0:00:400:00:42

Let's visit Tyra in Ghana.

0:00:420:00:45

Today, Tyra and her sister Tracey are helping their mum

0:00:480:00:51

cook one of their favourite meals.

0:00:510:00:54

Stew with rice.

0:00:540:00:57

Wash it and put it here for me.

0:00:570:00:59

Slowly. Soak it. Not too hard.

0:01:010:01:03

Tyra and Tracey are washing peppers,

0:01:050:01:07

chillies and purple onions so Mum can slice them.

0:01:070:01:12

Only Mum's allowed to use this sharp knife!

0:01:130:01:16

-TRANSLATION:

-These peppers aren't ripe, are they?

0:01:310:01:34

No.

0:01:340:01:36

The white peppers will turn green once they're ripe.

0:01:370:01:42

Tyra, go and throw the water away for me.

0:01:420:01:45

You and Tracey hold the bowl.

0:01:470:01:50

Go and throw it in the gutter.

0:01:500:01:53

Outside.

0:01:530:01:55

Open it. Can you open it?

0:01:550:01:58

All the dirty water goes straight into the outside drain.

0:02:020:02:07

Tyra, you've had lots of practice at this!

0:02:100:02:14

Slow, slow. So that you won't put anything on the floor.

0:02:190:02:23

OK.

0:02:240:02:25

Slow, slow, slow.

0:02:270:02:31

Tyra likes using the grinder to crush the peppers.

0:02:310:02:35

Slow!

0:02:350:02:36

Slow, don't put your hands in. The peppers are hot!'

0:02:380:02:43

Mum's teaching Tyra, and Tyra's teaching Tracey!

0:02:460:02:51

-TRANSLATION:

-Tracey, move your hand!

0:02:530:02:56

Move your hand up higher!

0:02:560:02:57

Or the pepper will burn you!

0:02:590:03:01

We've still got to grind this one.

0:03:110:03:14

Leave it. Wait!

0:03:200:03:21

-TRANSLATION:

-Are you going to put the onions in now?

0:03:260:03:29

Hang on Tyra, I know it's fun, but Mum has to take over now.

0:03:320:03:36

You've been really helpful though!

0:03:390:03:41

Mum has to make the peppers into a paste,

0:03:440:03:46

so you have to press down really hard with the grinder.

0:03:460:03:51

Uh oh. Sneaking the tomatoes.

0:03:570:03:59

Mum can see you...

0:04:000:04:03

even though she's not looking!

0:04:030:04:05

Tyra, I want some!

0:04:060:04:09

Why are you eating all of my tomatoes?

0:04:110:04:14

Ah, ah, show me your mouth!

0:04:160:04:18

Tracey, if you don't want it I'll eat it!

0:04:190:04:22

Just a bit of clearing away to do.

0:04:260:04:29

And now the cloth, to keep any flies away.

0:04:320:04:34

At last, the meal is ready to eat!

0:04:370:04:40

Enjoy your tasty lunch.

0:04:430:04:45

What a great team!

0:04:460:04:47

Now it's time for us to take another trip!

0:04:490:04:52

It's Rhys, in Canada.

0:04:580:05:01

It's cold and snowy here,

0:05:030:05:06

but it's the perfect weather for Rhys' mum to teach him and his

0:05:060:05:10

sister Seren something new.

0:05:100:05:12

Watch out, it's slippy here, right?

0:05:120:05:15

-Ice skating.

-OK, let's go put our skates on.

0:05:150:05:18

Rhys' skates are like shoes with thin pieces of metal, called blades,

0:05:190:05:24

on the bottom.

0:05:240:05:25

-On?

-Yup.

0:05:260:05:27

Are you feeling a little bit nervous, Rhys?

0:05:300:05:32

I don't know how well this is going to go for me.

0:05:320:05:35

Well, remember, it's the first time, right?

0:05:350:05:38

We'll just go nice and gentle.

0:05:380:05:40

All Rhys has to stand on are those narrow blades!

0:05:400:05:44

Ah!

0:05:450:05:46

-Woo!

-And the ice is very slippy!

0:05:470:05:51

Hold my hands. Just practice like you're walking on them.

0:05:510:05:55

Get the feel of them. That's right.

0:05:560:05:59

You're doing great.

0:06:000:06:02

OK, step step.

0:06:040:06:06

Look! You're gliding!

0:06:080:06:10

There you go, there you go.

0:06:100:06:12

-Remember, falling is part of things, right?

-Yup.

0:06:140:06:18

I'm just going to use my arms...

0:06:180:06:21

How am I going to get up now?

0:06:250:06:26

You get up like this!

0:06:260:06:28

Put the ski down.

0:06:290:06:30

You gotta go one at a time.

0:06:300:06:32

Put this knee underneath you. Now put this leg up.

0:06:340:06:37

Put this leg up and then pull up.

0:06:370:06:40

There you go.

0:06:400:06:41

You're back on your feet, Rhys.

0:06:410:06:43

Give it another go!

0:06:430:06:45

That's it. That's it.

0:06:480:06:49

I don't know what I'm doing.

0:06:540:06:56

That's OK, we'll just do a little loop.

0:06:560:06:58

You're doing great!

0:06:580:06:59

Going that way again, are you?

0:07:000:07:02

I'm doing what I can!

0:07:020:07:05

Argh!

