The Dog House is home to the most amazing dog-training competition.

It's here that champion dog trainer Zak George is on a mission

to find THE best young dog trainer in the country.

but there can be only one winner.

Oh, yeah!

Today, three more of the UK's finest dog trainers and their dogs

are going to be let off the leash to battle it out for a place

in the quarterfinals.

This is not a trick that comes quick.

Who will be thrown off the scent?

We've got a lot of work to do.

Today, on Who Let the Dogs Out? - Cable TV for canines,

Zak teaches Nelly a welcoming trick

and three young trainers have a barrel of fun as they battle it out

for a place in the quarterfinals.

Hundreds of young dog trainers from all over the UK were desperate

to come to the Dog House, but only 27 made it.

Today, Charlotte and Whispa, Angelina and Jess and Rosie

and Honey are going to be put to the test

in an incredibly-difficult balancing challenge.

Let's see them in action at the try-outs.

This time on Who Let The Dogs Out? -

there can only be one Top Dog Trainer of the entire series.

That means that the competition at the try-outs was tough,

with everyone desperate to get to the Dog House

to get their hands on that trophy.

Charlotte and her dog, Whispa, were the first to secure

a place for today's challenge.

I'm Charlotte and my dog is called Whispa, and we're from Warwickshire.

OK, show me what you got.

Up.

'I like doing competitions with Whispa.

'And I'm a little bit nervous'

about meeting Zak.

-Stay. Good girl.

-Very nice.

'I think Whispa would be really good because she's got'

quite a competitive streak in her.

Whoa, whoa, she did it!

Let her know! That was amazing!

Charlotte and Whispa were great.

In order to really do well at the Dog House,

you've got to get it. They do.

'Hi, I'm Angelina and this is my dog, Jess, and we're from Devon.'

I'm really excited because my dog, Jess, is with me.

And I'm not nervous because she is really good.

That's good, look at that! Yeah!

Jess loves riding on the back of my horse with me

because we spent time together, and she loves it.

Don't get me excited, this would be incredible.

-Back. Jess, go back.

-Take your time.

Jess makes me really proud all the time

because she does all of her tricks really good. She never lets me down.

See if you can get her interested in that.

I just wanted to see if she would play with a beach ball,

you've got her balancing on it. Look at that!

Really, really good.

And she is a very humble dog trainer.

She is sincere. Those are my favourite qualities about her.

They could do very well.

Most trainers brought one dog to the try-outs,

but not Rosie - she doubled her chances by bringing two dogs!

My name is Rosie and this is Dusty and this is Honey.

But it was Honey who made it through to the Dog House.

Very good, very good, OK.

My try-out went quite good.

With Honey, she was a bit wary of Zak,

-cos she doesn't really like boys.

-I move away, she's comfortable.

If I get into the Dog House, I would be really happy

because I wanted to get there.

I like your energy a lot. Very good.

Good girl.

Rosie did a really good job out here - a very good trainer,

a really well-trained dog.

Let's hope that keeps up.

The three trainers impressed Zak so much

that he has invited them to the Dog House to teach them

one of his trickiest stunts yet.

They will need poise and control to master this challenge!

How are you guys doing today? Are we excited about today?

BOTH: Yeah. Well, guess what?

Today you are going to be teaching your dog how to balance on a barrel.

For this trick, your dogs will have to jump onto a barrel

and not only balance there, but travel forwards or backwards.

At showtime, the winner will be the dog that travels ten metres

the quickest.

Now, Angelina and Jess, you're smiling over there,

and I know exactly why. The last time I saw you,

you were working on already teaching this trick. Have you continued?

-Yeah.

-Oh, boy. Guys, we've got a lot of work to do.

Are you ready to get into training? BOTH: Yeah.

What I want you to do is I want you to put the barrel right here

in the base that we have.

Do you see this? What this does

is this keeps it very secure so our dogs

don't get scared when it moves around.

Now, what is she doing?

Guys, check this out. We haven't even started training yet

and she's on it.

We've got a lot of work to do. Now, Charlotte and Whispa,

I want to start with you guys.

