So, my TBR co-star Daniel has been out for another Weekend Download. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:08
Now, he's trying to catch the perfect wind. Confused? | 0:08:08 | 0:08:12
Hm, I am. Let's take a look at this. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
Hey, I'm Danny, and this week I've hit the coast for Weekend Download. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:20
And today I'm going to be flying a kite, but not just any kite. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:24
I'm George Dufty, I'm 15 years old | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
and I'm one of the UK's best youth kite surfers. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
I've been kite surfing for about two and a half years | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
and I've been kiting for about three. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
There's loads of reasons why I love kite surfing. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
It's the combination of a lot of my favourite sports, | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
like surfing, kite flying, | 0:08:52 | 0:08:54
skateboarding... And plus you can get really big air, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
and that's one of the best things about it. | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
-Hi, George, nice to meet you, I'm Danny. -Hi, Danny. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
So, you're a bit of a kiting expert, yeah? | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
Yeah, I'm currently set as second in the Under 19 British Championships. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:11
That's pretty cool. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:12
So, that looked pretty dangerous with that big kite. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
-Am I going to be flying about like that? -Not necessarily. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
First of all, we're going to work on a trainer kite, | 0:09:18 | 0:09:20
which is a much smaller version, | 0:09:20 | 0:09:21
to get you used to how to fly the kite and where the power is. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:25
So then, eventually, you can move onto that. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
So, we'll go and get suited then. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
-Yeah. -All right then. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:30
-Right, talk me through it then. -Well, this is your trainer kite. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
This is a two-metre compared to the nine that we had over there. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:40
First of all, we've got to lay it out flat, downwind. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
There upwind, that's where the wind is coming from. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
Here's downwind. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:46
Like this. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:50
-OK, so... -OK, there we go. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:52
Here you have got the bridles, which is this bit and this bit, | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
which are attached to the kite. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:57
Now, we'll put it on the ground and then we can lay the lines. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
OK, you need to lay the kite down, | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
otherwise it is going to blow away. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:04
Just grab something heavy, like a shoe. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
You're going to use your shoe, OK. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
Right, let's get the bar. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
You're going to lay the lines upwind of the kite, | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
so we just unwind them like this. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
Go on then. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:17
So, we are ready to launch now. I'm going to hold the kite like this... | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
-OK. -..to get the air in the kite. You run down there and grab the bar. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
OK. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:29 | |
Step back and pull into your hip. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34
-Like that? -Hey! | 0:10:34 | 0:10:36
All around the side, you've got the least power. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
If you keep it at 12 o'clock, | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
it's in a stable position, you should be fine there. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
-OK. -That's really cool. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
Right, so now I've got this relatively down. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
I want to know how to turn, so are you going to show me how to do this? | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
-Yeah. So, instead of like a car, which steers like this... -Right. | 0:10:56 | 0:11:00
..you want to be pulling left and right. So, you pull with your right | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
to go right. And to go left, you pull with your left. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
So, really push and pull. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
You can do it without looking. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:11
It's a skill you need to put the board on your feet. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
So, you got one hand and then you got to put the board on. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
The winds are a lot lighter now. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:17
If you try to bring up from 12 over to like three. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
-OK. -All right, that's it. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
There you go, that's good. And now to the left. That's it. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
So, you can bring it over to nine over there. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
That's it, that's really cool. And then back over to three. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:32
If you are looking into getting into any kite sport, best thing | 0:11:36 | 0:11:40
to do is to buy a small kite. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:41
Between one or two metres would be really good. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:44
And with a bar is even better. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:45
You don't need that much wind to learn to kite, | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
but a windy day always helps. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:50
Giving kiting a go couldn't be easier. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:52
Get yourself a stunt kite for as little as ten pounds | 0:11:54 | 0:11:57
and get down to your nearest park to try it out. | 0:11:57 | 0:11:59
Set it up following its instructions. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:01
Grip the handles or bar to take off. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:03
Or you can get a friend to release it for you. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:05
Bring your hands back down into the flying position | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
and try to keep the kite at 12 o'clock position. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:10
To turn right, pull down right on the bar. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
And to turn left, pull left on the bar. Simple. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
Your goal should be to move the kite in a big figure of eight movement. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
It's just like riding a bike, but without the peddling. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
To land the kite, just bring your bar forward | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
and it should drop out of the sky. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
Never launch in high winds and aim to keep your feet | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
firmly on the ground, unless you are an experienced flier, of course. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:35
The smaller your kite, the easier it is to learn. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:37
George used a harness on his bigger kite. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
You should only attempt to use a practice kite when starting out. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:42
I cannot believe how much I've learned to just one day. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:46
And that means that's Weekend Download complete. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
There's just one problem. He didn't tell me how to get it down. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:53
George! George! | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
George, how do we get it down? | 0:12:56 | 0:12:58
George! | 0:12:58 | 0:12:59
That looks wicked. Next time the wind's up, | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
I'm definitely getting involved in some of that. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:05
Well done, Daniel. And that is Weekend Download complete. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