0:07:050:07:07

You're doing really well now, Rhys...

0:07:070:07:10

Do you guys want to sit and have hot chocolate?

0:07:160:07:19

Have a break for a minute? Rest those ankles?

0:07:190:07:21

-OK, be careful going to the bench!

-Oh!

0:07:210:07:25

-Are you OK?

-Yeah!

0:07:250:07:26

Oh, falling over is part of learning to skate!

0:07:260:07:30

Blow into it and take a sip, it should be fine.

0:07:300:07:33

Hot chocolate!

0:07:350:07:36

Just what you want on a cold day.

0:07:390:07:41

You've got a good hot chocolate moustache going on!

0:07:420:07:46

You were doing great for the first time out.

0:07:470:07:50

Look, that's the way to do it.

0:07:520:07:54

-You'll do that after some more practice.

-Do that for me.

0:07:550:07:59

Look, you're doing it!

0:08:030:08:05

-Good job!

-Rhys is skating all by himself.

0:08:070:08:11

And it's his first time on the ice!

0:08:110:08:13

And he's thought of a game to help him get better.

0:08:150:08:18

-I'm playing fetch.

-With yourself?

0:08:210:08:24

That's a good way to learn.

0:08:240:08:26

-Hey, which way are you going?

-I don't know.

0:08:310:08:34

-I'll do one more fetch.

-OK.

0:08:360:08:39

You did good!

0:08:490:08:51

You'll never forget your first day on the ice, Rhys.

0:08:550:08:59

Now go and get warm...

0:09:010:09:02

..while we go and see another friend.

0:09:030:09:06

# Where shall we go?

0:09:080:09:10

# And who shall we see? #

0:09:100:09:11

Let's catch up with Mario,

0:09:120:09:14

in Italy.

0:09:150:09:16

When it's very hot, Mario's favourite place to be is in the

0:09:200:09:25

swimming pool, with his brother, sister and cousins.

0:09:250:09:29

Time for a game.

0:09:310:09:33

Mario's older brother Salvo is

0:09:340:09:36

throwing seashells and blue stones into the pool.

0:09:360:09:40

-TRANSLATION:

-It's a race to see who can find the most.

0:09:430:09:46

Who'll win the race?

0:09:480:09:49

Mario or Nicole?

0:09:500:09:52

-TRANSLATION:

-Don't swim too close to each other under the water!

0:10:010:10:05

-TRANSLATION:

-Come on, come on!

0:10:080:10:10

Wait for the shells to settle, Mario.

0:10:160:10:19

-TRANSLATION:

-OK. Three...

0:10:200:10:23

two...

0:10:230:10:24

one...

0:10:240:10:25

jump!

0:10:250:10:26

Have you found any shells, Mario?

0:10:340:10:37

No?

0:10:380:10:39

Mario loves moving through the water.

0:10:500:10:53

Still no luck?

0:11:010:11:02

Oh, Nicole's wearing goggles, so she can swim right to the bottom!

0:11:100:11:15

There are the first two shells!

0:11:200:11:23

Even Nella the dog wants to play!

0:11:240:11:27

The race is on.

0:11:280:11:30

Are you sure you don't want some goggles, Mario?

0:11:390:11:42

Because they're really helping Nicole. She's finding everything!

0:11:430:11:48

-TRANSLATION:

-There aren't any more!

0:11:540:11:57

-TRANSLATION:

-There's loads!

0:11:570:11:59

-TRANSLATION:

-Salvo, look after mine!

0:12:010:12:03

How many are there?

0:12:030:12:07

I want some goggles! Can I take these?

0:12:070:12:11

You found the goggles!

0:12:110:12:13

But be careful running around the pool, Mario, it can be dangerous!

0:12:130:12:18

How's the race going, Salvo?

0:12:240:12:27

-TRANSLATION:

-Nicole's found loads.

0:12:270:12:29

Mario's got two.

0:12:290:12:31

And Nicole's got... One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight...

0:12:310:12:37

Nicole's winning!

0:12:370:12:38

-TRANSLATION:

-Look, I've got loads!

0:12:480:12:50

Now you've got the hang of it, Mario.

0:12:550:12:58

Those goggles were a good idea.

0:12:580:13:00

-TRANSLATION:

-I've got one!

-Another one?

0:13:020:13:06

-TRANSLATION:

-Another! He's got them all!

0:13:210:13:24

-TRANSLATION:

-Let's throw them all back in!

0:13:270:13:30

It doesn't matter who's won.

0:13:320:13:34

Time for another game.

0:13:340:13:36

What fun everyone's had.

0:13:400:13:42

Tyra helped her mum make a delicious lunch.

0:13:430:13:47

Rhys went ice skating for the first time.

0:13:480:13:50

And Mario played in the swimming pool.

0:13:520:13:55

I wonder who we'll meet next time?

0:13:560:13:58

Stories about the everyday lives of children living in eight different countries around the world.

In this programme we visit three children who are all having fun.

In Ghana, Tyra, who's five, is helping her mum cook tea, along with little sister Tracy.

In Canada, eight-year-old Rhys is learning how to ice skate - and taking a few tumbles along the way.

And in Italy, seven-year-old Mario is escaping from the hot sun by playing a diving game in the swimming pool with his brother and sister.

We see that, although children live in different countries, may look different and speak different languages, the joys and challenges of childhood are universal.