We want to encourage her to get up here. You can see we gave this

some traction to make this a bit easier for Whispa.

Ooh, that is clever.

It'll stop the dogs from slipping off the barrel.

We want to encourage her to just stay up there. We're not going to move it.

We want her to be really comfortable. Let's start to do that. Look!

-Very good. Now give a stay.

-Stay.

-Now show me some genuine,

-real appreciation for Whispa right now.

-Good girl!

-Good.

Whispa is doing well, but the barrel seems just a bit

too small for her.

Very nice. Look at her tail wagging. I'm going to go on

-to Rosie and Honey right now, OK?

-OK.

-Very good. All right, Rosie, how are we doing?

-Fine.

-Let's encourage Honey to get up here.

-Up.

Honey's barrel is certainly not too small for her!

Is it OK if I move this a bit? Now, give a very clear stay there.

-Stay.

-And signal a stay, good.

-Stay.

-And now...

Very good. Now,

reward that, let her know. It's that timing, remember.

The second I move that and she's OK with it.

It's awesome, I love that, thank you very much.

Continue working on that.

I'm going to come over here to Angelina and Jess now, all right?

-How are you doing?

-Fine, thank you.

I've been glancing over here at you

and you have the most confident smile on your face right now.

I know Jess is a little bit further ahead in this. OK,

so, we've got her here, she's on the barrel.

I think we're ready to take the base away right now.

Angelina and Jess have already been practising this trick at home.

I wonder how far they got with their training.

Whoa, look at this!

Lean back. Lean back, Jess. Listen, back. Back, back.

-Look at these guys.

-What?

Angelina and Jess can already do it!

-Good girl, you did it!

-Now, when you do this,

are you having to walk away from her

or do you still have to stay with her?

Well, we're still staying with her

for a minute to make sure she doesn't lose her confidence.

OK, very good. I want you guys to continue to work on this.

Doing very, very well. I'll come back over here to Charlotte and Whispa,

see how they're doing. We're going to go to the next level with them now.

It's time to see how Whispa gets on with a moving barrel.

But because Whispa is bigger than the other dogs,

she would be more comfortable on a larger barrel. Luckily,

-Zak has one for her.

-If she so much

as thinks about taking a step, you're going to be there instantly

-to let her know, "Yes, I love that behaviour out of you."

-Yeah.

Whispa, on. Come on, on.

You can do it, Whispa.

Let her know that you like this.

Now, I'm going to go this way a little bit. Watch her feet!

That was it! Very good. And she can get down.

We don't want to ask for too much too early, you know?

I want to see you do this, but I want to see you hold the barrel

-and encourage her to get up here.

-It moves... Feel how easily.

Now it's Honey's turn to try walking on a wobbly barrel!

And same thing. Let's go ahead and encourage Honey to get up

-Very good. Now, you heard everything I was saying back there, right?

-Yeah.

I'm going to move the barrel slightly. Right there, go ahead.

Did you see that tiny step with the front legs?

Walking on a wobbly barrel certainly looks very difficult!

I want to see more sincere energy out of you.

-OK.

-And I know she's a chill dog,

but let her know better, show me better communication.

Continue working. You were doing terrific.

-The others certainly have a lot of catching up to do.

The most important thing for this stunt is to take baby steps.

If you want to accomplish anything meaningful or amazing,

you've got to celebrate those small victories.

Keep up the good work.

While those guys are hard at work training, I'm going to watch

some privileged dogs who really do enjoy the finer things in life.

For some extremely posh dogs, only the best will do -

the finest foods,

the latest beauty treatments...

..and, of course, first-class travel at all times.

Working for a posh dog can be really humiliating.

Posh dogs are often mean to their staff.

Being posh often means being a little eccentric.

But when you are posh, frankly, who cares?

Still to come, Zak teaches Nelly a new trick

and the teams set themselves up for a balancing bonanza.

Back in the Dog House garden, the girls are busy with their dogs

and barrels.

You guys, you are just... Wow!

You are just blowing my mind right now!

You're doing incredible with this.

Although Angelina and Jess have already mastered

walking on the barrel, there is always room for improvement.

