:19:51
and you're not allowed to touch the other players. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:53
The rules are, you can't run with the Frisbee. | 0:19:53 | 0:19:55
It's a bit like basketball. You have to stay still when you receive it. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:58
Pass to the other members of your team, | 0:19:58 | 0:20:00
and whoever's over the line when they catch it, scores. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:02
So, I guess we didn't find any flying saucers. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:04
But today, I learned how to throw a Frisbee properly. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
Which means that's Weekend Download complete. I mean, flying saucers?! | 0:20:07 | 0:20:11
