-Michael is Momoko's brother.

-Momoko's mother comes from Japan.

-First, take one of these.

-Sushi is Japanese food.

-It is made from seaweed and rice.

-Then Gilly's favourite.

-She wants fish sushi.

-The fish tonight is smoked salmon.

-On top of that,

-Momoko adds some tuna.

-She places it

-on the salmon and rice.

-That's how you make sushi.

-Roll it all together.

-Yum!

-I love sushi.

-I live in Cardiff.

-Half my family live in Japan.

-Tad-cu and Mam-gu

-sent me these dolls from Japan.

-This is a wedding.

-Here are the king and queen.

-The bridesmaid.

-They're wearing kimonos.

-Kimono is the traditional costume

-of Japan.

-It's the same shape

-as a dressing gown.

-The material isn't the same.

-The women in the family

-wear kimonos.

-It's traditional.

-We show this on Girls' Day.

-We have to put it away by March 3.

-Otherwise, according to legend,

-I won't marry.

-I don't want to get married!

-Momoko's parents were married in

-Japan wearing traditional costumes.

-This is Mami.

-This is Dadi on his wedding day.

-Some are made out of wood and paper.

-It's time to get up now.

-This is Mam-gu.

-She's wearing a kimono.

-There's Mam-gu on her way to work.

-The kimonos are very pretty.

-They are colourful

-and the patterns are very pretty.

-While she's busy, Momoko, Mam

-and Michael will visit the family...

-..for a fun day out.

-I have three cousins,

-two boys and one girl.

-Mizuki, Aoi and Takery.

-Mizuki is the eldest.

-Aoi is the second eldest.

-Takery is the baby.

-He's three.

-This is Takery, my cousin.

-I'm trying to help him climb up.

-We're on the other side of the

-world. Japan is very far from Wales.

-But there's a park here too

-with cherry blossom on the tree.

-The flowers are beautiful.

-I like the trees.

-I like climbing them.

-I'm good friends with Aoi.

-She's kind, fun to be with

-and noisy like me.

-This is a Japanese phone

-but it isn't a real one.

-It's a toy.

-We're on our way to buy picnic food.

-There's a lot of bread here.

-There's pizza.

-Bread with tomato ketchup

-and sausage.

-The bread smells nice

-and makes the room smell nice.

-After buying food,

-we set off for the park...

-..to eat our picnic.

-It's tasty,

-like hot dogs but with bread!

-My cousin's eating bread with beans.

-These are sweet red beans.

-They're very tasty.

-We're lucky to be in Japan

-for our special time.

-There are many cherry trees

-in Japan.

-Everyone celebrates

-when the cherry blossom appears.

-It's holiday time in Japan.

-Everyone's dressed up.

-They come out to see the trees.

-Cherry blossom is seen everywhere,

-as are the kimonos.

-There's a special way

-to wear kimonos...

-..with a wide belt

-around the middle.

-Some girls are Geisha,

-such as these in Gion Corner.

-Geisha girls wear

-traditional Japanese costumes...

-..and learn Japanese traditions...

-..such as dancing and tea making.

-When you're a Geisha,

-you're beautiful and silent.

-Geisha girls wear kimonos.

-Sometimes,

-they paint their faces white.

-Their hair is black.

-They have a flower in their hair.

-I don't want to be a Geisha.

-It's too difficult.

-You wear a kimono like this.

-Then you wear an obi.

-An obi is a long, wide belt.

-It's tied at the back.

-I like kimonos.

-This is how they danced.

-This is a special place.

-Sumadera -

-a beautiful Buddhist temple.

-It's quiet and peaceful.

-We must wash our hands.

-People come here to pray.

-Momoko and Michael are lucky.

-The priest has paid them

-a special visit.

-He tells them a story.

-Buddhism is one

-of Japan's religions.

-People worship Buddha.

-Buddha is kind to animals...

-..people and little children.

-Buddha calls on us to be kind.

-Is he right, Michael?

-Yes.

-Konichiwa!

-Konichiwa is hello.

-I say it to everyone.

-I like playing with my cousins.

-I see them once a year...

-..when we travel to Japan

-from Cardiff on our holidays.

-There are koi fish in the pond.

-There's also a terrapin in the pond.

-It's like a tortoise

-but it's called a terrapin.

-We're on a long train journey.

-It will be worth it.

-We're going to see

-a special puppet show.

-We're going all the way to Awaji.

-I'm excited about going

-to the theatre.

-It's a very special show.

-Three people were responsible

-for operating the puppets.

-We couldn't see their faces.

-They were dressed completely in

-black with hoods over their faces...

-..but they could still see.

-Two moved the hands, one moved

-the head, one moved the left hand...

-..and one person moved the feet.

-One person in the corner sang

-and acted as the puppets' voices.

-The show wasn't long enough.

-After the show, they showed us

-how the puppets worked.

-To capture the moment,

-I took photos.

-Michael made the puppet move.

-I think the puppet is heavy.

-Michael!

-Is the puppet heavy?

-Michael says it is.

-Arigato.

-I said thank you.

-In Japanese, it's arigato.

-Back in Tarumi,

-I'm taught how to wear a kimono.

-It's not easy.

-This kimono is especially for me.

-It's a pretty colour.

-Momoko's grandmother ties the obi,

-the belt, around her midriff...

-..and ties it at the back.

-Mam-gu has taught Momoko

-how to wear a traditional kimono.

-These are the special socks.

-They're shaped perfectly

-for sandals.

-Here I am, wearing my kimono.