I think I might be able to make it to the final.

And I really would like it cos Jess really deserves it.

She's the best dog to me.

And if she was a celebrity,

I'd say she's Mary Poppins cos she's practically perfect in every way.

-Good, good. Yes!

-Good girl!

-Very nice.

Whispa is still very unsteady on the barrel

and Charlotte is having to give her a lot of support for every step.

I'm feeling a little bit nervous

and I think I'll have to work on it a lot,

but I really hope I can make it through to the final

because I think Whispa's really good at training and learning new tricks.

-Come on.

-Very good! Now, if she so much as thinks about making a step,

you're going to let her know that you love that behaviour

your own special way.

Rosie seems to have no trouble getting Honey onto the barrel,

but getting Honey to stay up there is proving much more difficult.

Our training's been going quite well,

but Honey keeps jumping off the barrel and going back on.

I don't think she gets the idea what she's meant to be doing.

Hey! You keep falling, don't you?

I think I'll just try and do lots of little-and-often training.

I'll practise, like, all that I can in all my spare time with Whispa.

I hope that it will be enough.

They found the tricks a bit hard, but I think she can do it.

And I feel really confident about it.

The best part was when he started training. Jess was ahead.

And the worst bit was when I have to compete against the friends

I've made.

Whispa, Jess and Honey are all very different dogs, but let's take a look

at their mutt measurements and see what makes them tick.

Whispa is an English cocker spaniel

and her favourite nibbles are cheese and sausages.

English cocker spaniels are usually very active,

and Whispa is no exception.

She loves to play tennis and bat the ball with her paw.

But will Whispa put her paws to good use to steady herself on a barrel?

Next up is Jess, the Jack Russell, whose favourite hobby

is to ride a pony and do tricks on its back. Amazing!

She also likes to skip with Angelina and have fun on the garden slide.

Jack Russells tend to be athletic and fearless,

so will Angelina and Jess use this to their advantage?

Honey is a Jack Russell-Chihuahua cross who loves nothing more

than being stroked and given titbits.

She competes in agility

and apparently can balance

on a giant, wobbly, pink cushion,

but will that help her to balance on a barrel that is twice

the size of her?

One week on and with a place in the quarterfinals at stake,

our teams are pulling out

all the stops to be the best barrel balancer!

You guys are looking unbelievable here!

Every one of your dogs is on the barrel, they all seem really,

really comfortable up there.

Why don't you guys continue to practise?

I'd like to work with you, Angelina,

and Jess and see how you guys are doing.

Angelina and Jess have been ahead from the start,

how much progress have they made since we last saw them?

Oh, wow! Jess looks like she could easily cover ten metres.

Try picking up your energy a little bit. Let's see if you can get Jess

Very good. Go ahead and reward big right there. That's good.

My biggest advice to you is if you pick up your energy a bit,

I think that'll take you to the next level.

Because you're better than last time.

Rosie and Honey, come back over here.

Honey's quickly and confidently onto that barrel.

But - oh! - she's quickly and confidently off it again.

-How far has she gone?

-She has gone one-and-a-half metres so far.

That is a good start but ten metres at showtime is a long way,

and time is running out.

Yeah, if you could actually come over here. I don't know, would this work,

-for you to change your position a bit?

-Honey.

Just try. Very good. Very good!

Oh, this is good. She's staying up there longer.

Good. Reward her big. Right there. We saw that she was about to fall,

so we want to encourage her to balance up there.

And you can lure her with a treat,

-but you can also have that authentic connection with her, as well.

-OK.

-Make sense?

-Yeah.

-OK, Rosie.

I'm going to let you guys go practise over here. I'm going to bring in

Charlotte and Whispa. Come on over.

-Whispa!

-Very good. How are you guys doing?

-Really well.

-Wonderful!

Go ahead and show me where you are.

Whispa, on. Whispa, steady.

Whispa is going a bit too fast.

Oh, and she's off.

-Good girl!

-Now, I do want to give you some advice here,

because I notice that Whispa keeps coming off the barrel.

Let's work on that right now. I want you to slow Whispa down, actually.

Very good. Now, encourage slowly,

because right now Whispa is just on autopilot,

-which sometimes is good.

-Come on, steady.

-Slow it down.

-Oh!

-Steady.

-Steady.

-Pretty good. If Whispa continues down this path,

I worry that she's going to get just too into it

and then she'll keep falling off the barrel, you know what I mean?

So, it's better to go steady than it is to go super fast. OK.

The teams have had all the training they are going to get.

They have one week to perfect their barrel balancing skills

before showtime.

With only one quarterfinal spot up for grabs,

the pressure is on!

The hardest bit in our training has been making her stay on the barrel.

I might be in with a good chance if Honey has a lighter barrel

and she can push it a little bit more.

I'm going to go like this to help Jess - "Come on! Good girl!

"Back, back. Good girl."

Cos it'll make her go a little bit faster so she will enjoy it more,

and we might be able to get through to the next round.

I think my training session today went really well

because now I've got some tips so I know what I need to practise.

I need to take it back a step and just do it much more slowly.

Balancing on a barrel is a tricky business and requires

a lot of training.

Here are Zak's five steps on how to do it -

one - encourage your dog to jump onto and stand on a stable barrel,

two - once your dog is comfortable staying there,

begin to move the barrel very slightly using your hands,

three - reward your dog for each bit of progress, but only reward

and give positive praise when your dog is on the barrel

to encourage them to want to stay there,

four - once your dog is comfortable with the barrel moving,

gradually increase the speed that the barrel moves,

so you and your dog start to travel some distance,

five - once your dog has got the hang of it, leave a small gap

between you and your dog so they learn to balance and travel distance

on the barrel with your commands only.

Teaching your dog a trick is fun

and it makes their quality of life better,

and that's what having a dog is all about.

Now, today, I've got Nelly and I'm going to show you

how to teach your dog to wave.

Come on in, Nelly!

Oh, I've got some good treats for you.

Now, Nelly already knows sit, we're off to a good start here.

Now, it's best... Look, that's very good.

It's best if your dog already knows how to shake hands or give you paw,

or whatever you want to call it.

That's fantastic, good girl.

So, once our dog is shaking hands like this, we want to encourage them

to stay with it. So, watch what I do here.

May I have your paw, please?

Very good. Stay.

Yes. That was good, that was close. Good.

She's ambidextrous, did you see? That's both paws.

Stay. Almost. Wait, yes! Good girl.

Did you see how she inadvertently held her paw up

for a bit longer there?

I want her to know I like that. I give her a treat.

Let's see if we can get it looking real pretty here.

Nelly, stay. Wave.

Yes! Good girl!

And now maybe if I stand up, she might actually

do it from here. Hey, Nelly, will you wave?

That was fantastic! Nelly, you are an amazing girl.

After a hard day of training, some dogs just like to put their paws up

and relax in front of the TV.

This is Escondido Dog Home in California where the staff

have installed some interesting technology -

Dog TV.

That's TV just for dogs.

With TV fitted,

the pooches are able to spend some quality time in front of the box.

So, what's on? There's relaxation.

Too relaxing? What's on the other side?

Great, wrestling! Not impressed?

What about doggy soaps? Ignore the baby, it is all about the dog!

Even the staff love it!

And apparently, all this relaxation can help the dogs find a new home

because they're happier and more calm

when visitors come in to see them.

So, thanks to the telly,

the Escondido dogs could soon be running free!

16 days of intensive training are over.

It's time for our three trainers to go head-to-head for a place

in the quarterfinals.

For two of the teams, the competition ends here.

I'm quite confident, but the thing is,

if the other dogs deserve it, then they deserve it.

But we're going to try our hardest.

So, who will keep their balance?

I'm feeling a bit nervous because everybody is doing a bit better

than me, because they can go farther,

but Honey can't go as far on the barrel.

Who will wobble under the pressure?

I've really enjoyed getting this far and I just love

spending time with Whispa and teaching her new tricks.

I just really hope Whispa does her best,

and that's all I can ask of her.

It is time to find out.

It is showtime for our barrel-balancing dogs!

One by one they will get on their barrels and start rolling their way

down the course.

The dog that travels ten metres in the fastest time

will be one step closer to winning this -

the very first Who Let The Dogs Out? Top Dog Trainer trophy.

First up, we have Rosie and Honey.

Last time we saw Rosie and Honey, they were struggling in training

and could barely reach 1.5 metres.

They now have a smaller, lighter barrel to help them face

the daunting ten-metre course.

This could be the biggest challenge this team have ever faced!

Rosie and Honey, whenever you're ready.

Good girl. Oops!

Oh, a big wobble!

That is going to knock Honey's confidence.

but Rosie is remaining positive

and gets her straight back on that barrel.

Oh! Honey really looks unsteady on that barrel.

But her tail is wagging, so she's still up for the challenge.

She is off the barrel again, but is keen to get back on there -

good girl!

Rosie is remaining terrifically calm and taking it all in her stride.

Oh, but something is wrong, Honey has stopped wagging her tail

and she does not want her treat!

What is Rosie going to do?!

I think we'll leave it at that, thank you.

Very nice, very good work.

And why did you decide to stop there?

Because Honey was scared and she didn't want to do it any more.

Yeah, so you made the call.

She's not into this, I won't make her do anything she doesn't want to.

Great effort and a brave decision made by Rosie,

she was right to put her dog's feelings before the competition,

but they won't score anything for that attempt.

Next up, Angelina and Jess.

Angelina and Jess were already practising this trick

before they arrived at the Dog House

and have gone from strength to strength during their training.

They are bound to be going through to the quarterfinals.

Angelina and Jess, whenever you're ready.

Next up, Charlotte and Whispa.

This team have come a long way in their training,

but when we last saw them,

Charlotte was finding it difficult to control Whispa's speed

on the barrel, causing her to fall off.

This could have a serious impact on their time.

Charlotte and Whispa, whenever you're ready.

Whispa, on. Good girl. Steady.

And they're off!

Steady, steady! Good girl. Steady, steady, steady.

A strong start and they have definitely slowed down,

but a bit too much. Is she going to fall off?

Steady, steady, steady.

Oh! But she stayed on. Great composure from Whispa.

That is it Charlotte, keep Whispa moving on that barrel.

Steady, steady, steady.

This is turning out to be a steady and solid performance.

-Steady. Steady, steady, steady.

-Wow!

Good girl!

A fantastic display by Charlotte and Whispa.

Their hard work of keeping Whispa on the barrel has paid off.

But they were a full eight seconds slower than Angelina and Jess.

Each of the teams has another attempt, but can anyone hope

to beat Angelina and Jess?

Back for more, it's Rosie and Honey.

And on this attempt, they're determined not to give up.

It takes them more than three minutes,

but after a monumental effort

they are finally approaching the ten-metre finish!

Oopsies!

Honey!

Up, up! Good girl. Go on.

Wow, they did it!

Nice work!

It took them three minutes and 23 seconds,

but Rosie and Honey showed that barrel who was the boss!

So, back in the driving seat, it's Angelina and Jess.

Look at the speed of this pair!

They are steamrolling their way across that course.

Good girl! Come on! Come on, Jess! Come on! Come on, Jess!

Barrel-balancing supremos to the very end!

Amazing! They knocked a whole second off their previous time

and have done it in 17 seconds!

Surely that is enough to get them through to the next round.

It is now or never for Charlotte and Whispa!

They were nine seconds slower than Angelina and Jess last time.

Come on, you pair!

Wow, look at the pace of Whispa! They are really whizzing along!

Wow, that was fast! But was it fast enough?

I want you guys to know that all of you did wonderful.

I saw significant progress from each and every one of you.

I'm thrilled with how hard you worked with your dogs.

It's very evident that you put in a lot of time.

That being said, I can now reveal

that the winner of today's barrel-balancing challenge is...

..Charlotte and Whispa!

Congratulations! Fantastic job!

It was very, very close between you and Angelina and Jess.

Whispa and Charlotte finally found their groove and rocketed

across the course, beating Angelina and Jess by a full three seconds!
